I very much appreciate the middle of the year break and associated end-of-financial year. Often, with all the busyness that comes with Christmas, including some time with family, wrapping-up of the year that was and enormous amounts of planning for a new year, time for personal reflection and goal-setting can be limited. I like to use the time in the middle of the year for a "stocktake" of the previous 12 months, reflection upon progress and setting of goals for the coming year. This formed the basis of the message that I shared with staff at our devotion on Monday 8 July, when I formally opened Term 3.

My message focussed on verses from Jeremiah 29:11-13 and Mark 6:25-34, both of which emerged to me during my personal time of reflection and included the word "seek". From Jeremiah, “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart”, and from Mark, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Once again, in the busyness of the day-to-day it is easy for us to lose our focus, to stop working incrementally towards our goals, both as individuals and as a College. It is important to continually allow time for reflection and planning, but also not lose sight of the fact that we should be seeking our Father and his righteousness in the first instance, because there is a plan for us and our lives.

OUR STRATEGIC PROGRESS IN 2024

• PRIMARY YEARS PROGRAM (PYP)
  One of our largest ever strategic changes in the Primary Years began late in 2023 with the introduction of the International Baccalaureate – Primary Years Program. Six months later, we are proud to say that it is progressing well. Teachers are working hard to ensure that the transition is as seamless as possible for students and that value is added every day to the learning of every child. In Semester 2, we continue to train Primary Years staff in the use of Toddle (our planning and alignment tool) and students are planning towards their exhibitions of learning in Term 4.
  
• SECONDARY YEARS
  Our Secondary Years Teachers have engaged in Professional Learning Teams throughout Semester 1 as part of building their capabilities to orchestrate and retain student attention. This learning will continue into Semester 2 with a new focus around instruction.
  The Student Leadership portfolios, driven by our Year 12 Leaders throughout Semester 1, will be finalised throughout Term 3 as the Year 11 students go through the Leadership selection process as part of the transition to leading the College from Term 4.
  We also continue to build and strengthen our partnerships with external organisations, in particular with the University of Queensland (UQ), University of Southern Queensland (USQ), Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and Aveo Agreed Care.
  
• CORPORATE TEAM
  Mr Tim Green was employed by the College in January 2024 as the Operations Manager. An important role in the day-to-day running of the College, in particular assisting the Head of Springfield with matters of finance, compliance, HR, IT and managing corporate staff. Mr Green has been an exceptional addition to the Corporate team and shared services model for St Peters and continues to develop his role while serving the community.
  
• PARENTS AND FRIENDS
  Our strategic approach in Parents and Friends this year, formed with President – Nidhi Dhuldhoya, was to increase parent involvement and engagement with the College through the provision of events and activities. This was provided in Semester 1 through occasions such as the Primary Disco and Mother’s Day. In Semester 2, this will continue with Father’s Day, Grandparent’s Day and I’m excited to announce our first ever St Peters Springfield Christmas Carols and Christmas Movie event, further details to follow soon.

Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2019).

Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes:

• year of schooling
• category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional
• level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive.
  

This information assists schools to:

• formally recognise the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools
• consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools
• develop shared practices so that they can review their learning programs in order to improve educational outcomes for students with disability.

The NCCD provides state and federal governments with the information they need to plan more broadly for the support of students with disability.

The NCCD will have no direct impact on your child and your child will not be involved in any testing process. The school will provide data to the Australian Government in such a way that no individual student will be able to be identified – the privacy and confidentiality of all students is ensured. All information is protected by privacy laws that regulate the collection, storage and disclosure of personal information. OSHC Vacation Care went off with a BANG, the children enjoyed incursions like Ghostly Games, Lab Kids, Digital T-Shirts, Knitting, Bird Houses and Gems, Rocks and Crystals, while we also enjoyed an excursion to the movies to watch Despicable Me 4. Planning is in full swing for our next Vacation Care in September, so please keep an eye out for our booking forms in Week 7.

Year 4 QCCC Brookfield Camp

On Monday June 10, the Year 4 students set off on their first overnight camp at QCCC Brookfield. The students enthusiastically engaged in a variety of team building activities, including circus skills, archery, rock wall climbing, bush skills and team building skills.

During Circus skills, the students were hula hooping, juggling circus balls they had made themselves, balancing and spinning plates on sticks. They demonstrated their new skills by participating in a performance. Archery was a lot of fun and there was plenty of excitement for the ones who got the bullseye. Some of the students demonstrated no fear climbing to the top of the Rock wall climb, others were satisfied with climbing a few steps. Bush skills consisted of the student’s collecting sticks from nearby bushland for their campfire and then having the excitement of cooking and eating their damper. During the team building activity, the students worked in small teams or as a whole group to guide each other through various challenging courses. It was so great seeing them work together as a team. All students demonstrated a ‘Plus Ultra’ attitude and enjoyed their first time on camp together.

2024 Readers Cup Competition

In the last week of Term 2, eight Year 6 students ventured to Blair State School to participate in the highly anticipated 2024 Readers Cup Competition. These dedicated students spent several months reading five different books by five different authors. They then gathered during their lunchtimes to discuss the various themes and details of each book.

Competing against 28 other teams from various schools in the Ipswich District, our students demonstrated remarkable teamwork and literary knowledge. Between each round of questions, we were entertained by Kate Temple, whose book was part of the competition's reading list. Kate graciously spent time with our students and even signed a copy of her book for our library.

Our students worked hard throughout the very challenging competition, making both themselves and the College proud. Their impeccable behaviour and outstanding sportsmanship reflect the character of a St Peters student. A special congratulations goes to SPLC Team 2, who won one of the rounds and achieved an impressive 4th place overall.

St Peters Springfield is proud to share with you that this year we have introduced a new acknowledgement for students for their ability to care for others using their Head, Hands and Heart.

The ambassadorship is celebrated at a Termly celebration where the students will be presented with a certificate and a badge to wear on their uniform. This is an acknowledgement of the way they have modelled the Colleges’ values of care, dignity and respect to all. This ambassadorship will be awarded to one child per year level per Term from Years 7 – 12.

Students who receive this ambassadorship have demonstrated they have authentically used their God-given talents to shape the world around them in a positive manner. They have developed a benefit mindset, recognising, and responding to the needs of others and the needs of our planet. They have developed an ethic of service through being caring, open-minded, respectful, and reflective while developing greater levels of self-confidence, maturity and the insight of an emerging global citizen.

The trilogy of components is equally important and holds the same value.

Head: recognition of others’ needs (e.g.: often putting others needs ahead of their own)

Hands: sharing and connection with others (e.g.: forming strong relationships with others through their service)

Heart: ongoing reflection to learn and grow (e.g.: finding space in their life to want to do and be better)

Welcome back to another Term with opportunities for our performing artists to shine. We have several internal and external events that students will be preparing, so it is important that they are present for rehearsals and Private Tuition Lessons. We are delighted to welcome Mrs Lily Toalo, as a lower strings specialist in the Private Tuition Program and will support the Year 3 Strings Program. Lily comes with a wealth of teaching, composing, conducting and playing experience and we are blessed to have her join our team.

Lesson Cancellations

A reminder that four weeks Term time notice is required to cease lessons in the Private Tuition Program, and this request is to be sent in writing to Mrs Campbell, the Performing Arts Coordinator, for approval.

Sing Together

In the final week of Term 2, Dolce Voce participated in the combined schools Sing Together event. Our choir joined forces with students from seven other schools to form a massed choir of over 350 voices. The students learnt four new songs with esteemed conductor Jenny Moon and presented these, as well as a solo item from each school at the evening concert. This week we highlight some photos from this event.

State Honours Ensemble Program

From 5-7 July, Jun K was involved in this external workshop and performing opportunity offered at Griffith University Conservatorium of Music at Southbank. He worked with leading national and international conductors and alongside students from across the state, culminating in a concert on the final day. Thank you to Jun for representing our College at this event.

Cocurricular Rehearsals

Cocurricular rehearsals resumed this week. The Bands and Allegro and Cantabile Strings will be participating in the Beenleigh Eisteddfod on either 24 or 25 July so it is important that students are attending the weekly rehearsals and learning their parts, so that the tutors can shape the music in preparation for this event. Permission notes will be sent shortly as we are awaiting final schedule confirmation from the Beenleigh Eisteddfod.

Ipswich Junior Speech Eisteddfod

Year 6 students are in the final weeks of their preparation for the Ipswich Junior Speech Eisteddfod. Thanks to Mrs Kathy Wilson for her work and guidance of this initiative and we look forward to hearing all about their performance.

Welcome back to Term 3 which is another Term full of Sport for our St Peters students. A reminder that if students are using the Sports Bus before or after College they are to ensure that their names are on the manifest found on a student’s Microsoft Teams.

AIC Basketball, Rugby League and Tennis trials commence this Saturday 13 July. Please check communications to ensure students know where their trials are being conducted.

Similarly, QGSSSA Hockey, Netball, Tennis and Volleyball fixtures commence this week with St Peters taking on St Hilda’s. Again, please ensure that you are up to date with all communications being sent out.

Years 3-6 Running Club – starting Week 4

In Week 4, Running Club for Years 3-6 will start on Monday and Thursday afternoons from 2:30pm – 4:00pm in preparation of our Athletic Carnivals. Mr Brayne will coach these sessions on the school oval with a particular focus on Sprints, Middle Distance, Relays, High Jump, Long Jump, Shot Put, and Discus. Years 4-12 Running Club – concluding in Week 3

The Running Club conducted by Mr Brown throughout the year to this point will continue this week, but will be concluding in Week 3 of this term, the last session is on Thursday 25 July. This club has focussed on distance training since Term 1, through Cross Country season and will cease now that the athletics season is upon us and students have opportunities both with the Years 3-6 Running Club with Mr Brayne and the Track and Field Training listed below. We would like to thank Mr Brown, Mr Kirkham and Mr Gustafson for their involvement with students and conducting these sessions.

A reminder for all students in Years 4-12. Track and Field trainings are on offer every Wednesday and Thursday morning here at the Springfield campus. Trainings start at 6:15am and finish at 7:30am.

Prep - Year 3 Afternoon Sport

As we aim to offer more opportunities for Lower Primary students, we are asking for registrations for the Prep to Year 3 Athletics program.

This program will be run on a Monday afternoon from 2:30pm to 3:30pm and will be run by Mrs Marty Stolberg.

Cost of the program will be $100.00 for six sessions. Dates of the program are as follows:

Secondary Track & Field Carnival

On Friday 12 July, St Peters Secondary students will get to display their talents at the Secondary Track & Field Carnival. A reminder to families that this is a normal school day, and students are expected to attend. Students will travel to UQ St Lucia by bus, travel times are within school hours. Students are encouraged to wear their house shirts or sports uniform.

On Friday, students will go directly to their PC classes instead of Period 1 for Roll Marking.

I am excited to join St Peters as the Acting Girls Sport Coordinator for Semester 2.

For the past nine and a half years, I was the Head of Sport at St Aidan’s Anglican Girls’ School, where I worked to increase participation, improve performance and raise the profile of the sports program.

I look forward to using my experience to build on the strengths of the existing programs at St Peters and working closely with the dedicated staff in Sports House to create opportunities for all girls to enjoy and excel in their chosen Sports.

St Peters Western Swim Club has a total of 12 athletes (10 Australian, one New Zealand, one Fiji) who will be competing in Swimming at the Paris Olympics, supported by Head Coach Dean Boxall. This contingent is the largest of any swimming club in the country.

We wish our swimmers the best of luck as they prepare for the games.

We also acknowledge Torrie Lewis (2022) for being selected on the Australian Track & Field team for the Olympics.

Over the holidays St Peters entered four relay teams (two boys and two girls relays) into the QLD All Schools Country Relay Championships at Nudgee College. Congratulations to the relay team of Ava K (Year 10), Gemma D (Year 7) and Claire R (Year 8) who won the girls 15 Years & Under 3 x 3km race in an impressive time of 32:40.06.

Volleyball - Queensland Junior State Championships

Over the holidays, the Open QGSSSA Volleyball team competed in the Queensland Junior State Championships, held on the Gold Coast.

Congratulations to the girls who not only won their division, but also did not lose a set throughout the tournament. This was a great achievement and fantastic preparation for our Open team leading into our QGSSSA Volleyball season.

Rowing  

The BSRA (Girls) Rowing Camp took place for five days in the final week of the holidays. The girls travelled to Bundaberg Rowing Club in Bucca and completed an action-packed week starting with scull trials to finalise crew selections.

All the crews will race for St Peters in the BSRA Regatta season that commences on Saturday 20 July and concludes with Head of the River on Saturday 24 August. The girls trained two-three sessions per day, both on the water and some land training sessions during the week developing their technique and crew combinations to maximise their boat speed ahead of the first regatta.

There was also plenty of down time when the girls would hang out making bead bracelets, writing each other ‘warm & fuzzy’ notes and enjoying each other’s company. We held the Inaugural St Peters Rowing ‘Quadathlon’ where teams of girls competed against each other in a combined swim, bike, ergo, run race (each team member doing a leg). We held our ‘Minute to win it’ Games Night and our final night we held our ‘No Talent’ night where the girls dressed up to the theme ‘X’ in their year level groups.

The last morning at camp saw all crews take to the water in an Omnium regatta (handicapped starts) the final race of which had the 1st VIII take on the Coaches VIII for a 500m sprint. The Coaches took line honours and were very happy with themselves. All the hard work was complemented by a wonderful camaraderie – the Junior Shed got to know the Senior Shed girls much better, and we came together as a team ready to take on all the other schools in the BSRA.

Our 1st and 2nd crews commence their racing season this weekend at the South Queensland Schools Regatta this weekend at Wyaralong before kicking off their BSRA racing season the following week. We wish the girls luck as they take on the best in our region.

Boys Weekly Sport

As we gear up for the upcoming season, a range of Sports are holding training camps and matches to ensure our teams are well-prepared. Here’s a snapshot of our recent activities:

Basketball

Our Years 7-10 A teams played against Marist College during the student-free week, while the First XV held a training camp with matches against Gold Coast schools.

Track and Field

Holiday sessions at Mayer and UQ have kept our athletes in top form. A special Track & Field day camp at the GC Performance Centre is also set to further sharpen their skills.

Tennis

Boys participated in a Tennis Specific Athletic Development and Injury Prevention Clinic, led by a physiotherapist, during all holiday morning sessions.

Rugby League

We’re excited to announce the debut of Rugby League at St Peters this Saturday, with both Year 7 and Senior teams playing. The Focus Round against Villanova kicks off at 12:30 PM at Harts Road.

Important Reminders

With the trial round this week, it's crucial for players to attend all training sessions. Any known absences, such as Music lessons, should be communicated to the coach and coordinator. Please ensure your son adheres to the uniform guidelines, avoiding slides, Birkenstocks, Crocs, or open-toed shoes. Coaches and Sports house members will enforce these rules strictly, and repeat breaches will result in consequences.

Congratulations and thank you

• U13 Queensland Water Polo Selection: Eli B (Year 8), Rory, G (Year 8) and Sam H (Year 7). The boys competed at Nationals in Hobart over the holidays, with Eli and Sam going undefeated and Rory’s team placing 4th. Well done Boys!
• U15 Queensland Football Selection: Heeyul N (Year 9). Heeyul will compete at the National Youth Championship in Wollongong from 16-21 July.
• Queensland Volleyball Representatives: Konrad A (Year 8), Harry B (Year 12) selected from the Australian Junior Volleyball championships

Rugby League News

• Focus Round - Saturday 13 July at Harts Road Field
• Junior fixtures - 8:00am
• Senior fixtures - 12:30pm 
• Canteen operating throughout the day by the Rugby Support Group. The team needs your support by filling the grandstand!

For our St Peters sporting programs to positively develop and grow, it is paramount that our students attend training sessions for their chosen Sport, so they can improve and refine Sport-specific skills and build cohesion amongst their team-mates.

• If students are unable to attend some training sessions, it is vital that their absence is communicated to their coaches firstly, and also the respective coordinator/s.

Matchday expectations 

A reminder that all St Peters boys do need to be dressed correctly at both AIC training and at AIC games. All uniform items can be purchased from Shop45 or via School Locker, please refer to the website for opening hours. For matchdays enclosed footwear must be worn to games, no slides or Crocs are to be worn at St Peters or associated AIC schools.

Basketball

Correct Training and Playing Uniform Requirements

At Games – All St Peters AIC Basketballers must be wearing:

• St Peters jersey
• St Peters maroon PE/sports shorts
• Joggers must be worn at all times – No slides or thongs are to be worn at any time

Rugby League

Correct Training and Playing Uniform Requirements

Training – students must wear their ‘Program Shirt’ to their training session.

Games – students are to arrive at their game wearing:

• St Peters ‘program shirt’ and then get changed into their jersey
• Mouthguard is mandatory
• Long maroon football socks
• Joggers must be worn at all times – No slides or thongs are to be worn at any time

Tennis

• Students to wear full PE uniform with tennis hat to games. First IV to wear the First uniform presented at the start of the season.

Track & Field

• Students to wear the Track & Field singlet to all meets

ST PETERS STUDENT SPECTATORS ON GAMEDAYS

Please note, dogs are not permitted on campus to accompany spectators to watch Football or Rugby fixtures (service dogs permitted).

Should any St Peters student be attending a St Peters sporting event/game outside of normal College hours, it is expected that they are dressed in St Peters formal uniform. Should a student not be wearing the correct attire when attending a sporting event/game, they may be asked to leave the venue.

WET WEATHER AND CANCELLATIONS

With regards to wet weather and any unforeseen or potential cancellations of AIC sports, please ensure that you keep an eye out for notifications and alerts via the St Peters App. We will endeavour to keep everyone updated on both training cancellations and game day changes as the week progresses.
