Learning Second Language
Learning is a treasure that will follow its owner everywhere.
‒Chinese Proverb
Recently, I was delighted to receive photos from Monsieur Stott of our Year 1 students reading their first book in French as well as interactions in vocabulary development. Our Year 1 students, were given small books to read aloud to each other in pairs. They were quite excited to be able to read a book from cover to cover - entirely in French! The book – “Petit et Grand” - tells the story of a small cat, its owner and their various interests and hobbies!
Monsieur Stott uses creative ideas in all his Primary French classes to engage our students in learning a second language. Another example of this is in our Upper Primary lesson. Students start each class with a routine called “Prof du Jour”. In this activity, one student comes up to the front of the classroom and acts as the “teacher of the day” – taking the roll, asking routine questions and monitoring student involvement in French! Then, the students enjoy an activity where they manipulated word cards to create French sentences in the correct order.
French lessons provide students with the skills to speak, write and read a foreign language with insights into the culture as well as history. It is an important way to broaden children’s view of the world and open their eyes to cultures and societies outside Australia.
Studies have also shown that learning a new language has the benefits of
- Boosting children’s cognitive development
- Stimulating curiosity
- Making students more receptive to learning in other areas
- Displaying empathy towards others
- Presenting a challenge
Throughout the year we will continue to showcase our French studies which is an important part of our school life here at St Peters.
