During Week 4 this term, our Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 students will participate, along with one million other students across Australia, in the annual literacy and numeracy assessments.
NAPLAN is a point-in-time assessment to help parents see how their child, compared with the rest of Australia’s children, is progressing in the fundamental skills of literacy and numeracy. The information provided by NAPLAN supports parents and teachers as they work together to help children achieve their full potential.
NAPLAN data helps us support our school improvement processes by enabling us to monitor students’ progress over time against a national measure. NAPLAN data, used in combination with school-based assessments, provides us with diagnostic information that shapes our teaching programs and guides and supports our students’ learning journey.
NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy skills that students are learning through the school curriculum. These skills are continuously developed in each year level across the school and not just in the lead-up to NAPLAN. The success of this deliberate and sustained focus on the development of literacy and numeracy skills is reflected in the results achieved by our students. Our results show that our students are consistently achieving at or above the National Minimum Standard.
NAPLAN is not a test that children can prepare for in the same way they might prepare for an end-of-term test and NAPLAN test days should be treated as just another routine event on the school calendar. Teachers will ensure that students are familiar with the test formats and will provide appropriate support and guidance.
The best way you can help your child prepare for NAPLAN is to reassure them that NAPLAN tests are just one part of their school program, and to urge them to simply do the best they can on the day. Excessive preparation is not useful and can lead to unnecessary anxiety. If you have any questions about your child's preparation for NAPLAN, please speak to your child’s teacher.
Literacy and numeracy are fundamentally important for all young people; however, NAPLAN is not, and should never be, the sole measure of a child’s achievement at a school or of the success of a school. Our school curriculum has much to offer and students engage with a rich curriculum in literature, science, humanities, technology, health and physical education, languages, and the arts.
Last week, the St Peters community, paused to honour our defence forces, past and present, and remember those who had paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
On Friday, students, teachers and guests gathered on the Concourse to commemorate the landing at Gallipoli. This was followed, on Monday, with representatives from St Peters joining the wider community at Robelle Domain for the Dawn Service. Members of our Year 12 Student Leadership Team and students from Year 6 attended the service with Mrs Houston and Mrs Wise. College Captain, Joel L and Vice-Captain, Lauren J. laid a wreath on behalf of the school.

The Greatest Love Story
No movie theatre would be complete without some great love story, perhaps the latest rom-com by Richard Curtis (ever thought of a Love Actually sequel?). Many of us, whether we openly admit it, love the feel-good, hopeful assurance that love is a thing in our lives…that “love actually is all around”, if I can quote Hugh Grant from that movie (yes, Chaplain Kirstin has probably watched the movie too many times).
I’ve been thinking about stories, how they impact us and how various stories weave together into a coherent whole. I began to realise that in many ways life is very like the structure of Love Actually, with many stories weaving in and around and together. These stories finally come together and culminate in the greatest story ever told, perhaps the greatest love story ever told – not exactly a rom-com, a story in a book that’s perhaps a bit too long to make into a two hour movie.
The Bible can be called God’s story, the story of God’s relationship with all people. The story begins with God’s creation of the universe and people, and how God lives in relationship with his people. The Old Testament goes on to reveal the story of God’s relationship with his chosen people, the Israelites. God’s relationship with people is revealed as God calls the Israelites into relationship and provides them with rules for living with God and each other. The stories also reveal the nature of people as they desire for relationship with God, break this relationship and fall away from God and then in times of need return to their relationship with God. Throughout these stories God’s faithfulness, love for and forgiveness of his people remains.
The New Testament contains the story of God present in the world with people, in Jesus. In Jesus, God reveals the plan for completely restoring the broken relationship between God and people, a plan that came to fruition with the Easter resurrection. The New Testament contains the stories about Jesus and letters for Jesus’ followers who live out their relationship with God in lives of love and service.
The Bible links together the way in which God revealed himself to his people in the Old Testament, at the time of Christ, and still reveals himself today. It is the story which enabled our school to be built, and the story that continues to weave through our stories here. This is the story that impacts on the way we live here at school and impacts our spiritual lives too.

Arise is a Lutheran community that meets at St Peters, Springfield. It’s a place where you can come to know God’s love through Jesus, and find light and hope for your life, and connect with other families from St Peters and the wider community.
In our service you will hear God’s word, sing, pray and share in Holy Communion if you want to. There’s a message for the kids too.
Please be advised that there is a planned network outage next Monday 2 May from 1:00pm - 3:00pm.

As NAPLAN will commence each morning following Pastoral Care, it is important that students arrive at school on time. In the event of absence there will be catch-up sessions conducted throughout both the first and second week of the test schedule.
NAPLAN is aligned to the Australian Curriculum: English and Mathematics. Conventions of Language includes spelling, grammar and punctuation. Numeracy includes number and algebra, measurement and geometry, and chance and data. The Writing task will require students to write either a narrative or a persuasive text and we will not know what it is until the day of the Writing test. Year 3 students will complete the Writing test on paper.
In 2022, students will undertake NAPLAN using the online platform. NAPLAN Online delivers numerous benefits including:
a tailored test design that adapts to correct and incorrect student responses, providing a more precise understanding of student achievement
innovative use of technology, including a more engaging test design and a wider range of item types
the extension of the test window to two weeks, allowing schools greater opportunity to schedule the tests at times that suit them best and increasing student participation
Technical Requirements
Students in Year 3 will complete NAPLAN using the Year 3 iPads, which are owned and managed by St Peters and has the locked down browser installed.
Students in Year 5 will be using their BYOD iPad. The NAP locked down browser app must be downloaded (at no cost) from the app store. v1.8.3 Updated 7 October 2021
Students in Years 7 and 9 will use their BYOD laptop. The NAP locked down browser must be installed. Please click the links below to download the appropriate browser to install on the computer desktop.
Physical keyboard (wired or wireless) is required for laptops, and highly recommended for use with iPads
Parents, guardians and caregivers can support their children by making them feel comfortable about the purpose and nature of the tests and encouraging them to do their best. They can also assure students that the tests will give them an opportunity to show the knowledge and skills learned in class.
All students are encouraged to participate in NAPLAN tests. Students with a disability may qualify for adjustments that reflect the support normally provided in the classroom. Mrs Stephanie Wise, the Exceptional Learners teacher, will contact you if your child is eligible for special provisions for the tests.
A formal exemption may be granted for a student with a significant intellectual disability and/or significant coexisting conditions, or for a student who has recently arrived in Australia and has a non-English speaking background. Parents or carers may withdraw their child from the tests to address issues such as religious beliefs and philosophical objections to testing.

Where does the money collected from our cans and bottles go?
The cans and bottles we collect at school are donated to Down2Earth Charity. This local Ipswich charity started in 2019 when Darcy saw a need for helping the homeless people of Ipswich. The money he collects from 10c bottles and cans goes towards helping to buy food, cooking meals and going out to distribute the meals to the people on the street.
Darcy spoke to the students last week and delivered several Down2Earth bins for us to collect our cans and bottles. Darcy and his Down2Earth volunteers will collect the bins when they are full, and the money raised will go towards his charity and helping the homeless of Ipswich. Families are welcome to bring their cans and bottles to school and place them in the black Down2Earth bins.

Term 2 | Week 2
With a number of performance opportunities coming up this term, it is appropriate to take a look at the benefits of being involved in music performances. This article is a summary from Backstage Blog by Encore Tours, printed in April 2022.
Five Mental Health Benefits from Musical Performance
Most people intuitively recognise how music can positively impact our mood, energy and mental health. …. A study conducted by Laura Ferrari, a cognitive psychologist at Lion University, shows that “listening to the music you love makes your brain release more dopamine, a crucial neurotransmitter for humans’ emotional and cognitive functioning”. A different study revealed listening to classical music before bedtime leads to a significantly better quality of sleep. Other studies have identified physical and emotional benefits from music involvement; however, this article will focus on the cognitive benefits of being involved in music performance.
1. Strengthen bonds
Music brings people together and creates a feeling of cohesion or social connectivity. Joining a music ensemble can help foster relationships with like-minded people, while imparting valuable lessons about teamwork and collaboration.
2. Increase processing ability
Neuroscientists has found a direct correlation between playing an instrument and beneficial impact on fine motor skills, memory, learning, verbal and non-verbal learning. Studies have shown that musicians typically have superior working memory as compared to non-musicians.
3. Reduce stress and depression
Playing an instrument has been found to be a highly effective coping strategy and stress management tool. Playing and composing can lower cortisol levels, which can lower acute, chronic and traumatic stress.
4. Enhances focus and self-discipline
Being in a music ensemble required participants to block out distracting noises and focus for long periods of time. For this reason, musicians tend to have higher levels of mental alertness than the general population. Lutz Jancke, a Neuropsychologist at the University of Zurich, has found that “learning to play the piano … teaches (children) to be more self-disciplined, more attentive and better at planning”.
5. Improved ability to learn languages
Music and linguistics spare a neurological network. Learning music helps to develop the left side of the brain (which relates to music and reasoning). Studies have shown that children participating in music classes commonly have advanced speech development and can more easily learn to read.
ANZAC Service 2022
Three of our ensembles were highlighted in the school’s ANZAC Service, which was held on Friday 22 April.
Fella Voce, the boys choir, gave a rousing rendition of the community hymn, Kiplings Recessional. Fantastic effort, boys!
Our senior choir, Con Brio, joined forces with Cantabile Strings (senior string ensemble) to perform a special arrangement of Monique Carole-Smith’s hauntingly poignant “War Song”. Students were joined by Ms Celine Crellin (Strings tutor), Mrs Mardi Doyle (Music teacher) and Mr Peter Grennan (bass player) and conducted by Ms Sally Grennan. Ian Fraser, a representative from Goodna RSL, declared this performance was the best school performance he has witnessed since he started attending ANZAC Services in the 1970’s! Well done, students. Your attention to detail and sincerity shone through during this performance.

This year for Touch, Football & Basketball, Parents are asked to complete a Google form to advise their daughters mode of transport. This forms also acts as a permission form and creates an accurate roll for us to manage bus numbers. Parents, please keep an eye out for this form and complete in a timely manner each away round.
Last Friday our Round 4 results were mixed, some great wins, some teams were hurt badly by COVID protocols and injuries but when the girls hit the courts, they did themselves proud. Our Open team, for FOCUS Round had amazing support in the stands and were impressive against a much-improved BGGS team. Senior A, their first game of the season and Coach Stephen just got them across the line in a close one. Senior B1 were missing many players, they got the W, Coach Matt says they have work to do! 10A in a shortened game due to BGGS arriving late with bus issues got over the line by 2, great work girls & Coach Orhan. 10B battled hard against a strong BGGS team, 9A, disappointing as they had only 5 players with Ironbark, sickness and injury, they would have won this game by 20 with their full team. 9B were disappointing with many girls missing unexplained, we hope this does not happen again, the four girls (& thanks Madi for filling in) that did play were amazing and they went down by 1! 8A got up by four in a close one, we are excited for this team, 8B did great, these girls are awesome, their attendance at training is fantastic! 7A, we are also excited for this team, they had a good win and our 7B White girls try hard, most have never played before. We must mention Georgia B & Emily McK for their amazing spirit in the 7B team.
Good luck Girls for Round 5 v Somerville House.
Round 4 Results

Round 4 saw St Peters take on BGGS in some action-packed matches last Friday evening. The Junior A squad put up a big fight against a very tough opponent, going down 0-2. A special shoutout goes to Lily D who has shown tremendous leadership by maintaining a positive mindset and giving a huge effort right until the final whistle. St Peters Intermediate team had a 2-0 victory and looked very sharp maintaining possession for a large portion of the game. The Senior A team came away with a convincing 5-0 victory and looked very dominant throughout. A great effort by Charlotte and Caitlin who both put away two goals each. The Senior B team had a 2-1 win and have shown huge improvement across the board. The Open girls were missing a number of players due to injury and unforeseen circumstances and unfortunately went down 2-4. A huge well done to April F for stepping into the squad and demonstrating that she can have a big impact with the Open’s girls. Well done to all teams!
Good luck Girls for Round 5 v Somerville House.
Please CLICK HERE for details of the Round 5 Draw v Somerville House for this Friday afternoon – The draw can also be found on the St Peters App.
Not to be outdone, Round 4 provided myriad challenges to navigate. On behalf of the Touch Football program, we would like to thank Mrs Champion for spending copious hours finding us playing fields and Mr Martin and Mr Lohe for marking the fields with cones so that we could play. A Public Holiday, Pupil Free Day, COVID-19, other illnesses, injury, rescheduled representative training, tuition, special events and delayed returns to school combined to deplete our teams and coaching stocks, and yet, thanks to the outstanding commitment and character of our girls and coaches we managed to field teams for every game. A special thank you to Aidan McGuire and Eddie Downing-Brown for coaching several teams throughout the week and on Friday. As the final hooter sounded on Friday evening, only our Senior Bs needed to forfeit their game because they used players that had already played in other teams, yet another example of what outstanding young women we have in our Touch program. Thank you to those players, many of whom were boarders, as well as Imogen J and Paige F who played a one-off game to ensure we could field our Senior B team.
Congratulations to our Senior As, 9As, 8As and 7Bs on terrific wins. Special mention must also be made of our 10As who managed a 2 all draw, despite having only 7 players (six players are on the field at one time) for the entire game; an inspiring effort.
As we will now be playing all our games offsite, can Mrs Byrne and I ask that Parents/Caregivers complete the Google Form (the link is provided in our weekly email) so that we have accurate rolls, allowing us to efficiently load buses and leave the campus on time? The Form is required to be completed by ALL students, even boarders, and students that can’t play that week. We apologise that the email was late last week; we will seek to distribute it much earlier this week. Again, can students email either Miss George or Mrs Byrne if they will be absent from training and/or games? Thank you to all girls that have been diligent in this regard.
Please CLICK HERE for details of the Round 5 FOCUS ROUND Draw v Somerville House for this Friday afternoon – The draw can also be found on the St Peters App.
