Creativity is one of the hardest thinking skills to acquire but certainly one of the most sought after in our world. It has been one of the most valued skills throughout human history and has also been called ‘the skill of the future’. Creativity permeates art, music and entertainment as well as maths, technology, business, science and many other areas of our existence.

So, what is it and why do we need it? Creativity is the ability to think ‘out of the box’, to bring something different and valuable to the world. We need it because it unlocks the mind so that we can see the big picture and engage alternative ways of thinking. This allows us to view and solve problems openly and with innovation and to adapt to uncertainty. In fact, it is a better predictor of an extended life span than intelligence itself!

Is creativity for a privileged few who are born with it? Certainly not. Research has found that it can be nurtured in anyone.

I am happy to say that creativity is alive and well at St Peters Springfield! It was a pleasure to talk with one of our Year 9 boys this week about his excellent artwork: “Life is a Circle”, displaying the concept of ‘Change’ through scenes of the four seasons on a circular model. I asked why there was a small garden with a single rose growing in the middle of the piece surrounded by a babbling resin brook. He said that the rose symbolised “hope, despite the change that is going on around us.” I was impressed with his poignant, relevant message and how he articulated his overall justification. We have displayed his art piece in our offices this week so that we can talk to our visitors about it.

It was also a pleasure to visit a Year 7 Visual Art class and view the amazing wearable artworks that this class is creating and understand the deep, important messages they are promoting – some are advocating for peace and to stop war and violence in the Middle East through their wearable artworks; some are advocating for the environment or struggling groups in society. I find it a great comfort that our students are using their creativity to serve our world and make it a better place.  

This term has really been a term rich in creativity. We have held our Year 8 “Fractured Fairytales” production, our inaugural “A Night on Wellness Way” event and soon some of our students will have an opportunity to be involved in dance workshops with professionals as part of the Springfield Learning Coalition’s Arts Magic 2022. Each of these opportunities allows our young people to unleash their creative potentials.

Moreover, our Performing Arts staff have been working with all interested students across Primary and Secondary on a special project called “Believer” this term. This is an opportunity for our students to showcase their singing, dancing and dramatic movement skills and in doing so promote Performing Arts within our College. We are very much looking forward to seeing what they come up with!

Finally, this past week, our students have been involved in several major creative opportunities.  We thank our Year 4 students for representing us in Minecraft Education competition in Ipswich over the weekend and building a very innovative Flying Car Station.  We thank our Year 3 artists for their entertaining Exhibition evening.  We also thank the entire Year 10 cohort who engaged in a week of entrepreneurial activities with Future Anything, an external provider, as part of the IGNITE program. The Year 10s developed their own product aimed at addressing a real-world need, planned out financial and production models and creatively pitched the product to teachers and students. The creativity and service-minded mentality of our students were such a joy to witness.

How can you get your children (and yourself) to think ‘out of the box’ and foster creativity? Here are 6 suggestions:

1. Daily Walking – Minds in motion are more creative. By walking upright, our hands and minds are freed to create in ways that no other animal can. Creative output is 60% higher when walking (indoors or outdoors) versus sitting.
2. Set Task Limits – you would think that setting constraints on tasks would foil creativity but these can bring interesting results. Theodor Geisel (Dr Seuss) was challenged by his editor to write a children’s book with a limit of 50 different words. The product was: “Green Eggs and Ham.”
3. Relax – encourage your child to do some breathing and muscle relaxation exercises and meditation – all help to reduce heart rate, anxiety and stress and in doing so allow connections in the brain to form, attention to improve and creative thought to occur.
4. Collaboration – Beethoven, Marie Curie, the Beatles and Maya Angelou were involved in networks which allowed for their work to be critiqued and encouraged. So, when your child is ‘stuck’, encourage them to collaborate and they may find a new way forward.
5. Sleep On It – sleep and dreaming help create solutions to problems – encourage decent sleep in our children! James Watson dreamed of intertwined serpents which led to the discovery of DNA as a double helix!
6. Genius Hour – for an hour or thereabouts, focus on something you are passionate about, a side project; the labour of love will translate to other projects/problems.

I hope you can find ways to foster creativity as a family over the coming holidays. We once again thank you, our parents and caregivers, for your support of our young people throughout their studies and co-curricular commitments this term.

Do not worry about anything…but…let your requests be made known to God. Philippains 4:6

In my last school I did a silly thing. At times I am prone to doing this silly thing which can cause me great anxiety. I lose things. This particular time I lost a USB memory stick which had a lot of important data on it. You know the feeling when this happens? You ask yourself where were you last; what were your movements; what did you do when you last remember being in possession of the 'lost object'. I had gone through all these scenarios in my mind but this time in the business of the day I failed to straightaway go back to that place and find it. First of all I was frustrated that I was so silly to lose it. Second I gave myself a guilt trip - if only I had gone back to where it was last seen and obtained it before it went missing, I wouldn’t be in this situation. And finally, desperation set in my mind as I fully realised how much data I had lost; the years of work which had suddenly disappeared.

Anxiety when we lose valuable things or worry over those people who are dear to us can effect our hearts and minds. The negative thought patterns of guilt and frustration can plague our minds and snowball into our hearts. It is easy to get anxious over many things in our lives. Jesus says to his disciples don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will have enough worries of its own. And Paul, in his letter to the Philippians (4:6-7), says; Do not worry about anything. How on earth is it possible to do that? To not worry when things weight us down in life?

Paul’s antidote for anxiety here is to pray. He says; in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And then he says when we bring our worries and anxieties to God in prayer he will bless us with; the peace of God which surpasses all human understanding which will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Prayer is one of the few ways in which we can deal with the things in life which are too much for us. In prayer we learn to give our worries to God and depend on someone much bigger and better able to help us. In giving our anxieties to God in prayer he will gift us with his peace which is beyond compare.

Martin Luther summed this up well in one of his last letters to his wife when she was greatly concerned about his health. Luther wrote; Pray and let God worry. May we do the same when we are next anxious!

On Wednesday 7 September, Charis Mullen MP (Member for Jordan) invited a number of schools in the Jordan electorate area to attend a School Tour of Queensland Parliament House. This was to show her appreciation to the schools in the Greater Springfield area. Coraline D (Yr 5), Mihika R (Yr 5), Verdant D (Yr 9) and William V (Yr 9) represented St Peters on the tour which included lunch with Charis Mullen. It was an amazing experience for the students as they learnt about the history of Queensland democracy and visited the Legislative Assembly Chamber. Students enjoyed the real-life experience of the day and sharing what they learnt with their classes.

Yesterday we held a ‘Legacy Day’ for Year 12. Our intent behind the day was to help the Year 12 students leave well, and carry on setting goals and reaching their potential as they approach the last weeks of their schooling.

At the beginning of the day we were lucky enough to be joined by Monique Murphy. Monique is a Paralympian who told her story of adversity and resilience so brilliantly, we thank the P & F for providing the opportunity for our students to witness Monique’s story of courage and it was a gift to listen to her story of bravery.

We then spent some time planning our Legacy goals, and what we can do to leave best as individuals and as a group. Some of our Year 12’s have already made some an imprint here at SPLC Springfield, and Mr Piacun reminded them that there is still time to make important connections and leave the school in a better place.

Mrs Johnson then led the Year 12 students on a journey of everything they may need to know before they leave. Described as a “Mum sending their kids off for camp”, they got lessons in sex education, finance, HECS debt, safe partying. We were very keen to keep our darling Year 12 students aware of the World around them as they leave our safe shores.

It was a joy to spend the day with our 2022 leaders, I feel privileged to have walked with many of them for their whole schools lives, it was emotional for me to realise that was one of the last times I will have them as a whole group, but I’m grateful that we could do so. Thank you P&F for our generous contribution to provide both Lunch and our guest speaker, and thank you for Mr Piacun, for giving up a busy day to spend time with our Year 12s. We appreciate it.

In the final week of Term 3 the entire year 10 cohort were given the opportunity to participate in the Future Anything IGNITE program.

Future Anything is a company that aims in transforming young people’s passion and curiosity into innovative ideas that make their world a better place. Future Anything programs encourage young people to embark on their own journey of self-discovery; using entrepreneurship as a vehicle to empower young people with the knowledge, skills, support, and partnerships to develop innovative ideas that solve problems.

Future Anything’s IGNITE program was a high energy, five-day workshop that culminated in students pitching their own innovative, scalable and sustainable business solutions to a panel of judges in a showcase event.

Students look inward at personal passions and lived experiences to form teams that were united in tackling a common problem. They used design thinking methodology and cutting-edge entrepreneurial tools to ideate, prototype and business model their own innovative, scalable and sustainable business solution.

All groups presented their innovative idea in a preliminary pitching event. Students were pushed out of their comfort zones and thrived in this spotlight. Whilst all teams were impressive, we could only take four through to the finals.

At the final event a great crowd formed and all the 10’s were really excited and nervous all at the same time. All four teams that presented changed their initial pitch and took on all the feedback that they received from the judges in the previous round.

Coco Kitchen were our eventual winners with their sustainable idea of transforming used coconut husks into sturdy, reusable kitchen utensils. Additionally, they had a focus on giving back to our Pacifica neighbours and friends.

Overall, the program was a success with all students loving the challenge that the program presented. It was another clear example of St Peters student’s going ‘ever-higher’ and ‘more-beyond’, whilst being exposed to and increasing their 21st century skills that are so critical for future success.

Last week, from Tuesday the 6th to Friday the 9th of September, our Year 6 students visited Canberra to learn about the functioning of our federal government, democracy in Australia, the history of our Nation’s capital and important events which have transformed our country into the one which we reside in today. Highlights from our tour included learning at the SIEV X Memorial, Parliament, Old Parliament House, the National Zoo, the War Memorial, the National Museum, and many other interesting places. We enjoyed collaborating through hands-on activities at Questacon, Rock-climbing and the iPlay amusement centre. Students will transfer the knowledge and understandings they have gained through their experience to complete HASS components of their Term 3 Inquiry Studies.

Students have reflected on their experience and identified some significant learnings from their time spent away in Canberra, including:

‘At the SIEV X memorial, I learned that many people tried to get to Australia, as it is the land of opportunity, but failed in doing so, drowning in overcrowded boats’ – Jenita, 6T

‘I learned a lot about earthquakes being formed, gravity and how the moon effects our tides when we visited Questacon’ - Ryan, 6T

‘We learned that Canberra was a planned city, with the city centre designed as a triangle near to the mountain. Canberra means ‘meeting place’’ – Olivia, 6T

‘I learned that Canberra was designed by a couple from Chicago – Walter Burley Griffin and wife, Marion Mahony Griffin’ - Ivreen, 6S

‘At the War Memorial, we learned some stories about the people (and animals) who gave up their lives to save us during the world wars’ - Lewis, 6S

‘I learned that Parliament House is huge! There are so many different rooms and buildings aside from the two main houses, where the government and opposition sit’ - Erin, 6S

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion, the Australian Government is contributing funding of $90 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate will be paid directly to the school upon completion of their tour.

This term a team of Year 4 students took part in Minecraft Education sessions in an after-school program. Mr Free and Mr Schaumburg ( Senior IT Systems Support Officers), who are supporting our e-learning programs as well as Mrs West-McInnes worked with the students each week on teamwork and strategy. On 10 September the team took part in a 45-minute build competition to create a Flying Car Station. They competed with determination and resilience in the design thinking process to complete their planned model.

We look forward to this being a continued activity in 2023.

If you happened upon the concourse on Tuesday evening, you may have thought you had stepped back in time as Year 3 celebrated a fantastic finale to their inquiry unit dressed in outfits from the last 50 years. The evening was a celebration of art through the decades, with students showcasing their artwork, writing and dance moves. We are so proud of the incredible effort each child put into creating their displays and dances, and we are grateful to our families who joined us to honour their amazing work.

Throughout Term 3, Year 3 investigated the inquiry question, “How does art show us how life has changed?”  The unit began with the students noticing the presence of art in their lives. They explored their music, dance, fashion, visual art and literature preferences and gradually built awareness that people’s appreciation of art depends on their perspectives, personality, experiences and culture. The students then explored how art and popular culture has changed over the past 100 years and how these changes in popular culture tell the story of how society has evolved. In examining and analysing artworks, advertisements, children’s literature and dance through the decades, the students noticed the changing roles of men and women, the increased representation of First Nations peoples, increased cultural diversity, the effect of technology, including improved understanding of health issues. Through an exploration of the 100 Years of the Archibald portrait prize, the students identified and researched prominent Australians who had made significant contributions to our community. 

We thank our families for making costumes and helping the students prepare for the evening. Special thanks also go to Miss O’Shea, our fabulous student teacher, for her assistance in organising the evening and helping the students choreograph and perform the group dance routine.

Lower Primary Athletics Carnival

The St Peters Springfield Prep to Year 3 Inter House Athletics Carnival was held on Tuesday 13 September 2022.  Our Year 6 students worked in small groups to coordinate each of the activities as part of their HPE assessment for Term 3.  They showed Plus Ultra as they were supportive and encouraging to our younger students. The carnival gave our Prep to Year 3 students the opportunity to participate and compete in a range of Athletic based events for their house. 

A big thank you to Mr Kelly for his organisation to make this event a fun and interactive time. Thank you also to our family members who came along to support the special event.  It was also exciting to have our Kindy friends join in for some of the fun.

WDNA Primary Girls Netball

Congratulations to all girls who have represented the College in WDNA Netball this year across our 3 teams. The girls have been brilliantly coached by Miss Fulcher, Gabby and Chloe throughout the year. Congratulations to our Year 6 girls who have finished their WDNA Netball journey for St Peters. Many have played since Year 3 and thank them for their service to Netball over this time.

We also congratulate the U12 team coached by Miss Fulcher who guided the girls to a win in the grand final last Saturday. This is a fantastic performance by these girls with a heart stopping 1 goal win. Well done girls!

Last weekend saw the final round of AIC Basketball and Tennis fixtures for 2022. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those involved in making our 2022 Basketball and Tennis seasons such successful ones. Many thanks to both Orhan Memedovski (Basketball Coordinator) and Lija Marshall (Tennis Coordinator) for all their hard work each week in ensuring that both sports ran smoothly and effectively.

We would also like to extend our gratitude to all our coaches for their support, knowledge and mentoring of our boys. It would be remiss not to thank both the students who participated as well as their families who supported them each week throughout the AIC season. Without the enthusiasm and support of all the above mentioned, such a successful sporting season of AIC sport would not have been achieved.

We would like to congratulate the following St Peters Tennis teams who completed the AIC Tennis season as undefeated winners - 7A, 8A, 8B, 9B, 10B and 2nd IV. Congratulations must also be extended to our 3rd V Basketball Team who finished off their AIC Basketball season as the 2022 AIC undefeated champions.

St Peters Boys Club Basketball Success

Last Friday night was a great outcome for some of our St Peters students, with both our Under 19 Division 1 and Under 19 Division 2 Basketball Teams defeating Lane Park in the finals and securing the overall season championship. Congratulations to both teams and their coaches on a great result.

AIC Track & Field Update

The fourth and last of our AIC Track & Field Lead Up meets was scheduled for this Wednesday 14 September at The State Athletics Facility (SAF), Nathan. It was one of the last opportunities for our boys to practise and hone their skills before the 2022 AIC Track & Field Championships which will be held in the first week of Term 4. We are extremely proud of the work and enthusiasm our boys have exhibited so far and we are looking forward to seeing what they can achieve at the AIC Championships.

The AIC Track & Field Championships will be held on Thursday 6 October and Friday 7 October at the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre (QSAC), Nathan. We wish all our athletes the best of success as they finalise their preparations leading into these championships.

Congratulations on great success at National All Schools Swimming

A few weeks ago, Cael E (Year 9) represented Queensland at the 2022 Australian All Schools Swimming Championships, Nathan Brisbane.

At these championships, Cael competed in the following events and secured a podium finish in each:

• 100m Breaststroke – Bronze (3rd)
• 400m Individual Medley – Bronze (3rd)
• 200m Breaststroke – Gold (and Australian Champion)

Congratulations Cael on a fantastic result at the 2022 Australian Schools Swimming Championships and in particular your winning performance in the 200m Breaststroke. Well done!

We have nearly made it, and what a term it has been!

Congratulations to all the girls that have represented St Peters this term either on the Hockey field, the Netball, Volleyball or Tennis Courts, our Rhythmic Gym girls who performed so beautifully and our Rowing girls on the water.

Special mention and congratulations to all our Year 12 Girls who, for many, have represented St Peters on the Sporting field for the last time. We are very proud of you all and thank you for the memories and your dedication to St Peters Sport.

Our girls have done an amazing job this term, I have enjoyed watching them every week and the improvement across our Girls Sports has been impressive. The girls have wonderful support from our Coordinators and Coaches, and we thank each and every one of them for all they do for St Peters Sport.

Good luck to our Track & Field girls, they have worked so hard preparing for the QGSSSA Championships on today.

Good luck also to our Rowing girls participating in the QLD Schools State Schools Championships in Rockhampton this weekend.

Last weekend our Senior students came to support our Netball & Tennis girls for their rescheduled FOCUS ROUND which was washed out the week prior. It was a great day full of atmosphere, well done to all involved.

NETBALL

After a couple of wet weekends, it was fabulous to see the sun finally shining down on St Peters for our final fixture in the 2022 QGSSSA season. The spotlight was on Netball with the last round coinciding with Focus week and the girls did not disappoint. The 7A’s saved their best game for last fighting back from a big first quarter deficit to secure their first win of the season. After a tight first quarter the 7B’s pulled it together to also secure a good win. The 10B’s continued with the excellent form they have shown all season to post a big win and ensure a clean sweep of the first round.

Round 2 saw the Open team cheered onto the court for the final time by an enthusiastic band of supporters. The result was never in doubt with the girls playing excellent Netball to secure a huge win and ensure the departing players were left with fond memories. The 10C’s and 7C’s followed suit with their own dominant displays and kept the winning streak going.

The 10A’s were a far superior team and easily accounted for their opponent adding another win to the tally. The Senior A’s were not to be out shone, completely dominating across the court and winning by the biggest margin of the day and ensuring they shared the Premiership. Another big win to the Senior B team made it a clean sweep for St Peters and a fitting farewell to our Grade 12 girls.

There were a number of internal games played between the Years 8 and 9 teams and these were some of the most fiercely contested games of the day with the closest of margins. There may not have been premiership points on offer but that was not going to affect the level of enthusiasm and determination on display.

A fabulous way to end a Netball season winning all nine games on offer. Well done ladies.

On Monday afternoon we had a wonderful turnout to celebrate the 2022 Netball season. Past student and current Firebird player, Ruby Bakewell-Doran, was our special guest and shared with the girls the ups and downs of her Netball journey, it was a fantastic insight into what is required to take your sport to the next level.

We celebrated our award winners (below), we acknowledged our five Premiership teams as well as our two undefeated teams.

We thanked our Netball PSG for their amazing work throughout the season, we are very grateful for our sponsors that funded each girl to receive a long sleeve tee, each team had a manager this season which was wonderful, thank you to these parents and we thanked Mr Cox for all he does to support our program.

Our program is what it is today because of our team of coaches led by Tracey Bruce & Patti Farrell, we thank them for a wonderful season.

St Peters Girls Volleyball Season Review:

The St Peters Girls Volleyball program had another successful campaign in 2022. Across the 11 teams, five teams took out the top spot: Senior A, Senior B, 10A, 10B and 8A. A notable mention to both the undefeated Senior As who did not drop a set all season along with the 10As who record another consecutive unbeaten season dating back to when they started in the program in Year 7. Including these successes were many other excellent results in each team and a number of high-placed finishes.

Over the course of the nine weeks, the teams continued to build on their skills and connections while the girls’ attitudes and preparations heading into each game was commendable. We thank them for their consistent effort over the season.

We also thank the coaches and support staff for their time and dedication and Head Coach, Matt Young, for his guidance and support of the coaches and players.

QGSSSA TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Congratulations to all girls who have been part of the QGSSSA Track & Field season. It has been a big season and we thank all girls for their attendance at training and the meets in the lead up to the QGSSSA Track & Field Championships today. The College is proud of your dedication, effort and commitment to Track & Field and look forward to seeing the results of this work.

We wish you all the best and thank our Year 12’s for their contribution to Track & Field over many years. Finally, we thank the parents for their ongoing support of the girls throughout the season. Without your efforts, girls would not be able to participate.

JUNIOR AUSTRALIAN RULES

To continue from the introduction year in 2021, the QGSSSA Junior Australian Rules Competition Days will be held on the following days.

Competition Days

• Round 1 - Saturday 22 October
• Round 2 - Saturday 29 October
• Round 3 - Saturday 5 November
• Round 4 - Saturday 12 November

MATCH CONDITIONS SUMMARY 

• 12 a-side on field and three interchange players 
• Half field ground size 
• 15-minute halves, 5-minute break 
• Size 3 leather football (match balls supplied by AFL Queensland)
• Modified tackling, bumping permitted 
• Bouncing the ball (two max)
• No kicking off the ground 
• Mouth guards are compulsory 
• Scores are recorded, internal ladder published in QG Sports hub, no pennants awarded

JUNIOR SOFTBALL

Years 7 - 9 Girls Only - St Peters play in the QGSSSA Junior Softball Competition in Term 4.

There are four game days played in the afternoon at Downey Park in Weeks 3 & 4 next term (game times are approx. 1.00pm - 5.00pm). Bus transport will be provided.

Term 3 trials are now complete, and training will recommence on Tuesday morning 4/10 next term @ Hart Road Oval | 6.15am - 7.30am.

• Round 1 – Tuesday 18 October
• Round 2 – Thursday 20 October
• Round 3 – Monday 24 October
• Round 4 – Wednesday 26 October

BADMINTON

BWPI WATER POLO

The 2022 – 2023 BWPI Water Polo Season trials have commenced, details have been emailed to all girls who have signed on and the Term 3 trials schedule can be found on the St Peters App. It is important for selection that all girls attend all training sessions/trials.

Year 5 (born in 2011 only) & Year 6 girls are invited to trial, please check for an email from Mr Dawson.

A few key points to consider before signing on to Water Polo:

• The season runs for Term 4 2022 & Term 1 2023 – THE COMMITMENT IS FOR BOTH TERMS.
• Training sessions are held in the 50m pool in the evenings.
• There is a fee associated to playing Water Polo for St Peters – further details to follow.

To follow on from last year, St Peters will again be entering an U13 and U15 teams into the ALL-SCHOOLS TOUCH COMPETITION to be held in Term 4 down the Gold Coast.

The next training session for all girls competing will be this Monday 3 October (Queens Birthday Public Holiday) @ Harts Road Oval, 2.00pm – 4.00pm.
