School often seems to be one of the enduring monoliths that anchor our society. Like churches, the buildings, solid and well-built, remain unchanged apart from the occasional repaint and spruce-up. But it is not just the physical aspects—the buildings, the ovals, the playgrounds—that make school a cornerstone of our society. School is a shared experience. We have all been to school, sat in classrooms, learnt to read, to multiply, to divide. We have all negotiated the politics of the playground and encountered teachers that we remember long after we have left school.
When our children start school, we ‘know’ what is in store for them. We picture them re-living our own school days—perhaps with some cosmetic changes and slightly increased use of technology—but, essentially, we believe that their school years will pretty much echo our own.
However, this is not the case. The buildings might be familiar, the school hours might be the same but what happens in those buildings during those hours has changed radically. These changes have been prompted by many factors—the encroachment of technology, research into effective pedagogy and the increasing complexity and uncertainty of our world.
The result of these changes is often confusion for parents who, when they realise that their preconceptions of what their child would meet at school and the reality are vastly different, reflect wistfully ‘that it wasn’t like this when I went to school.’ Yet, despite encountering this unfamiliar territory, parents want to be actively engaged in their children’s education (and we certainly want and welcome parental involvement.)
The respected academic and educator, John Hattie, has found that parent involvement in their children’s education has a significant, positive impact on academic outcomes. Therefore, to provide the best possible learning environment for our young people, parents and schools need to nurture strong and respectful partnerships.
To strengthen these partnerships, this year, in conjunction with our P & F, we will hold a number of Partnering with Parents events. These events will provide opportunities for parents to learn more about what is happening in school and why.
The first of these events will be held on Friday 19 March and will be led by our counsellor, Mrs Sarah Johnson. Sarah will explain PERMA, the wellbeing framework we use to support positive mental health among our students.
At St Peters, we are blessed with a community that works together (evidenced by the P & F’s unhesitating willingness to support this new initiative) and our hope is that through these events, the partnership between parents and school will continue to flourish as together we support our young people.

On Tuesday 11 May, students will complete the Language Conventions Test and the Writing Test. Reading skills will be tested on Wednesday 12 May with Numeracy skills being tested on Thursday 13 May. The timetable for NAPLAN is below.

Years 3 and 5 students are not permitted to use a calculator for the Numeracy test, however Years 7 and 9 students will complete both calculator and non-calculator elements.
NAPLAN is aligned to the Australian Curriculum: English and the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics. Questions are multiple choice or require a short written response. This year, the Writing task will require students to write either a narrative or a persuasive text. This will be evident from the stimulus they are given and we will not know what it is until the day of the Writing test. There will be one Writing prompt for students in Years 3 and 5, and a second, different prompt for students in Years 7 and 9.
National Testing provides information on how students are developing in the specified areas in relation to national benchmarks. The tests also useful provide useful information which assists in improving teaching and learning.
Teachers will expose students to similar test formats and question types through an integrated approach in the lead-up to national testing. NAPLAN tests are one aspect of the school’s assessment and reporting process, and do not replace the extensive, school-based assessments of student performance.
Parents, guardians and caregivers can support their children by making them feel comfortable about the purpose and nature of the tests and encouraging them to do their best. They can also assure students that the tests will give them an opportunity to show the knowledge and skills learned in class.
All students are encouraged to participate in NAPLAN tests. Students with a disability may qualify for adjustments that reflect the support normally provided in the classroom. Mrs Stephanie Wise, the Exceptional Learners teacher, will contact you if your child is eligible for special provisions for the tests.
A formal exemption may be granted for a student with significant intellectual disability and/or significant coexisting conditions, or for a student who has recently arrived in Australia and has a non-English speaking background. Parents or carers may withdraw their child from the tests to address issues such as religious beliefs and philosophical objections to testing.
For further information regarding NAPLAN or the processes for adjustments, exemption and withdrawal, please contact Susan Levitt (Prep – Year 6 Curriculum Leader).

Laetare!! Rejoice!! (Isaiah 66:10)
Have you ever wondered how someone can be joyful in times when life gets rough? This week we are halfway through Lent. We celebrate, what we call the 'little Easter', the light that shines into the darkness, the hope that allows us to prevail; the hope of new life that will only come to fruition at the dawn of Easter.
In the gospel of John (12:24) Jesus uses a metaphor to describe and interpret what is going to happen to him - in response to the request, “We want to see Jesus”!
Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.
Only when the tiny grain of wheat is buried and dies, it will bear fruit for many to be nourished; it is like bread – that only when eaten will sustain the body. It points us to the transformation that God brings about, often in times when we think we have reached the end – but then are granted new beginnings, often pointed in a direction we didn’t consider or dream of.
It often happens at times we don’t know where to turn or which decision to take, when we wait for a door to open or for an ‘inspiration’ to make us see, that something shifts; from being ‘in control’ to acceptance, from the pretence of ‘knowing it all’ to listening, from focusing on ourselves to the awareness of others and our surroundings, from being caught in a cul-de-sac to a change of perception and direction. The times when we have to let go of what has been, of much-loved perceptions or convictions, of what we wanted to do or achieve, those are the moments when the 'Grain of wheat dies', so that something new can sprout.
Overcoming those tough places and challenging times often teach us the important lesson of how to trust the next time around, teach us that hope of new dawn kindles the flame even in times of deepest darkness. It is those times when we need to hear the story of the resurrection, of the one, who witnessed to God’s presence and future when everyone else thought his story and life had come to an end.
May you be granted comfort and hope in challenging times, a light in dark places and the assurance of God’s presence, showing you a new way and granting new beginnings!
Laetare! Rejoice! Because the midst of night is the halfway mark to a new dawn breaking and new life promised!

Year 7 Drama students have been exploring the Elements of Drama this term. Recently they were learning how to use the element of Time and Place to create dramatic meaning. In groups they were to use drama blocks, chairs, screens and other objects in the classroom to create a Pirate Ship to perform a short Drama scene. The students were very creative with their use of objects to establish Time and Place and thoroughly enjoyed trying out their Pirate accents “Arrrrr!”

Year 3 Parklands Excursion
On Friday 12 March Year 3 students participated in an excursion to the Robelle Domain Parklands. The field trip provided the students with an opportunity to explore the features of the park and engage in the Science and Geography aspects of their Term One Unit of Inquiry, 'What is our responsibility in caring for environments?'
The students acted as scientists as they explored the natural surroundings and used criteria to identify and categorise living and non-living things in the parklands. Some of the specimens the children located included cockatoos, lorikeets, frogs, butterflies, spiders, dragonflies, many small insects and a wide range of plants. The trip inspired the students to inquire deeply into the significance of the park to wildlife and people and revealed many possibilities for future learning. Our little explorers had a marvellous day!

Bus transport for Autumn Fixtures
All girls are expected to take the school buses provided to the Autumn Fixtures each Friday afternoon (for AWAY games only). Bus details are always provided at the bottom of the draw for each away game. The draw is placed on the St Peters App as soon as it is finalised each week.
If girls do not require a seat on the bus for any reason, please email your sport coordinator so buses are not waiting. If girls are not returning on the bus provided at the end of the games, students must advise the coordinator before they leave the venue.
A reminder to all students driving themselves to sporting fixtures after school, parental permission is required by the school for any students to drive themselves to and from fixtures. Parents are to email the sport coordinators and myself to give this permission. Students are not permitted to give other students lifts unless the parents of the passengers also email the sports coordinators & myself to notify of this arrangement. Many thanks for helping keep the girls safe whilst in our care.
Singlet presentations, starting line up introductions, lay ups, three pointers and half-time shooting contests; the Opens vs Old Scholars game had it all!
The Opens started the game off well, leading by five points just minutes into the game. With some sharp shooting from the Old scholars, they were able to secure the lead going into the second quarter. Opens displayed fantastic full court pressure in the second half, resulting in some turnovers which led to easy scoring in transition. However, the Old Scholars experience and shooting touch did not quaver, leading by 18 points in the second half. The Opens did not back down, as they showed tremendous effort on both ends of the court. The girls battled back, bringing the game within 6 points late in the 4th quarter. The final score Old Scholars 59 def Opens 50.
Congratulations to our Opens Basketball team and thanks to the Old Scholars for a great game. Special thanks to our SPOSA (the St Peters Old Scholars Association) who donated hats and lanyards to the Old Scholars. They were presented with their gifts at the end of the game.
Round 2 Games v St Aidan’s: Friday 19 March – Please CLICK HERE for the UPDATED draw (bus details are included).
It has been a great start to the season for QGSSSA Football with all teams starting with a win!
This round saw St Peters taking on Clayfield at Perry Park which is known for its large and well-maintained fields.
The Junior girls had a phenomenal performance winning their game 16-0. These kind of scores don’t come very often in Football but it is amazing to see such a high standard of talent in the team. The Intermediate team took on Brisbane State High and finished up with a 7-4 win. A shout out to Sienna O who put away four goals to secure the victory. The Senior girls had a much harder fight on their hands but persevered to score a stunning goal to win 1-0. The Open team came away with a 4-0 victory. It was a long, hard game but the team really rose to the occasion. There were a number of shots which hit the crossbar showing that this score line had the potential to be much higher. A big well done to all of the teams for their determination and efforts – it’s going to be a great season!

The Girls 2020/2021 season of BWPI Water Polo has finished for the season. Our awards breakup was held in the PAC Amphitheatre on Monday evening. With over 115 girls in the program and nine teams entered into the competition, it was a wonderful end to an eventful season. The girls should be incredibly proud of the season and with their performance each and every week. Although this season we didn’t reach any semi or grand finals, the girls improved each week in their pursuit to understanding the fundamentals of the sport, game play and team awareness in and out of the water. A very big thank you to our parents who continually support this program by driving their girls to their late training sessions of an evening at the 50m pool and game days on Saturdays at up to nine different pool locations over the season which runs in Terms 4 and 1 of the following year. We would like to thank and acknowledge our coaching staff who are instrumental in ensuring the girls are well prepared, skilled and ready to take to the pool each Saturday of the competition. Thank you also to our parents who took on the role of Team Manager or who volunteered each week to score their daughter’s game. With Covid-19 restrictions in place and spectators originally not able to enter the venues it was tricky for parents to watch their girls play on any given week. Your patience was appreciated during this challenging time.
Congratulations to the award recipients who were awarded either the Coaches award or the Most Valuable Player in each team who play in the competition at the ceremony on Monday night.
Lastly, thank you to all the girls in the program for excelling in our motto of Care, Dignity and Respect in a sport that can be very unpredictable and at times very challenging. Your team spirit and rising above to play fairly is a credit to you all and to our coaches who instil the level of skill and care to play this physically demanding sport.
