Developing a Growth Mindset
Love challenges, be intrigued by mistakes, enjoy effort and keep on learning. Carol Dweck
Developing a growth mindset in our students is a strategic goal across all year levels at St Peters. Mrs Johnson, our school Counsellor, has visited our Primary classrooms to share strategies to develop a growth mindset which is then carried over into classroom lessons.
As mentioned in a previous article, our primary teachers are developing mathematical mindsets in their classrooms. At a recent staff meeting the focus was on celebrating mistakes in maths, which opens the way for more learning. Carol Dweck, an expert on growth mindset, tells parents in her workshops that it is important to communicate to their children that it is not impressive to get work correct as it shows they were not learning. Teachers are changing the message about mistakes. We look for many opportunities to share this message with our student community.
On Wednesday 31 July, our Primary students will be taking part in a show called Ned’s Mindset Mission. At a special Assembly, our visitors from the USA will introduce a cartoon boy named NED who is on a very important mission: to find his mindset. Throughout the performance our students will discover how to activate their growth mindset to overcome social, emotional and academic challenges.
Linked with this show is the Pay It Forward concept. We were fortunate to have this show come to St Peters from another school who contributed to the cost by selling mindset merchandise. We would like to do the same for another school. In Week 1 a letter will be sent home with more details about the show and the products on sale. They will be on sale for five days from the show date.
We look forward to watching the show so that the ideas we have been sharing with our student community over the past two years will be reinforced.
