Girls Sport Coordinator – Anne-Marie Champion
“Dreams don’t work unless you do.” Motivation Monday.
We have nearly made it, and what a term it has been!
Congratulations to all the girls that have represented St Peters Lutheran College this term either on the Hockey field, the Netball, Volleyball or Tennis Court, our Rhythmic Gym girls who performed so beautifully and our Rowing girls on the water.
Our girls have done an amazing job. I have enjoyed watching them every week and the improvement across our Girls Sports has been impressive. The girls have wonderful support from our Coordinators and Coaches, and we thank each and every one of them for all they do for St Peters Sport.
Special mention and congratulations to all our Year 12 girls who, for many, have represented St Peters on the sporting field for the last time. We are very proud of you all and thank you for the memories and your dedication to St Peters Sport.
Good luck to our Track & Field girls, they have worked so hard with their final preparations for the QGSSSA Championships on today.
Good luck also to our Rowing girls participating in the QLD Schools State Championships in Rockhampton this weekend.
NETBALL
Coordinator: Mrs Anne-Marie Champion – a.champion@stpeters.qld.edu.au
Round 9 Wrap v Ipswich Girls' Grammar School
After what can only be described as a very challenging season, we finally made it to the last fixture. The sun was shining, and any thought of a lockdown was put aside as we welcomed Ipswich Girls' Grammar to St Peters. We were fortunate to end our season with home court advantage and the girls certainly capitalised on this by convincingly winning all four games in Round 1. Round 2 proved no different with all four teams again easily accounting for the opposition and posting big wins. The Senior A team dominated their opponents and won 51-14 and the 8C’s put on an impressive defensive display to win 47-0. Round 3 saw the undefeated Open Team treated to an St Peters tunnel and a rousing reception. They certainly did not disappoint the crowd and put on a Netball display reflective of the awesome season they have had, defeating IGGS 59-9. The 9B’s had to fight hard to secure a win and ensure we kept our winning record alive. The Senior B and C teams then took to the court, some for the last time, and posted substantial wins to ensure we finished the final round of fixtures with a clean sweep. A special mention must also go to our Senior C2 team who played in the St Hilda’s draw this season, although they didn’t win many games, they represented St Peters every week with pride and we loved the bond the team developed as the season progressed.
Also, on Saturday our 10A & 10C teams ventured to Cannon Hill to take on Brisbane State High School in some friendly games, both teams can away convincing winners.
Congratulations to our undefeated teams in 2021 – Opens, Senior A, Senior C1, 9A, 8A, 8B & 7A
We ended what was a rollercoaster season with an amazing celebration in our Netball presentation afternoon on Monday. All the girls enjoyed pizza, cake, a dance competition with Senior A taking the crown, and a very special guest presenter, Firebird player, Kim Ravillion.
What a way to end a Netball season, well done ladies!!

Round 9 Wrap v Ipswich Girls' Grammar School
It was a weird feeling to be playing only our fourth game in Round 9 of the QGSSSA Hockey season on the weekend. We played Ipswich Girls' Grammar who we have had good success against in recent years which continued on the weekend. Opens started strongly against an IGGS team missing three players which allowed us to lend them some of our players ensuring everyone got maximum game time. The girls played well when we made the effort to play with width allowing a number of goals to be scored by post players. We won 12-0. Congratulations to our three Year 12 girls - Maisy W, Lauren H and Jane R - for their commitment to St Peters Hockey since Year 7.
The Juniors started their game well after being afforded a tunnel by Opens players and College leaders. The girls showed how far they had come with some exceptional passing and dragging that had been a work in progress for the past few months. The girls eventually scored six goals and conceded one.
Nothing better than banging in a few goals to keep the girls motivated in the off season.
TENNIS
Coordinator: Ms Renata Franco – r.franco@stpeters.qld.edu.au
Round 9 Wrap v Ipswich Girls' Grammar School
Congratulations to all the Tennis girls who finished off the season with a wonderful display of team spirit and determination. A special mention to the Opens, Senior B’s and Junior A’s who defeated Ipswich Girls' Grammar School without dropping a set. Good luck to the Year 12’s who played their last game of Tennis for St Peters and all the Coaches can’t wait to see everyone else back at the courts next year!
VOLLEYBALL
Coordinators: Ms Natalie Holman & Mike Cujes – girlsvolleyball@stpeters.qld.edu.au
Round 9 Wrap v Ipswich Girls' Grammar School
It was a spectacular finish to the QGSSSA Volleyball season for the St Peters teams in Round 9 where we faced Ipswich Girls' Grammar at the Centenary SHS courts. The girls enjoyed the extra space around the courts, with some tremendous jump serving displays keeping the pressure on all of the Ipswich teams. The set count for the day was St Peters 24 – IGGS 7 and this was the reward for the dedication all members of the program, both students and coaches, have displayed throughout an interrupted season.
There were many highlights on the day which began with the 7A and 7B teams both recording victories, this was especially big for the 7B girls as it was the first time they were able to belt out 'When The Saints Go Marching In' after a game this year – it was a rousing rendition!
The 8A and 9A teams continued the excellent start to the day, each recording 3-0 victories. The 8As played some of their best Volleyball of the season controlling the match from the outset, while the 9A team, after a tight first set, blew the IGGS girls away in the second set with a 25-5 blitz before securing another comfortable victory in the third. A big congratulations to the 9A team who finished the season undefeated, despite losing players to injury and Ironbark. A total of 13 different girls played for the 9A team this season, and it is a credit to all Year 9 players and Coaches that the girls were able to perform so well with constant line-up changes from week to week.
The successes kept on coming with the 9B and 10A teams also victorious. The 10A team dominated their final match of the season, keeping the IGGS team to 13 points or fewer in all three sets! The 9Bs had a little more competition but were able to keep their cool and come out on top in a more even contest. The Senior A and 10B teams continued the domination the Senior As proving far too good for Ipswich, winning each of the three sets by a margin of 10 or more! The 10B girls had a tougher match on their hands, losing a very close first set 29-27 before roaring back in the second to wins 25-15, and coming back from an 8-3 deficit in the third to claim the win 15-11.
The final two games for the day were the Open girls and Senior B sides. The Senior B girls were down on players and had to borrow from the 10B team to field a side. They battled hard but were eventually overwhelmed by a determined IGGS team losing two sets to one. The Open girls, buoyed by the extra support that had come along to cheer put in a tremendous performance, and although they dropped a tight second set were never seriously challenged running out comfortable 3-1 victors, and rewarding the spectators by playing attractive, highlight heavy, attacking volleyball.
At the end of the season it is nice to reflect on the outstanding performances of our Volleyball teams. In particular, the Open, Senior A, 10A and 9A teams remaining undefeated is testimony to the strong emphasis the coaching team have placed on learning to play Volleyball as a team from the very beginning of their time in the program, from the 7C team and up. Although this can sometimes lead to a dropped game or two in a younger age group, where skill and teamwork are still developing, the payoff is real improvement in game style and performance as players move through the years in the St Peters Volleyball program.
A big thank you to all of the players and Coaches for making another QGSSSA Volleyball season such a success, to Mrs Champion, Ms Buckby and the rest of Sports House for the crazy number of hours spent getting everything sorted so that so many matches were able to go ahead this season. Special thanks also go to the dedicated Volleyball Support Group members who donate so much of their time to supporting the students, Coaches, and Coordinators in addition to running the BBQ and refreshments and providing the special touches that supported all of our teams.
Finally, a BIG SHOUT OUT to the two Volleyball Captains, Claudia and Jess. These girls had some terrific ideas as to little things they could do to bring all the Volleyball players together and make the season a special and memorable one for all. The weekly prizes for teams to award players for various reasons e.g. the Marvellous and Motivating (Maltesers and M&Ms), and the not (Violet) Crumbling under pressure awards, really added a little something that never failed to bring a smile to the faces of the girls and a furrow to the brow of the coaches who had to decide who the recipients would be! I know that the students from the younger grades really appreciated the support Jess and Claudia gave to all members of the Volleyball program.
From the Coordinators, Natalie and Mike, best of luck to Coaches and players with study, club games, work and generally getting through the long break before we can come back for another exciting QGSSSA volleyball season next year.
