This year at St Peters Lutheran College Springfield, we are committed to intentionally fostering an environment of belonging. In this environment, students develop strong relationships, agency, and purpose. It is a place where each learner is seen and valued for their unique gifts and talents. And it is a place where every child learns, every day.
To this end, one of our 2023 secondary teaching and learning priorities is the development of a high expectation learning culture. Our school motto ‘Plus Ultra’ is an apt encapsulation of this priority: we aspire for students to achieve their personal potential by aiming ever higher.
A high expectation learning culture is one in which students are encouraged to aim high and work hard to achieve their goals. Teachers set high standards for their students, and students are expected to put in the effort to meet those standards. This culture emphasises the importance of energy, resilience, and perseverance.
Research has shown that a high expectation culture improves academic and wellbeing outcomes for students. When students are encouraged to aim high and work hard, they are more likely to achieve their goals. They develop a growth mindset, which allows them to see challenges as opportunities for growth and learning. They become more resilient, able to bounce back from setbacks and keep pushing forward. They also develop a sense of self-efficacy, the belief that they can accomplish difficult tasks and overcome obstacles.
To meet high expectations, students need to develop certain habits and dispositions. By being willing to take risks, they will try new things and learn from their mistakes. Learners need to be persistent, to keep working even when things get tough. They need to be organised, to manage their time effectively and stay on top of their work. They also need to be self-motivated, to take responsibility for their own learning and set goals for themselves.
I am thrilled to share two key initiatives we are introducing in the secondary school to grow our high expectation learning culture:
1. Teacher professional learning. Over the course of the year, we will engage in mini action-research cycles by selecting and implementing evidence-based pedagogical strategies that foster a culture of high expectation. We will measure and share our impact on student engagement and learning.
2. Academic coaching. This week, Year 12 students will commence the 2023 academic coaching cycle. Meeting once per term over the course of the year, academic coaches will support students in analysing ATAR indications, setting SMART goals, and evaluating their learning dispositions and habits.
As parents, I encourage you to become curious about those dispositions that enable students to thrive in a high expectation learning culture. Better yet, you can nudge your child to engage in reflection by asking some deceptively simple questions:
Today, what was easy and what was difficult? Why?
What progress have you made, and what needs work next?
How do you plan to approach this task? What’s worked well in the past?
Rita Pierson once said, “every child deserves a champion, an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection, and insists that they become the best they possibly can be.” How powerful it is for us to partner as champions for the young people at St Peters Lutheran College Springfield.

Led by the Spirit
Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness for forty days, being tempted by the devil. Luke 4:1
This single verse tells us much about the season of Lent and Lenten practices. One thing it tells us is that Jesus was in the wilderness for forty days. The number 40 comes up several times in stories in the Old Testament, and now here in Luke’s gospel, Jesus is tempted by the devil in the desert for 40 days. For Christians today, Lent is the period of 40 days before Easter Day. This year it begins next week on February 22nd. It can be seen as a “wilderness” time where fasting is undertaken, and the subsequent temptations are faced as we are tested from what is given up.
The second thing this verse tells us is that while Jesus was tested in the desert, he was led by the Spirit and full of the Holy Spirit. Even though Jesus was tempted and tested while he fasted in the desert, he was at the same time led by the Spirit. In the following verses in this story from Luke, we read that with each specific temptation, Jesus experienced the Holy Spirit, who each time took him into God’s word. This was how Jesus passed through this testing—going back to the word of God and the promises of God.
The third thing we learn is that God’s word can be our strength and protection too. Especially during the times of testing, we experience in our lives. God promises his people that he will never leave us or forsake us. In this Lenten story, Jesus has survived and overcome temptation and testing. On Easter Day, Jesus conquered death and the grave. After this, the Holy Spirit was given to the disciples, the church and all of God’s people throughout the world to renew, refresh and revive troubled hearts and minds. This is the same Holy Spirit given to us through God’s word when we are tested in our times of trouble and turmoil. The Holy Spirit also gives us hope. Hope that with the presence of God and his word, we have the strength to go through the challenges of life.
May God’s Spirit fill you with hope and strength in your “wilderness” times.

Wellbeing on Wellness Way
The Happiness Trap
As a school counsellor I am constantly told by parents that they just ‘want their children to be happy’. As a Mum myself, I get it. I often find myself wanting the same.
But what is happy? What does it look like? Does it happen when we get A’s in every subject? Or when we get our first car? Or when we graduate? Or when we get a 99.8 ATAR? Or when we get a job?
It can happen during all of those moments – but it can happen FAR more frequently than that.
Over the last few decades, our meaning and pursuit of happiness has been unhelpful, and at times, destructive. The lengths that people go to – to be happy – come at the cost of so much, so often, that it can cause extreme mental health struggle, burn out and relationship break downs.
Helen Street – an expert on resilience and contextual wellbeing – states that “rather than wanting our kids to be happy, we’d rather build their capacity to be well, take risks and manage their goals while maintaining deep connections, this is how they become resilient.”
For it is in others where we experience happiness and contentment. Happiness is a trap, happiness is not a destination – it’s a daily choice. Having hope and feeling happy means believing in our capacity to survive and thrive in a world where everything always changes.
So next time someone asks what you want for your child, change the answer… what if instead you want your child to feel meaning, like they contribute to our planet, or maybe you want your child to love themselves, and accept who they are… let’s reframe our lens on happiness and be happy in the moment – but not chase it as an end goal.

Teams Learning Experience in Year 6
This week, the Year 6 class participated in a Teams learning experience with Mr David Peterson, a Haematology Scientist from Adelaide. He also happens to be Ms Peterson’s brother. In Science we are learning about chemical reactions, including the body. The inquiry focus was:
Different substances found in blood
Ways scientists separate blood
Ways blood donation can help people
Interesting and new facts
The Strategic Learning Pillars at St Peters encourages us to be learners who access pivotal and diverse learning processes to harness and enhance student experiences, including connecting to experts in their fields through digital platforms.
Students not only got to learn from an expert, but they were able to ask questions to build their understanding of the concepts and topics covered in Science. You never know, we may have a new generation of Haematology Scientists coming from this learning experience.

Elevate Education
In 2023, we continue our partnership with Elevate Education to support our senior learners in developing impactful learner dispositions and habits. This term, our Year 11 and Year 12 cohorts will engage in a Study Sensei workshop on Thursday 23rd of February.
To complement the work they do in school, Elevate Education are running a free webinar series for parents. By tuning in, you will learn how you can help better support your children at home by reinforcing the skills they learn at school.
The first webinar—How to Help Get (& Keep!) Your Child Motivated—will be held on Wednesday 15th of February. You can register HERE.

NAPLAN Coordinated Practice Test
On Tuesday 21st February during Lessons 2 and 3, all Years 3, 5 and 7 students will complete a NAPLAN Coordinated Practice Test (CPT) in classrooms, facilitated by their PC teacher.
On this day, students must ensure they have the following materials: wired earphones, a charged device, and their pencil case.
Practice testing is an opportunity for:
students to familiarise themselves with the types of questions in NAPLAN, and the online test design
staff to familiarise themselves with the online platform and logistics involved in managing online assessment
schools to verify that their technical infrastructure (devices, bandwidth, local networks) can support online testing and to assess the effectiveness of their preparation ahead of the NAPLAN test window.
Practice tests are not marked and therefore results are not available.
NAPLAN questions are directly linked to the Australian Curriculum: English and Mathematics. As such, the best preparation students can do for NAPLAN is to learn what they do in the classroom every day. On its own, NAPLAN is not a test that can be studied for, and students are not expected to do so.
NAPLAN is just one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process – it does not replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance; however, students and parents may use individual results to discuss progress with teachers.
Our new art club, Canvas, will officially start next Wednesday 22nd February from 2:50 pm - 4:00 pm in CH.05 for budding artists in Years 7-12.
The main purpose of Canvas will be to develop practicing artists for exhibitions and competitions. Students do not need to be enrolled in curriculum classes but should have a current Visual Arts practice away from school or a passion for developing their practice in Visual Art. Some materials will be provided to students during afternoon sessions however students are encouraged to bring their own sketchbooks or preferred materials for working.
Later in the year, we will have exclusive opportunities for members of Canvas to attend artist workshops, excursions, and gallery visits as well as invitations to exhibit at school events.
Our French program across the school has successfully taken off for 2023, across the school all students have been invited to participate in Manie Musicale where 16 francophone artists from around the world have had a current song chosen which students also from around the world vote on to declare the winner each year. All students have access to the playlist and have already started participating in voting, singing along to the lyrics in French and have honestly been a lot of fun!
Year 6 have delved into music vocabulary, genres and writing sentences according to musical preferences.
Year 7 have participated in a form of speed greetings to get to know each other and to prepare for upcoming assessments.
Year 8 have had fun participating in a French version of Cluedo as well as working on their upcoming assessment which includes a digital component of creating their ideal home and writing a descriptions of it in French.
We are looking forward to lots more fun activities being incorporated into our French program as well as the upcoming tours of francophone countries – please look out for the upcoming information night. French club on Mondays have also become more and more successful and everyone is most welcome to join in, whether it is for one session for a bit of extra help, or ongoing to extend your French too, it’s a club for students to enjoy and take ownership of too.
Feel free to join us on Mondays 2:45-3:45pm in CH06.
And, a very big thank you to all students who have been getting involved and making each and every French lesson a fun place to be!

The Arts
Term 1 | Week 4
Over the remainder of the term, I will share sections of an article titled “5 Habits for Effective Practice”. Although the article concerns music practice, the habits apply to many activities that involve skill development.
HABIT 1 – GET ALL THE NOTES RIGHT ALL THE TIME!
Our brains learn patterns. When we learn to play a piece of music our brains are actually learning the patterns within them. Each time we play any section with 100% correct notes, the pattern is reinforced. Each time any notes are wrong, it isn’t. In fact, the more times we play something incorrectly, the more our brain learns the wrong pattern. Better not to play at all than to play incorrectly - at least that way you aren’t reinforcing the wrong notes.
Educational psychologists currently believe that a pattern is learned after it has been repeated 7 times correctly. If a pattern is learned incorrectly first it takes an average of 35 repetitions to unlearn and learn the correct way! So, if you want to make faster progress let this be your encouragement for getting it right first time, and every time.
How to get it right every time
It is very simple to play 100% correctly every time. Here is the secret - play slowly and stop if there is something of which you aren’t sure. That’s it. Play slowly. It is always so tempting to play through a new section a couple of times then immediately try to speed up. 90% of the time you make mistakes because you are going too quickly too early. Take your time.
Stop if you find there is something you can’t play
Work it out - don’t guess.
If you make sure you have 100% correct notes all the time you will begin making faster progress almost overnight.

Springfield Cricket
Congratulations to Anuk K (Year 7) for scoring St Peters Springfield’s first-ever century in AIC Cricket. On Saturday, the 7A team defeated St Laurence’s College by 30 runs. St Peters scored 1/270 off 30 overs courtesy of a blistering 102 not out off 88 balls, which included 16 fours and 4 sixes. He formed a formidable partnership with Tom L from St Peters Indooroopilly who also scored 102 not out in their innings.
Anuk has been playing Cricket for St Peters since Year 4 when he played in the Year 5 team. He has also represented the school in District Cricket against students two years older than him. Anuk has made the first round of the District Cricket Team again this year. We look forward to watching Anuk’s progress and many achievements in the years to come.
