“Children are the priority. Change is the reality. Collaboration is the strategy.” – Judith Billings
We are better together. If the world has taught us any lesson over the last two years, for me – it has been – that we accomplish more when we work as a team. Over the last year, in my wellbeing role, I have been collaborating and planning with the St Peters P&F to increase the parental involvement in our wellbeing programming here at the College.
Last year, the P & F invested in ‘Happy Families’ memberships, which were available to all parents. ‘Happy Families’ is a platform run by Dr Justin Coulson and last year the feedback we received from our community was that this information was helpful and useful for them in their parenting journey. We have continued this membership this year for our families so that they can access newsletters, webinars and information to help them to become more positive, proactive and happy parents. We encourage all parents of the College to access this useful resource.
Another P & F initiative is the seminars this week run by Dr Kristy Goodwin. Dr Goodwin is an expert in technology and the digital dilemmas that our young people are facing. On Wednesday, we were lucky enough to have two student sessions, a teacher professional session, and a session run for our parents, these sessions were absolutely insightful and engaging.
Throughout the expertly presented seminars, I took away two key learnings.
The first learning is that the most important skill of the 21st century is paying attention and that we need to focus on FQ – focus quotient, in the same way that we have attended to IQ and EQ in the past. The message Dr Goodwin gave the students is “build a fortress around your focus” in order to master the media and not be a slave to the screen. Taking back the technology and using it for us – was a key important message by Dr Goodwin.
The other learning that made me stand up and take notice was that in our student wellbeing survey – our SPLC students reported to getting around 6 hours sleep a night. This is desperately low and in fact at ages 5 – 12 children should be getting between 9 and 11 hours sleep. For teens, around 8 – 10 hours. 1 single hour less than their recommended sleep time reduces IQ by 15 points. The fact that some of these students are getting this little sleep will begin to impact their cognitive performance and attention.
We know that like us, parents are doing the best they can for their young people. We also know that when we know better, we do better. So we thank the P & F for their continued support in educating our families and community around the topics of wellbeing, so that together, we can come out of these unsettling and challenging times that the world finds itself in to be more resilient, resourceful and well.
It is a privilege to walk beside you in wellbeing for our students, and I wish you a fabulous end to Term 2.

‘Ask what I should give you’ (2 Chronicles 1:7)
That night God appeared to Solomon, and said to him, "Ask what I should give you", (2 Chronicles 1:7).
Have you ever wondered what you would wish for if you were asked for three wishes? It’s tantalising, isn’t it? Would you want wealth, beauty, power, smaller feet, curly hair, world peace, an end to lockdowns and a cure for COVID-19? Stories about Aladdin’s lamp and wishes coming true have featured in fairy tales for generations, but Solomon hits the jackpot! God asks him what he wants and actually makes good on the request. And not only does Solomon get what he wished for, but God adds on riches, possessions and honour. Wow! That is an amazing response.
I ask God for a lot of things. There are many people who I pray for on a regular and irregular basis. I don’t keep tabs on how these prayers are answered, but I know God hears those prayers and some responses have been over and above what I could have expected.
If we fast forward to Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, I find his reference to King Solomon most interesting. We have Solomon, who has wisdom and knowledge plus riches and possessions. Yet when Jesus tells us not to worry about life, he suggests that we ‘consider the lilies of the field … Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these’. And as I look at the lilies, freesias, bluebells, daisies, sweet peas and all of the other spring flowers blooming in my garden today, I have to agree that nothing made by humans can match them for colour, form, perfume and beauty! Jesus then suggests that we don’t need to worry as God is there looking after us. There is also the promise: "Strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well", (Matthew 6:25ff).
Solomon is not the only one that God is going to shower with blessings. God will also look after each of us in every way – take time to look around and recognise those blessings he has gifted us.
Loving God, thank you for hearing our prayers and answering them so generously. Please strengthen our faith in you so that when we worry, we recognise that you are looking after us and that you will provide for all of our needs in ways far beyond what we can imagine. Amen.

Last week, at a special Secondary Years Assembly and Staff Meeting, we celebrated and farewelled Mrs Sue Grotherr, Head of Secondary Years, after seven plus years of service to our community.
At the Assembly, Mrs Grotherr told our secondary students that she was an ‘accidental teacher’; having grown up in Bundaberg, she thought she’d see what university and the big city had to offer and she fell into teaching.
Aren’t we and many who have come before us so thankful for this ‘accident’?! Mrs Grotherr has brought out the best in thousands of students across every year level from her first schools in Bundaberg to those in the Ipswich/Brisbane area since 1971 – that’s over 50 years! She has served across State, Anglican and Lutheran schools as a teacher, teacher librarian and in various leadership roles, including Head of Secondary Years and P-12 Curriculum Coordinator as St Peters Springfield. This is an amazing achievement that not many could claim.
Mrs Grotherr has worked tremendously hard to guide the hearts and minds of our secondary students and to lead the secondary staff at St Peters Springfield. In doing so, she has always shown care, dignity and respect and the excellence that defines St Peters both in her work and in her relationships with all community members.
We have appreciated everything Mrs Grotherr has done for St Peters Springfield, from guiding students and staff in relation to academic and pastoral matters, organising many College events to creating the College timetable but most importantly, for the way she has gone about it all. Mrs Grotherr has been a rolemodel to us in the way that she has always considered the dignity of a person in every decision she has made and in the way she has strived to bring about the best possible outcome in every situation for our students, staff and families. Mrs Grotherr is a kind, calm, fair, creative, dedicated and hardworking educator and leader with a can-do attitude.
Mrs Grotherr – going into Education was no accident at all! God gave you special gifts, strengths and abilities and He placed you in schools to serve. You have done this marvellously well. Mrs Grotherr, we will miss your enthusiasm and upbeat personality but we are happy for you! May God bless you as you write your next chapter – metaphorically and literally!

Meaning
“Human beings, ineluctably, want meaning and purpose in life”
We are onto the M of our REVAMP theory this week.
M stands for Meaning.
Meaning is a difficult construct for some of our young people to understand. So when we discuss meaning with young people we can use different words.
Service, is a type of meaning creation. It means serving something outside of oneself. The special buzz you get when you donate to something or help someone across a street, that’s meaning.
Legacy, is a type of meaning you want to create to leave something behind. We have a Year 9 program called Legacy and that talks about what type of Legacy the students want to create for their year level, we talk about this in all year levels, especially those higher up as they come closer to graduating – our graduate tree speaks to a great level of meaning, and becoming.
Kindness, is a type of meaning. Being kind and behaving in a way that is kind creates belonging, and where people feel belonging, they feel well, and when people feel well, they can better be positioned to create long term goals in pursuit of a life of meaning.
One of the most powerful books ever to be written in regards to the construct of meaning is Viktor Frankl’s “Man’s Search for Meaning”, I encourage you to read it as parents – I encourage you to talk to your children about it too.
Take care, Sarah

How Music Primes the Brain for Learning – Part Three
Part three is this series focusses on the contribution Music learning makes to academic learning.
Music As Academic Strength Training
At a school in Sussex County, New Jersey, music teacher Shawna Longo calls out a particular rhythm, and then her kindergarten students play it on their Boomwhackers. “Now only the red ones! Do “I like pepperoni pizza,” she calls out, and the children play ta-ta-ti-ti-ti-ti-ta-ta. “They only play when I hold up their colour,” she says. “They have to learn when to wait, and when to play.”
The ability to keep a steady beat and anticipate the next beat, research has shown, are reliable indicators that a child is ready to learn to read. But keeping rhythm isn’t the only musical skill that paves the way for language development and reading, notes education researcher Anita Collins in her book, “The Music Advantage.”
Learning to read music – decoding musical notation and connecting it to sounds – activates the same “phonological loop” in the brain as when kids learn to read words, deepening sound-word connections. Collins describes the process in her book (54):
The eye sees a symbol on the page, whether it’s a quaver D or a letter “t” at the start of a word
The brain hears the sound, pulling it from the memory of music and speech sounds all brains possess
The brain instructs the body to make that sound, whether it’s hands playing an instrument, or the mouth shaped to make the “t” sound
The brain listens to be sure the correct sound was made, and then makes adjustments.
Processing sound strengthens the same areas of the brain that are responsible for learning language and learning to read – and while neuroscientists are still teasing out the how and they why, Collins writes that the latest research indicates that “music and reading may well be complementary learning activities,” with music functioning as a robust tool to improve language learning.
Ipswich Junior Eisteddfod
We have several students and ensembles participating in this locally run music eisteddfod. All the best to students and conductors as they display the results of their hard work. This is especially meritorious given the challenging start to the school year and the ongoing rehearsal disruption created by illness. There will be a report in future weeks, detailing achievements.
Private Tuition Recitals
Semester One Recitals are being held on Wednesday, 25 May, and Thursday 26 May. Registration for these recitals is open until Friday 20 May. The details and links have been sent to eligible students. Please note that numbers will be capped for time management purposes, and unregistered students will be unable to perform. Highlights of these recitals will appear in future editions of Cornerstone.

Round 7 Wrap - All games cancelled due to unplayable fields
It seems like our Touch teams will never get a game, with yet another drenched week. The incessant rain last week saw the entire QGSSSA Round washed out, so these games won’t be rescheduled. This week the Open, Senior A, 10A, 9A, 8/9B, 8A, 7A and 7B teams are due to play Moreton Bay College at White’s Hill Reserve, Camp Hill, with the Senior B and 8B teams playing St Margaret teams at Windsor Park, Windsor. With more rain forecast, though, please watch the St Peters App for Notifications and Cancellations. Next week is our final week for the season. We are planning rescheduled games for the 8A and 10A teams against St Aidan’s on Monday 23 May at Ambiwerra Sports Fields, Corinda; a rescheduled Round against Brisbane State High on Tuesday 24 May at the University of Queensland and then our final games on Friday 27 May against St Hilda’s at the Gold Coast (due to Kaleidoscope, the 8As will have already played this game and 8Bs have a Bye). Please note, that, due to the rescheduled games, there will be no training for the 8A and 10A teams on Monday, and no training for the Opens and Senior As on Tuesday of next week. We are praying that the girls will have the opportunity to play a few more games before the final whistle is blown for a very soggy, Season 22.
Please CLICK HERE for details of the Round 8 Draw v Moreton Bay College for this Friday afternoon/evening – The draw can also be found on the St Peters App.
Tuesday evening saw the first of the Brisbane School Girls Rowing Association competitions for 2022. The girls travelled to Somerville house to compete in the Indoor Rowing Championships. Congratulations to Jess M who achieved a second place in the Year 10 individual 1000m event.
On Water training resumption
On water training has resumed this week for all rowers as per the weekly schedule. Saturday will also follow the previously published schedule.
Ergometer and Sculling Trials
Trials, within the context of the Rowing Program, are undertaken based on three factors: ergometer times, sculling times, and attendance/attitude to training. These trials are completed at the BSRA regattas, which are held on a Saturday in Term 3, each age group is divided into divisions (i.e. Year 8, Division 1, 2,3 etc). The goal of these trials is to place each girl into appropriate crews that will be competitive within these divisions at regattas.
Upcoming trials -
Saturday 21 May, the girls will complete their first sculling trial on the Brisbane River. All girls will complete these trials within their normal scheduled Saturday training times – can I please ask families to ensure that girls are present to complete these trials.
If girls are absent and do not complete these trials, it makes it impossible to correctly place girls into appropriate crews. As always if there are unforeseen circumstances, these will be taken into account.
Boys Season Celebration and Girls Season Launch | New Rowing Boat fleet Blessing – Saturday 21 May
Between 4pm-6pm on Saturday 21 May the Rowing community is invited to the 2022 Boys Season Celebration, Girls Season Launch and the New Boats Christening.
Drinks will be available to purchase for a gold coin donation, as well a small number of pizzas for the students to enjoy. Families are asked to please bring a plate of finger food to share for this occasion.
We look forward to celebrating together with the whole community at this event.
Girls Rowing Camp
The Rowing Camp is an integral event for the girls in a number of ways. Firstly, as a shed and community building event, the time spent away at these camps is generally a highlight as it a fantastic team bonding time where girls are able to spend time and develop lifelong friendships, not only within their year level but from all year levels. Secondly as an important fitness and technical foundation for the crews which leads into the BSRA regattas which start a few weeks after.
Camp this year is between the 18-24 June in Bundaberg.
All transport, accommodation and food will be organised for the girls with forms and costs are currently being finalised. Could I please ask families to put these dates in the diary for the girls to attend.
Thank you girls! Another fantastic week of RG training!
Group A, Group B, Yr8 and Yr7 Groups all worked on learning their routine sequence (to music) with both Hoop and Ball apparatus. The Hoop is a difficult apparatus, so the girls should be proud of all their efforts – well done girls 😊
There were a few absences this week, so we’ll now announce performance groups at next week’s training.
Please be mindful of keeping the same time each week for training. This will help with coaching and team routines.
Date Claimer: QGSSSA RHYTHMIC GYMNASTICS CHAMPIONSHIPS – FRIDAY 5 AUGUST (Week 4, Term 3). The 2022 Rhythmic Gymnastics Calendar can be found on the St Peters App
As always, keep up the great work, keep practising and keep smiling.
