We See Our Students
The size of our Prep-Year 12 school, currently approaching 700, creates an environment where WE SEE our students. We know them by name, we know their interests, strengths and potentials, we know when they are facing challenges and how to guide them in partnership with our parents and caregivers.
One of the things I have found unique to St Peters Springfield is that our students and teachers happily and confidently engage in conversations out on the Concourse and in the yard, moreso than I have ever seen in a school before. Parents and caregivers are also very keen to work in partnership with our teachers and staff. These connections, which foster transparency and care, are the perfect foundation for a flourishing school where students feel ‘seen’ and are provided a supportive, well-balanced quality education.
Aristotle said that, “Educating the mind without educating the heart, is no education at all.” The holistic education provided at St Peters Springfield looks beyond the classroom; it is about far more than good academic results. We aim to prepare our students for life beyond the College. We are focused on supporting the health, wellbeing and hearts of our students – every child should feel safe, engaged, supported and challenged to grow and flourish. In doing so, we equip our students with the capacities and capabilities to confidently adapt to an everchanging landscape where they can be empathetic towards others and contribute positively to our world.
Term 2 has been a time to provide many opportunities to shape the whole child – their minds and their hearts. Leadership and service are key aspects we wish to nurture within our students. It has been pleasing to see the growth in leadership capacity of our Year 6 students who completed a range of leadership workshops and are now wearing their leadership badges with pride. We thank those Year 6 students who represented us proudly this term at Parliament House. Meanwhile, our Year 12 captains and Senior cohorts have been working on initiatives such as Multicultural Week and the Push-Up Challenge to raise awareness of mental health issues via the Push for Better Foundation. In addition, our Senior Secondary students have organised initiatives to support our sponsor child, Alfred, who lives in the Philippines as well as our Australian World Service Village Partnership where we are helping to raise funds to construct a canal to bring fresh water to a community in Cambodia.
We have had another successful Community Focus Day, where students donned red across the College and raised funds for literacy intervention supports at a remote school and our own school during “Go Red for Dyslexia” Day.
It has been a wonderful term to see buddy systems starting up across the different year levels between older and younger students. This is one of the benefits of a close-knit, authentic Prep-12 College.
Nurturing our students in a spiritual sense is a fundamental part of the education here at St Peters Springfield. Students engaged in many special Chapel services this term, including special services around Reconciliation Week. Bibles were gifted during Chapels to our Prep students from Arise Lutheran Church which worships here on a Sunday and to our Year 7 students from The Gideons International Australia. Dr Gordon Timbs from Gideons has been presenting Bibles to St Peters Springfield secondary students since 2008, is 89 years old and still has such an energy about him.
Our students have had the opportunity to develop their love of music and performance through our growing Performing Arts program. Private Tuition is on offer at the College and over 100 performers were involved in recitals, showcasing their use of instruments and speech and drama skills. Students have been involved in many eisteddfods throughout the Ipswich area this term, with our College entering some new eisteddfods.
Supporting students’ physical health is also a key focus of the College. All students from Kindy to Year 12 ran the Cross Country, students have completed laps around the school for Running Club, there has been much activity on the oval for Auskick, our netballers have brought out some fancy footwork on the courts and our Rugby First XV boys have played some great games. These are but a few of the choices that have been available throughout the term.
Our students have continued to apply themselves to their studies this term. Some students and staff have faced health challenges and we commend them on their resilience and flexibility. Our rigorous academic program has been supported by a wide range of excursions to the Orion Library, the Australia Zoo, forests and gyms, to name a few. Camps for our Years 5 and 7 students have also helped our students to grow in terms of their character, confidence and connections.
We have so much to be thankful over the course of Term 2 – it has been such a privilege to nurture the minds, hearts and potentials of our students, your children, here at St Peters Springfield and to SEE your children develop and flourish each day! We can’t wait to see their continued growth in Term 3.
