We have begun sharing our strategic focus for this school year with our students that: every child learns every day. This means that we are committed to creating an environment in which every student has the opportunity to learn and grow each and every day. We believe that every child has the potential to achieve great things, and our focus this year will be on helping them recognise growth and how to set goals to further their growth.
To achieve this goal, we will be focusing on student growth in the many areas. During assembly times we have mentioned areas such as knowledge, social skills, research skills, metacognitive skills, and listening skills. We believe that these areas are essential for the success of our students both in school and in life. It is important for us to share with our students that learning and growing in content is not the only area we can grow in. We can measure growth in many different ways in many different skills!
Our aim is to teach students to notice their own growth, create their own goals to work towards, and be aware of who they are as learners. By doing this, we hope to instil a love of learning that will stay with our students throughout their lives.
In terms of knowledge, we will be working to provide our students with a rich and varied curriculum that challenges them and helps them develop a deep understanding of concepts that run through multiple subjects. We will be encouraging our students to ask questions, think critically, and explore their own interests. We encourage you to ask questions of your children as well such as but not limited to:
- What do you notice about how ___ works?
- What is the role of __ in __?
- How do __ and __ work together?
- What would happen if ____?
- How is ___ related to ___?
- Why is _____ like it is?
- What can you say about how ____ is changing?
- What is our responsibility?
- How would you describe ____?
Metacognitive skills, or the ability to reflect on one's own learning, are also a key area of focus for us. By developing these skills, our students will be able to set goals for themselves, monitor their progress, and adjust their strategies as needed both academically and emotionally. They will be more aware of their own strengths and areas for growth as learners and will be able to take ownership of their own learning. After speaking briefly about this during an Upper Primary assembly in Week 4, some Grade 5 and 6 students approached me on playground really interested to learn more about it which was fantastic! So in Week 6 that is exactly what we did so I would welcome you to speak to your child about metacognition.
Finally, listening skills are essential for effective communication. We will continue teaching our students how to listen actively and attentively, which will help them learn more effectively and build stronger relationships with their peers and teachers. The Year 3 students made meaningful connections between classroom expectations after listening to us speak about listening skills during an Early Years assembly.
We are excited to embark on this journey of growth with our students and our school community. We believe that every child has the potential to achieve great things, and we are committed to helping them realise that potential. We look forward to working with you and your children in partnership throughout the year.

Arise Lutheran Community Church
Arise is a Lutheran community that meets at St Peters, Springfield. It’s a place where you can come to know God’s love through Jesus, and find light and hope for your life, and connect with other families from St Peters and the wider community.
In our service you will hear God’s word, sing, pray and share in Holy Communion if you want to. There’s a message for the kids too.
Two special visitors came to Primary Chapels last week. One came in a car, the other in a suitcase! Dan Warlow and his puppet friend, Jed, came to share God’s word in music and dance, story and song, and a very, very cool science demonstration. No doubt parents of Primary students have heard all about it – it was a fabulous morning and a highlight for our year.
Dan writes all his own music, plays guitar, and sings along to his video tracks. All of this helps him tell the message of Jesus’ great love for us.
If you want to get a sense of Dan’s work, please watch the video “That’s How We Know God Loves Us” featuring the Watoto Children’s Choir, available at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HNLe37lpGw0
If you haven’t heard already, make sure you ask your child about the water experiment. It blew their minds! It was such a clear demonstration of the difference Jesus makes to our lives.
We hope to invite Dan back for another visit soon. Stay tuned!

This Saturday the 25th of February, we are hosting our Annual Pink Stumps Day to raise money to supply nurses for the McGrath Foundation through donations on the bar code.
This will be the 3rd year St Peters Lutheran College has been involved in Pink Stumps Day which is greatly appreciated by Glenn and the Foundation.
The day has only got bigger at St Peters and this year we please ask for EVERYONE to please be involved, even if it is a small donation, or just by wearing pink to bring awareness of this terrible disease that affects so many families. Marist College is fully supportive of the day with their parents as well and this greatly contributed to the day being a huge success.
The P & F building will open and an invitation to everyone at both Colleges in all sports, for free Tea and Coffee and snacks, and an opportunity to support our day so please call in and say hello.
Saturday will see all our Cricket teams Years 4 to 12 play their games v Marist Ashgrove with Pink Stumps at all games with pink caps. All parents and supporters wear Pink on the day to bring awareness.
About the McGrath Foundation
The McGrath Foundation raises much need funds to fund McGrath Breast Care Nurses in communities right across Australia. From the time of diagnosis and throughout treatment, their highly-qualified nurses are there to help. While over 118,000 families have been supported since 2005, more nurses are needed to meet the growing rate of breast cancer diagnosis in Australia. We are proud to have nurses right across Australia including many regional and rural centres, where breast cancer treatment and support may be harder to reach. The McGrath Foundation currently have 193 McGrath Breast Care Nurses, who help individuals and their families experiencing breast cancer by providing physical, psychological, and emotional support, for free.

Football Parent Support Group Meeting - 6 March
The Football Parent Support Group (PSG) would like to welcome all new and returning Football Parents to our next school meeting on:
Monday 6 March at 6pm in the Schneider Building (Science Block) - Indooroopilly College.
The Football PSG is a wonderful way to meet other parents and get involved in the Football community.
We look forward to seeing you there and sharing information about our upcoming social events.
The 2022 Grants Program has provided two shipping containers for storage of players cricket bags during the week.
In the past our Cricket players have had to leave their Cricket bags around the school and often in the open or take them home after each training day. The two shipping containers will provide enough space for 196 cricket bags and allow boys to leave their Crickets bags at school in safe and secure storage throughout the week. I know the staff at St Peters will welcome this initiative.
Thank you to the P&F Community Grants for being the catalyst for great projects undertaken by the PSGs.

Wellbeing on Wellness Way
Be. HERE.
This year we are focusing on embracing joy – and we are continuing to invest in programs and skill building with our staff and students so that we can help everyone feel their best, be their best and create a dynamic community of belonging.
As Brene Brown states, Belonging is “the feeling you are seen, heard, and valued, for who you really are.”
Schools are foundational to nurturing a sense of belonging. It is essential to the development of our young people that they want to come to school because they know they matter.
Belonging also means being able to show up as who we are, and help each other be our best. Seeing each other for what we are starts the very nature of belonging.
It’s incredibly powerful to watch belonging flourish – this week I noticed a group of girls from different year levels all coming to sit together, that is the kind of school we want to be in. A culture of kindness and inclusivity, where we notice people that may be alone and offer them our company, it’s an amazing job to be in when you watch the kindness of young people.
With love and joy for an amazing week,
Sarah Johnson Guidance Counsellor

Information Evening for Parents and Students Studying French in 2024
Noumea French Study Tour
If your child will be studying French in 2024 and they are in Years 8 – 12 in 2024, there is the opportunity to participate in a French Study Tour in Noumea, New Caledonia during the Easter holidays (though not over the Easter weekend).
Noumea is located 1,470 km north-east of Brisbane. New Caledonia is the closest French speaking country to us and only a 2-hour 10 minute flight away (so, closer than Melbourne). This makes it the ideal location for a weeklong trip to be immersed in the French language and culture!
Students who participate will be staying with host families in twin-share rooms. Mornings entail age-level appropriate French language lessons at CREIPAC and afternoons will be spent visiting local attractions. Currently we are planning for two teachers to accompany a maximum number of 20 students.
We will be working with Global Student Tours, who have been organising trips of this kind for a very long time and we have used them in the past. The photos are from our 2017 trip.
The itinerary, costs and other information will be made available at the information session on Monday, March 27. The meeting will be held in the Junior High Foyer and will start at 5 pm. The meeting is for parents and interested students. The presentation will last no longer than 30 minutes, but I would anticipate that there will be many questions. I would be grateful if you would please email me if this is of interest to you and your child (please provide your child’s name in the email and their class) and let me know if you can attend.
The year 12 students had a fun but exhausting three days on K’Gari (Fraser) Island gathering data for their Biology and Geography IA2 assessment tasks.
Every student fully embraced the opportunities available to them. They were able to see many different ecosystems and the damage that wildfires cause to such habitats. They had opportunities to visit a World Heritage site, swim in pristine lakes and creeks, and see wildlife in their natural habitat. Most importantly, they observed first-hand the impact that we as humans have on our environment. It was all topped off by an unforgettable sunrise. Whilst the collection of data was the primary focus for this camp, the memories they have made will last a lifetime.
As teachers we valued our students’ willingness to step up and help, their openness to new experiences, and their ability to find joy in everyday moments. They certainly represented the College well, demonstrating patience, resilience and teamwork. They also discovered that you don’t get anywhere quickly when you’re on island time!

Term 1 | Week 5
Rehearsal Changes
Effective Week 6, the following secondary ensembles will have extended rehearsal times for the remainder of the year:
Con Brio – Mondays 7.00am – 8.00am
Platinum Band – Thursdays 3.00pm – 4.00pm
May I please remind students to be at rehearsal in time to start at the scheduled time.
HABIT 2 – SLOW PRACTICE
Slow practice is something most people do when learning a new piece or scale. As soon as they think they’ve learnt it, they start playing faster. This is often where mistakes creep in and are practiced, and once a mistake is practiced into a piece it is very hard to unlearn. Slow (correct) practice is always effective practice. It gives you time to think about what you are doing, to play with the correct technique, and to focus on playing with 100% accuracy.
It is often a good idea to use a metronome when practicing slowly to make sure you are not speeding up when playing. If you don’t have a metronome, there are many free apps available for download for your phone or laptop.

Girls in Sport Health Information Evening
Many months of planning came together last night for the Girls in Sport Health Information Evening, from the initial feedback we have received, the event was a huge success.
This Netball Parent Support Group sponsored event, with special mention to past Presidents, Rachel Thomas & Kerrie Moyes, 2023 Presidents Andrea & Richard Jolly, Treasurer Andi Yeo, Secretary Anna Staples along with support from many Committee members worked with me to put together an amazing panel of speakers.
Each speaker brought with them a wealth of knowledge and the presentations were both engaging and informative.
To our Master of Ceremonies, Rebecca Sparrow, Old Scholar and St Peters parent, what a fantastic job she did keeping proceeding flowing throughout the evening.
We would not have been able to put together such an amazing panel of speakers without the support of the Netball Parent Support Group sponsors.

Sporting Behaviour
As we enter a busy time in Girls Sport at St Peters with the QGSSSA Swimming Championships and the start of the Autumn fixtures just around the corner, it is a timely reminder to reflect as a community on our conduct.
Sporting behaviour is the term used to reflect sportsmanship, as it pertains to ethical behaviour, fair play, and respect for the sport, the participants, and the spectators. As participants, we need to appreciate the good sportsmanship and skills of opponents, always display good temper and grace, and give congratulations, thanks and support as appropriate. As Parents and Spectators, we are reminded that children learn best by example. Never use profane language or harass coaches or officials and teach your children that honest effort is as important as victory.
Please recognise the value and importance of coordinators and coaches and support their decisions.
REMINDER

2023 AIC Cross Country & Runners Club
I would also like to highlight this week the importance of the St Peters Cross Country program. Not only are we wanting boys to compete competitively for St Peters in Cross Country but we are wanting all Years 7 to 12 boys who will be playing in Term 2 Sports (Rugby & Football) to strongly consider attending at least one (1) Cross Country session or Runners Club so to enhance their overall fitness level as they start to prepare for Term 2 Sports.
Cross Country at St Peters has traditionally been well received and very competitive at both AIC and QGSSSA. Let’s work hard in 2023 to maintain this high standard and consolidate on past years participation and performances. Training times for Cross Country can be found on the St Peters App.
