I sat, quietly breathing in the crisp autumn air, listening to the birdsong herald a new day. The last shreds of night retreated before the brightness of the rising sun and I glanced at the two young people sitting beside me their faces infused with the hope, optimism, and innocence of youth.

Then I watched the images of young men, many similar in age to the students next to me, march across the large outdoor screen. Strong, healthy bodies contorted into the shapes of abrupt, brutal deaths, strapping young soldiers crouching, exhausted, in roughly-hewn dugouts and stoic men leaning against the metal machines of war, waiting for the next storm of destruction to descend.

As the magpies commenced their joyful morning chorus and the honied scent of early blooming wattle whispered the promise of another glorious autumn day, my thoughts, like so many of those around me, turned to the sacrifices made by the adventurous young men from our families who marched so gallantly to war.

In my family the list was long: William and Angus the brothers who died together in the bloodbath that was Gallipoli, Alfred, the young farmer whose skill with horses led him to the Western front with the AIF, Harold, the young pastor who traded the green pastures of an English village for the mud-filled trenches of Flanders, Roy who fought in the skies above England during the Battle of Britain, Richard a prisoner of war in Northern Africa and John who survived the torpedoing of his ship in the Pacific.

Not for the first time, I wondered if the sacrifices they made, the death and inhumanity they witnessed, the wounds, mental and physical, that remained unhealed was a price too high. My head might say it was, but my heart said differently.

Sitting beside our College Captains, I saw young people who knew only peace, security, and the importance of a ‘fair go’ for all, young people able to look to the future with confidence and excitement.

The Australia we live in, the values and attitudes embedded in our collective psyche are the legacy of these courageous men and women who fought on foreign soils to protect our freedoms. Their efforts were not in vain. It is because of them that our students can live vibrant and purposeful lives and this is why it was a privilege to stand with our Captains on Anzac Day giving thanks for the future they have because of the sacrifices of the past.

Have you ever checked to see if you share a birthday with anyone famous?  It’s birthday season at our place, so I did this recently.  And I was disappointed.  No world leaders, no celebrities, no royal figures share my birthday.  Supposedly the most important figure born on my birthday is Alfonso XIII of Spain (b. 1886).  Impressed?  Me either.  No offence meant, Alfonso. 

But then I discovered Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson is born in the same month and year as I was, just a few days earlier.  Being a similar age makes for an interesting point of comparison.  He is a former pro-wrestler, now actor and producer.  I’m a Pastor and Chaplain.  He’s 6 foot 5 inches tall and a mountain of muscle.  I’m … not.  His net worth is said to be in excess of $400 million.  I’ve got a mortgage.  He voices the character Maui in Disney’s Moana, who sings in 'You’re Welcome' the words, “Not bad for an ordinary demi-guy” – more than an allusion to his own success.  I’m more a plain ordinary guy.    

When we start comparing ourselves to others we invariably diminish ourselves.  We can see other people’s success or abilities or attributes and be jealous of them, or resent them, or feel inadequate with who we are.  That’s not what God wants for us.  If I compare myself to The Rock I can feel a little underwhelmed.  What have I done with my life?  Where’s my $400 million and bulging pecks?  Why am I so ordinary?

The Psalm writer knew the preciousness of knowing our uniqueness as God’s creations: 

“You created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.  I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”  Psalm 139:13-14. 

There’s nothing ordinary here!  When we realise God’s works are wonderful and that we are each one of his works, then we understand the wonder of our beings.  Having been made in God’s image, having been redeemed by Jesus, having been gifted by the Holy Spirit, we are created to be a blessing to other people and to this world.  And this, in a way no one else can be!

Each one of us is unique.  Each one of us is wonderful.  While we are comparing ourselves to others we miss out on living in this uniqueness and wonder.  The reality is we have no need to compare ourselves with others, or to be disappointed with who we are or what our lives are like.  We are fearfully and wonderfully made, and God’s works are wonderful.  God bless you as you embrace who God created you to be.

On the mornings of Tuesday 11 to Thursday 13 May, Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 students will be involved in National Testing for literacy and numeracy as part of the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN).

On Tuesday 11 May, students will complete the Language Conventions Test and the Writing Test.  Reading skills will be tested on Wednesday 12 May with Numeracy skills being tested on Thursday 13 May. The timetable for NAPLAN is below.

Language Conventions includes spelling, grammar and punctuation. Numeracy includes number, space, algebra, function and pattern, measurement, chance and data. Years 3 and 5 students are not permitted to use a calculator for the Numeracy test, however Years 7 and 9 students will complete both calculator and non-calculator elements.

NAPLAN is aligned to the Australian Curriculum: English and the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics. Questions are multiple choice or require a short written response. This year, the Writing task will require students to write either a narrative or a persuasive text. This will be evident from the stimulus they are given and we will not know what it is until the day of the Writing test. There will be one Writing prompt for students in Years 3 and 5, and a second, different prompt for students in Years 7 and 9.

National Testing provides information on how students are developing in the specified areas in relation to national benchmarks.  The tests also useful provide useful information which assists in improving teaching and learning.

Teachers will expose students to similar test formats and question types through an integrated approach in the lead-up to national testing.  NAPLAN tests are one aspect of the school’s assessment and reporting process, and do not replace the extensive, school-based assessments of student performance.

Parents, guardians and caregivers can support their children by making them feel comfortable about the purpose and nature of the tests and encouraging them to do their best.  They can also assure students that the tests will give them an opportunity to show the knowledge and skills learned in class.

All students are encouraged to participate in NAPLAN tests. Students with a disability may qualify for adjustments that reflect the support normally provided in the classroom. Mrs Stephanie Wise, the Exceptional Learners teacher, will contact you if your child is eligible for special provisions for the tests.

A formal exemption may be granted for a student with significant intellectual disability and/or significant coexisting conditions, or for a student who has recently arrived in Australia and has a non-English speaking background. Parents or carers may withdraw their child from the tests to address issues such as religious beliefs and philosophical objections to testing.

Good morning school communities

With Term 2 commencing today, QPS Ipswich District Crime Prevention in support of Department of Transport and Main Roads, are raising awareness of road safety around school zones.

Unfortunately our incident and fatality rate have not slowed down during this time, and with school resuming today what better way to remind us all to slow down than a message from the Australian Road Safety Foundation. 

They have teamed up with Spotify to create a cut-through message that alerts drivers within 5km of a school zone. This is so great to see that Road Safety is reaching new platforms to educate all drivers.

It was wonderful this year to gather to commemorate ANZAC Day. During our service on the 23rd of April, we had the pleasure of listening to an address from Wing Commander Julie Canterbury who is the Manager of the KC-30 Air to Air Refuelling Sustainment Unit at Amberley airbase. Wing Commander Canterbury spoke of her career in the Air Force and how they have supported her in gaining a higher education while working and juggling being a single Mum. In 1999 she had the opportunity to visit Anzac Cove for the dawn service and found being at the site a real inspiration and gave her a deeper understanding of what the ANZAC’s experienced in World War 1.

Con Brio and the Cantabile strings along with Sally Grennan gave a fantastic performance of the ‘Spirit of the Anzacs’. Thanks to all our invited guests who attended and helped us remember the Anzacs.

The second-hand uniform shop is run by Community Hub from the P&F centre (Indooroopilly Campus, opposite the 50m pool ) every Thursday during Term from 7:45am until 11:30am. 

All Springfield families are welcome to attend the Second-hand uniform shop as well as participate with Community Hub activities. Come along just for a coffee and chat or to also help with their various community projects.

Organic compounds, made mainly of carbon and hydrogen atoms, exhibit an enormous range of properties, which allow chemists to develop materials for applications as diverse as fuels like octane, plastics, detergents, dyes, paints, medicines, perfumes and insecticides. Organic compounds also form the basis of every cell in all living organisms. Inorganic compounds can also be modelled.

The class has been exploring the world of organic and inorganic molecules using modelling kits. Each element has a particular colour, for example, all carbon atoms are black, hydrogens are white, chlorines are green and oxygen s are red. As hydrogen is smaller than carbon the model molecule is smaller in size.

As the molecules are three dimensional, it is difficult to see the shape if the molecule is depicted on a flat surface like paper. Seeing the 3D shape helps students realise that the molecules are zig-zag in their length. Where the molecule is reactive i.e. its functional group is also easier to see.

Inorganic molecules like water were also made. Water is seen to have a bent shape. The types of bonds in molecules can be shown such as single bonds in butane, double bonds in oxygen and triple bonds in nitrogen.

Year 5 had their first visit to Prep and commenced Prep Buddies. The students were very excited and enjoyed getting to know the Prep students. Year 5 assisted their buddy with an Easter activity and finished with a song and dance. This is a really important way to build relationships within the school and help the older students to demonstrate how to be a good role model. This will also provide them with leadership skills in preparation for Year 6.

Our music ensembles provided featured items during the school’s ANZAC Service held last Friday.  Con Brio and Cantabile Strings, joined by Ryan Z (percussionist) gave a stirring rendition of “Spirit of the ANZACS”.  This song has been recorded by Lee Kernaghan and others, and was co-written by Colin Buchanan, who composed many of the songs students sing during chapel services.  The performance began with an excerpt of “The Last Post”, performed masterfully by Joshua C on cello. Students were joined by fellow musicians, Ms Alison Pomerenke, Ms Celine Crellin and Mr Peter Grennan.  Thanks and congratulations to all performers for a heart-felt and committed performance.

Our boys choir, Fella Voce, also made their debut at this service, leading the hymn and the anthems.  Singing on the Concourse is a very different experience from singing in our rehearsal space, and the boys adapted.  Every performance became more secure, and boys are to be congratulated on their efforts.

Year 4 – 12 Inter-House Cross Country

Congratulations to all students who participated in the year 4 – 12 Inter-House Cross Country carnival. This year's slightly different format saw students run as many laps as possible in an allotted time. It was great to see so many students in St Peters House shirts out there giving it a go!

Our overall winners in Primary were Cunningham with Leichardt taking out the Secondary carnival. Cunningham and Leichhardt also took out House Spirit for Primary and Secondary respectively.

What a great way to start Term 2 with Basketball, Football and Touch fixtures continuing with some amazing results against Somerville House last Friday afternoon/evening. Our Open Football & Touch recorded convincing wins and our Open Basketball team finished the night tied after an eventful game. Pre-season Rowing is underway, and it was great to see Rhythmic Gymnastics back on the floor after a year off last year.

Our rescheduled Senior School Inter-House Cross Country has been run over the last two days. It was fantastic to see all our Years 10-12 students having a go and enjoying themselves while running for their House. A big thank you to all our staff for ensuring that the 2021 Inter-House Cross Country went ahead for our students.

REMINDER – due to the Public Holiday on Monday, there will be no Girls Sport training sessions on this day.

Round 4 Wrap

It was another successful weekend for our Girls Basketball program. With home court advantage, our girls provided effort and energy on both Stolz and our Indoor Court. The 7B girls continued to impress, winning by 15 points (30-15). The girls demonstrated consistency on offence when it mattered the most! Our 8A girls dominated for four quarters, resulting in a 68-12 score.  It was only fitting that the Oscars took place this weekend; as much drama occurred in our Open Girls game on Friday night. It had everything you can imagine in a Basketball game with many highs and lows throughout the contest. Toby S started the girls off with some great steals and lay ups. Aldora T was hot from the outside, making three 3-pointers, including one to put the Saints up by 16 points in the second quarter. The second half of the game could be described as an intense rollercoaster ride; full of up and downs until the end! Somerville House played well in the third quarter, jumping out to a 17-0 scoring run pulling within three points with 40 seconds remaining in the game. Some late surprising calls from the officials made it difficult for the girls to persevere in the final stretch of the game. A late turnover by the Saints, allowed Somerville to gain possession with eight seconds left in the game. The Somerville House point guard was able to shoot and make a three pointer with no time remaining on the game clock. Final score: 34-34. A tough one for both Coach Mike and our Open Girls. When asked about the officiating and outcome of the game Coach Mike said, “It should not have come to the last shot, we had a lot of calls that didn’t go our way tonight and I felt for our girls”.

The Saints hit the court for an away game this Friday against Brisbane State High School.

Round 4 Wrap

This week proved to be another successful round for St Peters Football as we took on Somerville House, with fantastic results from the girls. The Junior team was out for revenge after going down in a trial match, managing to pull off a 5-4 victory in the round that counts. The Intermediate girls showed excellent teamwork in coming up with a 6-0 victory while missing their goalkeeper for the round. The Seniors ran away with a 5-3 win showing lots of heart throughout a tough match. The Open girls proved that they continue to develop and gel as a team as they finished with a 12-0 victory. Next week St Peters will take on BSHS which should prove to be an excellent hit out!

What a great round of Touch Football! Our teams travelled to UQ for the first of our home games to be played off site. With eight wins, one draw and one loss, the improvement in our teams is fantastic. We look forward to the second half of the season to continue to develop and we must give a special mention to our amazing Year 7 girls, their attendance at training, games and on Fridays afternoon’s is impressive 😊

CROSS COUNTRY

Thank you to all the girls who participated in the last two QGSSSA Cross Country warm up meets, the numbers have been amazing. Congratulations to Ava K (Year 7) who place second, Ella K (Year 9) third, and Gabby S (Year 10) first at the BGGS meet last Tuesday afternoon. Well done girls and we look forward to your continued success in the final two weeks of the 2021 season.

Next Tuesday 4 May is our final and compulsory Rivermount Cross Country Warm Up Meet (this meet is very important as it gives the girls the opportunity to run the course of the QGSSSA Championships). This compulsory meet is the final meet of the season and extremely important for the girls to attend, please arrange to miss any other commitments on this afternoon. Buses will leave the St Peters Bus Stop at 2.30pm and leave Rivermount College (Yatala) at approximately 5.30pm to return to school. Any girls who cannot attend this meet but wishes to be considered for the QGSSSA team must email Mrs Schreiber ASAP. The 2021 QGSSSA Cross Country team will be selected based on times run at this meet.

Finally, the big day of competition for the 2021 QGSSSA Cross Country season is Saturday 15 May. For those girls new to Cross Country, buses will leave the St Peters Bus Stop at 6.30am to take the girls to Rivermount College, Yatala, it is important the girls travel together to the event as part of the team. Parents can take girls home after their race or buses will return to school at the completion of the competition, approx. 1.00pm. The QGSSSA Cross Country Championships are always a fun filled morning where every member of the team supports each other in running 3km. Please support our runners by being part of 2021 QGSSSA Cross Country, we look forward to seeing you run.

Congratulations to all the Rowing Girls on making it to Week 2 of the pre-season!

It has been fantastic to see the girls on the water each morning and afternoon and from all reports from the coaches, the girls that have been at training sessions have been improving significantly.  I would like to pay particular congratulations to the Years Eight Rowers, the improvements that the coaches have seen have been significant, and over a very short period of time.

We are still looking for two girls in the Years 8, 9 & 10 age groups, to ensure that each girl has a crew to race in at the regattas next term.  It is not too late to sign up!  Please reach out to Mr Hicks in Sports House or email p.hicks@stpeters.qld.edu.au if you would like to give Rowing a go.

RHYTHMIC GYMNASTICS

Yesterday we saw the girls start their Rhythmic Gymnastics training for the term.

The girls worked hard on their body work and apparatus skills using hoops and balls. It was great to see everyone super keen and enthusiastic.

Don’t forget training is held every Wednesday afternoon in the Gym from 3:30pm.

If there are any Year 9 girls that may still be interested, please email me directly. It’s not too late, we would love to see you!

Following last weekend’s very successful trial games against St Edmund’s College, St Peters Boys Sport is getting ready for Round 1 of our Term 2 sports of Rugby, Football and Chess. Our boys have been training and preparing throughout Term 1 and over the Easter holiday period for the commencement of their respective sport. We are now eager to kick off our Term 2 fixtures against Padua College.

This week we also had the opportunity to conduct our Senior School Inter-House Cross Country which was initially scheduled to be held in Term 1. Due to the COVID lock down it was postponed.

It was fantastic to see all our Years 10, 11 and 12 students getting out and having a go and enjoying themselves with their peers whilst participating for their respective St Peters House group. Thank you to all the St Peters staff who gave up their time to ensure that the 2021 St Peters Inter-House Cross Country went ahead for our students.

AIC Chess Round 1 Games Friday 30 April

This Friday, St Peters Chess will play Padua College in their first fixture of the 2021 AIC Chess season. All games this Friday will be played ‘away’ at Padua College from 4.00pm onwards.

2021 AIC Cross Country & Runners Club

The 2021 AIC Championships win be held on Wednesday 2 June at Curlew Park, Sandgate. As our training will now start to fully focus on these championships with just over 4 weeks left to prepare. We do ask that all boys who wish to be included in the 2021 St Peters Cross Country Team for these championships to ensure they are committed to attending training and any lead up races or events which we will be conducting.

We still welcome all boys from Years 7 to 12 boys to get involved in our Cross Country program or the social Runners Club.

The Boys Rowing Program completed in their first Regatta last weekend with a number of fantastic results achieved.

It is in reverse when SPLC appears second. This may change at times dependent on circumstances

Information regarding the St Peters Lutheran College Springfield Sport program will be communicated through a range of modes including email, St Peters App and Cornerstone. Students and parents will primarily receive information from the Head of Sport at Springfield but at times may also receive information from the Girls and Boys Sport Coordinators or individual Sport Coordinators. Parents and students are encouraged to download and use the St Peters App for information regarding the Sport program.

*Please ensure that you update your preferences in the Settings> Subscriptions section of the app so that you only receive information from your appointed Campus or area of interest that are relevant to your family e.g. Springfield or Sports.
