I am always grateful that I had the opportunity to spend several of my childhood years growing up in Malaysia. My formal education began in Malaysia but I gained an even broader and deeper education through exploring the country and countries close by and through playing happily with my Malaysian, Chinese and Indian neighbourhood friends. I believe it was this experience that gave me a thirst for travelling overseas to learn about the array of cultures present in our world; it also spurred on my goal to visit a country for each year of my life. While I am a little short of my goal currently, I do hope to catch up now that overseas travelling has opened back up!
In my talks with staff and students this year, the appreciation for the rich cultural diversity present within our St Peters Springfield community has been a stand out theme.
Only last week, students commented to me: “I really like the cultural diversity in our school” and “Multiculturalism makes this school a unique and special place.” A staff member said: “I’ve been walking through the College today delighted at the diversity of cultures expressed by modes of dress” for the Secondary Years Cultural Dress Day.
Our community is distinctive in that it represents over 20 nationalities proudly within its student body.
One of St Peters Springfield’s Strategic Intents is to ‘inspire our students to be responsible and engaged global citizens and stewards through the provision of curricular and co-curricular programs, experiences, connections and opportunities that promote global competence and intercultural respect and understanding.’
Our curricular programs build global and international-mindedness. Last week, we connected with our sister school in Hong Kong, Sharon Lutheran School, in Year 5 classes via an online video call. Due to COVID school closures, our cross-cultural connections have needed to pause for two years so our Year 5 students are very excited about resuming this connection.
Our relationship with the school started in 2015 since we wanted to grow our connections with Asia, to build upon the Australian Curriculum Cross-Curriculum Priority: Asia and Australia's Engagement with Asia. There are many similarities between Sharon Lutheran School and ours - the cross on the side of the buildings and coloured levels. And, there are many differences to learn about. Each class has shared information about their school, country, celebrations and festivals and leisure activities. Our goal through these sessions is to broaden students' understanding of the world and one of our closest neighbours.
Last week, our Secondary students had another opportunity to celebrate the cultural diversity present within our school community through the decorating of Pastoral Care room doors and wearing of cultural dress. This was a 2022 initiative of our College Captains. The students did an amazing job and many discussions about culture followed.
This week, we are focusing on National Reconciliation Week at St Peters Springfield. The theme this year is ‘Be Brave. Make Change’ – it is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements and to explore how we can contribute to achieving reconciliation with Australia’s Indigenous peoples. Our students have enjoyed painting a long rainbow serpent display which is now located in the Hub and have participated in Assemblies, Chapels and Pastoral Care activities focused on reconciliation.
Recently, St Peters Springfield has learned that we have successfully been granted funds to create an Indigenous Garden with a Yarning Circle next to our Concourse via the Lendlease Junior Landcare Grant. Teachers and students will work on this important project, planning out and creating the garden over the coming months. We are excited to further promote intercultural respect and understanding for our College’s and country’s Indigenous peoples through this initiative.
It's wonderful to walk into our Reception each morning to be greeted by the new decals on our Reception desk with ‘Hello’ written in a variety of languages, reflective of the languages of our students’ cultural backgrounds. At St Peters Springfield, we will continue to find ways to appreciate the cultural diversity within our community which make this a truly unique and interesting place to be. It is our hope that when our students say ‘Goodbye’ to St Peters, they will do so with open hearts and minds and a willingness to explore the amazing cultures and beauty present in our world.

Reconciliation Week
(Christ) is our peace; in his flesh he has made both groups into one and has broken down the dividing wall, that is, the hostility between us. Ephesians 2:14 NRSV
Have you seen a cockatoo lately? A sulphur-crested white cocky, or what about the rarer black cockatoo?
For numerous indigenous peoples throughout Australia, the black and white cockatoos are totem animals for differing social groups and clans.
This is true for the Guugu Yimithirr people of far north Queensland. George Rosendale, a former elder and Lutheran pastor from the Hopevale community, tells the story of the black and white cockatoo and how they reconciled their differences. He writes;
The cockatoos were brothers who lived long ago. When they became men, the black cockatoo realised he was different. He did not like it. He became very angry with his father because he made him black. He decided to change the way things were. One day he was found by his brother, the white cockatoo, sitting under a tree, very upset and angry. ‘What is the matter with you, my brother?’ he asked.
‘I’m very angry with my father,’ he answered. ‘He made you white and he made me black. I don’t like it. I’m going to change my colour.’
He went to his uncle, who lived over the range. He asked him for honey and clay. His uncle gave him what he wanted. He took the clay and made it into powder; then he put the honey all over himself and sprinkled the powered clay over the honey. He looked at himself and said: ‘Now I am like my brother.’
His grandfather, the storm bird, was very angry with the foolish brother. He called the North wind to bring rain. The monsoons came, and it rained and rained and rained, and washed all the clay and honey away.
Later, his brother found him again sitting under the tree, angry, sad and sorry for himself. He said, ‘My brother, you did a foolish thing to hurt our father. We are his sons. He made both of us and he loves us. Come on, be happy! Our father loves you just as much as he loves me. We both belong to him. Be happy and rejoice.’
To this day, the black cockatoos are happy. They even sing while flying and eating.
This sounds very much like another well-known biblical story, the parable of the lost or prodigal son. In this gospel story of Jesus, two differing sons need reconciliation. Reconciliation because their family relationships are broken and fractured. There is anger, there is hurt to the Father and to each other. Forgiveness and restoration are needed.
Reconciliation is needed in our lives too. As humans we are good at creating barriers between differing peoples. However, barriers ultimately lead to tension, hostility, and worse. We only need to think of cities and nations that have physically built walls to exclude differing peoples. Differences between people exist, but belonging to a Lutheran school community, we know that the barriers we create between people can be washed away with God. Like the cockatoo who wanted to change its colour, we are washed clean by God, who loves us equally.
Through Jesus, we are made one, no black or white, no male no female, no Jew no Gentile. We are all equally loved and reconciled to one another and to God. We are given peace and common ground that is beyond the differences and the divisions we develop.
Several years ago, Aboriginal Christian leaders in Australia acknowledged that: “Through Christ, we have the strength to be reconciled to each other and to the land. This means we are involved with Christ in the process of breaking down the barriers that divide Australian Aboriginal peoples from each other and from other Australians in this land.”
In our schools, in our family relationships, in our communities, in our country, Christ is calling us, inviting us to be part of the healing he offers, reconciliation between black and white. How can we walk, as well as talk, reconciliation in deliberate ways?
Lord Jesus, you are the one who calls and invites us into reconciliation. The reconciliation you accomplished on the cross. Heal the divisions and hostilities in our land between people of different race, colour and religion. Forgive us for the barriers and separations we create and give us new ways to put our words of reconciliation into real-life tangible action. In your name, we pray. Amen.

Gideons International Visit
Secondary Students were blessed with a visit from Dr Gordon Timbs at Chapel last week to distribute a copy of the New Testament with Psalms and Proverbs to Year 7 students. Gideons offer the Scriptures to all Year 7 students across the country.
Dr Timbs is 89 years old but shares the good news with more energy than most people half his age! In his senior years he delights in representing the Gideons to offer a message of hope in Jesus to younger generations. He urged students to download the Gideons App so they can access the Scriptures on their devices wherever they are. Especially, he urged the students to use the index in their Red New Testament which offers places to look for help in times of need.
Dr Timbs has been visiting St Peters Springfield since its inception in 2008 and is a long-standing supporter of our College.
Thank you to Dr Timbs!

Beautiful ANZAC Day Poppy Bowl
We received a lovely gift from Charis Mullen State Member for Jordan this week. Ms Mullen presented our school with a special handmade poppy bowl as a commemorative gift for ANZAC Day which we have placed in Reception.
The bowl was lovingly crafted by the talented instructors and students at Bellbird Art Centre, a small business, tucked away in Greenbank, that offers a wide range of ceramics classes to the public. We thank Ms Mullen for her wonderful gift.
Wellbeing on Wellness Way
Wellbeing on Wellness Way
This week I’d like to bring your awareness to Justin Coulson’s Lighten the Load article.
It hit me hard this week.
I have two children and it’s so hard to be ‘present’ when so much else is going on in our lives. As parents, we have jobs, chores, dinners, lunches, exercise, our own wellbeing and that of our families to organise and it can be hard to slow down, and be present.
But it’s so important.
We are the very best role models for our children – and we need to slow down and offer them our presence so we can give them the gift of being present too.
If you haven’t yet signed up to Happy Families, please do.
Take care, Sarah
Lighten the Load
Your little children don’t say “I had a hard day. Can we please talk about it?”
They say, “Will you come and play with me?”
Read that again… slowly. Make sense?
(Big kids probably don’t say anything at all. That’s ok, so long as we’re aware of what it means.)
The most useful thing we can do is offer our presence.
“Do you want me to stay, or do you want some space?”
Check in. Be present. Play. If they’ve had a hard day, this is what changes the game for them.

Kids Benefit from Deep and Consistent Engagement – Part 4
With increasing teacher shortages and facing limited budgets, some schools are looking to non-profit organisations to purchase student instruments and provide teacher training. We at St Peters are fortunate to have a good supply of student instruments and well trained teachers and tutors to ensure that students are provided with opportunities to participate in music learning.
Researchers will continue to untangle some of the reasons behind why music learning is so beneficial to students – but know enough to conclude that listening to music or writing a song for a class project only begins to scratch the surface. To get maximal brain benefits, students should actively engage with music by learning to play an instrument or studying voice, preferably in a group setting. The evidence is strong enough to recommend music education as a discrete class for all children – and across the grade levels – as a critically important investment.
Or as Professor Nina Kraus states, “Music should be a part of every child’s education”.
Private Tuition Recitals
Held at the end of each semester, Private Tuition Recitals are an opportunity for students to showcase their learning to family and friends. With the growing numbers of students receiving Private Tuition, the Recital series moved to hosting 4 concerts, involving over 100 performances. Each recital showcased a mix of achievement levels, from beginners to more advanced. For several students, the recitals were their first ever public performance.
Thanks to Benfasheh G and Taashya P, who compered the recitals.
Audience members are to be commended for the friendly and supportive way they received each performer, enabling this to be a positive experience for everyone.
Thanks to Ms Alison Pomerenke, Ms Celine Crellin, Mrs Kathy Wilson and Ms Sharon Johnson. These tutors were able to attend the recitals to support their students. Thanks also to Mrs Mardi Doyle and Ms Sally Grennan for organising and facilitating this event.

AUTUMN FIXTURES
Autumn Fixture for Season 2022 has come to an end and what a challenging season it has been for our Basketball, Football & Touch girls. With the volume of rain received over the seasons, many training sessions were cancelled and due to venue closure, many Football & Touch games were also unable to proceed. We thank all the girls involved, thank you for representing our College and persevering each week as there were many disappointments along the way. These sports would not be possible without our coordinators who have done a great job, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Annie George and Belinda Byrne, our Touch Coordinators, Tim Arnold, our Football Coordinator, and I have had a great team supporting me with Basketball. They have done an amazing job supporting the girls and keeping them up to date with so many cancellations and changes along the way, I am very grateful for all the work you have done. Thanks also to our amazing coaches for giving the girls the opportunity to continue to improve and develop in the Sports they love.
QUEENSLAND INTERMEDIATE VOLLEYBALL SCHOOLS CUP
Last weekend nine of our Year 10 Volleyball girls represented St Peters at the Queensland Intermediate Schools Cup in Toowoomba. The team played in the honours division for the first time and finished seventh out of nine teams.
This was their first competition for the year, and it was great preparation for the QGSSSA season. It was pleasing to see the team culture and with their great attitude they all had loads of fun and improved greatly throughout the tournament.
VICKI WILSON PRELIMINARY TOURNAMENT
Well done to our Senior and Junior Teams who have qualified for the Vicki Wilson Final Series which will be played in Term 3. Both teams headed to WDNA in the wind and with depleted teams due to injury and illness and toughed it out to win through to the Final Series. Our Junior team who lost one game in the minor rounds, finished second in their pool and went on to defeat St Peter Claver 12-2 in the playoff game. Our Senior team went through undefeated, finishing top of their pool and won the playoff game against IGGS 7-5. In tough conditions, our girls did amazingly well and represented St Peters with pride.
A big thank you to our coaches Trace and Patti, and Larika for your support, thanks also to the parents for helping with scoring on the day.
DATE CLAIMER: VICKI WILSON FINAL SERIES – Saturday 6 August - Monday 8 August
WINTER FIXTURES - NETBALL, VOLLEYBALL, HOCKEY & TENNIS
Training for all Winter fixture sports is underway.
It is important to watch for emails from your sport coordinator with details of trials and training.
Training schedules will be placed on the St Peters App as soon as they are finalised.
Last Friday afternoon we headed down the highway to take on St Hilda’s for the final round of the 2022 season. After sitting in traffic for 90 minutes, the afternoon began with a special Reconciliation Round ceremony where our girls donated a gold coin to the St Hilda’s charity of choice Gunawirra, in return the girls were presented hair ribbons in the Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander colours.
With the courts busting with colour, our depleted teams due to illness & injury did amazingly well. Our Open team, Senior A & 9A teams coming away with great wins, our 10A team with five players went down but fought hard to the end. Our two Year 7 teams may not have come home with wins but the improvement from the start of the season was so pleasing to see.
Well done girls, we look forward to a more normal 2023 season and we must thank our amazing team of QGSSSA Basketball coaches, they are a great team, we thank them for their work this season. Thank you also to all our parents for your support throughout then 2022 season.
Round 9 Wrap - All games cancelled due to unplayable fields
True to form our final round of QGSSSA Touch Football on 27 May was cancelled due to rain-soaked fields. It’s truly been a disappointing Season but, Touch Football women won’t let a little bit of weather keep us down, Season 2023 here we come! The 7A, 8A and Opens did finish the season with rescheduled games against Brisbane State High School on Monday, and were valiant in defeat. We finish the season with only a few teams having played five games out of nine, but most playing only four. Despite this, and limit training opportunities in Term 2, most teams finished in the middle of the ladder. Our 7Bs, though finish 2022 undefeated and joint Premiership winners with Brisbane State High School. Congratulations girls, we’re so thrilled for you.
Well done to all the QGSSSA Football teams on a fantastic season. It has been tricky navigating flooding rain, COVID-19, influenza, along with any injuries that occur during season. The girls have been fantastic in staying committed to the season despite all the interruptions. Round 9 was no exception to this, being called an abandoned round due to field damage right across Brisbane from last week’s rain. As it was the final round of the season, we managed to get some in-house games going on the UQ synthetic fields. It was great to see the girls working together in teams comprising of players across all ages. Luckily, the sun came out towards the end of the week, allowing us to hold the 2022 Old Scholars Cup match on Sunday. The game saw the Open girls get their revenge on the Old Scholars from last year, winning the match 3-2. Thank you to parents, players, and coaches for all your support throughout then 2022 season. I hope to see many of you at the upcoming Football Dinner.
