A very warm welcome back to Term 2. I trust that the term break was an opportunity for many people to relax, refresh and reconnect with family and friends. A very special welcome is extended to those new families that have joined St Peters this term. We hope that you settle in and feel part of our community very quickly.
Students (hopefully in collaboration with their parents) should have reflected on their Term 1 Interim Report Card and established their learning goals for the Term ahead. Having a clear direction and targets together with steps in place to achieve them are critical to our young people achieving their academic Personal Bests. It is important that all students get straight back into the routine of school and study in order to build solid foundations and momentum right from the start. What our students do now, will stand them in good stead for all that is to come as the term progresses.
Ironbark Turns 50
Over the middle weekend of the Term break, Old Scholars from the first group of students to attend the pilot program for Ironbark in April to June of 1974 returned to celebrate 50 years. It was a unique program of outdoor education and farm life, living and learning together for nine weeks. At the time, Ironbark was an innovation that was unlike anything that had ever been undertaken in the Australian Educational landscape.
I was fortunate to spend a few hours with that pilot group of Old Scholars, now all aged in their mid-60s for that 50th Anniversary Weekend. I was curious to understand why they attended? What was the impact of Ironbark on them at the time? What has been the impact of Ironbark on their life? In listening to the reflections of that Pilot Group from 1974, Ironbark played a pivotal role in shaping their identity, the formation of their character and was a time of immense personal growth. Their responses could have been and are the responses of each of the successive cohorts who have attended Ironbark over the ensuing 50 years. I constantly meet Old Scholars who tell me that Ironbark shaped them as a person.
There is little doubt that over the past 50 years, Ironbark has become one of the iconic aspects of St Peters Education. It is a true differentiator in the St Peters offering and the embodiment of Plus Ultra, More Beyond. It is central to the St Peters way and the development of our Plus Ultra Mindset.
Owen Ronalds, Class of 1976 who attended that first Pilot Group in 1974 captures the significance of Ironbark well when he wrote of his Ironbark experience – ‘I have learned a lot, and changed a lot here. I know that it will affect the rest of my life, and my relationship to other people. I hope and pray that I can return here. This phase has been one of the best, most happy times of my life’.
Long may this continue.
Tim Kotzur Head of College
Thank you and welcome back
A very warm welcome back to Term 2, 2024!
January feels like it was just a moment ago, when I was introducing myself to the College. I want to sincerely thank the whole community for your warm welcome and support throughout Term 1.
Each day I continue to be thankful for the school and its people. There is a real warmth that can been seen and felt everyday as you walk around the campus and interact with students, parents and staff, demonstrating our shared vision of “A Learning Community where People Flourish”.
NEW STAFF
I am pleased to welcome the following members of staff into the College and into new roles within the Community.
We are elated to announce Ms Eldene Johnston has joined the English and Humanities departments in the Secondary Years and will be teaching Senior English and Junior High Humanities. Ms Johnston comes to us with a wealth of experience and is enthusiastic to join the vibrant and motivated teaching staff at St Peters. Also in Secondary, we have a Business and Mathematics teacher in training who will be at the College for six weeks, Ms Min Wang.
In the Primary Years, Mrs Tanya McMann has joined us and is teaching 4T from Term 2. Mrs McMann also has a wealth of experience and has fulfilled primary teaching and leadership roles in her previous schools.
In the Office and Corporate staff, we would like to welcome Ms Jess Hetherington as the Marketing and Events Officer and Ms Katie Doyle joining as Administration Assistant, both of whom commenced recently. Ms Jade Cooper, who many of you know through enrolments, has accepted a change of role and has commenced as the Personal Assistant to the Head of Springfield. I am very excited to work closely with Ms Cooper into the future.
NewS From around the College
Year 9 are back together at the College for the first time this year. It was my pleasure to join both groups at Ironbark for their graduations and I want to acknowledge them all for the courage they have shown in engaging well with the program. Ironbark is an iconic part of a St Peters education and we are excited to continue to build on their substantial growth and experiences.
The Primary Discos, held late in Term 1, were an absolute success! This was the first time that we have used JHP as the venue and it was excellent. There were lights, bubbles, glow sticks, funky beats, crazy dancing and plenty of sparkly outfits to match. We need to express our appreciation to the Parents & Friends, Secondary Years student DJ’s, Pastor Matt, Mrs Sabri and many more Primary Years staff for their support to make the event happen. A special thank you also to Parents & Friends for the complementary coffee van that allowed parents the opportunity for a chat and to engage with other with each other, as well as share in the fun of the disco.
The Stage 3B development of the Junior High Precinct (JHP) continues to progress, albeit with some challenges that have affected the final date of completion. Having been able to view the progress, I can truly say that the facility would rival any other school or College. Large spaces, modern facilities and styling, coupled with well-thought-out layouts to maximise teaching and learning time, are all aspects that the whole community will appreciate when we begin to access and use this new space in the near future.
I have been pleased to make assessments of key facilities and arrange for renewal, upgrading and purchase of new equipment to support some of the everyday activities of students. In particular, small things such as the renewing of nets on the basketball and netball hoops and the support from the Parents & Friends in the purchase of new portable soccer goals for the oval have been great additions. These small things will continue to enhance student experience every day.
The collaborative courtyards behind Curnow House will soon be the host of many break-time ping-pong tournaments, with the imminent arrival of our new outdoor ping-pong tables.
SERVICE LEARNING – WALK MY WAY
As a College, we are supporting the Australian Lutheran World Service event “Walk My Way – Ukraine” on Saturday 11 May. There was communication forwarded to the community on 2 April with the details of the event and how to participate. There are options for all students and families and I ask you to consider joining me and many other St Peters staff on 11 May as we raise money, build awareness and seek to make a difference in our world. Further information will also form part of Chaplain Ben’s article this week.
Thank you and God’s richest blessings for Term 2.

Faith and Doubt
In Senior School Chapels at Indooroopilly this term, we are exploring misconceptions about Christians. One misconception out there is that a person of religious or Christian faith cannot doubt. This misconception believes that doubt and faith do not mix.
There is a classic Easter story in the gospels of the New Testament that dispels this misunderstanding. It’s the story of 'Doubting Thomas'. Thomas, one of the twelve disciples did not see Jesus after he rose from the dead. Thomas who is called the doubter because he said to his fellow disciples I want proof. I want to see evidence that Jesus is alive and risen from the dead. I want to stick my hands into Jesus' pierced side and see his nail-wounded hands for myself. Thomas doubts Jesus is alive. He wants to see for himself that it is Jesus that the other disciples have seen, not a ghost, apparition, or something else.
When Jesus confronts Thomas, he says to him see my wounds, stick your hand into my side. Thomas has the answer he is looking for and believes it is Christ his Lord.
What proof or evidence are you looking for, or do you need, to believe in Jesus as the one who has conquered death and is your living, Lord?
Thomas doubted. But his initial doubt was not a bad thing as it led him to question and look for the truth. When we likewise doubt it can also be a positive thing if the doubt leads us to search for the truth, the wonder and the mystery of life. God can use our doubt to lead to faith and use it for his good purposes. Doubt is part of our journey to faith, and in faith. Of course, for some people serious unanswered doubt can lead to unbelief. But when I reflect on my faith journey when I have been honest to God and brought my doubts to God as Thomas did, my faith has been strengthened and made more certain. In the struggle of doubt, God can work faith in us.
There is a great quote from a Christian theologian called Frederick Buechner who said;
“Whether your faith is that there is a God or that there is not a God, if you don’t have any doubts you are either kidding yourself or asleep. Doubts are the ants in the pants of faith. They keep it awake and moving.”
As you continue your journey through life and this term at St Peters, may you be encouraged by your doubts. May God lead you through your doubts to trust and confidence in his risen Son. And may you be blessed with belief even though you have not seen Jesus. Jesus the wounded human yet God’s son, risen and alive.
Let’s pray: Lord Jesus, thank you for letting Thomas doubt, and for showing yourself after your resurrection. Strengthen our faith in you as the living Son of God. Amen.

Walk My Way Ukraine is coming quick!
St Peters families and friends, Walk My Way is only a few weeks away!
Over the coming few weeks at St Peters Springfield, we will be running a number of activities to build momentum towards the 11 May Walk My Way - Ukraine event. We are going to be running a loose change fundraiser (so start collecting your coins now), a doughnut drive (more information coming soon) and a couple of prizes for the class with the most walkers and the student who raises the most money.
Please see the above flyer for the event put out by ALWS (Australian Lutheran World Service, the event organisers) sharing their heart for this important cause. Even one person can make a difference in the world and events like these help our students to see the impact they can have.
As a reminder, St Peters Springfield is organising two walking teams and we are keen to have as many students and parents Walk My Way with us as part of our teams.
Our teams are:
St Peters Springfield – Going the Distance walking 12.5km with Mr Brown
St Peters Springfield – 500 Miles walking 3km with Chappie Ben
Please register by 26 April and fill in our St Peters Springfield consent form so we can know to look for you on the day! (But why wait when you can register today?)
It will be an amazing day and I am incredibly excited to see the St Peters teams show up to make a difference for Ukraine!

Year 12 Formal
One of the highlights of the St Peters College calendar year is undoubtedly the much-anticipated Year 12 Formal. Held at the iconic Grandview Room at Hillstone St Lucia on Tuesday 26 March, the event was spectacular and thoroughly enjoyed by staff, students, and parents.
The inclement weather failed to dampen the occasion, with students and their partners arriving in style and meeting their families in the Rosewood Room. Students took the opportunity to get photos and socialise with friends and family prior to the formal beginning.
Just before 7:00pm, the students bid farewell to their families and entered the Grandview Room in preparation for the formal to commence. The evening was hosted by Taashya and Aditya. Culture Captain, Ben, performed the Welcome to Country, while Faith Captains Makenzie and Sarah began the evening with Grace.
Following entrées, a video montage was played of the student’s journey of their time at St Peters. Mrs Sarah Johnson spoke on behalf of the staff, with words of wisdom cleverly themed through messages from Disney movies. Pranay and Armani, two students who have been part of the St Peters Community since Prep, then shared experiences from their journey. The formalities of the evening finished with a light-hearted ‘Most Likely To’ awards ceremony, in which the students voted on a variety of categories, including ‘Most likely to go to the Olympics’ and ‘Most likely to become Prime Minister.’ Following dessert students (and some staff) filled the dance floor and made use of the photo booth to create visual memories to take home with them.
Overall, it was a joyous evening, with something for everyone to enjoy, creating unforgettable memories that will last a lifetime. The Class of 2024 should be commended on the way they conducted themselves and we wish them all the best for the remainder of the year and into the future, carrying with them the lessons learned and the friendships forged during their time at St Peters.

Meanwhile, the Football program has been gearing up since last year, itching for some action against GPS schools. Chess is deep into trial matches at IONA.
The stage is set, the players are pumped—let's make this term one to remember!
Congratulations and thank you

Many thanks to the numerous coaches who willingly provide wonderful guidance and knowledge to all our boys who participate in St Peters boys Sport. I truly hope that you have had a great experience and we look forward to your involvement again in 2025.
Finally, to the boys, thank you all for ‘turning up for our College’ each and every week. Your passion to play at your best, to train at your best and to bring to life memorable St Peters sporting moments is very much appreciated. Thank you for keeping the St Peters spirit of ‘Plus Ultra’ alive!

Football News
Over the holidays, our Football Program ran a Easter Football Clinic, a coaching workshop and featured the Old Scholars Football match on Saturday 13 April. The Football clinic kicked off a day for the Football fiesta with over 50 students attending and was overseen by Mr Remo Buess, ex-Brisbane Roar player and a team of SPOSA coaches focusing on Football fundamentals with game-based activities. Some of the younger students featured as mascots for the Old Scholars team accompanying them onto the Harts Road Oval field as they walked out before the game. It was fantastic to see so many young students staying after the clinic and watching the match, a great show of culture and a credit to the work of Mr Mulligan, Mr Buess and the Football Support Group.
The David Brown Cup was hotly contested in a high-scoring match with both teams trading goals early for a 1-1 draw, but ultimately triumphed over youth with the Old Scholars running out 6-3 winners. Congratulations on an entertaining match!
Finally the day was wrapped up with a coaching workshop overseen by Adam Pengelly, Socceroos Analyst and U23 Matildas assistant coach. Coaches were taken through key principles of play and how to make adjustments in matches as well as structure a half-time team talk with efficiency. We look forward to working with Adam again this term to support our coaching teams.
Rugby News
In the world of Rugby Union, the past week has been nothing short of exhilarating. Senior Rugby camp emerged as a resounding success, with boys immersing themselves in three nights at Boys Boarding and two nights of camaraderie at Ironbark. The camp wasn't just about fun; it was a crucible for team bonding, with a series of challenging activities fostering an unbreakable team spirit. With set goals for the season, these boys are already showing tremendous dedication and focus in their pursuit of excellence. Boys were challenged with outdoor education and team building activities such as general farm job maintenance and an egg drop challenge where boys were split into two teams and tasked with designing a suitable capsule for egg and dropping from an incredible height and ensuring the egg remained intact. To demonstrate teamwork and leaning on one another, boys needed to build a stretcher out of everyday materials for a 5km hike with rotating students lying on the stretcher.
Meanwhile, the Ballymore Cup showcased our talent on a competitive stage. Our U15 team displayed commendable prowess, engaging in spirited matches throughout the weekend. However, it was the U18 squad that truly stole the show, securing the top spot in their division with an undefeated streak over the three-day event.
As we celebrate these achievements, let's continue to support and cheer for our Rugby Union teams as they strive for greatness on and off the field. Our Rugby Union Teams will play the majority of their games at Mayer Oval on Saturday, so come on down for our Trial Round!
Rowing News
Boys Rowing Camp was an amazing week of hard work, huge meals and LOTS of fun and games. The four day camp was held at Pine Rivers Rowing Club on Lake Kurwongbah and the boys were accommodated across the road at the YMCA North Pine Lodge. There were four boys’ dorms comprised of multi-year level groups, each captained by our seniors Flynn G, Luca K, Ted A and Sam M.
Day 1 started with ergo trials and getting the boats rigged and ready to train. Day 2 began with sculls trials over a 2km course for the Senior Shed and 1km course for the Junior Shed before training started in earnest once crews were announced at morning tea. All our Year 10’s also had the opportunity to row in the 8+ during camp and for most this was the first time they had rowed in a sweep boat.
Day 3 involved three long sessions for the Senior Shed whilst the Junior Shed had the opportunity for some R&R at the YMCA pool, after two long sessions early in the day. We concluded the day with our ‘Talent Night’ which can only be described as hilarious. Day 4 started with a mini regatta where crews started on handicaps and raced each other. We were joined on the final day by several old scholars who returned to join the senior boys for a session in the 8+.
New friendships, new blisters and a great sense of camaraderie were what we brought home.
The SQSRC regatta season commences shortly with 4 regattas on the following dates at the Queensland State Rowing Centre, Wyaralong:
Regatta 1 – Saturday 4 May
Regatta 2 – Saturday 18 May
Regatta 3 – Saturday 25 May
Trophy Regatta – Saturday 8 June
More information about regattas including the regatta draw (when available from Rowing QLD) will be posted on the Sports App Rowing in due course.

Last term, we held our Old Scholars Basketball game. The game between Our Opens Basketball team and Old Scholars is always a thrilling match. The Opens put up a good fight but it wasn't enough for the skill and experience of the Old Scholars.
For our Opens team it's a great experience to play against more physical, experienced players. Our opens team definitely learnt from the Old Scholars and will put this into practice for the remainder of the QGSSSA season.
With help from SPOSA, the Old Scholars got to enjoy some refreshments after the game, which was an opportunity to connect with the current students.
