Without a doubt, the connectivity provided by technology has eased the challenges thrown at us by a pandemic where words and phrases such as ‘lockdown’, ‘isolation’ and ‘working from home’ have entered the everyday language of us all. This has been particularly so in schools where meaningful and authentic teaching and learning has continued to occur. It has been a powerful tool, allowing students struggling with a homework problem to access instant help from classmates and has provided channels for our young people to make contact with friends having a tough time.
However, this universal acceptance of technology as an integral part of our daily lives must be tempered with caution where our young people are concerned. The proliferation of social media platforms makes it difficult for students to find the time to be alone, to escape the constant interaction with classmates. Online friendship groups frequently expect all members of the group to stay connected to one another twenty-four hours a day.
This constant connection allows playground arguments to simmer as slights and grievances are carried from the classroom to the bedroom. Disagreements between two classmates can move from the private to the public arena when bystanders choose to become involved. No wonder that, sometimes, we nostalgically look back to a time when a child’s technological communication was confined to the family phone positioned in the living area of the house.
However, social media is here to stay and the challenge is to guide our children to use technology wisely and safely. At St Peters, students are given regular reminders in their Pastoral Care classes and at Assembly about staying safe online. Junior High technology classes reinforce the need for caution when communicating online.
The following advice from the Australian Government Office of the E-Safety Commissioner provides an excellent foundation for online safety:
Limit your friend list — don't 'friend' random people or allow people you don’t know to ‘follow’ your social media accounts.
Adjust your privacy settings — make sure your accounts are private so that only friends you know face-to-face can see what you post.
Your personal information is valuable — don't share it.
Protect your digital reputation — think before you share something and ask yourself, would you want anyone to see this in five years’ time?
Once you share something you lose control of it — remember that once a message, photo or video has been shared online, you may not be able to control where it goes or how long it stays online.
Be careful who you trust — not everyone online is who they say they are.
Look out for things that don’t add up — such as another user whose online profile is not consistent with what you see and hear when you talk or chat with them.
To support parents, The Office of the eSafety Commissioner also has a section for parents which can be accessed at: https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents
At St Peters, we endeavour to ensure that students understand the expectations of responsible digital citizenship founded on a Christian perspective and framed by College policy (found in Firefly) and the law.
Any time, students have concerns about social media issues, they are encouraged to talk to their Pastoral Care Teacher, Mrs West-McInnes (Primary), or Mrs Grotherr (Secondary).

Dusting off Jesus
It has been such a crazy and, also strange, start to the year; When I pulled out the cross last week for the first time this year, to be the centre point of the stage for worship, the lights revealed a thick layer of dust. Of course, it wouldn’t look good on the screen and perhaps point to a questionable message of our college, so I had to dust it off before we went ‘live’- and the thought hit me: 'dusting off Jesus' was a great image for the situation we have found ourselves to be in; as confusing and different the start of the year has been, we now have to take the dust off to refocus again and rediscover, what it was we were dreaming of last year and hoping to achieve this year: every one of us in our individual lives on our personal journeys or here at St Peters. What did you wish to gain or to achieve, which areas did you want to allow yourself to be challenged and grow in during this year?
Our School Leaders of 2022 will have to dust off the list of ideas they put together last year and revisit, yes, re–acquaint themselves with what may seem a lifetime ago: with what they actually wanted to pursue this year to initiate change, to mark a difference, to leave a legacy as cohort 2022. As College community, in our different roles it is time to reset. And 'dusting off Jesus' is actually a great start to the process as it is joyfully acclaimed in the words of Psalm 100:
On your feet now—applaud God! Bring a gift of laughter, sing yourselves into his presence.
Like a song where every single member of our College is the one note, that together makes the song be heard and enjoyed by all who join and sing along!
Know that the Lord is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.
Taking the ‘dust off Jesus’ is something you are encouraged to do in your personal lives, actually allowed to rediscover God's promise to you every single day that God will be with you every step of your life, be at your side, holding on to you, enabling you to stand tall and be confident in yourself; reminding you that you are deeply loved! And calling you to share this joyful message by sharing God's love and song with those you meet during your day!
For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.
Like God being faithful – you are invited to embody that message in a way that others get it, what we are on about: sharing life, sharing the joy, celebrate and also being there with and for one another in challenging times.
Go out, joyfully, sing yourselves into God's presence, so that you together become that song that gives thanks to the one who grants it all!

Clean Up Australia Day
As you know Clean Up Australia Day is on again. The school’s Annual Clean-up Day is held on Thursday 3 of March. The community Clean-up event is held Sunday 6 March with the meeting point in Discovery Parkland at 7.30 am. The local Landcare group – Springfield Lakes Nature Care Inc. will hold a special event for families who want to work together to keep our community litter free. We are particularly inviting families who own a canoe, kayak, or paddleboard to paddle for plastic to help remove the plastic litter that washes down our drains & enters the lakes & large sediment ponds around our community.
Thank you for your assistance.
Kind Regards, President
In Year 4 the students focus on sustainability and how to care for the environment and our dependence on a healthy natural environment. The students learn about the responsibility humans have to care for the environment at a local, national and global level. The students inquire about the diversity of natural environments and the ways that humans use and interact with them. Clean Up Australia Day is another way the students from St Peters can be involved in helping to care for their local environment.
