Over the course of their secondary school journey, our Secondary Years students’ progress through a carefully crafted leadership program that aligns with their developmental stage and interests. This program is designed to foster the key practices of exemplary leadership identified by Kouzes and Posner: Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, Challenge the Process, Enable Others to Act, and Encourage the Heart.

In Year 7, students embark on "Discovering Myself," a phase that encourages exploration, curiosity, and engagement through class discussions, camps, peer support, and involvement in our diverse range of sports, activities, student portfolios or interest groups.

Year 8 is dedicated to "Building Connections," where students begin to actively participate in a chosen portfolio, strengthening their sense of belonging and identifying their passions.

The transformative "Ironbark & Stepping Up" program in Year 9 challenges students to reflect on their leadership experiences, take on minor roles within their Year Level and portfolios, and mentor younger peers, fostering personal growth and practical application of leadership principles.

As students’ progress into Years 10 and 11, they "Refine Their Skills" and "Expand Their Horizons" by beginning to organise events, leading projects, and representing their portfolios in inter-school or community initiatives, mentoring Primary Years students, developing essential skills in collaboration, planning, and stakeholder engagement.

Finally, in Year 12, our senior students "Lead Their Legacy" by assuming formal leadership positions, guiding their peers, mentoring younger students, and spearheading transformative changes within their portfolios, leaving a lasting positive impact on our school's culture and portfolio programs.

At each stage, our students experience the excitement of discovery, the pride of contribution, the challenge of responsibility, and the joy of empowering others – all hallmarks of effective leadership.

On Saturday 11 May, the St Peters community has a unique chance to witness Dean Boxall and his elite high-performance squad's final training session before they depart for the 2024 Paris Olympics swimming trials.

This exclusive opportunity grants access to the usually off-limits St Peters Aquatic Centre, where spectators can observe the squad, including international swimming stars like Ariarne Titmus, Mollie O'Callaghan, Elijah Winnington, Shayna Jack, Brianna Throssell, Jack Cartwright, Kiah Melverton, Abbey Harkin, Jenna Forrester and St Peters Year 12 student Jaclyn B, as they undergo intense race simulation training.

Although you won't have the chance to meet the swimmers or take photos, due to their focus on training, you'll be right in the midst of the action, experiencing the energy and atmosphere of Olympic-level competition.

Gates open at 6:00am sharp, and spectators must be seated by 6:25am to catch the 6:30am start of the session, which will last approximately 2 hours. Don't miss this opportunity to be part of the excitement!

Imagine what would happen if I threw a pebble into a pond. It’s going to create a splash, and then a ripple. If you were to use that pebble in a sling-shot or to throw it at someone, you would hurt them.

The same stones can also be used to build walls – barriers between people, or perhaps more positively, retaining walls which help use land more effectively. They can be used to make beautiful mosaics that all can enjoy, they can be skipped across water in times of leisure, used as a garden mulch to retain water in the soil, or to make a path…the uses of the stones are endless.

But ultimately, it is the way we choose to use the ‘rocks and pebbles’ at our disposal that make a difference in the ripples we create. How we can we use those gifts, those messages at our disposal to work with and positively influence those around us?

This is a message that Jesus preached in his time on earth. Sometimes when the time was appropriate, he would cause a stir, throw a great big rock into the pond of complacency to stir things up. But more often he spoke words of comfort and peace to those needing such a message. Jesus told us that he would be a rock, a refuge, a strong place in times of trouble.

And as I look around at the world today, I see disasters, I see divisions, I see fighting and people who can’t agree. I see people who are confused, troubled. I see faiths that have trouble finding common ground. What is the message that our world, that our school even, needs to hear?

This is a question that we are forced to ask in our school… What message does Christ give us who are living in this world, in this school, Christians and non Christians alike? What is the core of the gospel message - what is the message that unites, opens dialogue and soothes the violent ripples?

It is summed up in a well known text – That by God’s ‘grace we have been saved, through faith’. God loves his creation, each one of us so much, that Jesus came into the world, to spread the word of God’s forgiveness, to die for the sins of the world. He came to bring peace, with God and with each other. He tells us that God can indeed be a refuge and strength for us.

Renowned Christian Kid’s Presenter Dan Warlow is coming back to St Peters, Springfield! Following a hugely popular visit in 2023, Dan will return with a collection of new songs and trusty buddy Jed to lead presentations to our Primary students. Dan’s music and message teaches children about God’s love and how to follow Jesus.

A glorious morning greeted us last Wednesday as the St Peters Lutheran College community gathered on the concourse to remember the sacrifice of our service personnel at our ANZAC Service.

Chaplain Steve Turnbull, Deputy Director Chaplaincy Air Command, shared a moving story of service and sacrifice about an ordinary soldier, Victor Turnbull, his great-uncle, who gave his life in the First World War. Moving renditions of the Last Post and the Rouse were played by Mr Brendan Johns (Head of Sport) and Georgia B (Year 8). Our Choirs led us in song and performed the poignant piece `400 Seasons’ by Stuart Gillard. Student representatives laid wreaths at our ANZAC Memorial.

The event was enriched by the presence of many past and present service personnel. The College acknowledges with gratitude all who serve our country, and recognises the sacrifices made by all service men and women and their families.

Special thanks are due to Mrs Stephanie Wise for organising the service.

We are excited to share that for the first time, St Peters Lutheran College is participating in the prestigious QUT BlueShift Business Case Competition. This initiative offers an exceptional opportunity for our students to engage in real-world business challenges, demonstrating their skills and preparing for future careers in business and entrepreneurship.

This year, our participation involves two teams, each made up of four talented students from our secondary school Years 10-12. These students have taken on the challenge to develop innovative business strategies for Origin Tea, a company intent on making tea a preferred choice among younger generations. This task provides a unique platform for our students to apply their classroom learning in a practical and competitive environment.

Under the mentorship of Business Teachers, Miss Natasha Banks and Mr Joel Sheppard, our students are not only learning how to create effective business presentations but are also developing essential skills in research, strategic thinking, and collaborative teamwork. These skills are critical in today’s dynamic business world and will equip our students with the confidence and knowledge to thrive in their future endeavours.

The process of preparing for the competition has allowed our students to delve into the complexities of market analysis, consumer behaviour, and digital marketing strategies. They have explored innovative ways to engage potential customers, particularly Millennials and Generation Z, through social media campaigns, influencer partnerships, and sustainability initiatives.

Last week our teams submitted their final pitch decks, and we excitedly await the outcome. This competition is more than just a contest; it's a stepping stone for our students to real-world applications, offering insights into the responsibilities and challenges of managing a business. As well as opening up many further opportunities and potential for scholarship prizes at QUT of $2,000 per participating student.

We are proud of the dedication and creativity shown by our students and are eager to see how their ideas will be received. Regardless of the outcome, the experience gained through the QUT BlueShift competition is invaluable and reflects our commitment to providing students with opportunities to learn, grow, and succeed.

We look forward to offering this opportunity again next year.

Strings Concerts

Thanks to Ms Crellin, Pizzicato and selected Allegro Strings members and soloists who performed at the first Primary Years Strings Lunchtime Concert this week. Hearing beautiful music played on the Concourse during break times lifts the spirits and is a reminder about the power of music. Next Friday members of Cantabile Strings will play during the Mother’s Day Breakfast. Thanks to the staff who will have supported these events to provide valuable performing experience.

Timothy Sherlock Vocal Workshop

Dolce Voce are looking forward to being involved in a vocal workshop with leading Brisbane Composer, Choral Conductor, Educator and Handbell Director, Timothy Sherlock on Wednesday 8 May. Timothy will workshop the Ipswich Eisteddfod repertoire and impart his vocal and adjudicator expertise to our young choristers and music staff. Thanks to Mrs Schmeider for organising this wonderful learning opportunity.

Semester 1 Recitals

WDNA SFD

Well done to the WDNA SFD teams who have now played two rounds of Netball. SFD’s U12 team has two excellent wins, winning 29-1 and 34-0! The U11 team has also had two great wins, winning 18-3 and 13-1. While the U9 team has had one win (5-2) on Saturday after having to forfeit the Round 1 fixture. SWIMMING

Our SFD swimmers have had a couple busy months with QRSS trials and the 2024 Australian Age & MC Championships being held. Congratulations to all our swimmers, here are some stand out results.

Congratulations

• Olivia G (Year 8) placed 1st in the U14 400m, 800m & 1500m Freestyle. Olivia’s time’s in these three events has qualified her to trial at the Australian Olympic trials being held in July at the Brisbane Aquatic Centre.
• Dominique M (Year 12) placed 2nd in the U17 1500m and 3rd in the 800m.
• Lachlan S placed 3rd in the U14 50m Backstroke.
  At the end of Term 1, St Peters Springfield students competing for Met West at the QRSS trials to qualify for the QLD Team. Congratulations to the following students who will swim for QLD at the National Championships in July.
• Amayah H (Year 7), Jocelyn M (Year 8), Judy Y (Year 10), Lachlan S (Year 10) and Ethan S (Year 7).

ATHLETICS

St Peters SFD has also had many students competing in Track & Field at National Championships. With the Australian Junior Track & Field Championships and Australian Little Athletics Championships being in Adelaide recently.

• Addison F (Year 9) who won the 200m Hurdles at the Junior Championships as well the 90m, 300m Hurdles and Long Jump at the Little Athletics Championships.
• Hayden W (Year 11) won the 400m, 800m and 1500m U17 MC races.
• Mia K (Year 9) won the 200m, Shot Put and Javelin U15 MC events at the Junior Championships as well placing 2nd in the 200m, 2nd in Discus, 2nd in 400m and 2nd in 100m at the Little Athletics Championships.
• Jenali B (Year 10) won the U16 Discus event at the National Junior Championships and was appointed captain of the U15 team for QLD at the Little Athletics Championships where Jenali won both Shot Put and Discus.
• Allira T (Year 12) not only won the U18 Shot Put by over 2m but set a new record for that event with a 17.27m throw.
• Diva E (Year 8) placed 2nd in the U14 High Jump.
• Emily B (Year 7), Indiana P (Year 10) and Hayley C (Year 12) who competed and still performed very well at the Australian Junior Championships.

Boys Weekly Sport

With Round 1 of AIC sport kicking off last weekend it was fantastic to start the season off with a home round. Chess had St Peters underway on Friday night with Thiele House providing the stage for some impressive opening victories for our young men. With both Senior Football and all Rugby teams at home, St Peters was the place to be whether you were supporting from Stolz or making the noise at Mayer, the sense of community and sporting prowess that was shown was admirable.

Our First IV Chess team started the season with a comprehensive victory winning seven from right matches across the night. Despite the scoreline, the boys showed grit and determination in the endgame to ensure a stalemate wasn’t an option or they were timed out, with a tense few matches going tot the wire.

Rugby featured five matches on Mayer Oval on Saturday, with all teams playing at home for the first time this season. Notable performances from our Years 7 and 9 teams recording victories with some impressive patterns of play and individual skill to score several tries. Our First XV faced a dogged St Edmund’s side, with both teams trading early tries, but were unable to break a discipline defence late in the game to record a victory. Next weekend, all teams will be back home again, let’s fill the hill and get behind the boys.

Football was spread across four venues and recorded victories in more than half their games. Our First XI faced a difficult opening match vs St Edmund’s College, but despite dominating for large portions of the match and hitting the post twice, St Peters went down to a well-drilled side. We now turn our attention to St Laurence’s College this Saturday.

Kai G, Year 11, for being selected into the World Youth Lifesaving team. As one of six boys Kai will represent Australia, the competition will be held in late August/early September.

Tom S, Year 9, over the holidays won U15 Nationals for Javelin, recording a distance of 46.47m. Tom retained his medal after winning the event last year too.

Chess news – FOCUS ROUND

A massive home fixture for the Chess program in Round 2. In what shapes to be a crucial clash in the hope of a premiership. We need your support on Friday afternoon straight after school at 3:30pm outside the CLI building for the Chess Focus Round.

First Team Presentation

Leading into Round 1 of AIC we announced our St Peters 1st IV Chess, 1st XI Football, and our 1st XV Rugby Team on Wednesday night. It was a combined gathering where we were able to acknowledge and congratulate the selected members of each respective team.

Mr Tim Kotzur, Mrs Lisa Delaney and Miss Sarah Delaney attended to address and present the players with their playing shirts and badges. It filled me with great honour to see the young men take pride in their uniform and to ‘play for the crest’ with many students being teammates for several years and discussions of brotherhood were many.

We do encourage all students and parents to support to our Chess, Football and Rugby players as well as St Peters Cross Country runners over the course of their respective sporting seasons. A large part of our St Peters sporting program is also community engagement. Sport at St Peters is a great environment to connect and socialise with other students and parents.

A reminder that all St Peters boys do need to be dressed correctly at both AIC training and at AIC games. All uniforms can be purchased from Shop45 or via School locker, please refer to website for opening hours. For matchdays, enclosed footwear must be worn to games, no slides or crocs are to be worn at St Peters or associated AIC schools.

The St Peters Mother Daughter High Tea is a Sunday afternoon of delicious food, great company and inspirational conversation.

Tickets include traditional high tea fare, a glass of champagne on arrival (adults only) and bottomless tea and coffee. We will also raffle off some luxury jewellery. A cash bar will be available. We encourage families from both Springfield and Indooroopilly to join us. Get in quick before tickets sell out!

Our Guest speaker, Kaylee Neil attended St Peters Lutheran College Springfield from its founding year in 2008 until her graduation as College Captain in 2019. During her time at St Peters, Kaylee was heavily involved in debating and mooting programs and travelled to New Caledonia and France on language exchange as well as Central Australia on the Indigenous Immersion Tour.

In late 2023, Kaylee was selected as the Menzies Foundation Scholar for the UN Commission on the Status of Women by Global Voices, a youth-led, not-for-profit organisation aiming to upskill and develop the next generation of Australian Leaders in domestic and global decision-making. In addition to her involvement with Global Voices, Kaylee is a paralegal at a specialist Family Law firm in Brisbane and has volunteer experience with organisations such as the Australian Pro Bono Centre and Young Australians in International Affairs. Kaylee has always had a strong interest in international diplomacy and was previously selected to attend UN Youth Australia's annual American Political Tour in 2020.

All proceeds from the 2024 Mother Daughter High Tea will be donated to charity. We hope to see you there.
