A very warm welcome to the 2024 school year. For those families new to St Peters, I hope that your child settles in well, and that they (and you) feel part of our community very quickly.
It is wonderful to have students back on campus this week. Schools are very different places when our students are present. Our students bring a life, energy and sense of hope and joy to St Peters. It has been terrific to witness the smiles on their faces and the excitement in their voices each day this week.
It is important that our students make a positive start to the year and lay strong foundations for the year ahead in order to set themselves up for success. Establishing good habits around homework and study, demonstrating a positive attitude towards classwork, being organised, managing time effectively, setting goals and challenging oneself are important elements of laying the foundations for success. Part of laying the foundations is the expectation that our students hold high expectations of themselves and pursue their personal best in all that they do. Holding high expectations of ourselves is reflected in getting the seemingly small things right– like uniform, punctuality, good manners and work ethic. I encourage all our students to get these ‘small things’ right. If they do this, it will help to set them up for success in the ‘big things’.
One of the distinguishing features of a St Peters education is the breadth of opportunities available in and out of the classroom. Over the December-January break, students had the opportunity to be part of a Band Tour to the west coast of the United States and Canada, a Strings Tour to Japan, a Year 11 Service Learning Trip to Cambodia, a student exchange to Germany, a Cricket Tour of Adelaide, take part in the National Volleyball Titles on the Gold Coast, and Robotic Championships in Sydney. St Peters really is a world of opportunities that helps to create a rich and diverse student experience. These diverse experiences enable our young people to grow, develop their character and learn more about the person they are becoming. I encourage our students to engage in what St Peters offers, and discover passions that perhaps they don’t even know they have yet.
I wish all in our community a wonderful 2024 and look forward to seeing people around campus as the year unfolds. Plus Ultra!
Tim Kotzur Head of College
Message from the Head of Springfield
A very warm welcome to the 2024!
It has been such a positive start to the year for staff, students and families and I have very much enjoyed getting to know you in my new role as Head of St Peters Springfield. I want to take this opportunity to acknowledge our outgoing Principal, Mrs Natalie Houston, and the College’s current Senior Leadership Team for their assistance in my transition into this role and ongoing support.
St Peters Springfield has shown me that it is a strong community, committed to our shared mission and a place where our College motto, “Plus Ultra” is lived out each day.
NEW STAFF
With the growth of our College, we have had the opportunity to expand our teaching staff. In particular, two new staff have joined us in key Middle Leadership positions in 2024. In the Primary Years, the Primary Years Curriculum Coordinator role was developed to drive inquiry based, global-minded learning as we transition to the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Program (PYP). Leading us this year in Primary Curriculum, is Mrs Susan Allenspach. Mrs Allenspach was previously at St Peters Indooroopilly and has extensive experience as a PYP Curriculum Leader from her time overseas.
In the Secondary Years, we have added a role as Curriculum Leader for Arts and Technologies to support teachers and continue to produce best practice teaching and learning. Leading us in this area is Mrs Renee Yates. Mrs Yates has previous experience as a Curriculum Leader in the Arts and a history of 15 years in Film, Television and New Media.
Year 12 results in 2023
Our Year 12 2023 results highlight the dedication of our students over their St Peters journey as well as the support from our highly skilled and supportive teachers and families. Of those students who consented to sharing their ATARs with us, we are pleased to share 24% achieved an ATAR above 90 – a wonderful result. 100% of student applicants received a Tertiary offer, with over 60% of these students receiving early offers. The areas of Health and Science were those that emerged as the strongest for future study for our students and the universities elected to attend were evenly split between the University of Queensland, Queensland University of Technology and Griffith University.
Through ongoing hard work and dedication, the College has continued to develop the number of students also completing Vocational Education and Training (VET) qualifications, with almost 50% of students achieving at least a Certificate III or higher. Furthermore, we have achieved our highest ever Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) results, with 98% of students achieving their QCE.
We hold our Old Scholars in our prayers and are looking forward to celebrating their excellent academic achievements in the upcoming Founders Assembly on Tuesday 30 January when we will present our Year 12 2023 Dux and Proxime Accessit.
News From around the College
The College has continued its pattern of strong growth, with almost 750 students now enrolled and it is my pleasure to welcome all the new families who have joined the St Peters Springfield community.
The Stage 3B development of the Junior High Precinct (JHP) continues to progress, albeit with the weather presenting some challenges that may affect the final date of completion.
The above, along with the tremendous growth of the College, has necessitated the installation of four modular buildings between the bus stop and JHP. Access to these extra classrooms has drastically improved the College timetable and rooming consistency for classes in the Secondary school. These buildings will continue to fulfill these needs while Stage 3B is completed and as we look toward further building works to cater to our expanding curriculum offerings and student population.
The new line-marking in the Visitor Carpark will bring a welcome reprieve to some of our traffic congestion, with the expansion to two lanes through which cars can enter. The left being a dedicated “Kiss and Go” lane for quick drop-offs and no parking, while the right entry lane is those who wish to park. We politely ask parents to follow these directions as we work together to ensure better flow and less congestion.
The collaborative courtyards behind Curnow House have taken shape with the painting of walls and installation of synthetic grass. The addition of plants and greenery are still to come, along with the much-awaited ping-pong tables. These new areas offer a multipurpose space to use for classroom breakout or learning spaces and will also add to extra areas for use during breaks.
College wide, we have now moved to five longer periods each day to create more opportunities for flow for both teachers and students and to decrease busyness across the campus. For the first time too, our Primary and Secondary years now have offset start and finish times, as well as separate break times. The initial feedback has been very positive from students and teachers.
Years 8 and 9 students, for the first time, have the opportunity to study a Game Design elective. This has been added to the already broad options available including Cultural Studies, Drama, Dance, Entrepreneurship, Fashion and Textiles, Law and Order, Mechatronics, Media Studies and Research and Reason.
This is also the very first year that St Peters Springfield is going to have two groups of Year 9 students attend Ironbark, with the first group saying fond farewells to their parents on Tuesday 16 January. All reports are that they are travelling well and I look forward to joining them and their families for their Ironbark graduation service in the near future.
Thank you to all the members of the community that have made me feel so welcome and contribute so richly to the life of the College. I encourage you to join me and our Parents and Friends committee members at our regular monthly meetings. The ongoing support of parents and families is highly valued and is so important to the ongoing development of our young people
Thank you and God’s richest blessings for the year ahead.
Craig Brown Head of St Peters Springfield

Welcome back to the new school year! Christmas may seem so long ago, but I think it’s worth trying to hold onto the Christmas feeling for a little bit longer. In this post-Christmas time I’m often drawn to the story of the wise men, that part of the Christmas story that happens a little bit later than Jesus’ actual birth.
Holidays are typically a time for travel, and many a summer holiday has been spent on the long road trip, working out where to go and how to get to the planned destination. But this year has been different for so many people, with bush fires and floods and worries around illness changing so many plans. For me, my journey to Adelaide and back was detoured by bushfire, family catch up affected by covid and the trip home saw road damaged by flooding and numerous roadworks…we had it all! But I know it wasn’t just me - the journey for so many this summer and for the past few years has been very different than what they had expected.
I think for the wise men too, their journey was very different from what they expected. They travelled so long and so far, searching for a king, only to realise that they had actually been searching for someone very different. In discovering that humble little baby, they discovered something so much more – they discovered a God who was prepared to come down to them, to be with his people, to live with and journey with all of human kind.
Even as the wise men discovered that God was closer than they thought, so we discover this same truth even as we deal with hardship and worry. We ask where God is as we travel the difficult journey that life sometimes sends us on. But even as we ask the question, we come to discover exactly what the wise men discovered – that God is here with us, helping us and supporting us. Just like the star shone light on the love of God in this world, so too do we see shining stars – helpers and workers who shine the light of God’s love into the lives of those around them.
So as your journey through this year, whatever the year may hold for you, look to those who bear the light of love in your life. And know that you too have the light of God’s love in and around you, helping you to be a shining light for those around you. And in doing so, we discover that God is indeed here with us.

Last Thursday, sixteen eager members of our St Peters Springfield Student Leadership team along with Mr Cant, Mr Langlands and Mrs Johnson ventured to the Currimundi Recreation Centre on the Sunshine Coast. The first activity allowed students and staff to try their hand at surfing; some talented students even managed to stand up. It was fantastic to see the whole group demonstrating resilience for what was for all the students their first go at surfing. After the beach, the students were joined by Mr Piacun who led discussions with the leadership team around what it means to be a leader. The next morning the group were awoken at 4.00am for a hike up Mount Coolum. Everyone managed to make it to the top just as the sun rose over the clouds. It was a great way to start the day and signal the beginning of the final year of these amazing bunch of young people’s schooling journey. Following breakfast, students conquered the Giant Swing. A few apprehensive students (and teachers) overcame their fear of heights to complete the challenge. Students also had to work together as a team to pull each other up in the harness. It’s these activities and discussions throughout the retreat around working hard together and utilising each other’s strengths that will hold the Student Leadership Team in great stead for a highly successful 2024.

Performing Arts
Welcome Back
A very warm welcome back to another year of opportunities, celebration and growth for Performing Arts. To the newest College community members Welcome and we hope that you find within Performing Arts your space and place to be creative, express emotions, develop and refine skills, make connections, develop teamwork, grit and empathy and communicate meaning through the actions of creating and performing.
The process of appointing an additional Speech and Drama teacher is progressing and parents will be notified once an appointment has been made.
At this stage we are unfortunately unable to offer Dance Troupe as a Cocurricular activity due to staffing availability.
Private Tuition Program
Tuition is available onsite in the Private Tuition Program from our experienced Instrumental Staff for Flute, Oboe, Bassoon, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, French Horn, Tuba, Percussion, Piano, Guitar, Ukulele, Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass and Speech and Drama. The cost is $41 for a weekly half hour lesson. Tuition is during school time with preference for break time or before with and after school lessons given to the older year levels. The Private Tuition Teachers invoice parents directly and this is an ongoing three-way conversation between the instrumental teacher, the parent and student in relation to goal setting, progress, examination preparation and performance opportunities. Students are to enrol for a semester before making any adjustments to lesson continuation.
NB. Continuing students from 2023 are not required to re-enrol for Private Tuition in 2024. Unless the Teacher has been notified, they will assume lessons are continuing.
The Instrumental Private Tuition Booklet is available on Firefly and includes the Enrolment form. For new students, please scan and send to sfd.performingarts@stpeters.qld.edu.au
If students are aware of an upcoming offsite activity such as an excursion, camp, medical appointment or on-site activities such as exams or incursions, the expectation is that the student or parent notifies the Private Tuition Teacher, well in advance so that alternative arrangements can be made.
Cocurricular Activities
All Performing Arts Cocurricular activities will commence rehearsals in Week 2. Please refer to the schedule below for days, times, location and the staff member who has responsibility for the activity. Commitment to these activities is for the full calendar year and includes being able to participate in rehearsals and all performances. It is an expectation that students who are involved in a music activity are undertaking private tuition either at the College or through an external provider as the ensemble rehearsal time is for developing ensemble and expressive skills, not note learning. This is to be done in the student’s own time and with their instrumental music teacher if they are having trouble with the repertoire.
As all ensembles only have one rehearsal per week, it is essential that students are making the commitment, are in the space before the allocated start time and have the correct equipment and music with them to efficiently maximise the rehearsal time. If you know in advance that your child will be absent from a rehearsal, please email the person in charge of the ensemble directly to notify of the absence, as roles will be taken each week as Cocurricular is acknowledged on the semester academic reports. If you have any further questions regarding your child’s suitability for a particular ensemble, in the first instance, please email Mrs Geraldine Campbell at g.p.campbell@stpeters.qld.edu.au and your query will be directed to the relevant ensemble director for further clarification. Please also note that the staff are not onsite on a full-time basis, so there may be a delay in responding.
The Ensemble Enrolment Handbook also available on Firefly.

Sport
Springfield Sport
Welcome to all members of the St Peters Lutheran College sports community for the 2024. I trust all families have had a relaxing break and are looking forward to what this year holds.
Last year was another great year for St Peters Sport and in the short time I have been at St Peters I have grown very proud of the way students remained committed throughout the whole year and made the most of the opportunities available. I strongly encourage all young women and men at the College to be involved in as many sports as they can this year – not just to enjoy the array of physical and social benefits, but also to be a part of the significant improvements that St Peters has displayed in both the QGSSSA and AIC Competitions and Representative Sport over the last five years.
The diverse range of sports offered to students from Prep to Year 12 aims to cater for both varied interests and varied ability levels. St Peters Sport recognises the importance of positive sporting experiences in a young person’s development, and therefore accepts that competition focussing solely on winning and losing can create undue pressure on students. To this end, in junior years there is increased emphasis placed on enjoyment, fair participation and skill development. As our sportspeople mature, the aforementioned attributes remain important while a sense of competition also shifts into focus. In Senior years, results become an increasing part of shared team goals and successes.
Parents are strongly encouraged to be involved within their child’s sporting pursuits, particularly through positive support at matches. This attendance is invaluable and creates an environment which is conducive to quality performances and a united, supportive approach. We greatly appreciate the effort and time that is required of parents and we thank you in advance for your support.

WELCOME TO ST PETERS BOYS SPORT FOR 2024!
“The pain of effort is temporary, the pain of defeat is not.”
I would like to welcome you to the St Peters community for 2024! I hope this email finds you well and filled with excitement for the upcoming sports season. As we gear up for the challenges and triumphs that lie ahead, I am thrilled to extend a warm welcome to each one of you.
My name is Mr Dan Fraser, your Boys Sport Coordinator, and I am truly honoured to join the St Peters community. With the new year comes new opportunities, and I am eager to work with you, your families and your coaches to build on the success of our sport programs and set ambitious goals for the AIC season. I have recently made the move from Adelaide, where I had the privilege of working with Adelaide United, managing high-performance football programs. Prior to that, my journey led me to Mackay, where I oversaw a sporting academy focusing on Rugby and Touch Football.
We are extremely excited and looking forward to a successful year of St Peters Boys Sport and assisting the young men of our College aspire to and reach their sporting goals in 2024 and beyond.
St Peters prides itself on its holistic approach to education of which sport and Cocurricular activity plays a significant role in developing. It is not too late to sign up for either Volleyball, Cricket, Swimming, Cross Country, Australian Rules Football and Rowing for this term. St Peters Swimming is officially underway starting with the 2024 Swim Camp held on Wednesday 17 January. St Peters Swimming continues to grow with over 140 athletes displaying great levels of energy and enthusiasm by al as we look to build momentum over the coming weeks.
The swim camp provides an opportunity for all participants, particularly our new junior members, to clock their times and showcase their skills. A dedicated team of SPW coaches and St Peters Sport staff were present to ensure the smooth coordination of the day. Year 12 students also demonstrated their leadership by taking initiative in assisting to run team building activities for our younger students.
We look forward to seeing all students for the swim meet later this week on 25 January.
St Peters Cricket Tour
On Thursday 14 December, a team of 26 St Peters Cricket students spanning Years 8-11 embarked on a six day pre-season training and Cricket tour in Adelaide, South Australia.
Based in Glenelg and accompanied by our coaches Gary Munday, Andy Richards, Sam Chew, Andrew Crothers, George Thomas and parent supporters, the boys engaged in Cricket matches at St Peters (SA), Blackfriars, and Woodcroft Colleges. Additionally, with some downtime in between matches, the team visited the iconic Adelaide Oval and Don Bradman Museum to take in some Cricket history.
Evenings were brimming with enjoyable activities in the Glenelg area, including putt-putt, beaches and pool time. The St Peters Cricket Tour has been a huge success and forged enduring bonds among the three age groups, resulting in an unforgettable experience and the creation of lasting friendships and memories.
St Peter's Open Football students recently embarked on a football training camp, immersing themselves in a weekend of skill development and camaraderie at the Sunshine Coast Sport Recreation precinct.
Under the guidance of Head Coaches Jacob Minnett and Nathan Shepherd … the boys engaged in intensive training sessions and internal matches. Beyond the pitch, the camp fostered team spirit through beach activities and team-building tasks. Thank you to Mr. Mulligan, Mr. Zafer and Mr. Lohe, whose commitment enhanced the overall experience. The camp sets the stage for a promising 2024 season, with eager anticipation for the successes that lie ahead. Training for Open Football begins Wednesday Week 1, please refer to email from Mr Mulligan for Senior students.
ST PETERS TERM 1 AIC SPORT
AIC Volleyball, Cricket, Australian Rules and Swimming are the current IN-SEASON BOYS AIC SPORTS this term and training is currently well underway. It has been a very hectic lead up to our Term 1 sports with preseason training beginning last year.
Also, this term, we will see the commencement of both St Peters Cross Country and St Peters Rowing training for our boys. St Peters Cross Country training is open to all boys from Years 7-12, whilst St Peters Rowing will cater for boys in Years 8-12. All trainings will continue over the coming weeks of this term and we encourage both students and parents to become familiar with the St Peters App when looking for information pertaining to anything dealing with St Peters Sport.
It is imperative that all boys participating in any Term 1 Sport are now attending training and are available for this weekend’s scheduled trial fixtures.
For details of times and venues for this weekend’s trial games against Iona College/St Edmunds College (Senior Boys Australian Rules) please check the information on the St Peters App.
For our St Peters sporting programs to positively develop and grow, it is paramount that our students attend training sessions for their chosen sport, so they can improve and refine sport-specific skills and build cohesion amongst their team-mates.
If students are unable to attend some training sessions, it is vital that their absence is communicated to their coaches firstly, and also the respective coordinator/s.
Should the sport specific information you are looking for cannot be found on the St Peters App, please contact the below sport specific coordinators.
