To learn a language is to have one more window from which to view the world. Chinese Proverb
Learning a new language can change our life completely and open doors to a new way of life. It is a different way of thinking as each language has its own personality and distinctive ways of expressing ideas.
At St Peters all students from Prep to Year 9 learn the French language. French is a major world language, spoken as the first language in more than two dozen countries on five continents and as an official language in 33 countries. For students learning French in a school language program, a key dimension of the curriculum involves understanding the cultural dimension that shapes and is shaped by the language. The curriculum is designed with an intercultural language learning orientation to enable students to participate meaningfully in intercultural experiences, to develop new ways of seeing and being in the world, and to understand more about themselves in the process.
There are many benefits from learning a language - enhances literacy skills, improves memory and brain function, helps develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. It also fosters respect and understanding of other cultures. Learning about the culture enriches the learning journey.
In Primary students have two French lessons a week but each look forward to celebrating Bastille Day on 14 July. Last Thursday our students enjoyed participating in our French Celebration Day. Two Primary Assemblies were led by students who were confident in leading in French. There were also performances by Year 3 and Year 5 students showcasing their French singing with the student cohort joining in.
Students were also treated to a range of French treats from our Café. It was wonderful to see so many families supporting the additional food choices for the day.
Our final activity was a French Movie afternoon for our Year 4-6 students. This was organised by our Year 9 PC teachers and students who provided movie food to purchase during the movie session. Money raised from the food sales will be donated to the Australian Lutheran World Service project for this year.
As students head back to the classroom and into their French lessons, they will continue to value the importance of learning culture and language together.

Nurturing Faith
Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect. 1 Peter 3:15
How do we encourage the nurturing of faith or spiritual growth in our College community? You might think, I am not a Pastor, a Chaplain, a Christian studies teacher, I am not a regular church goer, I am not a person of great faith, that’s not really my thing. But we are all part of the Christian community present in our school, so we all have a part to play in being formed in faith and influencing others to grow spiritually. Whether we are strong in our Christian identity or not we all impact and influence other people, either positively or negatively. The spiritual values and beliefs we model have an impact on others.
Reflecting on your own spiritual journey, how comfortable are you in talking about your faith, your spirituality to others? Many people find it hard to talk about their spiritual journey for a variety of reasons. They don’t have the language, the background or the confidence. The advantage of teaching in a Lutheran school is that we are all on a journey through life, growing in our knowledge of the Bible, God, and the teachings of the Church together. We are not doing this alone, we are part of a community which welcomes the growth and grace that comes from questioning where are we and where is God in this?
Check out this list of seven 'ush' words below. Seven reasons why people find it hard to talk about their faith. Are there any 'ushs' you empathise with? What would have to change in your life for these 'ushs' not to be a concern or barrier for you?
Blush (it’s too personal or private)
Hush (I wouldn’t really know what to say)
Rush (I would struggle to find the time)
Push (I don’t have a right to force my faith on anybody else)
Gush (I wouldn’t feel able to speak intelligently about my faith)
Mush (my own faith feels confused or unclear)
Crush (I’m worried or scared how people might respond)*
Prayer:
Gracious God, help me to take time out to reflect on my own faith journey. Encourage me to engage in those spiritual practices which will grow me closer to you. Give me the grace to live out my faith in my school community and when the opportunity arises to share my faith. Teach me Lord that you are with me in a very real way in all the ordinariness of life, of work and of family. Bless me with your presence Jesus as you bless others through me. Amen.

Arise Christian Community Church
Arise is a Lutheran community that meets at St Peters, Springfield. It’s a place where you can come to know God’s love through Jesus, and find light and hope for your life, and connect with other families from St Peters and the wider community.
In our service you will hear God’s word, sing, pray and share in Holy Communion if you want to. There’s a message for the kids too.
We wish to assure you that planning at the College is well underway to ensure effective educational programs, staffing, and administration at our school in 2023. To assist us with finalising details it is important that the College is aware of our expected student numbers.
My child will continue as a student at St Peters Springfield in 2023
There is no requirement for the families of students who will remain at the College in 2023 to contact us. Unless the Principal or Enrolments Office receives specific written advice from you that your child is leaving at the end of 2022, we will assume your child’s enrolment will continue and as such, their place at school in 2023 is secured. Families who will remain at St Peters into 2023 , therefore, do not need to take any action.
My child will leave St Peters Springfield at the end of 2022
We do wish to remind families that, as per the terms of your enrolment contract, if you do not intend for your child to remain a student of St Peters in 2023, you need to us advise us in writing prior to the start of Term 4, 2022. Whilst we would very much appreciate your advice as soon as you are able, the final date for acceptance of notice without penalty (term’s fees in lieu of notice) will be Monday, 3 October 2022. Please note that there can be no flexibility with regards to this contractual requirement due to the high demand for places at the College.
If you have any questions regarding continuing or new enrolment with St Peters, please contact me by email at s.enrolments@stpeters.qld.edu.au, or by phone at (07) 3470 3888.

Wellbeing on Wellness Way
Stolen Focus: you, me, everybody.
I believe we now need an attention movement to reclaim our minds. I believe we need to act urgently, because this may be like the climate crisis, or the obesity crisis – the longer we wait, the harder it will get. The more our attention degrades, the harder it will be to summon the personal and political energy to take on the forces stealing our focus. The first step it requires is a shift in our consciousness. – Johann Hari
Late last term a visiting academic and speaker Dr Kristy Goodwin addressed staff, students, and parents about taming digital distractions.
What she spoke of concerned all of us; what she spoke of was not entirely new information; what she spoke of matters hugely to the work of educators, parents, and wider society. It was for this reason that teachers requested that Dr Goodwin speak.
Recently, the Guardian published an interview/book review of a newly published work by UK author, Johann Hari, entitled Stolen Focus. It sets out current and emerging research on why humanity is finding it increasingly unable to focus deeply.
Ready to stop reading now? There may be a reason why.
As the author recently wrote in The Guardian about our collective inability to pay attention, “…isn’t happening because we all individually became weak-willed. Your focus didn’t collapse. It was stolen.”
Stolen Focus is a book worth reading.
We are going to be talking about it in future Cornerstone articles and we would love you to read along with us.
The Arts
Year 8 Production
Our annual Year 8 Production was held during Week 1.
During Term 2, students discovered the world of Fractured Fairytales, analysing then recreating their own scripts based on a traditional fairytale. This process was capably led by Year 8 English teacher, Ms Rachel Partridge. Alongside this, during Music lessons, students created music to accompany their plays, and recorded these segments. This process was overseen by Ms Sally Grennan.
With this foundation work in place, students were privileged to work with Arts Facilitators, Sarah Ogden and Emma Black, as they continued to workshop their presentations. Sarah and Emma are both actors, directors and teaching artists, associated with Queensland Theatre, and brought immense knowledge and skills to their duties. Students benefitted greatly from their guidance and support during the initial workshopping period.
To further heighten the performance experience, students rehearsed and performed their presentations at the George Hogg Performance Venue, an Ipswich performance venue, for family and friends. Thanks are due to Mr Brendan Wingett, for his lighting expertise, and Mrs Claire Ellacott, for her sound expertise.
Benefits of Engagement with the Arts
Study and participation in the Arts improves learning throughout all academic areas.
Arts education increases student engagement. It is hands-on, has immediate rewards, focuses on positive achievements, develops concrete products, and fosters collaboration.
Students learn positive habits, behaviours and attitudes. Learning in the arts involves incremental learning, practice, persistence and patience, which are important for a student’s growth and improvement.
Arts education enhances creativity, on of the top five skills prized by employers.
Students sharpen critical intellectual skills that carry over to learning in other academic subjects as well as to life outside of school.
The arts teach methods for learning language and mathematics skills and expand and enrich learning in other subject areas.
Aesthetic learning is its own reward, as students explore beauty, conflict, power, emotion and life.

WINTER FIXTURES - NETBALL, VOLLEYBALL, HOCKEY & TENNIS
Congratulations to all girls on the way they represented St Peters last Saturday in the first round of QGSSSA Winter Fixtures. It’s always great to get the first games played so our teams & coaches can move forward with their training plans for the season. It was a successful round for all sports against opponents Ipswich Girls Grammar School which was pleasing to see.
Round 2 this Saturday sees us take on Clayfield College. Please watch for communication from your respective sport coordinators and keep an eye on the St Peters App for the weekly draw. Please ensure you arrive on time and in the correct St Peters uniform to prepare for your games. Please ensure you wear St Peters Senior Jerseys or tracksuit tops, no hoodies please. Good luck to all teams.
For the second year running the St Peters Netball Old Scholars game was a huge success with many of our current Netballers joining us in the gym to watch our 2022 Open Team take on our Old Scholars team. The Old Scholars were a great mix of old & new and proved to be a formidable unit to give the Open team a good hit out before Round 1.
With a fantastic afternoon tea provided on by our Netball PSG, the girls enjoyed watching a high-quality game. The experience of our Old Scholars with Kylie Betson (10A & 8B coach) leading the way saw the Old Scholars get off to a great start, but the determination and talent of the youth in our Open team saw them fight back and they were up by 3 at ¾ time. The last quarter was goal for goal before the Old Scholars got a run on and ended up winning by one point, 26 – 25. What a game, the crowd was vocal, and Mr Kotzur was very impressed!!
We are looking forward to next year already and we thank our Old Scholars for joining us to kick start the 2022 QGSSSA Netball season!
Thank you also to Abbey & Hayley for umpiring and Sophie & Tilly for scoring.
