Having missed gathering in person to honour others for much of 2020, it was all-the-more precious to welcome almost 100 mums at the recent Mothers’ Day breakfast and following Chapel service on a beautiful Friday morning on the Concourse.
It is never lost on me that Mothers’ Day follows closely after ANZAC Day and Easter. At Easter we remember the loving selfless sacrifice of Christ, who gave his life for us, so that we could be restored to right relationship with God. At ANZAC Day we remember all those who have fallen in battle and sacrificed for us, and those who continue to serve and sacrifice, in defence of our country, by which we can enjoy the freedoms that we have.
Mothers’ Day then follows, and we take the time to thank and honour our mums for their selflessness and the sacrifices they lovingly make for us. They put their children and families ahead of themselves and are unconditional and steadfast in their love which provides enduring comfort to their children. We see much of God in such love. Indeed, God works through us as parents to love, care for and raise up our young people.
It is no surprise then to find in the Ten Commandments that we are to ‘Honour your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you’ (Exodus 20:12). God calls us to honour our parents and in doing so we in turn receive blessing.
We have heard lots of commentary in the media of late, regarding the revision of the National Curriculum, of what schools should be doing to instil values in our young people that will benefit society, building communities of wellbeing and respect. Indeed, such formation has always been a fundamental part of the mission of Lutheran schools. Of course, such formation is our collective responsibility, of society in general. It begins in our homes and in our families and is supported, consolidated and furthered in our schools, churches and other community agencies.
NAPLAN has been held this week and it is a point in case of the values that are conveyed by school and parents either explicitly or implicitly. Our words and behaviours in relation to NAPLAN communicate value messages to our young people. I believe that we take a healthy approach at St Peters that does not place undue stress on students by building up NAPLAN to be bigger that it needs to be.
NAPLAN results do not define a child nor are they intended to be worn as mantles of public achievement nor serve as anchors of distress should a child not meet an expectation reasonably conceived or otherwise. Unfortunately, in some schools, NAPLAN has become the primary focus at the expense of other important aspects of the curriculum and the education, formation and wellbeing of our young people.
NAPLAN results do serve a constructive purpose as formative feedback to guide and inform teaching and learning and we do analyse these results for this purpose at St Peters. They are one set of results alongside many, part of an evolving profile.
Commitment to academic excellence is a fundamental College priority reflected in the Plus Ultra 2025 Strategic Intent. One strategy being employed to assist students achieve to their potential is the implementation of a data analytics suite across the College. This will allow teachers and leaders alike to bring the range of student academic data, accumulated over time and for each student and each group of students, together in a meaningful and accessible way to monitor progress and inform teaching, learning and mentoring of students. NAPLAN data forms a helpful part of this landscape. Training commenced in Term 1 for school leaders in the use of this suite of analytic tools which will be progressively rolled out to our teaching staff under the direction of the College’s Director of Teaching and Learning Innovation, Mr Peter MacDonald, with whom we work closely.
We appreciate the commitment of staff and parents alike to the education and formation of our young people. We want them to excel in their learning, lift their vision, be of exceptional character and flourish in life. It is about living out our Plus Ultra motto with Care, Dignity and Respect.

Ascension Day
This week we celebrate Ascension Day: the risen Jesus ascending into heaven – a heavenly story!
There are actually quite a few Christian and biblical references about heaven - God in heaven; God's kingdom being compared to heaven; the three wise men following the star to find the newborn Jesus; and many more.
Yet, in ancient times, people thought God was reigning above the clouds; they perceived the sky being ‘God country’. This ‘top down’ understanding can be seen in the way God was pictured for centuries in paintings, in church decorations and also in the way the church preached about: God - the 'King in heaven' ruling us earthlings down here through his commandments and one day calling us to give account of our lives on judgement day. We see it with God depicted by many as the judge who kept account of our wrongdoings – and would one day punish us accordingly.
But then planes were invented, missiles that flew up to the moon and other planets; that showed amazing images of the earth being just a tiny planet amongst trillion others, a tiny little spot in the huge universe!!
So, where does that leave us? What do we make of ‘heaven’? Where is ‘God country’?
The story of Jesus ascending into heaven may point us in a helpful direction, because it has an interesting twist:
After Jesus was taken up before the eyes of his friends, they were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky?” (Acts 1:10-11)
Don’t look to the heaven, you won’t find God there. God is not up there in the clouds; the sky is not ‘God country’. Heaven is not a place! Heaven points us – like Jesus in his whole ministry – to the presence of God right here among us! Heaven points us to the world and people around us, where God is to be found and calls us to witness to his love and deep care for all.
Don’t stand here looking into the sky, with your head in the clouds! Because God is involved right here in your everyday life, right here amongst his people, affirming us of his loving presence for us - and calling us into action wherever we live. You get a glimpse of heaven when you are loved; you get a glimpse of heaven when you dare to make a difference in someone’s life, when you grasp what your calling to service can look like!
Celebrate Ascension Day joyfully, because God is present with and for you!
