Aim high. Embrace challenges. Stretch yourself to your limits. Celebrate your accomplishments. We encourage our students to constantly seek new adventures, to set new goals and then work hard to achieve success.
This week we saw our Year 9 students start out on a new adventure while at the other end of the spectrum we were able to celebrate the accomplishment of students who had achieved their academic goals.
On Tuesday, we farewelled our Year 9 students as they boarded the bus for Ironbark. Excitement and anticipation rippled through the assembled students as bags were stowed and names checked off. We know that the students will face challenges while at Ironbark—physical, social and emotional—but that they will return richer for the experience. Knowing they confronted and conquered doubts, apprehension and the occasional fear will give them confidence and strength only found when we have achieved more than we believed ourselves capable of.
Then later in the morning at the Secondary assembly, we were able to celebrate the academic endeavours of students. Students who received their Personal Best GPA in Semester 2, 2020 or who improved their GPA by 0.5 or greater compared to their Semester 1 results were acknowledged with certificates recording this achievement.
These awards can be achieved by all students because they are not influenced by the results of others. They are informed only by the personal effort of the individual student. Therefore, it was wonderful to see over sixty students presented with certificates confirming their commitment to and perseverance with their studies.
SET representatives
Also acknowledged on Tuesday’s assembly were the 2021 Student Executive Team representatives. Each Pastoral Care class elects a representative who attends SET meetings. This team is the student voice of the school and is run by the College Captains and Vice-captains. The team brings suggestions and recommendations from the student body to the teaching leadership team. The SET representatives are also responsible for organising a class fundraising event to raise money to support our Compassion child, Alfred, and our Australian Lutheran World Service Village Partnership project.
Congratulations to the 2021 representatives and I look forward to hearing their ideas for the enhancement of student life at St Peters.

Lent
Wednesday 17 February was the first day of the church season of Lent. The season runs for forty days (Sundays are not counted) and concludes on Holy Saturday. The purpose of the season is for Christians to prepare their hearts and minds for the remembrance of Jesus’ death and resurrection over the Easter weekend. Traditionally, this has involved personal reflection on one’s own sin, the realities of earthly mortality, and on the undeserved gift of eternal salvation received through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Many Christians have also adopted the practice of 'giving up' something for Lent, in honour of Jesus’ 'giving up' his life for our sake on the cross. While we each can give up habits and material things for the season of Lent, it is even better to focus on transformation of character. Take some time to look through the list below. What do you need to 'give up' and 'take up' to more fully live and act in the way of Jesus?
Give up complaining. . . . . . focus on gratitude. Give up pessimism. . . . . . . become an optimist. Give up harsh judgments. . . . think kindly thoughts. Give up worry. . . . . . . . . trust divine providence. Give up discouragement . . . . be full of hope. Give up bitterness . . . . . . turn to forgiveness. Give up hatred . . . . . . . . return good for evil. Give up negativism . . . . . . be positive. Give up anger. . . . . . . . . be more patient. Give up pettiness. . . . . . . become mature. Give up gloom. . . . . . . . . enjoy the beauty that is all around you. Give up jealousy . . . . . . . pray for trust. Give up gossiping. . . . . . . control your tongue. Give up sin. . . . . . . . . . turn to virtue. Give up giving up. . . . . . . hang in there!
A Personal Lenten Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank you for journeying towards the cross for my sake. Shape me during this season of Lent so that I may better reflect your loving, serving heart in my thoughts, words and actions. Amen.
Blessings, Pastor Greg St Peter's Lutheran Church, Indooroopilly

As the school year ramps up and the reality and pressure of everyday life hits us, it might help to Lighten the Load by remembering that:
There’s always too much to do. And that’s not a bad thing.
Feeling swamped, overscheduled, and incapable of doing it all is part of the human condition (or it is for many of us). But when we make peace with this reality, it can actually be empowering. Why?
It means that we are forced to choose, so we must choose wisely.
If you have 20 things to do today but only have time for 10, choose the 10 that matter most. It’s true that sometimes things will feel a little unbalanced, and we’ll have to let important things slide. But that’s not going to happen all the time.
The brilliant Stephen R. Covey taught that "things that matter most must never be at the mercy of things that matter least."
This week, be intentional about what you can accomplish in a day. Set your focus and priorities. And make sure the things that matter most (the children! Just in case you were unsure) aren’t at the mercy of things that matter least.
This term, the RACQ’s Streets Ahead road safety program is being delivered to our Prep to Year 6 students focussing on pedestrian, passenger and riding safety. Resource Packs with age-appropriate activities and videos demonstrating strategies are available here: www.racq.com.au/streetsaheadresources
These will assist you to continue to teach road safety, implement the strategies your children have learnt and apply them to your everyday lives.
Year 1 Hand Sanitiser donation
Thank you to the P&F Committee for the kind donation of an individual hand sanitiser to each student. The students were delighted to receive this gift which also helps keep us safe in these times.

Music News, Term 1 Week 5
Seize the Advantage
Don’t ever stop that Music!
This article is a compilation of research by Dr Anita Collins, drawing on the latest international neurological research to reveal the extraordinary and surprising benefits to children of learning music.
The music advantage, it seems, kicks in right from the time we are born. Current research indicates that babies actually begin decoding language via the same neurological processes they use for music. Where once it was presumed that musical ability had a strong connection with mathematical proficiency, it now appears that music activity is more closely related to, and may in fact assist in, the acquisition of language.
Intuitively this makes sense. A baby is clearly unable to discern what a word actually means, but they can understand meaning through the musical elements of rhythm, pitch, contour, and timbre of the way in which that word is spoken to them.
“They use sound to identify the important things, lie who are their primary carers, who is part of their family or tribe”, says Collins. “One of the most effective mechanisms humans have to convey that information is through song”.
Research is also highlighting how a child’s capacity to maintain a consistent beat is a strong indicator as to their readiness to learn how to read.
“Music and reading are actually complementary and overlapping processes inside a child’s brain”, says Collins. “Enhancing musical development benefits reading development”.
Structured and sequential music learning activities also provide the foundation for the important school ready skill of paying attention and memorising information.
According to Collins, the research shows that, across schools, “participating in school music, especially instrumental music, was related to higher exam scores…. Highly engaged instrumental music students were, on average, academically one year ahead of their peers”.
The field of neuro-music research is in its relative infancy, so the body of evidence supporting the beneficial impact of music education will continue to grow.

WEEKEND WRAP
Last Friday night, 95 of our amazing swimmers attended the Swim Meet hosted by St Margaret’s/Clayfield College at the Valley Pool. On Saturday our Senior Softball girls ventured to Downey Park for Week 3 of games. The girls played hard, competing with such enthusiasm and spirit, it was a pleasure to watch them put their improved Softball skills to work and see them playing the game they enjoy.
As our Water Polo girls head into the back end of their season with three rounds to go, our U12B team is fighting hard to have the opportunity to play in the finals. Last Saturday saw our Open team come out winners in a hard-fought game against BGGS. Well done girls!

AIC Boys Sport
Luke Donatini Boys Sport Coordinator 3377 6234 l.donatini@stpeters.qld.edu.au
What a fantastic and successful day of St Peters Boys Sport we just experienced. It was wonderful to get out and about last Friday and Saturday to spectate and encourage our students whilst representing St Peters at various AIC sports. It’s always great to witness the positive energy, enthusiasm and effort exhibited by our boys when representing their College. What was also noticeable was the following traits which were ever present both on and off the playing field - Respect, Resilience, Tenacity, Passionate and being Humble.
For me, these elements I find important in all our students both on and off the sporting field. As mentioned on previous occasions, the concept of ‘Our Crest, Our College’ is paramount in the building of our St Peters sporting culture and spirit. Engraining an attitude of pride, confidence and commitment to what the St Peters Crest represents, so we are all striving for ‘Plus Ultra’.
Last Saturday was made even more special with the hosting of ‘St Peters Pink Stumps Day’ in support of the McGrath Foundation. It was brilliant to witness our College community come together to embrace and overwhelmingly support this worthy cause. I would like to thank Mr Gary Munday (St Peters Cricket Coordinator) for initiating our inaugural ‘St Peters Pink Stumps Day’ and putting it all together in his first four weeks in the role of St Peters Cricket Coordinator. It is definitely something we will be looking forward to hosting for many years to follow. Should you wish to support this great cause and make a donation, please click on the below link: https://www.pinkstumpsday.com.au/fundraisers/stpeterslutherancollege/
This Week in Sport
With regards to our AIC ‘in term’ sports, we now move towards Round 5 this weekend. St Peters will compete against St Patrick’s College in Opens AFL (Friday afternoon), and then in Cricket and Volleyball on Saturday. Our senior teams, Year 7 to 9, will be competing home at St Peters and our senior teams, Year 10 to 12, away at St Patrick’s College venues.
Please ensure you check the St Peters App. for both venue details and time of games.
AIC Swimming Championships – Friday 26 February
This Friday our St Peters Swimmers will line up to defend their AIC Agregate Winners title in the pool at the State Aquatic Centre, Chandler. For the past four years our boys have won this prestigious event and in 2021 they are even more keen and up for the challenge as they strive for five consecutive wins. We are extremely proud of how hard our swimmers have worked, and we are now looking forward to watching them compete on Friday.
The AIC Swimming Championships will be Live Streamed on Friday from 8.30am to approximately 1.00pm. Please see below for the Live Stream Link: AIC Swimming Championships 2021
2021 AIC Swimming Championships – No Student Spectators
The AIC Management Committee released a statement surrounding spectators at the up and coming AIC Championships on Friday 26 February. Parents and Caregivers are welcome to apply and attend as spectators; however, it will be a ticketed event and only entry given to those who have applied for a ticket (allocated seating). There will no student spectators at this year’s AIC Swimming Championships. For further information on how to apply for spectator tickets, please check the St Peters App where you can also read the full AIC Statement regarding this event.
2020 AIC Cross Country & Runners Club
I would also like to highlight this week the importance of the St Peters Cross Country program. Not only are we wanting boys to compete competitively for St Peters in Cross Country but we are wanting all Years 7 to 12 boys who will be playing in Term 2 Sports (Rugby & Football) to strongly consider attending at least one (1) Cross Country session or Runners Club so to enhance their overall fitness level as they start to prepare for Term 2 Sports.
Cross Country at St Peters has traditionally been well received and very competitive at both AIC and QGSSSA. Let’s work hard in 2021 to maintain this high standard and consolidate on past years participation and performances. Training times for Cross Country can be found on the St Peters App. Boys can also find more details about Cross Country from the weekly sport email sent to them.
Wet Weather and Cancellations
With regards to wet weather and any unforeseen or potential cancellations of AIC sports, please ensure that you keep an eye out for notifications and alerts via the St Peters App. We will endeavour to keep everyone updated on both training cancellations and game day changes as the week progresses.
