Welcome to 2020
A warm welcome to one and all to the 2020 school year. These are among the most exciting days of the year as students and families return to life and learning at St Peters. We are delighted to have exceeded the 600 student milestone from Prep to Year 12 continuing our pattern of steady growth.
Founders Day Service
On Wednesday 29 January, we held our Founders Day Service acknowledging our Founders, installing new staff and our Seniors and affirming continuing staff and giving thanks to God for His great blessing.
New staff who have joined us this year as we have grown to over 600 students Prep to Year 12 are:
Teachers: Mrs Sarah Calder, Miss Katrina Hill, Mrs Kristin Staunton and Mrs Kelly Stolz
Teacher Assistants: Mrs Kellie Parsons and Mrs Jeanette Whytcross
Corporate: Mrs Renee Michalkow
At the service, we also recognised our founding Principal, Ms Lange-Mohr, on her recent award of the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the Australia Day honours for her significant service to education. What a wonderful acknowledgment for one who has invested her life passionately serving and equipping others.
While St Peters Springfield is now in its 13th year of operation, this year we celebrate the 75th anniversary of St Peters which commenced at Indooroopilly in 1945. St Peters has played a significant role in the lives of thousands upon thousands of fine young people who today serve in a multitude of capacities across the globe.
Teaching and Learning
In Primary School this year we journey into inquiry learning to support the development of student agency, questioning and curiosity, critical and creative thinking, research and high level cognitive skills, all of which are essential in the rapidly changing world in which they are growing up. Mrs Hofstee has been appointed as Contemporary Learning Leader this year to support our team as we live out our Plus Ultra motto, always seeking to refine our practice to obtain the best outcomes for our students.
Our Year 12 students will this year be the first to graduate with an ATAR under the new QCE (Queensland Certificate of Education) which brings with it new rhythms to school life. Some of our Seniors, for example, invested time over the holidays studying, having commenced their Unit 3 work last year and being mindful of external exams in Term 4 which will cover a full twelve-months’ work.
We will see changes to Junior High teaching and learning to reflect the changes under the new QCE to ensure students are well prepared for Senior School. We will also see changes in Junior High that are supported and facilitated by the new learning environments of the Junior High Precinct.
Construction Works
The new Junior High Precinct remains on track for practical completion later this term. God willing, we will be able to commence classes in this facility at the start of Term 2. I have been delighted by the professional dialogue and planning of teachers around the pedagogical possibilities this new facility will create to support contemporary learning.
Thank you to Kindy and OSHC families, students and staff who were so gracious over the holidays as civil works were carried out in association with the Junior High Precinct. Your support and understanding is greatly appreciated.
Carpark works were slightly delayed due to recent rain but by the end of this week we should have a crossing at the eastern end of the car park. This second crossing and the additional speed bumps will enhance safety of students, families and visitors making it easier for all to ensure a crossing is used to access the central carparking area. We are planning further changes in Semester 1 to improve access. It has been good to see some families using the public car park at the adjacent sporting facilities and crossing safely at the lights.
The Review
We are currently finalising our annual school magazine, The Review. It has been our desire that the record of 2019 captured the complete learning journey and its celebrations all the way through to the end of the year. Copies of the 2019 Review will be issued later this term.
Your support is critical to the culture and flourishing of St Peters and our subsequent capacity to support you in educating, equipping and forming fine young men and women who enjoy the benefits of a St Peters education - young people who are confident in their identity and in their place in community, who have the heart and capability to make a difference in the world today and every day. May God grant us all we need as parents and staff to wisely guide, support and inspire our young people in 2020.
