Student Leadership in Secondary Years
At St Peters, we believe that leadership is not just a role or title, but a skillset that can be nurtured and developed from a young age. Our approach to student leadership is inspired by the renowned work of James M. Kouzes and Barry Posner, renowned experts in the field of leadership development.
Over the course of their secondary school journey, our Secondary Years students’ progress through a carefully crafted leadership program that aligns with their developmental stage and interests. This program is designed to foster the key practices of exemplary leadership identified by Kouzes and Posner: Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, Challenge the Process, Enable Others to Act, and Encourage the Heart.
In Year 7, students embark on "Discovering Myself," a phase that encourages exploration, curiosity, and engagement through class discussions, camps, peer support, and involvement in our diverse range of sports, activities, student portfolios or interest groups.
Year 8 is dedicated to "Building Connections," where students begin to actively participate in a chosen portfolio, strengthening their sense of belonging and identifying their passions.
The transformative "Ironbark & Stepping Up" program in Year 9 challenges students to reflect on their leadership experiences, take on minor roles within their Year Level and portfolios, and mentor younger peers, fostering personal growth and practical application of leadership principles.
As students’ progress into Years 10 and 11, they "Refine Their Skills" and "Expand Their Horizons" by beginning to organise events, leading projects, and representing their portfolios in inter-school or community initiatives, mentoring Primary Years students, developing essential skills in collaboration, planning, and stakeholder engagement.
Finally, in Year 12, our senior students "Lead Their Legacy" by assuming formal leadership positions, guiding their peers, mentoring younger students, and spearheading transformative changes within their portfolios, leaving a lasting positive impact on our school's culture and portfolio programs.
At each stage, our students experience the excitement of discovery, the pride of contribution, the challenge of responsibility, and the joy of empowering others – all hallmarks of effective leadership.
We are proud of our comprehensive leadership program and its alignment with the renowned practices of Kouzes and Posner. By fostering these critical leadership skills from an early age, we equip our students to positively shape those around them, capable of creating positive change in their communities and the world beyond.
