We were delighted to start our Thriving Thursday program last week for our Year 4-6 students. From feedback Week 1 was a huge success and was enjoyed by our students. For this term the choices were:
Environmental Activities
Explore the school's natural environment and reflect on the ways you can care for it. Have fun journaling your observations and connections in creative ways.
Skipping
Challenge yourself to learn new skipping skills as you play a variety of skipping games.
Cross Country and Athletics
Feel your heart pumping as you participate in cross country training for 20 minutes, and then for the remaining of the afternoon, challenge yourself at a different event in athletics (e.g. high jump, discus, long jump, sprints, shot put.
Robotics
Do you love lego and coding? Then we have the activity for you! Come along to create and code with the WeDo Lego kits.
Passion Projects
Ignite your curiosity and passions as you inquire into topics that interest you. Passion projects let you choose what and how you want to learn and what you will produce or create as a result.
The Kindness Crew
First, be kind to yourself by participating in activities to boost your wellbeing, such as mindful art, meditation or yoga. Then work with others to find creative ways to spread love, joy and care throughout our community through acts of kindness.
Creative Art Techniques
Are you feeling arty? Get your creativity flowing as you learn to transform designs into artistic illustrations (e.g. Mandalas, Zentangles and neurographical art).
Lego Animation
Imagine if a Lego Minifigure came to life and started walking, skateboarding, bike riding and building their own constructions. With stop-motion animation, this can all happen.
The new program links well with our REVAMP focus for 2022. These positive education elements developed by Martin Seligman account for what makes up the “good life” – an authentic and sustained happiness and well-being.
Relationships - Working with likeminded people on activities that you are interested in.
Engagement - Participate in activities that you really love, where you lose track of time when you do them.
Vitality – Supporting our student’s ability to live, grow, and develop.
Accomplishments/Achievement - Work towards small and large scale goals over the term to complete individual or group projects.
Meaning - To build meaning it is important to try new creative activities that you connect with and think about how your passions help others.
Positive Emotion - When individuals participate in activities that they enjoy.
As we move to making decisions about Term 3 Thriving Thursday activities, we will ensure there is also student voice in the decision making, so we are continually developing our students interests and passions to support their wellbeing.

Ministry
Arise Lutheran Community Church
Arise is a Lutheran community that meets at St Peters, Springfield. It’s a place where you can come to know God’s love through Jesus, and find light and hope for your life, and connect with other families from St Peters and the wider community.
In our service you will hear God’s word, sing, pray and share in Holy Communion if you want to. There’s a message for the kids too.
“Be careful in the mush pool!” Mum called out as we headed out the door to see a band at a Melbourne hotel. I think Mum meant mosh-pit, but it was close enough, we got the message.
Mum was always concerned for our wellbeing. At times she was a bit over-protective, a bit of a worrier, but we always knew this was one way she showed her love for us. As her children moved into adulthood and away from her and Dad, she would continue to check in on us. She seemed particularly concerned that in Queensland we would be swept up in a cyclone, inundated by floods, fried by the sun or consumed by a crocodile!
Mum died last year. One of the things I have missed since has been her check-ins. During the floods this year, when it was raining for days on end, there was no phone call to ask if we were okay and checking that we hadn’t been washed away. There was no concern about the 'mush pool'. Grief has many triggers.
Mums have a lifetime task of loving and caring for their children. It starts even before birth, even before conception, when the idea of a child first comes to mind. It continues for the rest of life.
When God sent Jesus to the world he chose Mary to be his mother. Mary, even in her youth and inexperience, was chosen to become the mother of our Saviour. God clearly thought Mary capable, even if Mary would surely have had moments of uncertainty, if not doubt. Mary would do God’s work of raising Jesus, who would become the Saviour of the world.
For Mary, seeing the wonder that was Jesus’ life would have been the most amazing experience. But seeing his death would have been agonising. The prophet, Simeon, had said to Mary, upon meeting the baby Jesus, “A sword will pierce your own soul too.” Is this not an accurate description of watching the suffering and death of your child?
Every day mums share in the joys and sorrows of their children. Every day mums need the grace of God to sustain them as they support their children. Every day God gives mums the capacity to continue to love and care for their children, in whatever form that takes. God delights in helping and supporting Mums as they raise their children, because as they do, they do God’s work.
We thank God for our mums!

As NAPLAN will commence each morning following Pastoral Care, it is important that students arrive at school on time. In the event of absence there will be catch-up sessions conducted throughout both the first and second week of the test schedule.
NAPLAN is aligned to the Australian Curriculum: English and Mathematics. Conventions of Language includes spelling, grammar and punctuation. Numeracy includes number and algebra, measurement and geometry, and chance and data. The Writing task will require students to write either a narrative or a persuasive text and we will not know what it is until the day of the Writing test. Year 3 students will complete the Writing test on paper.
In 2022, students will undertake NAPLAN using the online platform. NAPLAN Online delivers numerous benefits including:
a tailored test design that adapts to correct and incorrect student responses, providing a more precise understanding of student achievement
innovative use of technology, including a more engaging test design and a wider range of item types
the extension of the test window to two weeks, allowing schools greater opportunity to schedule the tests at times that suit them best and increasing student participation
Technical Requirements
Students in Year 3 will complete NAPLAN using the Year 3 iPads, which are owned and managed by St Peters and has the locked down browser installed.
Students in Year 5 will be using their BYOD iPad. The NAP locked down browser app must be downloaded (at no cost) from the app store. v1.8.3 Updated 7 October 2021
Students in Years 7 and 9 will use their BYOD laptop. The NAP locked down browser must be installed. Please click the links below to download the appropriate browser to install on the computer desktop.
Physical keyboard (wired or wireless) is required for laptops, and highly recommended for use with iPads
Parents, guardians and caregivers can support their children by making them feel comfortable about the purpose and nature of the tests and encouraging them to do their best. They can also assure students that the tests will give them an opportunity to show the knowledge and skills learned in class.
All students are encouraged to participate in NAPLAN tests. Students with a disability may qualify for adjustments that reflect the support normally provided in the classroom. Mrs Stephanie Wise, the Exceptional Learners teacher, will contact you if your child is eligible for special provisions for the tests.
A formal exemption may be granted for a student with a significant intellectual disability and/or significant coexisting conditions, or for a student who has recently arrived in Australia and has a non-English speaking background. Parents or carers may withdraw their child from the tests to address issues such as religious beliefs and philosophical objections to testing.
For those of you who have heard about our PERMA model, the basis of positive education, you will notice the absence of Vitality.
One of the major shifts to REVAMP this year as our primary model and framework for wellbeing was the exclusion of overall HEALTH.
As you know health and creating vitality is ESSENTIAL to our whole body wellbeing. It is therefore crucial to creating a WHOLE PERSON wellbeing framework.
You cannot accomplish great things if you don’t sleep.
You cannot focus in class if you haven’t eaten for a day.
You cannot be present and grounded in learning in the present if you are constantly worrying about the future and the past.
All of these elements – nutrition, taking care of your body, mind and soul, mindfulness, make up what we mean when we refer to Vitality.
A great many of our wellbeing programs are run through our PE program, this is not a coincidence. This is an intentional choice as we believe that physical and mental health walk hand in hand, you cannot have one without the other.
So with your young person this week, engage in a conversation of how they are looking after themselves holistically – you might want to share how you are also doing this for yourselves, as we know, you cannot pour from an empty cup – so take some time for yourselves today too.
Happy Week 3,
Sarah

Term 2, Week 3
How Music Primes the Brain for Learning
Ten years ago, musician Angelica Durrell began teaching a small group of Connecticut high school students how to play different percussion instruments and introduced them to variety of music styles and genres.
Within a few years, the after-school music program … became known renowned in the school district, recast from a ‘nice-to-have” extracurricular into a strategic tool for addressing some of the district’s persistent challenges. Durrell’s students, teachers and school leaders noticed, were attending school more consistently, their English was improving, and they seemed increasingly comfortable making friends. Today, Durrell’s … program serves more than 3,000 students each year, … underscoring music’s profound impact on learning from both a cognitive and a social and emotional learning (SEL) vantage point. “We went from approaching it from a music perspective,” Durrell says, “to approaching it from an immigrant inclusion, language acquisition, and grade-level reading-acquisition perspective.”
Consistent exposure to music, like learning to play a musical instrument, or taking voice lessons, strengthens a particular set of academic and social-emotional skills that re essential to learning. In ways that are unmatched by other pursuits, … learning music powerfully reinforces language skills, builds and improves reading ability, and strengthens memory and attention, according to the latest research on the cognitive neuroscience of music.
During the next few weeks, Cornerstone will feature instalments of this article by Holly Korbey, which has been published in Edutopia. Tune in each week to discover the cognitive benefits of music, how music is used as academic strength training, the sound of social cohesion and how children benefit from deep and consistent engagement.

The Open team went down in a close one, but Coach Mike was proud of their efforts. Well done to the Senior A, Senior B1, 9A, 8A & 8B who came away with wins. Our Year 7 girls fought hard, the 7A team going down by three in a close one and the 7B team Maroon team giving their all. The 10A game was forfeited at very late notice which allowed them to join the internal game between the Senior B2 & 10B teams, it was an enjoyable afternoon! The 9B team enjoyed a week off and we look forward to seeing them back on the court this Friday as we take on the Basketball powerhouse of Brisbane State High.
