One of my favourite photos from this year is of an older student on the Concourse, getting amongst the Primary Years students who were playing handball, encouraging them and high-fiving them. The student was smiling and enjoying themselves, and the grins on the younger students’ faces show how much they appreciated the attention. The student wasn’t an official captain and didn’t know that a staff member was observing from afar and had taken the photo. This moment in time is just one example of the incredible leadership that our St Peters Springfield students display each day and an example of the opportunities we have as an authentic P-12 community located all on the one site.
Student leadership starts right from Prep. It was wonderful to see our Preps walk up excitedly to receive their Junior Bible gift from Arise Lutheran Church at a special Bible Presentation Assembly this week. What a special milestone in their lives! We know that the stories inside will help to shape our youngest students’ character, their concept of serving others and their faith, as they learn about God and Jesus.
Many buddy systems have formed across the College, showing leadership and service. It is pleasing that our Year 5 buddies are forming bonds with our Prep students and guiding them in the right ways and that our Year 4s are visiting the Kindergarten to connect with many up and coming St Peters students.
Our Year 6 students have been learning specifically about leadership through their curriculum. Many Year 6 students braved a wet and chilly morning, just as our Australian service people have done, on 25 April when they attended the Springfield ANZAC Day Service at the ADF Memorial.
This past week, the Year 6s had their special Leadership Assembly attended by their parents. In the assembly, we highlighted what leadership means – it is about character which involves showing respect, kindness, empathy and service. We also explored that it is not about ‘being right’ but ‘getting it right’; leadership involves actively listening to people’s perspectives and trying to find the most positive way forward for all in situations, looking for the greatest good. Our Year 6 students were presented with their leadership t-shirts and many of them commented to me just how excited they were about these!
The Year 6s finished their week with incursions where they learnt the language of leadership – how to give clear directions, encourage each other and support each other, as they completed a range of activities. They cooked a BBQ together which they thoroughly enjoyed. We look forward to our Year 6 students honing their leadership skills and bringing these into the Junior High in 2023.
In our Junior High, our Year 9 students are now also exploring leadership as they ready themselves for captaincy positions. This process traditionally follows the Ironbark experience where the students have had opportunities to grow in their character and in their relationships with each other.
Our Year 11 students are looking outwards with their leadership, with a focus on serving others, as they consider leadership roles for Year 12. They are helping the school community by engaging in some of the following activities:
Reading to our Prep-Year 2 students
Helping out at the Hearts Cafe
Helping with Art classes for the younger grades
Participating in Alpha Club
Organising games for the Primary school students on the Concourse at lunch
Helping with adhoc tasks for the IT Department
Helping out with events including more recently, the Mother’s Day Breakfast.
We are very proud of the leadership that all of our students show each and every day here at the College.
I will leave you with the words of our College Captains and Vice-Captains – Luci, Joel, Lauren and Purvie – who are working towards the following goals for St Peters Springfield this year in order to leave their legacy:
Our Student Leadership Team has big plans for 2022. We want to strengthen our community even further, so that our foundational values of Care, Dignity, and Respect are cemented in our reputation as St Peters. Activities like Multicultural Day/s, Performing Arts showcase, and inter-house competitions are just a few of the ways we aim to enact this plan. We also recognise the significance in our role as a school to share the opportunities we have to others who are less fortunate. Fundraising events for 'Day for Daniel' and 'Cancer Awareness' are very important to us in helping spread the love and kindness that is so fundamental to our community. We want to leave behind a Year 12 legacy that is remembered by the younger grades as a standard they would proudly aim to emulate. Through our actions, we want to establish a culture of respect and honour so that the coming leaders can build on our success even further.

Ministry
Trust
During the week in Chapel, students and staff heard the story of Jesus and Peter walking on the water from Matthew’s gospel. It’s a classic story of faith and trust. Jesus appears like a ghost, amidst the stormy water. The disciples are anxious. Jesus reassures them. Peter walks towards Jesus but sees the wind and waves and begins to sink. “Save me!”, Peter cries, and Jesus reaches out and grabs him by the hand and takes him back to the boat. The storm subsides.
This incident in Jesus’ life can be interpreted through the lens of trust. In the storms of life, we can trust the God who is with us in Jesus. At first, Peter trusted that it was Jesus walking on the water. Peter trusted that he could also walk on the water after Jesus’ invitation to do so. Trust involves risk and doubt at times but also confidence and strength. All good descriptors of Peter and all good descriptions of what we can experience in our relationship with Jesus throughout life. In the community here at St Peters we are given opportunities to trust in Jesus’ word and promises. Trust is a simple way of describing faith. Having a quiet confidence in the God who comes to save us.
The disciples who were in the boat witnessing this event declared Jesus to be the Son of God. That he truly had power over mother nature. It takes quite a bit of trust to believe in someone who can walk on water. Our modern ears might find it hard to trust such a supernatural occurrence occurred. It’s a risk to do so but not unreasonable to believe that this man who claimed to be God is beyond the laws of nature and the creator of them. In the end, this story of Jesus shows that faith is trusting what we hear rather than what we see. Faith is trusting the promises of God. The God who comes to us in Jesus to save us through the storms we experience.
An Old Testament verse that speaks of this view of faith is from Isaiah 30:15, In quietness and in trust shall be your strength.
May God bless you and strengthen you with such trust this term.

In Term Two, Prep and Year 5 students have been very excited to begin the buddy program. Students in Prep S have been partnered with a student in 5S, and Prep T students have been partnered with 5T. Buddies meet regularly throughout the year to complete fun activities together. These activities include literacy and Maths activities, and art projects.
There are a range of benefits from this buddy program; Year 5 students learn to take on leadership responsibilities in preparation for Year 6, and it fosters a sense of community within the College by creating friendships that enables both older and younger buddy to bond more closely.

Wellbeing on Wellness Way
Weekly Wellbeing
Accomplishment
This element of Positive Education, making up our wellbeing framework can be called accomplishment OR achievement.
I would like to stress to you here that no achievement looks the same.
For some students, receiving an A might be a great accomplishment.
For another student, attending school for 5 days in a row is a great accomplishment.
With achievement, the benchmark is different for every person – but every person has a different starting line.
What is important for ALL people is that we celebrate all wins, big and small. And more importantly we celebrate the PROCESS rather than the PERSON.
Praise for achievement can be a vehicle for future success and wellbeing, or it can be the opposite.
When we praise a person for example, “you are so clever”, “you are so smart” – we are putting our expectations on that being the definition of THEM, so that the day they fail – and they will fail, as this is living – they will no longer be “smart”, and they’ve been praised for this, so now they are nothing.
When we praise a PROCESS for example, “I love how hard you worked on that piece of writing”, “they way you kept trying to paint that parrot was awesome” – you are making the praise process centred, meaning that you are taking pride in their EFFORT, and we know that EFFORT is what creates future success and academic achievement.
We all know that the people that have made the most of their lives aren’t the ones who were the smartest, they were the ones who worked the hardest… this is how we foster that.
For more information on grit, which focuses on praise, I encourage you to read ‘Grit’ but Angela Duckworth. It’s a good one.
Happy Week 4,
Sarah
Primary Years
Year 6 Leadership Week
Our Year 6 leaders finally took part in their Leadership Week activities postponed from Term 1.
On Wednesday 4 May, parents watched on as the Year 6 leaders received their leadership badges and shirts. Our Year 6 teachers, Mrs Stolz and Mr Knight, introduced each student with Mrs West-McInnes presenting the badges and shirts. Our School Captains, Joel and Lucy shared some words of wisdom about leadership. Mrs Houston also shared words of encouragement with our Year 6 students.
Students and parents then took part in a delicious morning tea whilst taking photos to remember this special day.
Character Builders once again provided our students with a day of challenges, team work, questions, reflections to support their understanding of what leadership is and isn’t.
Although our Kokoda challenge was cancelled, the students were able to be involved in a modified challenge session provided by Character Builders. Making their own lunch and then Boot Camp provided the students with the opportunity to use some of the learnings from the previous day.

How Music Primes the Brain for Learning – Part Two
The Cognitive Benefits of Music
The key to understanding music’s advantages, researchers ay, lies in how the brain processes sound, the raw material of music, language, and – perhaps counterintuitively – learning to read. The sounds that come in through our ears travel along an anatomically complex “auditory pathway that’s deeply connected to parts of the brain that determine how humans move, how we think and speak, what we know, and what we pay attention to. “The hearing brain is vast,” explains Nina Kraus, author of the new book “Of Sound Mind”. “People think of the hearing brain as being a silo within the brain. In fact, our hearing engages our cognitive, sensory, motor, and reward systems. That’s huge. From an evolutionary perspective, being able to make sense of sound is ancient and has engaged all these different perspectives”.
What makes music learning so powerful is how it engages all those different systems in a single activity. To play the violin, for example, a student needs to coordinate their motor, cognitive, and sensory systems to be able to put their fingers on the correct strings and move the bow at the right time; to read musical notes on a sheet of music and know what sounds they represent; and to hear if the pitches and rhythms are correct and coordinating with other players at the right time. Then there’s how the sound of music makes the student feel, which lights up the brain’s reward system. Engaging all these different systems makes leaning how to play music one of the richest and deepest brain activities that humans perform. “Teachers resoundingly tell me that children who play music also do better in school,” Kraus writes. Young musicians also tend to have stronger language and reading skills than non-musicians because their brains have spent more time actively “engaging with sound”.
The type of instrument doesn’t matter: flute, violin, accordion, piano, voice – even abundant exposure to music can make an impact. “What is important is that engaging with sound changes and strengthens how the brain responds to sound,” Kraus says.
Ipswich Junior Eisteddfod
Four ensembles – Poco Voce, Bella Voce, Con Brio and Allegro/Cantabile Strings – will be performing in the Junior Eisteddfod towards the end of this month. Students and teachers have been working hard, despite continued disruptions, to prepare repertoire for performance. We wish them all the best for this new experience.
Private Tuition Recitals
Students involved in the school’s Private Tuition Programme are invited to perform at this semester’s series of recitals. There will be 4 recitals, held over Wednesday 25 May and Thursday 26 May. Please register quickly, as numbers and time allocations will be monitored. Best wishes to all students performing.

2022 AUTUMN FIXTURES – FOCUS ROUNDS
Congratulations to our senior students lead by our Captains on the support shown for the third Focus Round for Autumn Fixtures. Last Friday the students again came out in force to support our Football girls. The atmosphere was fantastic at Toowong FC with some great games, the Open team putting up an amazing fight again BSHS, they may not have won the game, but they certainly did themselves proud.
CONGRATULATIONS
We have had some incredible achievement over the past couple of weeks with students being selected in Queensland teams /Australian squads, I look forward to sharing more details of their successes over the coming weeks.
GOOD LUCK - Many of our swimmers head off this weekend to Adelaide for the Australian National Swimming Championships, we wish them well for a successful week of competition.
WINTER FIXTURES - NETBALL, VOLLEYBALL, HOCKEY & TENNIS
SIGN ONS ARE NOW COMPLETE
All pre-season training sessions will commence next week. Please watch for further details from each Sport Coordinator, training schedules will be on the St Peters App as soon as they are finalised.
Last Friday was one of those days in Sport where I walked away feeling very proud! We may not have won many games, but I was so proud of our girls. Led by our amazing team of coaches, we made the late change of venue for many teams to BSHS which presented the opportunity to play on an indoor court. Our teams showed grit and determination against much bigger and stronger opposition and the 10B and 9B had great wins, well done to these teams. The Open teams score did not reflect the game, our girls were with then until the las quarter, down by 1 at half time. Well done to all girls 😊
Good luck Girls for Round 7.
Round 6 Results & Player of the Round
Please CLICK HERE for details of the Round 7 Draw v St Margaret’s for this Thursday afternoon – The draw can also be found on the St Peters App.
Round 6 saw St Peters come up against BSHS, with multiple teams fighting for the top spot on the table. This round was also our school focus round, and it was excellent to see supporters make their way down to Toowong FC to cheer on the girls! The round did not disappoint with some very close results and a high degree of skill on display.
The Junior girls put up a big fight against a very strong opponent, finishing with a 3-1 loss. The game was neck and neck up until the last few minutes before BSHS managed to get a couple away. So much heart was shown by the girls to give it everything they had until the last second.
The Intermediates brought their A-game and came away with a 5-0 win. This cements their spot at the top of their table at this stage of the competition. With three rounds to go, the girls will be working hard to ensure they maintain this excellent form.
The Senior A team put on one of the most nail-biting performances I have had the pleasure of watching. The teams were goal for goal the entire game, which ended in a 5-5 draw. This leaves the Seniors tied for the top spot on the table.
The Opens showed so much grit and determination to make a statement against BSHS this year. Unfortunately, they were too strong this year and managed to beat the girls 3-1. It really was anyone’s game, with so much talent on display and huge efforts put in by all.
Well done girls across the program for some incredible performances in such a tough round!
Unfortunately, the rainy weather has wreaked havoc with our Touch fixtures. Last week our games against Brisbane State High School were cancelled because UQ closed their fields. These games have now been rescheduled to Tuesday 24 May. Further information about these games will be communicated toward the end of next week. The games against St Margaret’s, scheduled for Thursday 12 May, have been abandoned due to the weather, however the Open’s match will be rescheduled. More details about this rescheduled game will be released once dates have been confirmed. It’s been such a tough season, but the touch girls and their families have done an outstanding job managing such uncertainty (and soggy boots and uniforms).
ROUND 7 FIXTURES v ST MARGARET’S - CANCELLED
DATE CLAIMER: Rescheduled Round 3 games v St Aidan’s Date: Monday 16 May 2022 Venue: Ambiwerra Sports Fields, Erinvale St, Corinda Teams: Senior A, 10A, 8/9B & 8A (one round of games only)

It continues to be fantastic to see all the girls on the water both in the mornings and of an afternoon, as well as in the gym. As we approach the middle of the term, can I please remind families that consistency of attendance both on the water and in the gym is critical in preparation for the upcoming Rowing Camp and the regattas next term. The more time the girls can spend on the water as crews and individuals in single sculls, the better and more prepared they are going to become for the regattas, and the more fun they have in the long run!
BSRA Indoor Rowing Championships
Next Tuesday evening, 17 May, we see the first Rowing Competition for the 2022 year – the BSRA Indoor Rowing Championships at Somerville house.
All girls are required to attend this competition as supporters for the College, though not all will be participating.
The College will be providing a bus to and from Somerville house for all girls, girls are required to be on this bus together, details below.
Departing the St Peters Bus Stop - 3.45pm
Returning to the St Peters Bus Stop - 8.30pm
Ergometer and Sculling Trials
Trials, within the context of the Rowing Program, are undertaken based on three factors: ergometer times, sculling times, and attendance/attitude to training. These trials are completed at the BSRA Regattas, which are held on a Saturday in Term 3, each age group is divided into divisions (i.e. Year 8, Division 1, 2,3 etc). The goal of these trials is to place each girl into appropriate crews that will be competitive within these divisions at regattas.
Upcoming trials -
On Wednesday (11/05) afternoon the girls complete the first trial for the season on the ergometers in the gym.
Saturday 21 May, the girls will complete their first sculling trial on the Brisbane River. All girls will complete these trials within their normal scheduled Saturday training times – can I please ask families to ensure that girls are present to complete these trials.
If girls are absent and do not complete these trials, it makes it impossible to correctly place girls into appropriate crews. As always if there are unforeseen circumstances, these will be taken into account.
Boys Season Celebration and Girls Season Launch | New Rowing Boat fleet Blessing – Saturday 21 May
Between 4pm-6pm on Saturday 21 May the Rowing community is invited to the 2022 Boys Season Celebration, Girls Season Launch and the New Boats Christening. I look forward to celebrating together with the whole community at this event.
Girls Rowing Camp
The Rowing Camp is an integral event for the girls in a number of ways. Firstly, as a shed and community building event, the time spent away at these camps is generally a highlight as it a fantastic team bonding time where girls are able to spend time and develop lifelong friendships, not only within their year level but from all year levels. Secondly as an important fitness and technical foundation for the crews which leads into the BSRA regattas which start a few weeks after.
Camp this year is between the 18-24 June in Bundaberg.
All transport, accommodation and food will be organised for the girls with forms and costs are currently being finalised. Could I please ask families to put these dates in the diary for the girls to attend.
Thank you girls! Another fantastic week of RG training!
This week, both training sessions concentrated on movement sequences. Years 8 and 9 girls revisited their routines from last year, while Year 11 girls showcased their ball routine.
Each week, the girls will train with two apparatus – Hoop and Ball.
Performance groups have now been finalised and these will be announced at next week’s training.
Please be mindful of keeping the same time each week for training. This will help with coaching and team routines.
Date Claimer: QGSSSA RHYTHMIC GYMNASTICS CHAMPIONSHIPS – FRIDAY 5 AUGUST (Week 4, Term 3). The 2022 Rhythmic Gymnastics Calendar can be found on the St Peters App
As always, keep up the great work, keep practising and keep smiling.
I’ll see you at training 😊🤸♀️🤸♂️

Last weekend was a successful round of AIC Sport for St Peters. Commencing with the success of our St Peters Chess boys who competed against Villanova on Friday afternoon and finished with some exceptional games of Rugby and Football on Saturday, at Villanova College Playing Fields, Tingalpa.
It was extremely impressive to again witness with the overall enthusiasm and sportsmanship of our boys. The pride they display when competing for their College is overwhelmingly evident. For this, I do thank them for living up to our college’s motto of Plus Ultra.
Looking forward, we now get prepared for Round 3 this weekend as St Peters takes on St Edmund’s College. With a week of poor weather and more severe rain predicted, we will be watching carefully in the hope that fields will be playable.
To all our teams competing, we wish them every success and look forward to once again witnessing some strong support from our St Peters community both at home and at St Edmund’s College, Ipswich.

St Peters Cricket News
Dear Parents/Carers,
What a fantastic and enjoyable year for St Peters Cricket!
The 2021-2022 St Peters Cricket season was our most successful yet with player numbers growing from 174 to over 250 boys across 22 teams. Support for Cricket has never been as strong, and we expect to field more teams with over 300 players next season.
There are many expenses connected with running the Cricket program, and we solely rely on our own fundraising efforts through the support of the school community, local businesses and school grants. The growth in player numbers will require a significant investment in new equipment and training apparel - crucial to our program being successful.
Funding is also important for us to be able to engage highly respected specialist Coaches that will be involved in all age on a regular basis though the year.
The St Peters Cricket Program is seeking key sponsors for the 2022-2023 season, and we are reaching out to the community to be a part of this exciting growth before seeking external sponsors and all the money raised goes back to helping our boys and the Program.
By partnering with St Peters Cricket, you will be supporting an outstanding Cricket program that caters for all boys from Juniors to Seniors leading into Representative Cricket.
We have a detailed prospectus available which outlines the program for both corporate and community sponsorship options and costs. If you would like to be a part of the exciting growth in St Peters cricket, we welcome the opportunity to speak with you.
Please do not hesitate to contact the St Peters Cricket Parents Support Group at cricketpsg@stpeters.qld.edu.au to request a prospectus, and we thank you in advance for your consideration.
Kind regards,
The Cricket Support Group
