Plus Ultra. More beyond. Our students are encouraged to reach for the stars, to aspire to heights that they’re not quite sure they will reach and then stretch themselves to reach their goals. Sometimes the effort seems daunting and giving up looks like an attractive option. Sometimes self-doubt creeps in and an ‘I’m not that good anyway’ mindset takes root. This is where teachers and parents can step in and encourage and advise. We can walk alongside our young people helping them dissemble those big, glorious visions into attainable dreams that become the milestones of the journey.

At St Peters, one of the ways we celebrate the achievement of those milestones is through acknowledging improvements in students’ academic Grade Point Average. Students who received their Personal Best GPA in Semester 2, 2019 or who improved their GPA by 0.5 or greater compared to their Semester 1 results were acknowledged at last week’s assembly.

These awards can be achieved by all students because they are not influenced by the results of others. They are informed only by the personal effort of the individual student. Therefore, it was wonderful to see over forty students presented with certificates confirming their commitment to and perseverance with their studies. 

SET representatives

Also acknowledged on recent assemblies were the 2020 Student Executive Team representatives. Each Pastoral Care class elects a representative who attends SET meetings. This team is the student voice of the school and is run by the College Captains and Vice-captains. The team brings suggestions and recommendations from the student body to the teaching leadership team. Because of SET suggestions, students now have access to a photocopier in the library, extra seating around the grounds and a growing collection of inspiring biographies and autobiographies, housed in the library which they may borrow. Congratulations to the 2020 representatives and I look forward to hearing their ideas for enhancement of student life at St Peters.

‘Remember, you are dust, and to dust you will return.’ It’s only when we are ready to die, that we can happily live life to the full!

If we can cope with the idea of our own death in a healthy way, then we are actually free to live each day well, because we are not putting all our energy into denying and running away. If we constantly avoid any thought of dying or ageing, then our whole life becomes a miserable husk, no matter how smart it looks on the outside.

Lent is the 40 day season in the Christian year leading up to Good Friday and Easter, when we remember that Jesus quite carefully chose to go to Jerusalem, the centre of opposition to him, even though he knew it would end in his death. It was his path of love, walking towards giving up his life, so that all may have life. He trusted that his Heavenly Father would catch him, even in death, and he did. Easter means resurrection. The Christian pattern is from tomb to womb.  Death leads to new life, and our dead ends or failures are never the final word. With Easter new life and forgiveness opens up in expected or underserved ways, and we are given the Holy Spirit, so that we can live the ordinary in a new way. That is pure grace.

In Ash Wednesday services people are invited to come forth and have a little ash cross marked on forehead or wrist as a reminder that we are all going to die, but that the God of life, life in all its fulness, has us. God is always there to catch us as we jump. There is always unexpected Easter life.

Your life is a daily gift. Trust that, and enjoy it. Be a blessing to others.

Hear from former Queensland Police Detective and member of Taskforce Argos (Queensland’s Child Abuse and Sexual Crime Group), Mr Brett Lee, and learn a range of simple strategies to prevent online risks in your home. 

Cost of admission is $5.00 with all proceeds from this Symposium to be donated to 2TMAB (To the Moon and Back)—an initiative established by 2019 Old Scholar, Ella Hussey-Simmonite, to raise awareness about online child sexual exploitation and improve the Child Protection System Technology run by the Child Rescue Coalition.

“Cleanliness is next to Godliness”

My nanna used to say “Cleanliness is next to Godliness, soap and water is divine”… they were the lyrics of a song from the good ol’ days. However, germs are everywhere in schools. We collect them, inhale them and share them, all day and every day.  The flu, E. coli, measles and numerous debilitating diseases spread quickly through contact with surfaces and people - and it’s our hands that are doing the dirty work.

Our Prep and Primary years have been spending time focussing on the importance and practicing the 20 second hand washing routine suggested by Queensland Health. This simple routine task could help make us all healthier. 

Posters are in all bathrooms and primary classrooms to help remind students of the importance of washing their hands especially before eating and after using the bathroom.

Please encourage your children to do the same at home. This simple procedure should benefit our whole school community.

There is always a sense of community when our Primary school classes meet together for Assembly in the even weeks of school. As students receive their Principal Awards for showing the school values, proud family members watch on. This week students were given information about auditions for our drama/arts extravaganza in August, how to recycle containers and our Year 12 leaders explained the addition of their clubs for Primary students (sports and reading). Afterwards family members enjoyed a cuppa outside out tuckshop. Our next full Primary Assembly is on the 4th March and families are most welcome to pop into the tuckshop for a coffee or tea before and after our whole Primary Assembly in the even weeks of term.

Have fun and run!

Year 3–6 students come along to the oval from 3:00pm to 4:00pm every Thursday for our fabulous and free running club. Fully supervised by Mr Brayne, the running club is a great way to build fitness and also have fun with friends. Please email Mr Brayne first to let him know you want to run. 

Over the weekend, some high school students from our Springfield Instrumental program joined the St Peters Lutheran College Indooroopilly Music Camp. Our 9 Springfield representatives joined with Indooroopilly students to form a Wind Ensemble, comprising of 65 students.

With 21 hours of rehearsals in 3 days, Springfield students learnt to sight read music, and further developed skills and technique on their instrument, while increasing their ensemble skills and learning to work with multiple new conductors. This opportunity is great for the training of musicians and pushes students outside their comfort zone while challenging their skills.

All students had a wonderful time building new friendships and relationships, whilst making music with their new instrumental section. Well done to all students involved who took on this intense weekend with a smile and a positive attitude. Congratulations and thanks to Ms Krist-elle Hill, who also gave up her weekend to participate in the Band Camp and provide this valuable opportunity for students.

Weekend Wrap-up

Friday afternoon our swimmers enjoyed a brief Time Trial before the AIC Meet commenced. We look forward to seeing all girls this Friday afternoon/night for our St Peters Invitational Meet at the 50m pool – further details are on the St Peters App.

On Saturday our Open & Senior Softball girls ventured out to Downey Park for the first round of games for the season. Out of the seven games played St Peters had three wins. The girls play with such enthusiasm and spirit, it is a pleasure to watch them develop & grow their Softball skills.

As our Water Polo girls head into the back end of their season, there are three more rounds before finals commence. All teams played well on Saturday and the Open team continued their good form on their way to the finals.

2020 QGSSSA Swimming Championships

We are commencing the last week of preparations for our QGSSSA swimmers before they compete at the annual QGSSSA Swimming Championships next Wednesday 4 March at the Chandler Aquatic Centre. The girls have trained hard for this event and we are all getting excited!

The twilight championship carnival commences at 3.30pm and finishes at 8.15pm. We look forward to seeing many students and parents support our QGSSSA swimmers and we wish them every success.

Queensland School State Triathlon Championships

Congratulations to Brianna F on her first place at these championships last weekend. Brianna has now been selected for the Queensland School Triathlon team. Well done and we wish you every success at the next level of competition.

This week I had the privilege of addressing our St Peters Springfield students both on assembly and then afterwards with a selection of boys. We discussed the importance of key elements such as Respect, Resilience, Tenacity, Passionate (in all that you do), and being Humble.

These are all valuable elements that I find important in all our students both on and off the sporting field. As mentioned on previous occasions, the concept of ‘Our Crest, Our College’ is paramount in the building of our St Peters sporting culture and spirit. Engraining an attitude of pride, confidence and commitment to what the St Peters Crest represents, so we are all striving for ‘Plus Ultra’.

It was wonderful to get out and about last Friday and Saturday to spectate and encourage our students whilst representing St Peters at various AIC sports. It’s always great to witness the positive energy, enthusiasm and effort exhibited by our boys when representing their College.

This Week in Sport

With regards to our AIC in-term sports, we now move towards Round 4 this weekend. St Peters will compete against Villanova College in Years 8/9 AFL (Friday afternoon), and then in Cricket and Volleyball on Saturday. Our Senior teams, Years 10 to 12, will be competing at home at St Peters and our Junior teams, Years 7 to 9, away at Villanova College venues.

St Peters Student Spectators on Gamedays

Should your son wish to attend any St Peters sporting event/game outside of normal College hours, it is expected that he is dressed in St Peters apparel whilst attending these events.

2020 AIC Swimming Championships

This week brings together the last of the preparations made for our AIC swimmers before they compete at the annual AIC Swimming Championships on Monday 2 March at the Chandler Aquatic Centre. They have trained hard for this event and no doubt are excited to get into the pool this coming Monday to represent St Peters Lutheran College.

This year for the first time, we will witness this event as a twilight championship carnival with the first event starting at 1.30pm and approximate finish of 6.30pm. We strongly encourage both students and parents alike to support our AIC swimmers and we wish them every success.

2020 AIC Cross Country and Runners Club

I would also like to highlight this week the importance of the St Peters Cross Country program. Not only are we wanting boys to compete competitively for St Peters in Cross Country but we are wanting all Years 7 to 12 boys who will be playing in Term 2 sports (Rugby & Football) to strongly consider attending at least one Cross Country session or Runners Club so to enhance their overall fitness level as they start to prepare for Term 2 sports.

Cross Country at St Peters has traditionally been well received and very competitive at both AIC and QGSSA. Let’s work hard in 2020 to maintain this high standard and consolidate on past years participation and performances.

AIC Sports Report of the Week

On Saturday, the St Peters 8A Cricket team 7/124 defeated Padua 10/90. Jack and Jamie started cautiously against some accurate early bowling from Padua seeing off the opening bowlers at 0/17 after the first 7 overs. The two openers continued accumulating the runs putting on an impressive opening stand of 85 with Jack scoring 19 and Jamie scoring 52. With the team 1/86 after 20 overs a big score looked on the cards but some accurate bowling from Padua together with some poor shot selection saw the home side lose 6/40 in the last 10 overs to close the St Peters innings at 7/124. 

A great opening bowling partnership by Ashish (1/14) and Jacob (2/21) had the visiting team on the back foot early breaking through the Padua top order and having the visitors 3/24 after 8 overs. Tom (1/9), Noah (1/18) and Harry (1/10) chipped in with wickets and kept things tight sending the visitors to drinks at 5/45. After drinks Fletcher (1/5) and Jack (2/11) along with a terrific run out by Liam and an equally impressive stumping by Kristian had the visitors on their knees at 9/75 after 25. A stubborn last wicket stand took the visitors to 90 before Tom bowled the 10th Padua batsman completing a good win for the boys to start their AIC season.

AIC Volleyball

Correct Training and Playing Uniform Requirements –

At Training – All St Peters AIC Volleyballers are to be where their St Peters Sports Uniform to Volleyball training.

At Games – All St Peters AIC Volleyballers must be wearing either the old style numbered volleyball shirt or the ‘new’ style numbered volleyball shirt. NO sports/PE shirts are to be worn at AIC games. WHITE SOCKS ONLY are to be worn at AIC Volleyball Games.

AIC Cricket

Correct Training and Playing Uniform Requirements –

At Training – all AIC cricketers must wear their ‘Program Shirt’ to their first training session of the week. The second training session you are to where your ‘Sports Uniform’.

At Games – All St Peters Cricketers are to arrive to their game wearing their ‘Program Shirt’ and then get changed into your playing whites just before the start of play.
