Staying Connected: The Importance of Parental Awareness in the Digital Age
In today's digital landscape, social media plays an increasingly significant role in our children's lives. As parents and caregivers, it's crucial to be aware of and involved in our children's online activities, particularly their social media presence. This article aims to highlight the importance of parental awareness and provide some guidance on navigating this complex terrain.
The Social Media Landscape
According to the eSafety Commissioner, 94% of Australian teenagers (aged 14-17) use social media. Popular platforms include Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat and Facebook. While these platforms offer opportunities for connection and creativity, they also present potential risks that parents should be aware of.
Why Parental Awareness Matters
Online Safety: Being aware of your child's social media accounts allows you to help protect them from online risks such as cyberbullying, inappropriate content, and online predators.
Digital Footprint: What your child posts online can have long-lasting implications. The Australian Psychological Society notes that many young people don't fully understand the permanence of their digital footprint.
Mental Health: Research from the Black Dog Institute suggests a link between social media use and mental health issues in young people. Being aware of your child's online activities can help you identify potential concerns early.
Screen Time Management: Excessive social media use can impact academic performance and sleep patterns. Parental awareness can help in setting healthy boundaries.
Steps for Parents
Open Communication: Regularly discuss social media use with your child. Create an environment where they feel comfortable sharing their online experiences.
Education: Learn about the platforms your child uses. The eSafety Commissioner's website offers excellent resources for parents. esafety.gov.au/parents
Privacy Settings: Help your child set up privacy settings on their accounts to control who can see their content.
Lead by Example: Model responsible social media use in your own life.
Set Guidelines: Establish clear rules about social media use, including time limits and appropriate content.
Remember, the goal isn't to invade your child's privacy but to ensure their safety and wellbeing in the digital world. By staying informed and involved, we can help our children navigate social media responsibly and safely.
For more information or support, please don't hesitate to contact your child’s PC teachers, Year Level Coordinator, or Head of Primary or Secondary Years.
Stay safe and connected!

Life Symposium 2 - Wednesday August 7 | 6:45pm - 8:15pm
Join us for an inspiring session with Dr Justin Coulson, renowned co-host and parenting expert on Channel Nine’s Parental Guidance. As the founder of happyfamilies.com.au and the author of nine best-selling books on raising resilient children, Justin is recognised as one of Australia’s most trusted authorities on parenting, relationships, and wellbeing.
We’ve all heard the news. A former Sydney schoolgirl. A petition. Literally thousands of stories of sexual assault. Non-consensual sexual encounters that are claimed to be common-place occurrences at parties for teens.
And our kids think it’s normal. They think it’s just how things are.
How are we supposed to talk to our children – our teenagers – about consent, respect, alcohol and other drugs, staying safe, and all of the risks they face? Between us not knowing what to say, or when or how to say it, and our kids not willing to hear it, we’re in a tough spot. But we have to have the conversations. We must. So where do we start?
Dr Justin Coulson, one of Australia’s leading parenting experts and father to six daughters, has put together a presentation designed specifically for parents of high school students. In this session, you’ll hear:
What teenagers are getting up to in terms of alcohol, drugs, pornography, and sex;
Why they think they know everything (and why it’s so hard to teach them anything);
Simple ways to have the conversations your teenager needs to have in a way that invites them to want to listen;
The critical things every parent must do to reduce the risk that their child will be either a perpetrator or a victim of non-consensual sexual activity (assault).
Don’t miss this opportunity to gain valuable insights and tools to have those difficult conversations with your child/ren around sex, consent and staying safe. This is an event not to be missed.
All proceeds from the Symposium will be donated to a children’s charity.
Thank you for your ongoing support and I look forward to seeing you at Symposium 2.

Continuing Enrolment 2025
Dear Parents, Guardians, and Caregivers
We wish to assure you that planning at the College is well underway to ensure effective educational programs, staffing, and administration at our school in 2025. To assist us with finalising details it is important that the College is aware of our expected student numbers.
My child will continue as a student at St Peters Springfield in 2025
There is no requirement for the families of students who will remain at the College in 2025 to contact us. Unless the Head of Springfield or Enrolments Office receives specific written advice from you that your child is leaving at the end of 2024, we will assume your child’s enrolment will continue and as such, their place at school in 2025 is secured. Families who will remain at St Peters into 2025, therefore, do not need to take any action.
My child will leave St Peters Springfield at the end of 2024
In the first instance, we would welcome your feedback and the opportunity to discuss why your student is not continuing. We understand that some circumstances or family plans cannot be changed, but sometimes we can assist in serving you and the community better by discussing your reasons for leaving.
If you intend for your child/ren to cease their enrolment at the College at the end of 2024, we wish to remind families that written notification is required one term in advance. Whilst we would very much appreciate your advice as soon as you are able, the final date for acceptance of notice before families are required to pay one term of fees in lieu of notice will be Monday, 30 September 2024.
If you have any questions regarding continuing or new enrolment with St Peters, please contact the Enrolments Team by email at s.enrolments@stpeters.qld.edu.au, or by phone at 3470 3888.

Primary Years Programme (PYP) Exhibition - Human Library
This year, for the first time at St Peters Lutheran College Springfield, Year 6 will be participating in a Primary Years Programme (PYP) Exhibition! The PYP Exhibition is an event where students are given the opportunity to share their understanding of a real-life issue or topics they are passionate about, inspiring learning and taking action.
We would like to create a bank of experts to be part of our Human Library at St Peters Springfield. The aim is to “spark the inquiry” prior to Year 6 students beginning their exhibition journey, encouraging students to think about their passions and interests, and how they may direct their inquiries. These could be volunteers that students could make connections with on issues that are of both global and local significance, according to their individual passions and interests. The Human Library is an innovative and interactive program that provides a safe and welcoming environment in which participants can learn more about the individuals in their community. We want volunteers that have special talents or life experiences to share that are inspirational.
Our Human Library volunteers would deliver TED Talk style presentation sessions that enable students to learn and be inspired about how different people have found their passions and the different paths that led them to where they are today.
This type of innovative and community-connected learning offers our students unique and engaging opportunities. Volunteering to be part of our Human Library at St Peters Springfield is a wonderful way for us to work in partnership as a community so please consider joining us in the coming weeks!
If this sounds like something you would be interested in participating in, we would love to hear from you! Please contact the College at a.cullen@stpeters.qld.edu.au.

Year 5 Camp
Year 5 had an extraordinary time at Year 5 camp, and many of us challenged our fears with courage and had a great time with our friends, or with some new people, all to help our Year 5’s communication skills.
The Year 5 cohort got to spend a three-day, two-night camp with all their friends, while taking part in some brilliant activities that pushed them out of their comfort zones. There were many activities, including roasting marshmallows on the campfire, which were very tasty! We also sang songs, and with all the activities, the instructors had a ’challenge by choice’ policy, which meant students pushed themselves and created their own challenges. For some, the challenge was to go to the top, while for others, they pushed themselves to go as far as they could, so, students could decide their own challenge!
Year 5 camp was a brilliant experience. A lot of us had to go outside our comfort zone and try new things. The activities we did were Abseiling, Flying Fox, Canoeing, Raft Building, Low Ropes, Giant Swing, Team Challenge and a Sensory Trail. We were separated into four groups for these activities.
Abseiling was where we were attached to a harness and had to climb down a six-metre wall wearing harnesses.
Flying Fox was exhilarating, as we flew over the camp lake. I know that some of us, including myself, were nervous since it was quite high up, which only added to the thrill. We renamed the Flying Fox to the Gliding Possum.
Canoeing and Raft Building also took place on the lake, and it seemed like the instructors just wanted to get us wet! For raft building, we used four big plastic cylinders, four ropes, and two wooden poles. We tied two cylinders together and then the other two together. Then we used the wooden pole to connect them. The lake was very cold and when someone fell in, it was extremely hard to get them back onto our raft.
Low ropes were done in teams of three. One person would be walking from one end of the rope to another while the two other people were spotting them.
The giant swing was an extremely high swing, sort of. You were strapped into a harness and then your group would pull you up to the height you choose. Once you yelled “STOP,” you would pull a black knot which would release you to go swinging.
Team Challenge was when everyone in your group had to work together to do some difficult activities. One thing we did in Team Challenge was where we had to all stand on a rope and order our heights without speaking. Some groups did well in this challenge, however; others struggled to communicate without talking. Sensory Trail had everyone blindfolded in a line, and we had to go through an obstacle course by trusting the person in front. The activities were definitely a highlight of camp!
And from one of the teachers:
Each activity was a ‘challenge by choice’ and from the first walk around of the activities our students were encouraged to push their comfort zones. This required trust in something other than themselves. And to increase the challenge, we mixed up the social groups so students would work with and create new friendships. For some students, the challenge of Abseiling was to descend the wall, but for others, simply walking to the top and looking over the edge was the conquering of fears. On Thursday morning, Mr Lyons led a devotion about our human imperfection and the need for others to help us in our weaknesses, an important reminder in the group activities. This was especially noticeable and important while walking the Sensory Trail – completed while blindfolded and totally dependent on the person in front to navigate the trail – and during the Giant Swing – when students were hoisted up to start their swing by their classmates. Try as we might, humans were created to be a part of a community, and that means accepting the little imperfections of those around us. As we grow up, our tendency is to hide our weaknesses, which makes it hard to confront and work through them. But when we are aware of each other’s weaknesses, we can work together to support and overcome them. The teachers all agree that camp was a rousing success, with every student making a new friend and being challenged to try something new!

New Initiatives in our Secondary Years
At St Peters Lutheran College Springfield, we are constantly striving to enhance our students' educational experience and provide them with opportunities to develop valuable skills. We are pleased to share some recent initiatives that are already making a positive impact on our Secondary students.
Coffee Nook: Brewing Success
Our Year 10 students have taken on an exciting new challenge with the launch of the Coffee Nook. After completing a comprehensive barista training program, these enterprising students are now running their own coffee shop, selling beverages from Hearts Cafe each morning from 7:30am to 8:15am. This initiative not only provides a convenient service to our school community but also offers our students real-world experience in customer service, time management, and basic business operations.
Games Club: Fostering Connection and Strategy
We are excited to announce the introduction of our new Games Club, operating during lunch breaks on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This club provides a space for students to engage in a variety of board games, promoting social interaction, strategic thinking, and healthy competition among peers. It is a great way for students to unwind, make new friends, and exercise their minds in a fun, relaxed environment.
Peer Tutoring: Learning from Each Other
Our successful peer tutoring program continues to thrive, with sessions run by our dedicated Academic Portfolio Leaders during first break. This initiative not only supports students who may need extra help in certain subjects but also allows our high-achieving students to develop leadership and communication skills through teaching others.
AVEO Aged Care Partnership: Bridging Generations
In an exciting new initiative, we've established a partnership with AVEO aged care facility across the road. Our students will have the opportunity to volunteer at AVEO, engaging with residents and contributing to their community. This program not only allows students to fulfill their community service requirements but also fosters intergenerational connections, empathy, and a sense of social responsibility.
Learning Commons: A Quiet Study Haven for Year 12s
We're pleased to announce that our new Learning Commons will be available as a quiet study space for Year 12 students during break times. This dedicated area provides a peaceful environment for our senior students to focus on their studies, work on assignments, or engage in quiet group discussions, supporting their academic success in this crucial year.
These initiatives reflect our commitment to providing a well-rounded education that goes beyond the classroom. By offering diverse opportunities for skill development, social interaction, leadership, and community engagement, we aim to prepare our students for success in their future endeavours.
We are proud of our students' enthusiasm and participation in these programs and look forward to seeing the positive outcomes they will bring to our school community.

Permission letters have been sent to parents. We wish all our ensembles the best of luck for their final preparations and for their performances next week. An Eisteddfod provides invaluable feedback for conductors and musicians and offers an opportunity to support musicians from other schools and Colleges.
Ipswich Junior Speech Eisteddfod
Best wishes to Mrs Kathy Wilson and to Year 6 students as they make their final preparations for the Ipswich Junior Speech Eisteddfod next Thursday morning. Mrs Wilson has a key role within this organisation, and we are very fortunate to have Private Tutors who are leaders in their discipline in the community and can impart their expertise and knowledge within our College community.

Round 2 vs Ipswich Grammar School – Saturday 20 July
As we continue to strive for personal and team excellence in our sporting endeavours, I would like to highlight the significance of regular training attendance for our girls. Attending training sessions is crucial not just for enhancing team performance but also for fostering a culture of respect and commitment.
Equally important is the practice of communicating absences in advance. If a student cannot attend a training session, our expectation is that they communicate the absence, in advance, with the relevant Sports coordinator. This allows the coach to plan and avoid unnecessary disruptions. Unexplained absences can undermine the cohesion and spirit of the team, affecting not just performance but morale.
We understand that juggling multiple commitments can be challenging. If any student is struggling to manage their schedule, I encourage them to visit Sports House for a discussion with our staff. We are here to support students to find solutions to balance their commitments effectively.
Thank you for your continued support and dedication to our Sports programs. Let’s work together to uphold the values of respect and commitment in all our sporting activities.

Rugby League News
What a debut for St Peters in their first ever game of AIC Rugby League! Both the players and the crowd turned up emphatically, with the day starting off with the Juniors recording a victory and the Senior Rugby League team winning in front of an enthusiastic Focus Round crowd, well fed by the Rugby Parent Support Group.
For our debut in Rugby League, this game was our only home game as the AIC works on a Gala day format and the boys turned up! This week our 7B Rugby League team will play St Edmund’s College at Villanova, while our Second XIII have a bye this weekend.
A standout moment from Year 12 student Sam C, who scored a historic first try for St Peters.
Reflecting on the experience, Sam shared, "Being my first ever Rugby League game, I was incredibly nervous, but wearing the new white and maroon jersey and being tunnelled on by my peers was absolutely amazing and lifted my confidence. The crowd was electric, and I really appreciated every person who turned up and cheered for us. Even though it was a hot and rough match, it made us all play ten times better. The noise of the St Peters crowd when I broke through and ran towards my first try made me feel like I was running faster than I had ever run before. It was a memory that I will treasure for the rest of my life, and I am grateful that I got the opportunity to compete for a school that I am proud to represent."
Congratulations to all our players and supporters for making this a memorable start to our AIC Rugby League journey!
Tennis News
After a detailed pre-season complete with competitive trials and a training camp, the boys took to the courts across all corners of Brisbane for the AIC trial round against Villanova College. Our Tennis program started with a strong start with majority of teams coming away with wins last weekend. We turn our attention to St Edmund’s College this week where our Primary students will play at Ambrose Treacy College, our Junior Years 7-8 will be at Home at Lohe Street Courts and our Senior Years 9-12 students will take the away trip to Ipswich playing at George Adler Tennis centre on clay. Seniors make sure you bring your herring bone shoes!
basketball News
Our basketballers faced mixed results against Villanova with several teams having to dig deep against Villanova, many with limited numbers.
To ensure a smoother start against St Edmund’s College, it is imperative that any known absences be communicated to both coaches and Basketball Coordinator Ms Georgia Smith g.c.smith@stpeters.qld.edu.au as soon as possible for both trainings and games. Please ensure you are at the game 45 minutes beforehand due to majority of teams playing at away venues. Reminder that Years 7-9 students will be at Centenary High State High School Courts, except 7D and 8D, for more information please see the draw!

SQSRC ROWING NEWS
St Peters Boys Rowing crews had an extremely successful weekend at the South Queensland Schools Championship Regatta held at the Queensland State Rowing Centre, Wyaralong Dam, last weekend clinching nine (9) medals across the shed. Our Year 9 1st Quad also raced valiantly making final in both their quad and double scull boats. The weather was not helpful on Saturday with a stiff head breeze persistent throughout the day resulting in some small boat finals being moved to Sunday. Congratulations to the following athletes:
Boys Year 10 Quad – Joshua W, Lucas C, Dheeraj C, Nima Ebrahimi G, Finn O’Brien (cox) – Bronze
Boys Year 11 Double Scull -Flynn G and Sam M – Gold
Boys Year 11 Four - Matt J, Flynn G, Sam M, Ted A and Dominic P (cox) – Silver
Boys Open Quad - Matt J, Flynn G, Sam M, Ted A and Dominic P (cox) – Silver
The boys are just returning from a well-earned five week break since the SQSRC Trophy regatta and will commence training over the next couple of weeks for the Queensland Schools Championship Regatta (States) in Rockhampton from 14-16 September 2024.
The highlights of the weekend were the performances of the Boys Year 11 Four winning silver as this is the first time this crew have raced a sweep boat.
Inter-house track & Field
Next Wednesday 24 July will feature our Junior High Inter-House Track & Field day. Please ensure you wear your house shirt and are able to compete in a range of events for your house! All students are expected to attend and represent their house to the best of their ability. We look forward to seeing all students enjoying the last Inter-House Carnival of the year.
