Welcome to 2023!
A very warm welcome to the 2023 school year! There has been such a joyful, positive feeling here at St Peters over the past days as our students, families and staff have returned to life and learning. This year, our College’s theme is in fact: Sparking Joy! This theme will be explored in our Pastoral Care classes, Assemblies and Chapels. We have certainly started our year on the right path!
Continuing our pattern of strong growth, the College has now exceeded the 700 student milestone for Prep-Year 12 and we are overjoyed that so many new families have joined us.
NEW MIDDLE LEADERS
With the growth of our College, we have introduced a number of key Middle Leadership positions in 2023 to optimise teaching and learning and pastoral care across our great College. In the Primary Years, the Primary Years Curriculum Coordinator role has been developed to drive innovation in teaching and learning in the Primary Years, particularly inquiry based, global-minded learning. In addition, our new Years 4-6 Pastoral Care Coordinator will proactively introduce Positive Education and wellbeing practices into Upper Primary.
In the Secondary Years, four Curriculum Leader roles have been introduced for English, Humanities, Mathematics and Science to continue to produce best practice teaching and learning in these core areas. Our new Year Level Coordinators for Year 7, Years 8/9, Year 10 and Years 11/12 are working in partnership with our Counsellor to ensure the evidence-based Positive Education Enhanced Curriculum program from Geelong Grammar’s Institute of Positive Education is delivered through our nurturing Pastoral Care teachers in a new, dedicated Wellbeing lesson each week.
This year, we have also introduced a Performing Arts Coordinator position. The role encompasses the coordination of Private Tuition and will strengthen our Music, Dance and Drama co-curricular programs and activities. We congratulate Dr Bradley Voltz on his appointment to this position. Dr Voltz brings a wealth of expertise to the role, having been the Director of Music, the Director of Arts and Performance and the Director of College Improvement (Special Projects) at a number of schools. He has also been a conductor of the Third Queensland Youth Orchestra from 1998-2020.
ADVANCING TEACHING AND LEARNING
Our Year 12 2022 results highlight the dedication of our students over their St Peters journey as well as the support from our highly skilled and supportive teachers and families. Of those students who consented to sharing their ATARs with St Peters, we are pleased to share that four of our students achieved an ATAR above 99 (placing them in the top 1% of the state) and seven of our students above 90 – a wonderful result. 100% of student applicants received a Tertiary offer, with over 50% of these students receiving early offers and with approximately 75% of students receiving their first preference.
The areas of Engineering, Nursing and Health Pathways and Law and Business emerged as the strongest areas for future study, with Griffith University once again being the university
of choice for approximately 50% of the students who applied for university. Increasingly our graduates are electing to study at the University of Queensland, with 1 in 5 of the Class of 2022 having been accepted to study at UQ this year.
We hold our Old Scholars in our prayers and are looking forward to celebrating their excellent academic achievements in the upcoming Academic Honours Assembly on Thursday 9 February when we will present our Year 12 2022 Dux, Proxime Accessit and Subject Award winners.
In Primary Years, we journey into inquiry learning with even greater rigour this year under the leadership of Mrs Karen O’Neill has been appointed as the Primary Years Curriculum Coordinator. Mrs O’Neill is an experienced education and senior leader for 30+ years and has driven inquiry learning and the world-renowned International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program in schools here in Australia and overseas. Mrs O’Neill and our dedicated Primary Teaching team will focus on the development of student agency, questioning skills, curiosity, critical and creative thinking and research and high level cognitive skills to prepare our students for our ever changing world.
Literacy and Numeracy will continue to be key focuses of the Primary Years and the introduction of our Prep-Year 3 Learning Support Teacher, Mrs Samantha Jones, in addition to evidence-based programs such as MultiLit and Oxford Maths, will ensure our students can be supported and achieve at their very best in these areas.
In the Junior High, our Years 8 and 9 students have had an exciting week starting to engage in a variety of new electives developed from listening to student voice, including Cultural Studies, Drama, Dance, Entrepreneurship, Fashion and Textiles, Law and Order, Mechatronics, Media Studies and Research and Reason. We have been delighted by the professional dialogue and planning of Secondary teachers to ensure best contemporary pedagogical practices facilitate learning across these engaging subjects, and we can’t wait to see what our students learn and create.
Your support is of the utmost importance as we educate, equip and form our fine young people here at St Peters. Together we can grow your children into people who are confident in their identity and about their place in the community and who have the heart and capability to make a positive difference in our world.
As St Peters reaches its 15th year anniversary this Friday 29 January, Founders Day, we thank God for the rich blessings given to our College. May God grant us all we need as parents and staff to wisely guide, support and inspire our fine young people so that they can flourish in 2023.
