National Reconciliation Week—held every year from 27 May to 3 June—is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
What’s the significance of 27 May and 3 June?
On the 27 May marks the anniversary of the 1967 referendum when Australians voted to remove clauses in the Australian Constitution that discriminated against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
On the 3 June marks the historic 1992 Mabo decision in which the High Court of Australia recognised native title—the recognition that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ rights over their lands did survive British colonisation.
The day before National Reconciliation Week, 26 May, is National Sorry Day, which was first held in Sydney in 1998 and is now commemorated nationally to remember and honour the Stolen Generations.
What is reconciliation in relation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples?
At its heart, reconciliation is about strengthening relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous peoples, for the benefit of all Australians.
For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, Australia’s colonial history is characterised by devastating land dispossession, violence, and racism. Over the last half- century, however, many significant steps towards reconciliation have been taken.
Reconciliation is an ongoing journey that reminds us that while generations of Australians have fought hard for meaningful change, future gains are likely to take just as much, if not more, effort.
Why is National Reconciliation Week important?
National Reconciliation Week provides a focus for working towards our goal of a just equitable and reconciled Australia.
National Reconciliation Week is an ideal time for organisations, schools, universities, community groups and workplaces to advance understanding of reconciliation within their own places and their own lives. National Reconciliation Week provides a focus for working towards our goal of a just equitable and reconciled Australia
It began as a Week of Prayer for Reconciliation in 1993, supported by Australia’s major religious groups. Three years later it evolved into National Reconciliation Week under the guidance of the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation (now Reconciliation Australia).
How can I or my group or organisation get involved?
Visit the Reconciliation Australia website for more information and to discover what activities and events are taking place in your local area during National Reconciliation Week. On a personal level, you can think about what you can do locally and take the time to learn about the rich Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures that exists in Australia.
And, importantly, find the time to talk with your family and friends about why it’s important for all Australians to build respectful relationships with each other, and especially with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Continuing Enrolment 2025
Dear Parents, Guardians, and Caregivers
We wish to assure you that planning at the College is well underway to ensure effective educational programs, staffing, and administration at our school in 2025. To assist us with finalising details it is important that the College is aware of our expected student numbers.
My child will continue as a student at St Peters Springfield in 2025
There is no requirement for the families of students who will remain at the College in 2025 to contact us. Unless the Head of Springfield or Enrolments Office receives specific written advice from you that your child is leaving at the end of 2024, we will assume your child’s enrolment will continue and as such, their place at school in 2025 is secured. Families who will remain at St Peters into 2025, therefore, do not need to take any action.
My child will leave St Peters Springfield at the end of 2024
In the first instance, we would welcome your feedback and the opportunity to discuss why your student is not continuing. We understand that some circumstances or family plans cannot be changed, but sometimes we can assist in serving you and the community better by discussing your reasons for leaving.
If you intend for your child/ren to cease their enrolment at the College at the end of 2024, we wish to remind families that written notification is required one term in advance. Whilst we would very much appreciate your advice as soon as you are able, the final date for acceptance of notice before families are required to pay one term of fees in lieu of notice will be Monday, 30 September 2024.
If you have any questions regarding continuing or new enrolment with St Peters, please contact the Enrolments Team by email at s.enrolments@stpeters.qld.edu.au, or by phone at 3470 3888.

Primary Years
Becoming Primary Years Programme (PYP) Accredited
As we continue our journey towards becoming an accredited Primary Years Programme (PYP) school, it is essential to delve into the heart of the PYP framework: Concepts. These key ideas form the backbone of our curriculum, guiding our students to deeper understanding and fostering their ability to think critically and globally.
Concepts in the PYP are broad, powerful ideas that transcend subject areas and time. They are the ‘big ideas’ that help students connect what they learn in school to the world beyond the classroom. The PYP framework identifies seven key concepts:
Form: What is it like?
Function: How does it work?
Causation: Why is it like it is?
Change: How is it changing?
Connection: How is it connected to other things?
Perspective: What are the points of view?
Responsibility: What is our responsibility?
Why are Concepts Important?
Concepts are crucial in the PYP because they:
Promote Depth of Understanding: Instead of merely memorising facts, students engage with ideas that require deeper thinking and analysis.
Encourage Transfer of Learning: Students can apply their understanding of concepts across different contexts and subjects, enhancing their ability to connect new learning with prior knowledge.
Foster Inquiry and Curiosity: By exploring concepts, students ask questions, seek answers, and develop a lifelong love for learning.
Develop International-Mindedness: Concepts encourage students to consider multiple perspectives and understand the interconnectedness of our world, nurturing global citizens.
How Do We Use Concepts in Our Curriculum?
In our classrooms, concepts are integrated into units of inquiry that span various subjects. For example:
In Literacy a unit exploring the concept of ‘Perspective’ might involve reading stories from different cultures and discussing how characters' viewpoints shape the narrative.
In Science, a unit on ‘Change’ could investigate the life cycles of plants and animals, encouraging students to observe and document changes over time.
In HASS, the concept of ‘Responsibility’ might lead to projects on community service, where students identify local issues and devise action plans to make a positive impact.
Parents as Partners
We encourage parents to support our conceptual approach at home by discussing these big ideas with their children. Ask open-ended questions like, "How do you think this works?" or "Why do you think this happens?" to stimulate curiosity and deepen understanding.
Looking Ahead
As we move forward, our commitment to using concepts in the PYP will continue to shape our teaching and learning. By focusing on these key ideas, we prepare our students not just for academic success, but for a life of thoughtful inquiry, critical thinking, and responsible action.
Together, let's inspire our students to explore, understand, and connect with the world around them through the power of concepts.

The Heart of Lutheran Education: Service Learning
At the core of Lutheran education lies a deep commitment to nurturing not just students' minds, but also their hearts and souls. Service Learning, the integration of community service with academic instruction, is a powerful expression of this holistic approach to education. By engaging in meaningful service work, students develop empathy, social responsibility and a deeper understanding of their role in creating a more just and compassionate world.
Service Learning is rooted in the Lutheran tradition of faith active in love. It encourages students to put their beliefs into action, serving their neighbours and communities with humility and compassion. Through hands-on experiences, students gain invaluable life skills such as problem-solving, teamwork, and leadership, while also developing a sense of civic engagement and global citizenship.
Moreover, Service Learning fosters a deeper connection between academic concepts and real-world applications. When students apply their knowledge to address genuine community needs, their learning becomes more relevant, engaging, and transformative. They gain a deeper appreciation for the complexities of social issues and the importance of using their talents and resources to make a positive impact.
We are continuing to develop our Service Learning framework across our college at Springfield to ensure our students have opportunities to engage in authentic Service Learning. To aide this, we are strengthening our partnership with local organisations. We are re-establishing our relationship with AVEO Retirement Village Springfield, where students will have the opportunity to serve the needs of our neighbours within our Pastoral Care lessons. We look forward to sharing more information about the details of this partnership soon.
Shave for a Cure at St Peters Lutheran College Springfield
St Peters Lutheran College Springfield is proud to embody the spirit of Service Learning through our annual participation in the Leukaemia Foundation's Shave for a Cure event. This year, the event will take place on Friday 14 June and our goal is to surpass the impressive $10,000.00 raised in 2023.
Shave for a Cure is a powerful initiative that raises funds and awareness for blood cancer research and support services. By shaving, cutting, colouring, or donating their hair, our students, staff and community members demonstrate their solidarity with those battling these life-threatening illnesses. It is a tangible way to put our faith into action, embodying the values of compassion, love and hope that lie at the heart of Lutheran education.
We invite our entire community to join us in this meaningful endeavour. Whether by sponsoring a participant, volunteering at the event, or simply spreading awareness, every contribution makes a difference in the lives of those affected by blood cancer.
Together, we can exemplify the transformative power of Service Learning, making a lasting impact on our community and the world around us.
If you would like to donate towards this important cause, please visit our team page here:
You can choose to donate to any Year Level page within our St Peters team.

St Peters celebrated Reconciliation Round with a vibrant showcase of culture and community. The Welcome to Country, smoking ceremonies and dance performances by First Nations students, alongside Uncle Gav, created an enriching experience. Both the Rugby First XV on Tuesday and the Football Focus Round on Saturday saw excellent attendance from students, parents and Old Scholars, making the events truly memorable. With St Peters being a rich cultural tapestry it was fantastic to celebrate our Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander students and pause to consider the continued work towards reconciliation, to work together for a shared future of equal opportunity and equality of outcomes.
On Wednesday May 29, St Peters shone at the AIC Cross Country Championships, finishing fifth on aggregate with podium finishes in three age groups. Highlights included students achieving personal bests and those who ran to support their teammates, overcoming injuries, illness or first-race nerves. This embodies the essence of Cross Country, where students compete not just against others, but with themselves, striving for excellence and pushing their limits. The spirit of resilience and camaraderie was truly inspiring.
A reminder to keep 11 June free for the Semester 1 Sports Awards. Invitations for award recipients will be sent out in Week 8. Student awards include Most Valuable Player, Coaches, Spirit, Player of the Year and Service to Sport.
Congratulations and Thank You

Football News
The boys' Football Focus Round was a successful event, with St Peters winning seven of the twelve aggregate results. Despite the initial rain, supporters came out in droves to cheer on the First XI. The game was tense, with St Peters creating more chances but struggling to convert these opportunities into goals. Unfortunately, Iona scored late in the second half, securing the three points. The overall strong performance across other matches highlighted the team's determination and skill, making it a memorable round despite the First XI's narrow defeat. Well done to all players and supporters for their efforts and spirit.
