I write on the first day of Term 2 for our students and I am pleased to once again see and hear their presence on the grounds and in classrooms.  A special welcome back to our Year 9 students who have not been in class since 19 February having undertaken their 5-week Ironbark experience.

Year 9 students graduated from Ironbark at Crows Nest on Saturday 27 March in the presence of their families, the Ironbark staff and a number of our Springfield staff team.  It was a perfect day for a graduation ceremony and a delight to see families reunited and the heartfelt gratitude of our students to the Ironbark staff on display.

Increasing attention is being paid in our country and the world to the need for holistic education that effectively develops essential capabilities for not only employment but active citizenship, wellbeing and fulfilled living.  This is reflected in global perspective by organisations such as the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development and was again voiced locally last month through an Independent Schools Queensland report, Thinking Differently About Senior Schooling?

Lutheran schools have always been dedicated to the holistic development and education of our young people for their own wellbeing and flourishing and for the benefit of our society and world.  The St Peters Ironbark program was trialled in 1974, formally commenced in 1976 and is an overt expression and declaration of that commitment.  Ironbark not only develops a greater understanding of oneself and others but unites the whole cohorts and St Peters students together across campuses and generations.

Research shows that outdoor education has a significant effect on learning with greater benefits from programs longer than 20 days.  One meta-analysis found significant effects in problem-solving skills, learning about facing challenges, seeking feedback, adapting to peer cooperative learning and enhanced self-regulation.  Other studies have found significant, positive changes in self-belief, capacity to handle stress, social skills, situational leadership and self-discipline and time management. 

Now that our Year 9 students are back on-site, they will immediately engage not only in their learning but in the appointment of Junior High Captains in the light of their collective experience.

As Mrs Grotherr and I departed from the graduation, it was a joy to see families sharing lunch together, scattered around the Ironbark grounds/farm and to see students showing off their woodchopping prowess and taking family members on a tour.

Ironbark is an irreplaceable experience of lasting significance.  We are tremendously grateful to Matthew Sullivan, Director of Ironbark, and his team for their expertise, leadership and care of our young people.

With Term 2 commencing today, QPS Ipswich District Crime Prevention in support of Department of Transport and Main Roads, are raising awareness of road safety around school zones.

Unfortunately our incident and fatality rate have not slowed down during this time, and with school resuming today what better way to remind us all to slow down than a message from the Australian Road Safety Foundation. 

They have teamed up with Spotify to create a cut-through message that alerts drivers within 5km of a school zone. This is so great to see that Road Safety is reaching new platforms to educate all drivers.

I hope and pray that you had a restful and refreshing Easter break and had the opportunity to reflect on the meaning of the resurrection of Christ for you.

After the lockdown at the end of Term 1 and extended restrictions during the holidays, it was wonderful to be able to gather again in person at the start of Term 2 for both staff and then students on Tuesday.

We finally managed to publicly pray for and bless our new staff through the rite of installation and for the first time in more than a year we were able to offer Holy Communion to the staff at our staff opening chapel. It really made it clear how important this special celebration is for many of our community, as we encounter the risen Christ in bread and wine, and what a blessing it is to gather face to face.

On Friday we will gather as a whole school community to commemorate ANZAC Day for the first time since 2019.

We certainly hope that learning and teaching can continue in the community throughout this term. But we are also cognisant of how quickly things can change and we think of and pray for the people in other parts of the world who continue to experience lockdowns and severe effects of the pandemic.

May you draw comfort and strength from the resurrection, which assures us that God’s love is stronger than even death and that through Christ we have an open, positive future.

Christ is risen. He is risen indeed!

A very big thank you to our school community for supplying the food products such as Tim Tams, Vegemite and Shapes for our Anzac care packages. The students wrote letters, prays, cards and jokes that were also included. Over the 6 years of participating with Australia Post Springfield on this project, it is the most care packages we have packed. The 110 boxes will be making their way to our troops in different parts of the world and we know that they are appreciated by all who receive a package.

Author, artist and songwriter Gregg Dreise visited St Peters Springfield at the end of Term 1 to share his knowledge and understanding of his culture. The students in years 3, 6, 7 and 8 were fascinated by his stories, songs and experiences as a proud Kamilaroi and Yuwalayaay man. Gregg discussed a range of topics: First Nations Peoples’ connection to country; the Indigenous perspective on leadership, law and justice; Indigenous struggles throughout the 20th century; and the Indigenous perspective on access to Uluru. His engaging manner and passion for his culture was inspirational for all involved.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award program first began in 1956. Prince Philip (HRH The Duke of Edinburgh) created the award in collaboration with Kurt Hahn, a German educator and founder of the Outward Bound program and Lord Hunt, who was the leader of the first successful ascent of Everest.

The goal was to create balanced young men (and later women).

Up until his recent death, Prince Philip remained connected to the award program, however, Prince Edward (the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh’s youngest son) is the Chairman of the award committee these days.

The program is offered to all young people aged from 14 years old to 24 years old. There are three levels: Bronze, Silver, and Gold (each getting progressively more challenging). Within each award there are four sections (physical recreation, skills, voluntary service and an Adventurous Journey). At the Gold level there is also a residential project. Recipients of the awards demonstrate that they can set goals and show self-improvement through persistence and achievement. These skills are highly appreciated by employers.

Noosa River Silver Qualifying Adventurous Journey

During the Easter break, two St Peters Lutheran College Springfield joined others to complete their Silver Adventurous Journey, canoeing at Noosa. Congratulations to Adam V in Year 10 and Lena D in Year 11 on this achievement.

Year 9 Duke of Edinburgh Meetings on Fridays

This year we are blessed with 27 new Bronze participants in Year 9! To help our Year 9 participants get set up there will be compulsory meetings in Term Two.

On Fridays, we will meet in CH06 from 12:35 to 1:15 (please bring lunch to eat in the room).

The purpose of these meetings will be to:

• Discuss your planned activities
• Discuss possible assessors
• Provide help with logging your Adventurous Journey
• Assist with logging your activities if required
• Answer any questions or concerns that you may have

Our Year 6 students were thrilled to have their 2021 Student Leadership Shirts presented by Mrs West-McInnes on our first day back of Term 2. These commemorative shirts will be able to be worn on days when students wear their sports uniform so that they are recognisable on the playground, whilst completing their leadership duties. As a part of the shirt design process, students were able to nominate a creative nickname to put on the back of these shirts. We look forward to seeing our Year 6’s wearing their shirts with pride out in the playground.

On Friday March 26th the Preps recognised World Epilepsy Day, also called Purple day. The day was started 12 years ago to increase awareness about epilepsy.

Like many other conditions, epilepsy can be difficult to understand and talk about. It is an important conversation to have with children since epilepsy Australia statistics show approximately 1 in 200 students in Australia have epilepsy. To commemorate the day, the Preps wore purple and donated a gold coin.  We also read a book about Epilepsy and will be purchasing more child friendly books about epilepsy for the library for students to book out and develop their understanding.  

Private Tuition Programme

Tutor timetables have been distributed by tutors to parents and students.  Tuition will be commencing this week (Week 1) and continue each week throughout the term.  With the number of Monday holidays, there have been time and day adjustments for some tutors, to maintain student progress.   Please make note of the alterations.

Pre-Service Teacher

Mr Daniel Truong, a pre-service teacher, will be joining us for six weeks.  Mr Truong is studying at the University of Queensland, planning to complete his Master of Teaching degree later this year.  Mr Truong will be working primarily with Class Music students and assisting with the String Ensembles, but will also be experiencing the band programme and the choral programme during his time with us.

St Peters ANZAC Service

Our musicians will be performing during the school’s ANZAC Service.  Fella Voce choir are leading the hymns and anthems, and Con Brio will be joined by Cantabile Strings for the Music Item.  Con Brio and Cantabile Strings are asked to wear formal uniform for the service but may change afterwards.  Fella Voce are asked to wear their regular Friday uniform, but to ensure it is clean and tidy for the performance.  Congratulations to all performers, and sincere thanks for your efforts.

We trust all families had a relaxing break over Easter. A number of students participated in a range of sport throughout the Easter holidays at National Championships. This was wonderful to see after the events of 2020 where most of these National Championships were cancelled due to COVID.

Australian Clay Court Tennis Championships

Tahlia K in Year 8 participated in the Australian Clay Court Tennis Championships. Tahlia did an exceptional job throughout the tournament not dropping a set on her way to winning the U12 title. Tahlia had to fight through every game, for every point against some of the best junior players in the country. This is a fantastic achievement and we are very proud of her efforts. Congratulations Tahlia!

Queensland School Swimming

Congratulations to the following swimmers who at the end of last term represented the College and Met West at the Queensland School Swimming Titles – Sophie S, Charlie M, Fred M, Jillian F, Israiel T, Alexa S, Bella P, Tiare R, Kaia S, Themys A-M and Jessica-Maire G. All students did a wonderful job with most students making a final in at least one event. Congratulations to Jessica-Maire and Tiare who collected a Bronze medal in their respective Backstroke events as well as Kaia and Tiare who collected Bronze Medals in their relays.

Australian Age Swimming Championships

Congratulations to all St Peters Western swimmers who competed at the Australian Age Championships of the holidays. Ella R, Claveria J-T, Tiare R and Bella P all represented the club. Overall, St Peters Western finished as the Champion Club for 2021 amassing 2836 points to win by over 1500 points.

Ella was a standout winning 6 individual Gold and 2 Silver medals as well as 4 Gold and 2 silver in relays. This was an exceptional performance by Ella and saw her selected on the Australian Junior Swim team along with 6 other students from St Peters.

Claveria also picked up 1 Gold, 2 Silver and 1 bronze in her individual events and 2 Gold and 2 Silver in Relays. Tiare and Bella both had good meets with Bella just missing the final of the 100m Backstroke by 0.01 sec. Congratulations girls!

Australian Swimming Championships

Congratulations to Mollie O and Jessica-Marie G in Year 12 who both swam at the Australian Swimming Championships last week. Both girls achieved some great results with Jessica-Maire making the finals of her Backstroke and Butterfly events to be ranked in the top 10 in Australia for her age.

Mollie also achieved some brilliant results throughout the meet. Mollie won 3 gold medals in her age group events in the 50m Freestyle, 50m Backstroke and 200m Backstroke. Impressively, Mollie also raced in 3 finals in the Open field placing 4th in the 100m Backstroke, 5th in the 100m Freestyle and 6th in 200m Freestyle against some of the best swimmers in Australia. Mollie was also selected in the Australian Junior Swim team with Ella. Mollie and Ella will also attend the Australian Olympic Swim trials in June. Well done Mollie!

Australian Athletics Championships

St Peters Springfield had a number of students representing the College and Queensland at the Australian Athletics Championships in Sydney last week. Shanteal H, Laylani Va’ai, Toby S, Aldora T, Steve L and Hayley C competed in their respective age groups with good results achieved throughout the week.

Congratulations to Toby S who won the Silver medal in the U16 High Jump with a jump of 1.71 cm and Steve L who jumped 13.16m in U15 Boys Triple Jump to claim the Bronze Medal. Aldora placed 7th in Hammer, Hayley 7th in Hammer and 8th in Discus, Shanteal placed 11th in the 3000m Steeplechase and Laylani finished 4th in the U20 Discus, 7th in Shot put and 6th overall in the U20 Heptathlon. We congratulate all these students on their success!

Welcome back to Term 2, I hope you all enjoyed a wonderful Easter with your families and managed a much needed break over the holidays.

Over the past two week many of our St Peters students participated in a variety of trainings and competitions. Fifty two of our swimmers participated in the National Age Swimming Championships down the Gold Coast, we had many of our Track & Field athletes head to Sydney for the National Track & Field Championships, we were represented at the U18 Hockey Nationals in Tasmania, our Cross Country team continued to train with amazing numbers joining the many sessions offered and our Open Basketball team continued training and playing in the Brisbane Basketball Club competition.  

As we now head into Term 2 Girls Sport, it is a good time to remind all our students and parents of the commitment that they have signed up to and agreed to participate in. Over the next fortnight, we have two consecutive long weekends where our Autumn Fixture sports (Basketball, Touch & Football) will be played on a Friday afternoon. We ask all students (and parents) who are involved in these sports to honour their commitment to play the entire season and especially on the Friday afternoon/evenings on the above-mentioned long weekends.

National Age Swimming Championships

In the first week of the holidays, 32 St Peters girls represented St Peters Western (SPW) at the National Age Swimming Championships on the Gold Coast. Overall SPW once again confirmed their position as the premier swimming program in Australia. St Peters medalled in 58 events; this amazing result was also a new record.

Jane R (Year 12) spent her holidays in Launceston, Tasmania at the U18 Hockey Nationals. After missing the first two days of the tournament due to the QLD COVID lockdown, our Queensland team were able to join the tournament and catch up games. They not only participated but were successful in winning the GOLD medal, congratulations to Jane on this outstanding achievement.

Over the next fortnight, we will experience two consecutive long weekends where AIC sport will be played on a Friday afternoon (Chess) and on Saturday (Rugby & Football). We ask all students (and parents) who are involved in any Term 2 sport to ensure that they honour their commitment to play the entirety of the AIC sporting season and especially be available on the above-mentioned long weekends.

Fin B (Year 9) who recently placed second (Silver) in the Queensland Surf Lifesaving Championships 2km Beach Run Race followed up his great performance at the National Surf Lifesaving Championships last week at Alexander Headlands, Sunshine Coast. Fin won Gold in the U14 2km Beach Race is was crowned the 2021 National Champion in this event. Well done Fin!

2021 AIC Cross Country & Runners Club

Our 2021 cross country training has well and truly underway. It was fantastic to see the large number of students attending the Easter holiday cross country training session. Many thanks to Mrs Kerry Schreiber and her coaches for their enthusiastic commitment to assist all our runners and making cross country at St Peters such an enjoyable experience.  We still welcome all boys from Years 7 to 12 to get involved in our Cross Country program or the social Runners Club.

Information regarding the St Peters Lutheran College Springfield Sport program will be communicated through a range of modes including email, St Peters App and Cornerstone. Students and parents will primarily receive information from the Head of Sport at Springfield but at times may also receive information from the Girls and Boys Sport Coordinators or individual Sport Coordinators. Parents and students are encouraged to download and use the St Peters App for information regarding the Sport program.
