This past week, two of our staff members have chosen to take whole staff devotions on the concepts of gratitude and thankfulness. They have highlighted how thankful they are to be educators at St Peters Springfield, mentioning the delightful nature of our students, parents and caregivers, the collaborative and kind nature of our staff and the unique and special culture we have at our school where each person feels known, valued and cared for and where people can 'thrive'. There is much to be grateful for at St Peters Springfield.
In Term 3, many innovations and developments have been put into place which we know will continue to take our students and the connectedness of our community from strength to strength. We are thankful for the following advancements:
Moving towards the Candidacy phase of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme, a world-renowned and evidence-based curriculum framework; we have also had a successful first presentation to parents surrounding the PYP.
Strengthening resourcing for Chaplaincy and Ministry through the appointment of Chaplain Ben Lyons; Chappie Ben has been connecting with students and staff at Chapels, in classes and during breaks.
Chapel Band has also commenced and has had its debut performance at Secondary Chapels; it has been a joy to hear the students and staff sing and play together.
To promote Wellbeing and Care, our inaugural House Patrons have run many Inter-House Competitions; students have been engaging in academic competitions (trivia, public speaking), sport competitions and original House war cry competitions within the Secondary Years which has greatly increased House Spirit.
For our Secondary Years Athletics Carnival, students used the track and field at University of Queensland for the first time; a great atmosphere with increased House Spirit.
To promote Life-Wide Learning, we have built up our Performing Arts and Private Tuition programs; we have been treated to many Choir and Ensemble performances at Assemblies and lunchtimes on the Concourse and there were more than 90 students involved in the recent Private Tuition recital evenings.
Our eSports students have also been a part of a combined Rocket League team of Springfield and Indooroopilly students and have competed in the finals of the XP High School League Cup at the Ekka; eSports, a product of the College’s Innovation Fund, is gaining momentum.
Shaping our students to become Global Citizens, our students in Junior High have been focusing extensively on First Nation people’s connection to country in a new vertical elective called Cultural Studies, increasing our students’ intercultural understanding and respect.
With regards to advancing Environment and Learning Spaces, Stage 3B building of our Junior High Precinct is progressing well; we can now visibly see the walls going up.
It has also been wonderful to see our Secondary students making so much use of the Ipswich City Council’s sport oval adjacent to our campus for physical education activities, a facility that has more recently become available to our community and for which we are truly thankful.
To further engage and connect our community, our P&F did a tremendous job of organising the Brisbane Astronomical Society’s evening visit the College for some star-gazing; 200 people registered and attended to look into space with telescopes.
Developing a partnership with the University of Southern Queensland; recently our Year 10 students attended a Student Experience Day that St Peters Springfield organised with the university to help students immerse themselves in an authentic university experience; students engaged in theoretical and practical activities with the Film/TV, Engineering and Surveying faculties.
We thank our students, parents and caregivers, staff and wider community for helping our College move from strength to strength towards our Strategic Intent and vision.
I wish all our families every blessing over the Spring holidays. I hope it is a time of relaxation and refreshment so that we can begin our final term of the year on the same strong trajectory.

A week to remember – reflections on our Canberra trip
It has been a big week! It's my catchphrase right now. 47 students, 5 staff, 1 bus. It was a cacophony, it was chaotic, it was cramped and crowded, it was Springfield’s year 6 Canberra tour. All Canberra tours can be described in these terms I am told. Everyone who asks how I am or how it was hears the same phrase, "It has been a big week!"
It was life-changing and thought-provoking. An interesting mix of experiences; juxtaposed together were places that memorialised the past, with those that cast our eyes to a hopeful future. While the War Memorial remembers the sacrifice of the veterans of yesterday, the Australian Institute of Sport prepares the athletes of the future. Our visit to the National Library immediately followed from new Parliament House. Or the one which struck a particular (dis)chord with me, a detour on the way home from Government House (where the Governor-General lives) past the SIEVX memorial. Our capital remembers our capital shapes.
My most meaningful moment was the SIEVX memorial. Hundreds of hand painted poles created by schools, community groups and churches around Australia. Each represents refugees, frightened and fleeing, mostly women and children who died on a voyage here in the early years of the ‘Stop the Boats’ campaign. Witnessing under the shadows of the flag of Parliament House and iconic Telstra tower, the memorial exists to remember the lost. It is a sacred place. There is no point in putting up a memorial to the Good Samaritan if you walk straight past.
As we left, I was asked to give a reflection. It can be hard to find the words in tragedy, but I was drawn to a key attribute of God – love for the powerless. Deuteronomy 10:18 shares a promise that God has for people like those whom the memorial honours:
God defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow and loves the foreigner residing among you, giving them food and clothing.
Much later in biblical history, in Hebrews, we hear this promise personalised and expanded to include people just like us. Select verses from Hebrews 13:
God has said,
“Never will I leave you;
never will I forsake you.”
So we say with confidence,
“The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.
What can mere mortals do to me?”
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
We hear that God is present with us and always will be. And when I stood in the memorial, I knew that God’s heart broke for these people lost at sea. The promise to never leave us nor forsake us is a promise that transcends death. Their lives were lost, but they remained in the fold of God. And while Canberra remembers and Canberra looks forward, and governments change, God is always the same, promising to be with us and to defend the cause of the powerless.

Arise is a Lutheran community that meets at St Peters, Springfield. It’s a place where you can come to know God’s love through Jesus, and find light and hope for your life, and connect with other families from St Peters and the wider community.
In our service you will hear God’s word, sing, pray and share in Holy Communion if you want to. There’s a message for the kids too.
On Thursday, the last day of the school term, we will be celebrating R U Ok Day. This is a date that we acknowledge every year to bring awareness to mental health and check in on our friends.
In 2009, Gavin Larkin, a bereaved son, and Janina Nearn, a television producer and reporter, collaborated to change the behaviour and stigma surrounding mental health. Together they developed and created R U OK? Day. Born out of the tragedy of his father's suicide in 1995, Gavin focussed the campaign on building the motivation, confidence and skills of the help-giver, the person who can have a meaningful conversation with someone who is struggling with life.
Today, it serves as a regular reminder to look out for each other, especially when it comes to addressing the mental health concerns of our young people.
Understanding the growing challenges related to mental health among young people is an important consideration. Anxiety, depression and self-harm are all causes for concern. Factors like academic pressure, social media, family dynamics and societal expectations are contributing to these issues. It's therefore crucial for parents and caregivers to take action early, remove the stigma around discussing mental health, and offer accessible support to address these issues and the wellbeing of their children.
R U OK? contributes to suicide prevention year-round by urging people to invest time in personal relationships and empowering informal support networks to identify signs of distress. We urge all families to take part, emphasising the value of genuine human relationships and reminding everyone to ask the important question, “Are you OK?”
Engaging in R U OK? Day activities goes beyond the classroom; it's a commitment to our students' overall development. By talking openly about mental health, schools create safe spaces where students feel understood, valued and supported. As parents and caregivers, you can contribute by fostering open conversations, normalising feelings and breaking down mental health stigmas. Participating in R U OK? Day promotes compassion and shows our dedication to the wellbeing of the entire school community, reaffirming that together, we can truly make a difference.
This Special Report via our School TV platform provides guidance on how to talk to your child about mental health and engage in meaningful discussions. We hope you take a moment to reflect on the information offered, and as always, we welcome your feedback. If this raises any concerns for you, a loved one or the wellbeing of your child, please consider seeking medical or professional help.

On Thursday 14 September, students are encouraged to wear ‘a touch of yellow’ – yellow socks, yellow ribbons, yellow earrings – so that we can celebrate this important message with our community.

Canberra Tour 2023
Students from our school recently undertook an education tour of the national capital. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $90.00 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.
Below are some highlights of the tour by our students.
"My favourite parts of Canberra were getting to know people that I hadn’t talked to before Canberra. I enjoyed seeing all of the artworks in the art gallery and the animals at the zoo. The best part of Canberra was visiting it with all my classmates." - Charlotte
"I really enjoyed going to Canberra. My absolute favourite thing was the tour of the Old Parliament House and getting to sit in the Senate House. This really made me think if I wanted to be a part of the Parliament." - Isobel
"When I was in Canberra, I really enjoyed all the phenomenal places we went to and all the beautiful places we saw. I really liked the National Canberra Exhibition and the War Memorial. The War Memorial was very interesting and had a lot of stories that show how people served our country to the best of their abilities. It had a lot of very astounding artefacts and amazing people. The walkway with all the names was nice to see and to be able to pay our respects to those who lost their lives for us. The unknown soldier who represented all the people who died was a special person and buried in a special place for people to honour the passing of others. The Canberra exhibition was so cool. I loved learning about the National Triangle that connects to Parliament House and two other points to make the National Triangle and all the apexes in the layout. It was very fun and educational. I really enjoyed my time there." - Mihika
"In Canberra I had an amazing time with the Year 6 cohort! We learnt about politics, and we met our Federal member of Blair, Shane Neuman, who talked about what he has supported in Blair. We also saw him in the House of Representatives, making a statement for 90 seconds." - Ethan N
"Canberra was very fun. For example, we visited the AEC and learned about how the voting system works. We went to Parliament House and participated in a role play and experienced how an actual meeting is run in the Green House also known as the House of Representatives. When we went to our accommodation, everyone was excited to find out who was in their room, and the food was great. Afterwards, people got excited to go to all the amazing places our teachers set for us in our itinerary. When this trip was over most people were sad to leave and others were happy so they could go back home and see their pets and family. The plane trips were fun too." - Adriel
"New Parliament was one of my favourite places. We were able to meet our electorate leader of Blair, Hon. Shayne Neumann MP and see him in action. He made a speech about one of his friends who was a super good hockey player they called him Mr. Hockey and he died a few months ago. We also saw a painting of every Prime Minister to run Australia. There was also a Lego recreation of Parliament House inside Parliament House and it was super cool. Topping everything off we got to pretend that we were in the House of Representatives and trying to pass a bill that every school should have an air-conditioner to cool down the schools in Australia." - Nolan
"Being in Canberra was an awesome experience. I cannot believe how much new information I learned while staying in Canberra. We learned all about how new laws are made by going through the House of Representatives and the Senate. We even got to see the Governor General's house! Canberra was so much fun and seeing all of the different sights was life changing." - Danica
"Canberra was an exhilarating journey in which we got to see and experience so many wonderful adventures. We got to go to Parliament House and see the Senate and House of Representatives. We went to the AIS and saw all the training facilities. We went through Questacon and experienced all its amazing activities. We even went to the zoo and saw all the fantastic animals! And that’s only a few places! Canberra was a blast and I know that every Year 6 student loved this camp and its memories." - Ashmita
"Canberra was one of the best school trips I’ve ever been on! We learnt all about our capital, why it’s important, all about its history and so much more. We explored a variety of different places, like the National Arboretum and the AIS, and everyone had lots of fun. It was an incredibly enjoyable and educational trip, however most of us were happy to go back home to see the smiling faces of our families. Canberra will be missed." - Coraline
"Canberra was amazing! Everyone was happy when we got there and going to Government House was a great idea to do on the first day. My favourite part was Questacon. We got to buy lots of stuff and I loved slipping down the slide and seeing real lightning in front of me." - Ethan S

“To uncover your true potential, you must first find your own limits and then you have to have the courage to blow past them.” – Picabo Street
Last weekend saw the final round of AIC Basketball and Tennis fixtures for 2023. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those involved in making our 2023 Basketball and Tennis season such a successful one. Many thanks to both Orhan Memedovski (Basketball Coordinator) and Lija Marshall (tennis Coordinator) for all their hard work each week in ensuring that both sports ran smoothly and effectively.
We would also like to extend our gratitude to all our coaches for their support, knowledge and mentoring of our boys. It would be remiss not to thank both the students who participated as well as their families who supported them each week throughout the AIC season.
Without the enthusiasm and support of all the above mentioned, such a successful sporting season of AIC sport would not have been achieved.
We would like to congratulate the following St Peters Tennis teams who completed the AIC Tennis season as undefeated winners.
1sts, 2nds, 3rds, 4ths, 10A, 10B, 9A, 8A, 8B & 7B
We must also congratulate our Basketball teams who despite most teams having tough seasons developed as the season went on and remained dedicated to training and games. We acknowledge the 1st V Basketball team who narrowly went down to Villa on the weekend by 4 points to just miss out on the 1st Basketball Premiership.
AIC Track & Field Update
The fourth and last of our AIC Track & Field Lead Up meets was scheduled for this Wednesday 13 September at The State Athletics Facility (SAF), Nathan. It was one of the last opportunities for our boys to practise and hone their skills before the 2023 AIC Track & Field Championships which will be held in the first week of Term 4. We are extremely proud of the work and enthusiasm our boys have exhibited so far and we are looking forward to seeing what they can achieve at the AIC Championships.
The AIC Track & Field Championships will be held on Thursday 5 October and Friday 6 October at the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre (QSAC), Nathan. We wish all our athletes the best of success as they finalise their preparations leading into these championships.

“Make your life about joy. Celebrate your big and little wins. Grow every day. Enjoy the first sip of your morning coffee, and the second and third and fourth. Find something to smile about on your commute. Give hugs often, compliment others whenever you can. Get inspired. Nourish yourself. Go outside and spend time in nature. Take chances. Make the art. Watch the sunrise. Climb the mountain. Because life is just too short and fragile to not live a life of chasing joy.” - Nikki Banas

WINTER FIXTURES - NETBALL, VOLLEYBALL, HOCKEY & TENNIS
Round 9 was another great round of Sport for our girls. Our Tennis, Netball and Volleyball teams enjoyed taking on St Hilda’s on our home venues, it was a wonderful way to finish the season.
Our Volleyball girls had an awesome season with the Opens, Senior A, Senior B, 10A and 9A teams all securing premierships. ‘Focus Round’ which doubled up as ‘Orange Round’ organised by the Open team was a huge success with an amazing amount of funds raised going to the Leukaemia Foundation. Well done to all involved.
Netball finished the season with 3 premierships, well done to the Senior A, Senior B and 10B1 teams.
Girls Tennis enjoyed a season of mixed results with special mention to the Junior girls who showed great commitment to training and games all season.
Our Hockey girls who finished with a bye due to St Hilda’s not having Hockey teams, their season was a good one also, the Open team finished 3rd place and the improvement in the Junior girls was fantastic to see.
And in what seemed like a blink of an eye, the final fixture in the 2023 QGSSSA Netball season was upon us. The last round coincided with home court advantage against St Hilda’s and the girls certainly took this opportunity to finish the season on a high note.
First up on Court 1 was the 8A team who started strongly and never let the opposition into the game to score their biggest win of the season. The 7A team took a narrow lead in the first quarter and played determined Netball to secure a very comfortable win. The 7B team continued their good form and the result was never in doubt going on to post a substantial win.
With three wins from three games St Peters went into Round 2 full of confidence. The Open team led the way and very quickly it was evident that they were the far superior team. Despite this, they did not become complacent but continued to work together to post a massive win and ensure the season finished on a winning note. From the first whistle, it was evident that the Senior B team would have to dig deep if they wanted to secure a win and share the Premiership. The game was all tied up in the first quarter before the girls were gradually able to edge away and go into the final quarter with a lead. The St Hilda girls certainly did not give up; however, the Senior B team maintained their composure to come away with the win much to the relief of Coach Cass. The 7C team were dominant from the start and held the opposition scoreless as they entered the half time break. The result was never in doubt and the team went on to score a comprehensive win.
The Senior A team spear headed the last round and showing the form that had wrapped up the premiership they quickly took control of the game and posted an easy win. The Senior C team were far too strong for their opponents and despite a number of positional changes went on to post a significant win. The 10A team were far too strong defensively which allowed the team to post a significant win.
As St Hilda’s was unable to provide a full contingent of teams there were also a number of internal games played on the day. With coaches joining in, all teams enjoyed the opportunity for one last fun game for the season. Special mention to the Development Squad girls who joined in and soaked up the game day atmosphere and the opportunity to play a game.
A fabulous way to finish the Netball season winning all nine games on offer and securing the only clean sweep of the season. Well done Ladies.
Congratulations to our Round 9 Award Winners - ‘Awarded to the girls that were the bubbliest on court!’
On Monday afternoon we had a wonderful turnout to celebrate the 2023 Netball season. Current Firebird player Emily Moore was our special guest and shared with the girls the ups and downs of her Netball journey. It was a fantastic insight into what is required to take your sport to the next level.
We celebrated our award winners (below), we acknowledged our three Premiership teams.
We thank our Netball PSG for their amazing work throughout the season, we are very grateful for our sponsors that are so generous and continue to provide a long sleeve tee to all girls in our program. We thank this season’s managers who were wonderful and special thanks to all our parents for supporting the girls to play Netball for St Peters.
Our program is what it is today because of our amazing girls and our team of coaches led by Tracey Bruce and Patti Farrell, we thank them all for a wonderful season.

Our Hockey season finished with a bye due to St Hilda’s not having Hockey teams. This gave us the opportunity to celebrate the 2023 season with a fun training session followed by pizza at St Lucy’s! Well done and thank you to all our Hockey girls and their families for their support, the season was an enjoyable one and our niche sport continues to flourish with new players coming in every year. Thank you also to our team of coaches for their work throughout the season.
After an excellent set of results in Round 9 adding to what was already a successful day of fundraising for the Leukemia Foundation, we have reached the end of another season of Volleyball for the girls at St Peters. This season, the program had five teams coming out on top with Opens, Senior A, Senior B, 10A and 9A with plenty of other success across the remaining six teams as well. Across each age group, there was plenty to celebrate with resilient comebacks and resounding wins that exemplified the Plus Ultra attitude. The program has gone from strength to strength on the back of plenty of passion and enthusiasm from the girls. These qualities have also been demonstrated by the parents time and time again through their support for the program and Parent Support Group and are deserving of a heartfelt thank you. A final thank you goes to the coaches, including Head Coach, Matt Young, for their time and expertise in refining the technique and gameplay of the volleyballers.

Last Saturday was the final weekend training session for our State Championship crews and we enjoyed a 32km round trip row from Toowong RC to Mandalay Park, Fig Tree Pocket. We had eight crews making up a wave of pink moving up the river in a flotilla. This is the longest distance many of our junior shed have ever rowed in one session and they all have a fabulous time. I wanted to give a huge shout out to our amazing Rowing PSG and specifically Claudia Matthews, for coordinating a delicious breakfast at the halfway mark and for her stellar breakfast service catering all year. The entire shed are grateful for her time and effort along with all the parents who have supported Claudia getting kids fuelled. We all head to Bundaberg for the Queensland Schools State Rowing Championship regatta this weekend and hope to finish out our season with some hardware to bring home.
Congratulations to all girls who have been part of the QGSSSA Track and Field season. It has been a big season and we thank all girls for their attendance at training and the meets in the lead up to the QGSSSA Track and Field Championships today. The College is proud of your dedication, effort and commitment to Track and Field and look forward to seeing the results of this work.
We wish you all the best and thank our Year 12s for their contribution to Track & Field over many years. Finally, we thank the parents for their ongoing support of the girls throughout the season. Without your efforts, girls would not be able to participate.
Good luck to all the girls competing, we know you will give your all and represent St Peters with pride!
