Welcome to Term 3, another semester filled with excitement and new beginnings! We extend a heartfelt welcome to all our new students and their families who have joined our vibrant community of St Peters this term.
During the break, we made the Student End of Semester Reports available, offering a valuable glimpse into your child's learning journey. If you haven't done so already, it is important to talk with your children about their progress. In these conversations, it is significant to discuss the comments and feedback about effort, attitude, classwork and homework as the grade only provides one part of the overall learning picture.
As we commence Semester 2, students have a wonderful opportunity to reflect on their progress and set their learning goals for the latter half of the year with guidance from our caring staff. Many opportunities are provided in class to set goals, discuss study habits and work out homework routines to help our students strive for their goals. Your discussions at home around these elements are also greatly appreciated.
At St Peters, we pride ourselves on providing an extraordinary student experience that goes beyond the classroom. Our students can immerse themselves in a range of opportunities within the Arts, Sports, Debating, Service Learning and Leadership, or embark on exciting camps and also Ironbark adventures in Year 9. In this, our very first week of term, we are holding French Celebration Week where our students will be able to sample French food, dress up in blue, white and/or red on Friday, learn about the storming of the Bastille in French classes and partake in French activities during lunch breaks. We’ll end our week with our Secondary Athletics Carnival, located at the beautiful grounds of University of Queensland this year. Our Year 6 students are looking forward to their Canberra trip this term and learning about the history and culture of our country. Several grades will head out on camps this term. We look forward to hosting our Secondary Arts showcase: A Night on Wellness Way, later in the term as well as other Arts opportunities and presentations. Our Year 11 students will be commencing more intensive work in the area of Leadership as they start to look towards captaincy positions.
Through these remarkable experiences, our students not only appreciate the gaining of new skills and understandings but the deep bonds of friendship that form and the memories they create to last a lifetime. At St Peters, the Student Experience is a very special one and we invite you and our students to embark on this incredible journey with us.
As we start out on the adventure that is Term 3, I urge our fine young individuals of St Peters to set their sights high in line with our Plus Ultra, Ever Higher, motto and embrace their studies and all activities with purpose and determination.
To each and every one of you, my warmest wishes for an incredible term ahead.

Year 10 Students Ignite the Future
In the final week of Term 2 the entire Year 10 cohort was given the opportunity to participate in the Future Anything IGNITE program.
Future Anything is a company that aims in transforming young people’s passion and curiosity into innovative ideas that make their world a better place. Future Anything programs encourage young people to embark on their own journey of self-discovery; using entrepreneurship as a vehicle to empower young people with the knowledge, skills, support and partnerships to develop innovative ideas that solve problems.
Future Anything’s IGNITE program was a high energy, five day workshop that culminated in students pitching their own innovative, scalable and sustainable business solutions to a panel of judges in a showcase event. Students looked inward at personal passions and lived experiences to form teams that were united in tackling a common problem. They used design thinking methodology and cutting-edge entrepreneurial tools to ideate, prototype and business model their own business solution.
All groups presented their innovative idea in a preliminary pitching event. Students were pushed out of their comfort zones and thrived in this spotlight. Whilst all teams were impressive, we could only take five through to the finals. At the final event a great crowd formed and the Year 10’s were really excited and nervous at the same time. All five teams that presented changed their initial pitch and took on all the feedback that they received from the judges in the previous round.
‘Breazy’ were our eventual winners with their idea to provide everyone with access to clean air through the form of a mask embedded with algae.
‘It matters’ came a close second, they aimed to decrease stigma around mental health by designing t-shirts that start conversations and are specifically designed to cater for people with sensory issues.
Overall, the program was a success with all students loving the challenge and embracing the growth mindset that the program offers. It was another clear example of St Peters students going ‘ever-higher’ and ‘further beyond’, whilst being exposed to and increasing their 21st century skills that are so critical for future success.

A Cluster of Close Shaves, and One That Missed by A Very Long Way!
A bunch of brave students stepped up for shaves, cuts and colours at the first St Peters Lutheran College Springfield World’s Greatest Shave event on the last Friday of Term 2. Led by College Captain Adam V, this event aimed to raise funds for the Leukaemia Foundation for research into blood cancer and for support of those living with it. The only thing that was not a close shave was the fundraising target of $500.00. Amazingly, this total was exceeded by an exceptionally long way, reaching $10,812.00 and still growing!
The event was held to support Leukaemia sufferers. Students heard Adam’s passion for this cause stemmed from childhood visits to cancer patients in the hospital where his father Jack worked. Local resident and Princess Alexandra Hospital Nurse, Sherliee Biggs, shared with students her journey of living with Leukaemia for 20 years. St Peters teacher, Ms Caitlin Knight, also spoke of her diagnosis and treatment for Hodgkins Lymphoma, a form of Leukaemia, as a young adult. These brave women brought home to students the reason such fundraising efforts are so important.
Adam and his three younger brothers, William, Maxim and Callum led the way, with others following. Students willingly exchanged long locks for new looks, in a show of kindness and solidarity with those who lose their hair in the cancer treatment process. The ripples of goodwill continued to spread as the long hair from two girls, Sara Ayala and Macy Gates, was able to be collected to be turned into wigs for those who lose their hair. The event was supported by local hairdressers: Charlene and Asia from apaR Hair Studio, Augustine Heights; Christian from Lole’s Barbershop, Springfield Central; and Kacey from Bellbird Park, who all generously donated their time and expertise. Donations can be made on the Leukaemia Foundation’s website.

FIREBIRDS COACH REBECCA BULLEY VISITS ST PETERS NETBALL
There was a buzz around the courts on Monday as we welcomed the current Queensland Firebirds coach Rebecca Bulley. Bec a former Diamond who represented Australia in 42 international games playing WD, GD and GK ran two sessions working with our girls on specialist defence.
She broke down defence into:
Going for intercepts
One v one contested ball
A good body angle to position your head to see the ball
Big hands over every ball
Deny and delay opposition players next move
Bec spoke to the girls about her career where persistence and hard work were her trademarks. Bec was well known as a reliable defender playing in the ANZ Championships for a decade, holding the distinction of being the first player to win three ANZ Championships with three different teams, the NSW Swifts (2008), Adelaide Thunderbirds (2013) and Queensland Firebirds (2014).
Thank you to the Netball PSG for sponsoring these sessions.
Date claimer: Vicki Wilson State Championships – Friday 4 & Saturday 5 August
Week 1 of the holidays was a busy one for our Girl Rowers who attended the annual Rowing Camp at Bucca Weir. This was a fantastic week full of hard training and team bonding and all girls thoroughly enjoyed their time away. This camp is the perfect preparation for the start of our 2023 BSRA season. A big thank you to all the Coaches and our “Camp Mum and Dad” Nat and John Kenny for their tireless work organising and supporting the girls. Such wonderful opportunities for our rowers wouldn’t exist without their amazing work, the team effort is greatly appreciated.
Training Attendance
As we move quickly to the start of the regatta season with Regatta #1 on Saturday 22 July, it is important that families please ensure girls are attending all training sessions, particularly on the water, in preparation for racing. This training is the key to ensuring the girls enjoy their experience at regattas. Families are asked to please continue to communicate via email to Mrs Allard if attendance at a training session is not possible. Good luck to the Year 10 1st crew and the Open 1st VIII who will be participating in the 2023 South QLD Schools Regatta this Sunday 16 July.
BSRA Regatta 3# – St Peters Hosting Saturday 5 August

The hosting of this event is a large logistical undertaking facilitated by the Rowing Parent Support Group to ensure we take full advantage of this fundraising opportunity. Please could I ask all families to make themselves available to assist with bake sale items, lolly bags and drink donations the week before the Regatta and to plan to be at the regatta on Saturday 5 July to help.
