Welcome to the 2022 school year! I extend a very warm welcome to all members of our community, particularly to our new families.

What a deep honour and privilege it is to return to the St Peters Lutheran College Springfield community, a special place that continues to put excellence in contemporary teaching and learning at the forefront while offering a holistic Christian education at its heart.

In 2008, our founding year for the College, I had the pleasure of teaching the very first Year 8 class, our ‘Seniors’ for 5 years! Our first graduates, who graduated 10 years ago this year, have now become data scientists, architects, journalists, film producers, teachers, IT specialists, paramedics and the list goes on. What an honour that our school could nurture these students’ God-given talents and abilities. How wonderful that they now shine a light in our world whether that be in the sciences, government, creative industries, education, technology or health care sectors, to name only some. The full impact of the high quality teaching and learning provided at St Peters Springfield is certainly visible.

The unique paths taken by these fine young men and women reaffirm the individualised approach and life-changing role our College plays in the formation of the young people entrusted to us by local families. We see the potential, talents and goals of our students and actively seek to awaken and grow our students, your children, in these areas so that they can shape and enrich our world.

It has been no different in 2021. Our newly graduated Year 12 students aspired to be the best they could be with the support and expertise of their teachers and now they are stepping forward into the post-school paths that they are passionate about. Our community couldn’t be more proud of them!

St Peters Springfield continues to grow from strength to strength, commencing this year with approximately 690 students from Prep to Year 12. While the College has certainly grown in size and number over the past decade, the sense of community and excellence remains palpable. It is heart-warming to see that there is still a number of fellow foundation staff members or staff from the ‘early years’ here at the College. Even more incredible is that we have past students working here – it has been wonderful to see their familiar smiling faces. Such things are a testament to the strong culture of empathy, trust, support and diligence that has always existed at St Peters.

The children who enter and leave this College are industrious and well-rounded young people. They are the embodiment of our College motto – Plus Ultra – Ever Higher. This week our community has celebrated yet another example of striving ever higher. Year 12 student, Mollie O’Callaghan, is congratulated by St Peters for being a recipient of the Medal of the Order of Australia during the 2022 Australia Day Honours.

Year 12 2021 Outcomes – Well done

While schools no longer have access to school-specific reports of Year 12 academic outcomes, many of our 2021 students have chosen to share their Year 12 academic results with us.  Over 66% of students in the 2021 Year 12 cohort provided access to their results.  From these, it is evident that our students are well on their way to achieving their goals.  28% of our students received a university offer for their first preference.  This is a wonderful outcome and a testament to the quality of teaching and learning that happens every day at St Peters.

We hold our newest Old Scholars in our prayers and look forward to celebrating their academic excellence at our Academic Honours Assembly later this term when we will present our Year 12 2021 Dux, Proxime Accessit and Subject Award winners.

We hope that our current Seniors will be inspired by the achievements of our 2021 Seniors.

Most Lutherans know the hymn, A Mighty Fortress is our God (words and music by Dr Martin Luther). People often refer to Luther’s hymn as 'the hymn of the Reformation', and it’s also the hymn of our school, St Peters.

But for us who are living through these COVID times nearly 500 years later, there is a profound message for us, not only in its message, but in the actual origin of Luther’s most famous hymn.

In 1527, the plague hit Luther’s hometown of Wittenberg, and people fled the city, including pastors and students at the Wittenberg University. It was during this time that Luther wrote his famous paper, Should a Christian Flee the Plague. Martin and his wife Katie also opened their home to many sick and dying people, turning it into a hospice and a refuge for those needing care. At the end of that same year, Martin and Katie were blessed with a little daughter, Elizabeth, who was very sick from birth and sadly died only months later, in May 1528. This was a time of great difficulty for Luther, and it was in this struggle that he wrote A Mighty Fortress giving it the title 'A Hymn of Comfort'.

This famous 'Hymn of the Reformation' could be referred to as a battle hymn, but not in the sense of fighting human enemies. It was a battle hymn in the sense, of the struggle we all know too well – against suffering and doubt in the midst of uncertain times – notably during a pandemic.

At the heart of Luther’s hymn is the Christ focus:

Christ Jesus, who is the 'valiant one' who fights for us.
Christ Jesus who stands with us, when we are isolated or unsure.
Christ Jesus, who holds fast to us, in his 'fortress' embrace.
Christ Jesus, who is not far but present with us.

At the start of this year as we face new uncertainties around COVID, we are given words of faith to sing from Luther’s own journey through pandemic and uncertainty – bold words of the comfort of the love of God, showered upon us in the life our Lord, Jesus Christ: “A mighty fortress is our God, A trusty shield and weapon, Our faithful helper in all need, our stay, whate’er may happen.”

The Edutest Academic Scholarship Exam takes place at the St Peters Indooroopilly campus on 19 February 2022. Applications cost $100 to register and will close on Friday 11 February, 2022.

The College is aware that there are shipment delays for several uniform items for both Shop 45 and School Locker.  If you have not received an item, please be assured that we are flexible, and that your child can wear a similar item until you receive the new item/s.  Please email your child’s PC teacher if they are not in full uniform.

Please remind your child to check lost property in Student Services regularly for all lost items.

We understand that some families who have placed an order with Sequel after December 2021 may not yet have received their orders.  Sequel are working as best they can, under the very difficult circumstances, to have your orders completed as soon as possible.

Please note that teachers will be understanding if your child does not have their resources when they return to school on Monday.  If this is the case please email your class teacher and let them know.

Hearts Café will be operating from Monday 7 February. The College is delighted to announce that Naomi Angell has commenced in the role of Café Coordinator for 2022.

Hearts Café offers a wide selection of locally sourced Australian Grown and produced food across the menu range. Naomi Angell the new Café Coordinator is passionate about food and will be providing healthy provision to support learning.  Naomi is committed to delivering fresh healthy food that will sharpen minds, energise and rejuvenate the body to support co-curriculum activities. Above all though it is Naomi’s total engagement with the students that we feel makes all the difference.

Prep-Year 3 students can place an order online. All other students can purchase from the café using their student card. Loading funds to my student’s ID cards is attached.

Prep-Year 12

Hearts Café Pre-Ordering

• The preferred method to order from the café is to pre-order online.
• To reduce the waiting time in the café line and to help with food preparation, we are asking parents/students to pre-order café food.
• Students/parents are asked to pre-order either online or via a brown paper bag system available outside Hearts Café.
• The order cut-off time is 8.00am!
• If ordering at school, please fill out a brown paper bag with the food items you would like to order, full name, student ID, PC class and whether you would like this in first break (Primary), or first and/or second break (Secondary).
• Once you have filled out your order and details on the bag, please place it in the correct basket (Prep-Year 6 or Years 7-12).
• An option is to pay by EFTPOS by knocking on the door of the Café. Our Coordinator will organise this payment. This needs to be completed by 8.00 am.
• Prep-Year 6, please pickup your orders from the boxes under the window at First Break.
• Years 7-12, please collect your orders from the boxes on the window bench at the appropriate break.

In 2008, history was made when St Peters Lutheran College established a new campus in the rapidly growing Springfield area. Pioneering and trail-blazing have historically been at the very foundations of St Peters. In the final years of World War II, German Lutherans built St Peters Indooroopilly on firm foundations – the foundation of Christ and quite literally, rock-solid foundations.

29 February, which we now refer to as Founders Day at St Peters Springfield, was the first official day of school attendance for our Founding staff and students in 2008. It is a day that we annually celebrate, reflecting in awe on how the inspiring vision of a new St Peters school was brought to life by our St Peters Lutheran College Council, chaired by Professor William (Bill) Curnow, under the leadership of our Head of College (2003-2011), Stephen Rudolph, and Founding Principal Jill Lange-Mohr OAM. It is a day on which we remember the enthusiasm and dedication of the 14 Founding staff members and the eagerness of our 121 Founding students.

This year, we celebrate 15 years of educating students here at St Peters Springfield. We thank God for His countless blessings on our College from its very first day. We will celebrate Founders Day at our upcoming Chapel services.

St Peters Springfield is extremely excited for Year 12 student, Mollie O'Callaghan, who was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the 2022 Australia Day Honours for her service to sport, having been a gold medallist at the Tokyo Olympic Games. Mollie was in fact the youngest 2022 Australia Day honours recipient.

Mollie started swimming at the age of four and only a few years later, she began to compete. Swimming at St Peters Western under the leadership of Dean Boxall, Mollie’s inspiring performances saw her become the youngest member of the Australian Olympic team for the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021. Mollie won gold in the Women’s 4 x 100m Freestyle Relay (heat swimmer), gold in the Women’s 4x100 Medley Relay (heat swimmer) and bronze in the Women’s 4x200m Freestyle Relay (heat swimmer).  Mollie also broke the World Junior 200m Freestyle Record at the Tokyo games.

Mollie has worked so hard to get to this point and the College congratulates her on her goal-setting, perseverance and fine sporting spirit. We can’t wait to celebrate with Mollie once we are all back at school!

Mollie, you are an inspiration to all members of our community and truly embody our motto: Plus Ultra – Ever Higher!

According to the educational blog, The Edvocate, the benefits of debating include; improved critical thinking skills, improved articulation, improved research skills, quick-thinking, greater empathy, greater emotional control and finding meaning in complex situations.

At St Peters Springfield, we participate in both the Queensland Debating Union (QDU) competition and an online competition later in the year.

The QDU debating season begins very soon for Years 8, 10, 11 and 12 (our Year 7 and Year 9 students will have debating opportunities later in the year).

Debating meetings happen once a week during lunch time, though there are more as we approach the day of the debate.

There are four debates in the first round for each year level. All debates happen in the evenings. Topics, times and venues are yet to be determined.

Events will be held in a COVID-safe way, guided by current Qld Health Advice.  While we are hoping to stage live events, digital presentations will be utilised if required.

The school operates a number of ensembles, allowing our vocalists and instrumentalists the opportunity to experience and further their ensemble skills. Last year certainly had its challenges but were proud of the way students remained committed throughout the year and made the most of the opportunities available. I strongly encourage all young women and men at the College to be involved in as many sports as they can this year – not just to enjoy the array of physical and social benefits, but also to be a part of the significant improvements that St Peters has displayed in both the QGSSSA and AIC Competitions and Representative Sport over the last five years.

The diverse range of sports offered to students from Prep to Year 12 aims to cater for both varied interests and varied ability levels. St Peters Sport recognises the importance of positive sporting experiences in a young person’s development, and therefore accepts that competition focussing solely on winning and losing can create undue pressure on students. To this end, in junior years there is increased emphasis placed on enjoyment, fair participation and skill development. As our sportspeople mature, the aforementioned attributes remain important while a sense of competition also shifts into focus. In senior years, results become an increasing part of shared team goals and successes.

Parents are strongly encouraged to be involved within their child’s sporting pursuits, particularly through positive support at matches. This attendance is invaluable and creates an environment which is conducive to quality performances and a united, supportive approach. We greatly appreciate the effort and time that is required of parents and we thank you in advance for your support.

Girls Sport Coordinator – Anne-Marie Champion

Welcome back to the 2022 school year and for our new families, welcome to the St Peters Community.

Sport is an important facet of life at the College, and we hope all our girls find a way to be involved as a competitor or supporter throughout the 2022 year. As 2022 unfolds, in what has been a challenging start for all, we look forward to another amazing year of Girls Sport. I hope the perseverance and resilience we all demonstrated over the last two years will continue to give us the strength and courage throughout this year.

We are blessed at St Peters to be able to offer the girls a wide range of sporting opportunities. We encourage all girls to find a Sport/s this year and to actively participate to the best of their ability. The cocurricular life of the College is a wonderful way to help develop balanced all-rounded young women and build the habits of lifelong regular physical activity.

Over the holidays, we had many of our swimmers do amazingly well as members of the St Peters Western Team who were once again crowned number one in Queensland at the State Championships. Many of our girls enjoyed an outstanding meet with many PB’s achieved – amazing results, well done to all our girls and coaches!

Another amazing performance was by our Year 11 student, Alexis B, who won a silver medal at the Open Water National Championships in Adelaide last weekend. What an outstanding achievement by Lexi - her hard work is certainly paying off!

At St Peters, we pride ourselves on many things but when it comes to Sport, we particularly value commitment and communication. Commitment to a team is something we emphasise in Girls Sport, and parents we would appreciate your support in reiterating the importance of honouring a commitment. When girls sign on for a Sport it is important, they consider whether they can uphold this commitment for the season. Each Sport will have two training sessions and a game/meet each week in season and it is vital that girls do their best to attend these sessions. If they are unable to attend a session, we ask the girls to please communicate this with their Coach and the Coordinator of the Sport.

This week we have had Senior Softball, Senior Australian Rules and BWPI Water Polo training commencing with INTERIM Training schedules along with the 2022 Swim Season launch this Friday afternoon. Next week, Basketball, Football, Touch & Cross-Country pre-seasons commence. Sign-ons for all these sports have been emailed to girls this week.

Please Note, students can only sign on for ONE of the Autumn Fixture sports but they can do both Cross Country & Swimming, along with one Autumn Fixture Sport.

Welcome to St Peters Boys Sport for 2022!

We hope that you all had a wonderful break over the Christmas and New Year period and keen to get involved in St Peters Sport in 2022. To all the new students and families joining the St Peters sporting community – welcome! We are extremely excited and looking forward to a successful year of St Peters Boys Sport and assisting the young men of our College aspire to and reach their sporting goals in 2022 and beyond. 

A major focus of our AIC sporting program in Term 1 of 2022 will be to further nurture and encourage positive engagement of both students and coaches alike, whilst maintaining a high standard of commitment, skill development and enjoyment at both training and game days. 

St Peters prides itself on its holistic approach to education of which sport and cocurricular activity plays a significant role in developing. It is not too late to sign up for either Volleyball, Cricket, Swimming, Cross Country, and Australian Rules for this term. We encourage all students who have not signed up for a Term 1 sport to contact the sporting coordinators listed below and they will be happy to assist you with respect to trials, trainings and games. Please also note that AIC Round 1 for Open Australian Rules, First VI Volleyball and First XI Cricket commences this weekend (Friday 4 & Saturday 5 February).  All other age groups will play trial games this weekend verse Padua College. Please refer to the St Peters App for details of times and venues for games this coming Friday and Saturday.

St Peters Western Number One Club in 2021

Congratulations to the St Peters Western Swimming Club for taking once again gaining the title of Champion Club in Queensland following their sensational performances at the 2021 Queensland Swimming Championships in December 2021. Well done to all involved. Another fantastic year of swimming for SPW club.

Swimmers Excel at Australian Open Water Championships

Congratulations to Robbie T (Year 12) who in the 10km race won his age group and placed fourth overall in the Open Men’s division. Robbie backed up to also claim victory in the 5km race in the 18/19 Years division whilst also placing fourth overall in the Open 5km division. These performances have cemented Robbie in the Australian team. Younger brother Sam T (Year 11) also excelled winning the both the 16 Years 7.5km race and the 5km race to claim the title of Australian Champion for both distances. A great effort also by Callum B (Year 11) who place 11th overall in the 17 Years 7.5km race and 17th in the 5km race.

National Volleyball Schools Cup Success

Congratulations to our St Peters Year 10A and Year 11A Volleyball teams who were both victorious and winning Gold within their respective divisions at the Australian Volleyball Schools Cup on the Gold Coast early in December 2021.

St Peters Term 1 AIC Sport

AIC Volleyball, Cricket, Australian Rules and Swimming are the current IN-SEASON BOYS AIC SPORTS this term and training is currently well underway. It has been a very hectic lead up to our Term 1 Sports with preseason training beginning last year.  

Also, this term, we will see the commencement of both Cross Country and Rowing training for our boys. Cross Country training is open to all boys from Years 7 to 12 whilst Rowing will cater for boys in Years 8 to 12.

Volleyball, Cricket, Australian Rules, Swimming and Cross Country trainings will continue over the coming weeks of this term and we encourage both students and parents to become familiar with the St Peters App when looking for information pertaining to anything dealing with St Peters Sport.   

It is imperative that all boys participating in any Term 1 Sport are now attending training and are available for this weekend’s scheduled fixtures.

For our St Peters sporting programs to positively develop and grow, it is paramount that our students attend training sessions for their chosen sport, so they can improve and refine sport-specific skills and build cohesion amongst their teammates. If students are unable to attend some training sessions, it is vital that their absence is communicated to their coaches firstly, and also the respective coordinator/s.   

St Peters Boys Sport Dress Standards

With the commencement of a new sporting year, we would like to highlight once again that all boys participating for St Peters in sport are to be fully dressed in the correct St Peters training and/or game apparel.

St Peters Training

• St Peters sports polo shirt (or St Peters specific sport program shirt)
• St Peters sports shorts
• White St Peters socks or plain white socks (no other coloured socks to be worn)

St Peters Game Day

• St Peters playing jersey / singlet / shirt
• St Peters sports shorts or specific shorts / trousers 
• White St Peters socks / plain white socks / St Peters sport specific socks (eg. football / rugby)

Spectating at St Peters AIC Fixture Games

Any St Peters student who arrives at AIC sporting fixtures (either home or away) are expected to be dressed in St Peters formal uniform or St Peters Sports uniform if spectating. No St Peters student is to attend an AIC sporting venue if they are not dressed appropriately and will be asked to leave the venue.

Boys Rowing Sign Up

The St Peters Boys Rowing program completes in the South East Queensland Rowing Conference during Term 2. The boys also complete a preseason training schedule during term 1 each year. 

All boys that are wishing to row are requested to complete the following ‘sign up’ google form.

Sign up is required to be completed by no later than Friday afternoon 4 February. 

The College is involved in two prestigious sporting associations, Queensland Girls’ Secondary Schools Sports Association (QGSSSA) and Brisbane School Girls’ Rowing Association (BSRA). There are ten schools in the formal QGSSSA competition and fixtures are played on a rotational basis whereby all schools compete against each other. Girls also have the opportunity to participate in the Queensland Interschool Equestrian Association (QISEA) and Brisbane Water Polo Inc (BWPI).

St Peters is a member of the formal inter-school sporting competition known as Associated Independent Colleges (AIC). There are eight schools in this formal competition and matches are played on a rotational basis whereby all schools compete against each other throughout the year.

We are aiming again to have St Peters teams entered into the Western Districts Netball Association competition made entirely of girls from St Peters Springfield. Girls will play in teams based of their date of birth. Girls from Years 3 – Year 6 in 2019 will be eligible to play in this competition. We are very much looking to build on the last few years with the formation of a Year 4/5/6 Cricket teams made up of Springfield boys who would train on St Peters Springfield and then play games against other schools within the AIC competition. Our Lower Primary students are catered for through paid after school programs run throughout the year. Information regarding these programs will be communicate throughout the year and run by various providers and include:

Prep to Year 2 Netball Program – Term 1

As we aim to offer more opportunities for Lower Primary students, we are asking for expressions of interest for Prep to Year 2 Netball program. This program will be run on a Monday afternoon from 2.30 pm to 3.30 pm and be run by Mrs Marty Stolberg. Cost of the program will be $100 for 6 sessions. Dates of the program are as follows:

Baseline Tennis – Term 1 

Baseline Tennis run programs for our Lower Primary students on the courts at the Springfield Central Central Sports Complex. Enrolment in Baseline Tennis is done directly with Baseline Tennis will continue on a Tuesday afternoon for our students. Qualified coaches will collect students take them across to their lessons and if necessary return students of OSHC if required at the end of the lesson.

Representative Sport is an important pathway to enabling our students to achieve individual success and to further their sporting development. Girls and boys aged 10 - 19 years (born 2012 to 2003) are entitled to attend the Metropolitan West Sports selection trials which includes a district trial with Central Comets in the sports they currently play at St Peters. Exceptions to this would include sports that are not offered to students within the St Peters Co-curricular Sport program such as orienteering, baseball, etc. In 2022, student nominations will be approved by the Head of Sport, Mr Jeremy Lohe and submitted through to the appropriate convenor.

The Central District Swimming Carnival has been CANCELLED for 2022. However, swimmers who wish to pursue the Representative pathway for Swimming (10 to 19 Years) will be able to nominate to attend the Met West Swimming trials to be held on Wednesday 23rd February. Only students who meet the Met West Qualifying Standards will be considered for selection (found below). Students wishing to nominate will need to complete the following documents in order to nominate for the Met West Swimming Trials and return completed via email to Mr Jeremy Lohe by Friday 4th February:

As in 2021, the College aims to further increase participation in Co-curricular Sport in 2022 by supporting the movement of students between St Peters Springfield and St Peters Indooroopilly. This will be achieved by a dedicated St Peters Sport Bus and will operate at the following times:

Morning (AM) – St Peters Indooroopilly to St Peters Springfield
Depart promptly at 7.45 am from the St Peters Indooroopilly Internal Bus Stop

Afternoon (PM) - St Peters Springfield to St Peters Indooroopilly
Depart promptly at 2.35 pm from the St Peters Springfield Bus Stop

Students must register for the Sport Bus through the ST PETERS SFD Sport Bus Manifest. This sheet will be shared directly to students Google Drive Accounts with students needing to add their name whenever they require a seat on the bus for training at Indooroopilly. Parents MUST need to fill in the ST PETERS Sport Bus Consent Form before their child uses this service.
