A very Happy Easter to our St Peters Springfield community! Easter is the highlight of the year, even more so than Christmas! Why? Because of the message of new life, love and hope that it brings.
Jesus’ death on the cross is one that the Romans used to cause suffering and humiliation. But even then, Jesus’ message could not be destroyed. We think of the angel, the open and empty tomb. We think of Jesus’ appearance to the women and to His other disciples, then later to hundreds of people as proof that he had resurrected and was miraculously alive. Jesus’ resurrection means that we have the opportunity to leave all our burdens, the things that weigh us down and restrict relationships, at the foot of the cross. He died so that we might have the forgiveness of sins and live life abundantly in God’s grace.
Easter provides an important time for personal reflection and renewal. These Easter holidays, students and families can pause and reflect on the beginning of the year to consider successes and areas for growth. It is a time when we can reflect on how we can foster more positive, productive relationships with others. It is a chance to challenge ourselves about how we can have a positive impact in our St Peters community and the wider community. It is a time to consider who we are and how we can be the best versions of ourselves.
The events of the last hours of Jesus’ life have meaning for us as a school, especially amidst the uncertainty of COVID-19, floods, storms and war abroad. When plans are constantly changing and we feel we are in the midst of a confusing, troubled and anxious world, we can know the peace and certainty that the risen Jesus gives us.
We have nearly made it to the end of what is arguably one of the most unusual terms in the history of Queensland education! I would like to thank our students, staff and parents/caregivers on their ability to navigate the unexpected events of our term and for their compassion, patience, understanding and support.
It is pleasing that we have still accomplished so many things as a St Peters community this term. Of particular note:
Our Preps have settled in very well, building new friendships and connecting with teachers, while discovering more about school life and routines;
Our Year 10s dressed up for their Year 10 Dinner along with their parents and received their Senior ties;
Our Year 12 students are now donning their beautiful St Peters jerseys and have their Senior badges after a wonderful induction ceremony;
We welcomed back some of our newest St Peters Old Scholars Association (SPOSA), presented them with academic awards at a special ceremony and listened to their thoughts on how they approached their studies to achieve success;
We had an extremely successful Community Focus Day to collect baby and other products for those families suffering in the floods and donated these to ‘Baby Give Back’, a Brisbane based charitable organisation managed by one of our past Founding teachers, Carly Lovell;
The boys’ swimming team has won 6 years in a row at the AIC Swimming Championships while the girls have won 9 years in a row at the QGSSSA Swimming Championships;
We celebrated Harmony Day and therefore cultural diversity, inclusiveness and respect, with students wearing cultural dress to school;
We had a very successful Twilight Group Tour from which we hope to have many additions to our growing school;
We had an extremely fun and bubble/glow-stick filled Primary disco open-air style on the Concourse thanks to our fantastic P&F;
We held out Installation Service to welcome our new staff and reaffirm our many continuing staff in their roles.
This is certainly not the whole list. We have much to be thankful for this term at St Peters Springfield.
Easter is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy sharing time with our families and friends, for resting, renewing and re-setting after such a big Term 1, for showing gratitude for the blessings and gifts we have been given.
The Easter holidays are also an opportunity to continue the learning momentum gently through activities that keep stimulating our students’ neurological pathways and keep their brains working, preferably in fun ways! While students may be drawn to technology for learning and entertaining, all families are encouraged to set tech-free time aside. Fun activities might include reading, drawing, painting, playing games, doing puzzles, Lego, craft, writing creative narratives and undertaking energising outdoor activities. Daily reading is one that should be prioritised particularly in a busy world; it expands our children’s minds and helps them to be ‘mindful.’ Through encouragement of prayer, we can also be refreshed and the light of hope can shine brightly in our lives.
The spirit of Easter is building with plans for P&F ‘bunnies’ to be handing out Easter eggs on the final day of term. We will also have a very special Whole School Easter Service that morning.
To all of our students and families, take care, continue to follow the COVID-19 advice and make smart choices to keep you and your loved ones safe these Easter holidays.
May the joy of the Easter season be with you and your family.

Ministry
Arise Lutheran Community Church
Arise is a Lutheran community that meets at St Peters, Springfield. It’s a place where you can come to know God’s love through Jesus, and find light and hope for your life, and connect with other families from St Peters and the wider community.
In our service you will hear God’s word, sing, pray and share in Holy Communion if you want to. There’s a message for the kids too.
I’m looking forward to holidays so we can rest and refresh from possibly the strangest school term anyone can remember. Who’d have thought we wouldn’t start school on site until Week 3? Who would have thought we’d have closures due to rain, floods and storms? And who’d have thought we’d experience thousands of cases of Covid-19 daily in our community, after enduring lockdowns for a small handful of cases? Experienced teachers and school leaders will say they have never experienced such a difficult term. The relentless changes week to week, day to day, even hour to hour, are exhausting. The holidays will be a welcome circuit breaker.
During the holidays there is an event even more welcome than a few days off work and school. It’s Easter. It’s the day that changes the world. It’s the day we celebrate that everything is not as it seems, and that’s a great thing!
Easter is the day Jesus rose from the dead. He was crucified by Roman soldiers one Friday, falsely accused of blasphemy and insurrection. His followers hurriedly placed his body in a new tomb before sunset and the commencement of the Sabbath day. On the Sunday morning some women went to the tomb to complete the burial rites properly, only to find the stone rolled back and the tomb open. These women encountered angels telling them Jesus was not there and that he had risen from the dead. Then the risen, living Jesus appeared to his disciples variously over the course of the next 40 days. He showed that he had, in fact, been raised from the dead.
Resurrection changes everything.
Resurrection gives us life. It redefines what we know about life and death. The certainty of death after life is qualified by this new life that came to be after death. There is now hope for all who die that they too will rise. As we are joined to Jesus, united with him in faith and baptism, we too will experience resurrection to eternal life.
Resurrection gives us hope. Even times of great suffering, trouble and trauma, can be endured knowing they will not have the final word in our lives. They have been overcome, just as death has been overcome. As we trust in Jesus we know we have the promise of resurrection to eternal life, just as Jesus rose.
Resurrection gives us joy. Even in the sadness of our lives, the knowledge that Jesus is alive despite all that happened to him fills us with joy. We know the suffering and sadness of our present time is temporary, and will give way to better, brighter days and a joyful future which has no end.
When we see signs of suffering and death around us, resurrection changes our perspective. The empty tomb is a sign that Jesus is risen and promises that we too will rise with him.
May you embrace the message of Easter, and know the blessings of resurrection in your life now and forever.

Gregg Dreise Author Visit
Last week, the Year 3 students were entertained by Gregg Dreise, the author of many Aboriginal Books that tell stories from the Dreamtime. He is from Gamililaraay country in South-west Queensland and North-West New South Wales. During his visit, students participated in language learning and storytelling activities. Students had so much fun listening to him and participated in group activities. Gregg is passionate about his language and culture and loves to share it with everyone.
If you would like to find out more about Gregg or his stories, please feel free to visit his website, https://www.greggdreise.com.au/.
Harmony Week - Everyone Belongs
St Peters Springfield Primary students came together on Wednesday 16 March to celebrate Harmony Week. It is a week where we recognise diversity and inclusion. It is celebrated to coincide with 21 March which is the International day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
During our two Assemblies we celebrated that our school is a multi-cultural community and that it is important to be inclusive and respectful regardless of cultural or linguistic backgrounds.
It was wonderful to see many of our students wear their cultural dress as well as students wearing a touch of orange in support of the day. Traditionally orange signifies social communication and meaningful conversations. It also relates to the freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect.
Throughout the year we continue to respect the traditions of our school families and celebrate that our multicultural society is an integral part of our national identity.
APSMO Maths Olympiad (Years 5-6)
The APSMO Maths Olympiad has commenced for 2022. The competition is aimed at challenging participants' maths problem solving abilities, and is an ideal format for high achieving students to work in a competitive environment with challenging questions to hone their skills. Students compete against each other, as well as teams from other schools. There are five rounds of competition; each comprising of five questions that must be completed in a specified time-frame of thirty minutes. Participants attend team meetings and practise sessions in the weeks leading up to each competition, during which they are taught the skills and techniques required to develop maths problem solving skills. All students who complete the Maths Olympiad receive a certificate, and individual and team awards are also available.

Primary Disco Friday 18 March
Bubbles, music and disco made the Term 1 Primary Disco a fabulous afternoon. A big thank you to our P&F who organised the Concourse ready for the discos to ensure we could provide a safe venue for students to enjoy the dancing. It also gave parents the opportunity to see their children having fun.
Thank you also to our teaching staff who stayed to supervise and join in the fun at a very busy time of the term. It was greatly appreciated.

Year 10 Digital Technology students learning how to hack
A small group of Year 10 students participated in the online Cyber Live event last Wednesday morning. Cyber Live teaches students how to avert a cyber security disaster.
It’s the scenario cyber security experts have been fearing for years: hackers have launched a mass infrastructure attack on targets around the world and Sydney is next – this is what school students around Australia faced last week during Grok Academy’s Cyber Live, an immersive cyber security training event.
Grok Academy is a digital skills training platform supporting the Australian Curriculum: Digital Technologies. St Peters Lutheran College Springfield is a recognised Champion school having a significant number of students participating in a range of events and competitions each year.
Cyber Live tries to gamify the cyber security learning experience through fictionalised news footage, a world map filled with objectives to complete, and a custom-built set of apps mimicking those used in the real world.
The program teaches security topics like cryptography (including the use of cyphers and steganography), how to spot a phishing attempt, and web application security.
The aim was to train the next generation in digital skills through an engaging program that teaches expertise the industry needs in response to constant industry calls for more cyber specialists.
Each of the big four banks – Westpac, NAB, CommBank, and ANZ – partnered with Wednesday’s Cyber Live event in a cohesive sign of support for the training program.
As I am writing this it is National Day of Action against Bullying. Last week’s article spoke to the issues that we see in schools around Bullying. Today though, I want to focus on the antidote of bullying, kindness.
Kindness is a strength, we can harness it – it is also one of the characteristics that we all want our children to have. Last week on assembly one of our captains, Leilani, spoke about Self-Kindness. A concept that we don’t talk about as much as kindness to others, but a concept that is vital for resilience and coping.
In a World that is full of distraction, and business, and work, and children, we can often forget to look after the most important person, ourselves. In order to ‘do good’ we must focus on ‘feeling good’. And that means being kind to ourselves.
Treating yourself kindly – through your actions and words and behaviours sets a great model for your children to do the same. Our kids are going through a lot alongside you, and they already have a brain that is negatively wired to hunt for scary, big and frightening things – and they don’t have to look very far to find those at this time. When they hear you be hard on yourselves, that is what they do also, criticising yourself builds a habit of being self-critical in your young people. The best way to prevent this is to practice self-compassion and kindness toward yourself, this can be fantastic for relationships too – being vulnerable with your young people can help them to see that although things are chaotic and unpredictable that they can accept and let go of high expectations and disappointments too.
I encourage you to treat yourselves kindly – it’s an incredibly hard job to raise children, work, make adult decisions and take care of yourselves and others if you are not practicing kindness to yourself. We are living in time with a lot of negative incoming traffic, so please this week try and remind yourself that you are doing the best you can, because you really are, and that you have remarkable ability to take care of yourselves, and that self-care is essential for your flourishing, and the flourishing of your family.

The Value of Music in the Curriculum
Here at St Peters Springfield, students are fortunate to participate in two Music Curriculum lessons each week. While Music learning is valuable in its own right, neuroscience researchers are continually discovering the benefits of music learning to academic progress and brain development. The summarised, brief article below is an overview of a relevant recent study.
If You Want Smarter Kids Teach Them Music … According to MIT
By Harley Manson
Most parents want their children to be intelligent and successful. And while some experts have pushed parents to teach their children coding, new research is pointing to music as the gateway to smarter kids.
While coding does allow for a great advantage when it comes to technology, it lacks many benefits that music provides. The argument to teach children code is that it helps them with their math and language skills. However, recent research carried out by MIT and published in the Journal of Neuroscience is now showing how powerful music cam be on a child’s brain development.
According to the authors of the study, learning music during our early life makes the brain more connected, which in turn, makes their brains neurologically capable of many things, not just music. “This study, among other studies, demonstrates how the human brain is shaped by experience,” explains co-author Lutz Jancke. What they found in their study was that musical brains produce more structural and functional connections when compared to those who don’t learn music.
To carry out their study, the researchers had 103 professional musicians and 50 non-musicians go in for brain scans. Once the scans were taken, they were compared. What they found, was that the musicians all have “strikingly similar networks.” Additionally, they had far more structural and functional connections than non-musicians, especially in the areas that were connected to speech and sound. Another factor that played a major role was how early the musicians had begun learning music. “The earlier the musicians had started with musical practice, the stronger these connectivities,” Jancke says.
Their takeaway was that early music training could help children to develop stronger neural pathways, and in turn, make them smarter. “If someone told me then about the possibility of changing the wiring of my brain, I might have spent more time practicing the piano and less time on the soccer field,” Leipold says.
Performance Congratulations
Congratulations to two of our school choirs for their recent performances. Con Brio performed at the recent Academic Honours Assembly, and the combined Bella Voce and Con Brio choirs performed for the Installation Service for Principal.

“Don’t ask yourself what the world needs; ask yourself what makes you come alive. And then go and do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” Anon
I can’t believe I am writing the last Rock article for Term 1 as we approach the Easter Holidays. What a term!
As we head into the break, I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone of the commitment the girls are making when they sign up to a sport at St Peters. We pride ourselves on many things but when it comes to sport, we particularly value commitment and communication. Commitment to a team is something we emphasise in Girls Sport, and parents we would appreciate your support in reiterating the importance of honouring a commitment. When girls sign on for a sport it is important, they consider whether they can uphold this commitment for the season. Each sport will have two training sessions and a game/meet each week in season and it is vital that girls do their best to attend these sessions. If they are unable to attend a session, we ask the girls to please communicate this with their Coach and the Coordinator of the sport.
We understand this term has had many challenges and we look forward to starting a fresh in Term 2.
From all of us in Sports House, we wish you a Happy Easter and have a wonderful, safe holiday.

Last Friday we saw the traditional rivalry between the Old Scholars and 2022 Open Girls Basketball team take place in the Indoor Gym. After an unfortunate start to the season, Round 2 saw many Football fields around Brisbane make a fantastic recovery. This allowed St Peters to host Clayfield to kick off our season. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, our Open and Senior A teams had their matches cancelled. We were able to mix these teams together to allow them to have a strong hit out at Toowong and work on their match fitness on the large pitch.
The Intermediate girls had a convincing 8-0 win with an exciting performance from all the girls involved. A special well done to the goalkeeper, Rose Jolly for keeping the opposition scoreless, and to April F on finishing with three goals.
Some of our Junior girls had their first taste of QGSSSA sport and managed to come away with a 3-1 win in a tough match. It was so great to see the competitive nature, along with the smiles from all the girls.
Our Senior B team fought hard but went down 7-2 against St Aidan’s but have shown some great signs of positive improvement and enjoyment for the sport.
Well done to all teams – it is going to be an exciting season!
Please CLICK HERE for details of the Round 3 Draw for this Friday afternoon – The draw can also be found on the St Peters App.
Round 2 saw our first official games for the season. The 9As and 8As has excellent wins against Clayfield College, as did the Senior Bs against Brisbane Girl’s Grammar School (2), whilst the 8Bs and 7Bs suffered narrow defeats against their Brisbane Girls Grammar School (2) opponents. This week all St Peters teams will be in action against St Aidan’s. The games will be spread over Harts Rd Oval and Mayer Oval so please check the Draw on the St Peters App for game locations. We’d love to see as many families and friends cheering the girls on as they play these formidable opponents.

U18B For the third time this season our Open Water Polo team took on the Polo Bears, this time it was the Semi Final fourth place v first place. Back in Round 1(9 October 2021) we played them and went down 8-4. We played them again in Round 10 (19 February 2022) and lost to them 12-2. The girls played a great game in defense, they really hassled the Polo Bears. Sian F playing in Centre Forward position gained three five metre penalties, unfortunately, we were unable to convert them. Remaya B had an absolute cracker of a game in goals.
The turnaround in our performance from Round 10 to the Semi Final was remarkable. It was great to see the girls talking, backing each other up and playing great Water Polo.
It was an emotional day for our Year 12 girls Abi W, Clarinda H, Sian F, Milly T, Ruby G-D, Ella C & Zoe M but they certainly did St Peters proud by the way they played.
We lost the match 9-3.
U14C Our U14C team had a fantastic season finishing in second place on the ladder after the last round, we played UQ Barras in the Semi Final (second v third).
Unfortunately for us we had four girls out sick for Saturday’s game.
We were able to get special exemption for super sub Laura McK to play up from out U13B team. With limited subs we held Barras to 1-1 draw at half time, the second quarter the score was 2-2 for a while and then 3-2. The third quarter saw us down 3-5. The final score was a 3-7 loss.
Fatigue and having the sun in our eyes in the second half was very tough. Emily T in goals stopped some great attempts and our overall teamwork in both attack and defense was a real credit to St Peters.

On Saturday 12 March (AIC Round 6), St Peters Boys Sport embraced and supported a day of cancer awareness. Our Cricketers, from Years 5 through to Opens, participated in ‘Pink Stumps Day’ in conjunction with the McGrath Foundation, whilst our 1st Volleyball Team wore orange in support of Leukaemia. It was so wonderful to see our sporting community, together with Marist College, get around these great initiatives to support such great causes.
Last Saturday 19 March, saw the completion of our Term 1 sports of AIC Cricket, AIC Australian Rules and AIC Volleyball. It certainly was a disruptive and tough season for everyone but most importantly, all who were involved exhibited resilience, determination, and endless enthusiasm week after week. Despite premiership points being awarded to only ‘First’ teams for Term 1 Boys Sport in 2022, all other age divisions remained equally competitive when competing. We are extremely proud of how all our boys have performed, how hard they have trained, competed well and above all displaying ‘Plus Ultra’ both on and off the sporting field.

2021 AIC Cross Country & Runners Club
Earlier this term we emailed each boy from Years 7 to 12 about signing on for Cross Country. We do strongly encourage any boy who is looking at participating in a Term 2 sport (AIC Rugby and AIC Football) or a Term 3 sport (AIC Basketball and AIC Tennis) to get along to at least one Cross Country / Runners Club session each week. This is a fantastic way to improve their overall fitness and will stand them in good preparation for their up-and-coming team sporting season.
Cross Country at St Peters has traditionally been well received and very competitive at both AIC and QGSSA. Let’s work hard in 2022 to maintain this high standard and consolidate on past years participation and performances. Training times for Cross Country can be found on the St Peters App.
Wet Weather and Cancellations
With regards to wet weather and any unforeseen or potential cancellations of AIC sports, please ensure that you keep an eye out for notifications and alerts via the St Peters App. We will endeavour to keep everyone updated on both training cancellations and game day changes as the week progresses.
