Primary Curriculum Update
Art of Inquiry
During 2021 we will continue to expand our knowledge of the inquiry process following Kath Murdoch’s framework. Staff will take part in interactive sessions on the essential practices of the inquiry teacher. These practices will intertwine with the conceptual planning already in progress to focus on inquiry in a range of subjects.
Kath Murdoch has included these essential practices in her new book the ‘Art of Inquiry’. The practices we will focus on are cultivated curiosity, connect, question, release, keep it real, notice, grow learning assets, play, think big, and get personal.
Our first session last week was on cultivating curiosity. Kath Murdoch says ‘Inquiry teachers provoke, model and value curiosity – and they do this in a myriad of ways. Curiosity is nurtured through the way the learning space is curated, the kinds of questions asked, the extent to which the learners’ questions are valued and through the deliberate, infectious modelling of curiosity by the teacher themselves’.
Smart Spelling and Smart Foundation
In 2021 our Primary School from Prep-Year 6 has implemented SMART Spelling which is a balanced, whole-school approach to teaching spelling in the classroom. SMART spelling was designed by Michelle Hutchison, who has teaching experience and qualifications with a focus on differentiation in literacy.
There is a clear scope and sequence that teachers follow. Teachers start by teaching the meaning of words to expand vocabulary and then break words into syllables, sounds and letter patterns (graphs, digraphs and trigraphs) following a simple routine. Students are explicitly taught spelling patterns, one at a time. Teachers choose a range of words (from simple to complex) from a suggested list in the manual. Students are then guided to choose from that list, to meet different needs. Personal words are also a focus in SMART Spelling. Teachers use their strong professional knowledge to give meaningful feedback to students about their spelling in writing, teaching at the point of need.
The core of SMART Spelling in the classroom involves the use of the SMART sequence:
Say the word
Meaning: put it in context and discuss variations
Analyse it in terms of syllables, sounds and letters
Remember it by focusing on the parts of the word we need to remember, and then
Teach it by spelling the word aloud using letter names and clustering.
Heggerty Phonemic Awareness
In 2020 we introduced the Heggerty Phonemic Awareness program in Prep and Year 1. Strong phonemic awareness is crucial to children being automatic decoders of print. Dr Michael Heggerty created an explicit and systematic approach in which students are practicing blending, segmenting, isolating and manipulating words, syllables, onset-rime and/or phonemes each day.
In 2021 we are expanding this program to use in our Learning Intervention program.
Ongoing Curriculum Information
I encourage parents to engage with the Firefly pages that are sent through each week by our Pastoral Care teachers that share information about weekly learning goals and focus areas. If there are any questions at all about the teaching and learning in the classroom your child’s teachers are always available to answer any questions. Our two Curriculum Leaders, Mrs Hofstee and Ms Levitt, are also available to support parent questions.
We look forward to a productive Term 2 where our students are engaged in their learning.
Warm regards
Debbie West-McInnes Head of Primary Years

Thank You Mum
In the bible, God says: As a mother comforts her child, I will comfort you (Isaiah 66:12,13). Mothers have a special place in our hearts – there is no doubt that it’s one of the biggest and most comprehensive jobs anyone can do. Mother’s day is only one day in the year while being a mother is more than a full-time occupation, but it gives us a chance to say a big thanks. Here’s a song from an unknown writer, but I think it could be from any of us:
Thank you Jesus for my mum She’s my hero, she’s my chum And thank you for the times to come Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you mum
Thank you Jesus for my mum Cheers me up when I am glum Helps with homework (does my sums) Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you mum
Thank you Jesus for my mum Keeps me clean and fills my tum Cleans my sneakers (though they hum) Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you mum
Thank you Jesus for my mum Cuddled me when I was young Changed my diaper, cleaned my bum Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you mum
Thank you Jesus for my mum Thinks I'm an angel (but she's wrong) Sees my good points, when there's none Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you mum
What more can I say, except to leave you with a special blessing:
May the blessing of the Divine Be an especially bright benediction Upon mothers everywhere On your blessed day - On Mother's Day!
God bless.

Years 3 and 5 students are not permitted to use a calculator for the Numeracy test, however Years 7 and 9 students will complete both calculator and non-calculator elements.
NAPLAN is aligned to the Australian Curriculum: English and the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics. Questions are multiple choice or require a short written response. This year, the Writing task will require students to write either a narrative or a persuasive text. This will be evident from the stimulus they are given and we will not know what it is until the day of the Writing test. There will be one Writing prompt for students in Years 3 and 5, and a second, different prompt for students in Years 7 and 9.
National Testing provides information on how students are developing in the specified areas in relation to national benchmarks. The tests also useful provide useful information which assists in improving teaching and learning.
Teachers will expose students to similar test formats and question types through an integrated approach in the lead-up to national testing. NAPLAN tests are one aspect of the school’s assessment and reporting process, and do not replace the extensive, school-based assessments of student performance.
Parents, guardians and caregivers can support their children by making them feel comfortable about the purpose and nature of the tests and encouraging them to do their best. They can also assure students that the tests will give them an opportunity to show the knowledge and skills learned in class.
All students are encouraged to participate in NAPLAN tests. Students with a disability may qualify for adjustments that reflect the support normally provided in the classroom. Mrs Stephanie Wise, the Exceptional Learners teacher, will contact you if your child is eligible for special provisions for the tests.
A formal exemption may be granted for a student with significant intellectual disability and/or significant coexisting conditions, or for a student who has recently arrived in Australia and has a non-English speaking background. Parents or carers may withdraw their child from the tests to address issues such as religious beliefs and philosophical objections to testing.
For further information regarding NAPLAN or the processes for adjustments, exemption and withdrawal, please contact Susan Levitt (Prep – Year 6 Curriculum Leader).

Susan Levitt Prep – Year 6 Curriculum Leader: Assessment and Reporting
Year 4 went on an excursion to the Wynnum/Manly foreshore to explore the ecosystem of the ocean and mangroves. They enjoyed going out on the boat, Inspiration, to catch plankton and then look at the variety of organisms through a microscope. The excursion gave the students an opportunity to sequence key stages in the lifecycle of crabs and mangroves. Also, the students gained further understandings of how living things depend on each other to survive.
The Arts
Yr 8 Production
The Year 8 Production is a highlight for Junior High students. Based on the theme of Murder Mystery, students write, rehearse and perform their own plays and songs.
To kick this off, students participated in a Scriptwriting workshop, facilitated by Thomas Larkin. Thomas is an award-winning actor, voice artist and arts educator. A graduate of the Victorian College of Arts (VCA), his professional career spans over a decade. He has performed on stage and in film and television. In 2019, he was the recipient of the Best Supporting Male Actor at the Matilda Awards. Thomas is fast becoming a sought-after voice artist, contributing to animated features, audiobooks, documentaries, podcasts and advertising campaigns. Thomas is also a Co-Director of the Brisbane-based theatre collective “Myths Made Here”, and in 2021, will stage “Medea” at QPAC’s Cremorne Theatre. He is a recent recipient of the Brisbane City Council Lord Mayor’s Young and Emerging Artists Fellowship, and has established himself as a teaching artist and acting coach, working across schools, performing arts and corporate contexts.
During the workshops, students experimented with characterisation and explored the fundamentals of script-writing. They were led through a variety of practical tasks centred around character formation, and worked through various plot scenarios.

AIC Boys Sport Round 1 V Padua
Congratulations to all boys who represented the College in Round 1 Rugby and Football Fixtures on the weekend. St Peters had a successful round of Football against Padua winning a majority of games including 1st and 2nd XV Football. Rugby has a tough afternoon against strong Padua teams but it was great to see boys competing throughout the games.
First Rugby and Football Selections
Congratulations to the following boys who were selected to represent the College in First Rugby and Football over the weekend – Kadin P, Vamoe K and August F in Rugby and Zane P and Cameron A-W in Football. These boys have worked hard and gone through many ours of training to achieve this honour. Well done gentlemen!
First Rugby Captain
Congratulations to Kadin P in Year 11 who has been given the honour of captaining the First XV Rugby team in 2021. Kadin is not only one of the standout players in the 2021 team but as part of the leadership team has set high expectations on the playing group on and off and the field. Kadin becomes the first St Peters Springfield boy to Captain First XV Rugby – a significant milestone for the school. Congratulations Kadin
QGSSSA Girls Autumn Sport
Well done to all girls who continue to represent the College across QG Autumn Fixtures in Basketball, Touch and Football. Last Friday’s fixtures against Brisbane State High were touch with only a few teams getting a win. Congratulations to the Senior B (Luci G, Aiel P, Emma C-G, Sofia R P, Fiona B), 10B (Maddie H) and 7B (Lola S) Basketball teams had good wins. Ella-Jaye H-L and Hayley C also had a win with the 9A Touch team. We look forward to Friday fixtures against St Margaret’s.

Last Friday we took on the QG Basketball Powerhouse of BSHS; a tough night for the Saints with our OPEN girls going down but showing great fight to the end – Coach Mike was proud of the girl’s effort.
We came away with four victories - 7B, 9B, 10B & Senior B. The war cry sung by the girls was amazing to watch with the 7B girls singing ‘Oh when the Saints’ for the first time. Well done girls!
The Saints hit the court for a home game this Friday against St Margaret’s.
By the Numbers:
4 - The amount of points the 7B girls won by (24-20) 47 – 10B’s winning margin (51- 4) 10 - The number of girls who played in the 7A game (losing 40-10) 100 – BSHS celebrated their 100 years Centenary – The Open girls, coaches and families enjoy the celebration after their game.
Round 6 Games v St Margaret’s: Friday 7 May – Please CLICK HERE for the draw.
The girls had their biggest test to date last week as they took on Brisbane State High School. All games displayed a very high level of skill from both teams and were captivating to watch. The Junior/Intermediate B team showed huge improvement from the last time the teams faced off but unfortunately didn’t quite get the win, going down 2-3. The Junior A team faced off against a BSHS team with a huge number of representative players and went down 10-0. The girls did very well in putting up a good fight and playing their own game regardless of the score line. The Intermediates put in a huge effort to make a competitive game after two quick goals from BSHS early on. The girls were unlucky to not put a number of goals away themselves and went down 3-0 in the end. The Senior team played strong and showed that they are starting to gel as a team more and more every week, coming away with a 3-0 loss against a very strong BSHS team. The Open girls have had a string of bad luck with injury and illness and went into this match missing some very key players. The girls fought right to the end and were extremely competitive until the final whistle, finishing down 4-0. It was a challenging round but one I am sure all teams will take a lot of experience away from.
Round 6 Games v St Margaret’s: Friday 7 May – Please CLICK HERE for the draw.
Perhaps the dark clouds that descended over our two campuses at lunchtime; the persistent showers that ensued for the icy air that greeted us as we disembarked the buses were hints of the afternoon that awaited us, but St Peters Touch girls are a tough bunch and we’d come to Whites Hill to play. Unfortunately, our Round 5 opponents, Brisbane State High School, and the weather in the second round, really did rain on our parade with all but two teams tasting defeat. State High boasts outstanding Touch talent so wins for our 9As and 9/10B composite teams were an outstanding achievement. Well done ladies. This week we battle St Margaret’s at home (UQ) and look forward to a raucous Saints crowd to cheer us on to many more victories.
Round 6 Games v St Margaret’s: Friday 7 May – Please CLICK HERE for the draw.
Well done to all the girls that participated in the compulsory meet at Rivermount on Tuesday afternoon. With over 80 girls attending it was a huge turnout for our last QG meet of the season, Mrs Schreiber is now working hard to finalise the team that will be named in the next few days.
The big day of competition for the 2021 QGSSSA Cross Country season is Saturday 15 May. For those girls new to Cross Country, buses will leave the St Peters Bus Stop at 6.30am to take the girls to Rivermount College, Yatala. It is important the girls travel together to the event as part of the team. Parents can take girls home after their race or buses will return to school at the completion of the competition (approx. 1.00pm). The QGSSSA Cross Country Championships are always a fun filled morning where every member of the team supports each other in running 3km. Please support our runners by being part of 2021 QGSSSA Cross Country, we look forward to seeing you run.
The 2021 Cross Country season calendar is on the St Peters App.

Thanks again to all the girls who came to Rhythmic Gymnastics training on Wednesday.
We had another fun filled, jam packed afternoon working on many rotations.
As a reminder, may I please ask that all girls email me (n.maynard@stpeters.qld.edu.au) if you are going to be absent from training. It is imperative that we are aware of absences.
In the meantime, keep practising and we look forward to seeing you next week!

Last Saturday we started off our Term 2 AIC Sports with Round 1 versus Padua College. I can confidently say how very proud of our young men of St Peters Lutheran College. Congratulations each and every boy who represented our College on Friday evening at Chess and/or on Saturday participating in Rugby or Football. It was so great to see such positive enthusiasm and such great support being shown both on and off the playing field.
Congratulations to both our Years 7 to 12 Chess and Football teams who ‘won the day’ against Padua. It would be remiss of me to not to also acknowledge the courage, tenacity and enthusiasm of all our Rugby teams. The ‘never say die’ attitude was so ever present, particularly in the First XV game whereby our boys fought to the very last minute in what was a tightly contested game. This attitude, for me, optimises our College’s motto of Plus Ultra.
With Round 2 approaching us this weekend, we need to ensure that we are well prepared and ready to play with the same enthusiasm and attitude that was present last Saturday.
I would like to encourage all the St Peters community to get around our boys sporting teams and come along and support on Saturday 8 May. Let’s make St Peters sport even greater and positively celebrate what a fantastic job all our boys and their coaches are doing in 2021.

Our 1st XV, 2nd XV and 10A teams will play at ‘home’ on Mayer Oval and our Junior teams will be away at Villanova Park, Tingalpa. 2021 AIC Cross Country & Runners Club
The 2021 AIC Championships will be held on Wednesday 2 June at Curlew Park, Sandgate. As our training now starts to fully focus on these championships with just over three weeks left to prepare. We really encourage all boys who wish to be included in the 2021 St Peters Cross Country Team for the AIC Championships to ensure they are committed to attending training and any lead up races or events which we will be conducting.
We still welcome all boys from Years 7 to 12 to get involved in our Cross Country program or the social Runners Club.
Training times and our Cross Country Calendar can be found on the St Peters App. Boys can also find more details about Cross Country from the weekly sport email sent to them by Mr Donatini.
Special Congratulations – Australian National Beach Volleyball Championships
Over the past week two St Peters students competed for Queensland at the Australian National Beach Volleyball Championships. Kye VB (Year 10) competed for Queensland in the Under 16 Team whilst Jai D (Year 10) competed in the Under 17 Team.
At the conclusion of the Australian Championships Kye podium placed and was awarded Bronze (3rd) whilst Jai won 7th overall. This is a fantastic result for both boys and we as a College would like to recognised and congratulate then on a sensational performance at a National level – Well done!
