It was a very special occasion on Friday 25 June when Bishop Paul Smith dedicated the second room of our Kindergarten which was completed in March 2021.  Bishop Paul has been Lutheran Church of Australia Queensland District Bishop since June 2015 and it was his last official duty which he was delighted to be involved with.  Bishop Paul and our Head of College, Mr Tim Kotzur, shared with our Kindergarten students and invited guests, the importance of our young children growing up in a Christian community and being provided with excellent educational opportunities. 

It was important for our Kindergarten students to be involved in the service as it was built to provide another outstanding space for them to engage in the kindergarten curriculum.  They sang ‘If I were a Butterfly shared objects that were important to them in their learning and enjoyed celebration cakes during the day.

The new Kindergarten room provides a wonderful addition to the already engaging learning environment.  Our Kindergarten staff are experienced educators working together to guide the development of early learning skills to support their transition to Prep 2022. 

As we move into Term 3, we start to focus on our transition process for our Kindergarten students to enter St Peters Prep in 2022.   Our first step to support our students and parents connect with St Peters Prep is at our Orientation Sessions to be held on September 3. This is a student free day and allows the 2022 families to attend a Parent Information and Student Orientation session.

Our St Peters Kindergarten and Prep teachers meet regularly to discuss beginning of the year Prep expectations and ways to support the transition of the students to Prep.   To ensure we are supporting our students in the best way we can, our Prep teachers have joined a local early childhood network group that meets to discuss positive transition strategies so each student feels confident to enter the Prep program. 

Early childhood education is where the foundations for the future are laid so it is important for our young people to have education programs that provide a strong base for learning in cognitive and social development.  We are blessed that our students are able to be part of excellent education programs at our St Peters Kindergarten and then moving into the Lower Primary classes.

At St Peters Lutheran College, we are a Christ-centred community – and therefore celebrate diversity as a gift; the story of St Peters Lutheran College is the story evolving from as many stories that all the different members of our community bring to the college and weave into the bigger story.

Is it worth celebrating diversity? Is it even worth mentioning?

Yes, it is! And I think it is even something to be proud of and grateful for. It seems like a counter-story to what is happening around the world, where many nations seem to retreat from the global community into their little fortresses that they build for themselves with ever higher walls. There are many places these days where the nations’ interest is put above everybody else’s. The aspiration some years ago of becoming one global village seems to have evaporated. These days, many seem to claim their little island as theirs, building up fences between those on the inside and those they want to keep outside, talking up the divide between the “us” and “them”. Different claims and interests culminate in tension and conflict. Instead of striving to become one worldwide community and acknowledging our interdependence as one human family, many seem to establish themselves as a separate entities, setting themselves apart from the rest, fighting for recognition and power.

At St Peters we rehearse a different perception. As a Christian College we trust Christ, who taught and showed us Gods unconditional love for all. We respond to God’s call to learn to see others as being loved by God in the same way that we ourselves are loved. We learn to see the world as a gift to us that is to be enjoyed and shared so that everyone can live a good life. We learn to see differences as something that leads to a deeper understanding and allows for growth.

Often it is not easy and it certainly doesn’t come naturally.

It didn’t come naturally for Jesus. You may be surprised that also Jesus had to gain a deeper understanding of Gods acceptance and hence his own calling. Jesus, too, had to broaden his perception when challenged by a woman of a different culture and tradition. According to the gospel of Matthew (15:21-28) the desperate plea of this woman to heal her daughter fell on deaf ears. Jesus didn’t respond, did not listen, His friends wanted to send her away. It was embarrassing, the way she cried out to him on the road. But she pursued, insisted to be heard, even when Jesus insulted her and told her, that he was only sent to his own.

 “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.” But the woman replied: “Yes it is, Lord,” she said. “Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.”

Then Jesus said to her, “Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed at that moment.

Jesus, deeply challenged in his perception by the persistent woman, has learned a lesson: the woman allows him to grasp that God’s love is not only for certain people but for everyone; that God’s love is inclusive, accepting without any conditions, bridging the divides, - responding to all people in need!

You and I can learn from this woman how to trust and live according to the all-encompassing love of God that allows us to celebrate diversity and respect every person for who they are! This acceptance and respect for all needs to be rehearsed every day, so that the world becomes a safe space for all Gods people, where everyone feels accepted, where everyone has a place and a contribution to make. Like Jesus you and I are invited to live and rehearse every day what the woman had reminded us of: the unconditional love of God for all Gods people!

God grants us the diverse community at our College to start right here and now! Follow the invitation - and you will see the difference you make!

The Australian Mathematics Competition is being held on Wednesday August 4th. Students are asked to solve 30 problems in 60 minutes (Years 3–6) or 75 minutes (Years 7–12). The problems are designed to test mathematical thinking.

In 2021, the AMC will be undertaken online. Students in Years 4 – 12 will access the web-based platform using their devices, while Year 3 will be provided with access to a device. Prior to testing, compliance tests will be conducted on devices.

Students who have elected to participate will be supervised by Ms Susan Levitt. They are to bring the following to the competition session:

• A compatible device
• Pen/pencil for working out

Students in Years 3 – 6 are permitted the use of a calculator (which is to be brought from home); however, students in Years 7 – 12 are not permitted to use a calculator.

We are excited to bring you the Term 3, 'Partnering with Parents' event through a collaboration with our Parents & Friends Association to join us for a motivational information session, designed to help parents support resilience in their young people.

Through a powerful story of transformation, Ben Pettingill speaks about his personal experience of overcoming one of the toughest adversities a person could ever face; losing his eyesight, overnight at age 16.

Ben’s journey is extraordinary but the greatest lesson is how he discovered a whole new view in which to see himself, those around him and the situations he is faced with. Ben will be working on building resilience with our Junior High students during the day and will follow this with how YOU can HELP your young people embrace adversity and feel empowered.

Ben’s unique style of integrating his personal story and key take away messages from his presentations is highly engaging, encourages participation and leaves any audience truly transformed.

Places are limited at this special event for both current and future Parents, Guardians and Caregivers of St Peters Lutheran College Springfield.

French Week

The first week of July has become known as French Week. This, now annual, week of festivities was begun by Monsieur Anthony Stott, who is dearly remembered at this time of year.

In the Primary School, Mademoiselle Ashleigh Cutcliffe oversaw excellent performances by her students. Bastille Day (which is the French national holiday that honours the storming of the Bastille prison and the start of the French Revolution) was celebrated as a free dress day and French food was on offer through Heart’s Café. Thank you to Ms Charlee Todd for overseeing this.

The French song, La Vie en Rose, by Edith Piaf was the bell tone for the week. In the Secondary School, Bastille day was marked with a French culture Kahoot! during Pastoral Care.

All classes in the Primary School and Junior High learned about the French revolution and its symbols.

Staff were challenged to use French in their classrooms, with prizes awarded for the teacher who used the most French (excluding French teachers of course) and the best dressed on Bastille day. Congratulations to Mrs Lisa Singleton (Prep S teacher) for winning the best dressed and to Ms Mardi Doyle (Music teacher) for using the most French in the classroom. Mr Nick Brayne (5T teacher) won the overall award for use of French in the classroom and for sporting a tremendous moustache!     

As it was Production Week for the Year 8 students, ‘French Week’ was extended a little to include a French Concert incursion by Théâtre Lote for students in Years 5 – 9 on Tuesday, 20 July. Students had the opportunity to sing French classic songs and participate in cultural activities.

Thursday 20 July was Year 10 Careers Afternoon.

The students gathered at the end of the school day to hear from a range of panellists about the many of the different pathways to profession!

Jess Lythall joined us, an ex-SPLC student who is in her final year of Physiotherapy at UQ! She told us all about hard work and how it matters more than any OP. She also shared her experiences of looking for jobs and appealing to employers as more than just a physio.

Alex Mason, an SPLC staff member, shared with us his transition from commercial law, to education. After pursuing Law at UQ and big corporations he realised that he was missing some of the ‘why’ and went after a career in education, one in which he has found immense value and meaning.

Craig Jacobs, an SPLC parent, shared his experience in never attending University but working as an electrical engineer and how he worked his way through registration difficulties but nevertheless achieved success and passion for his work, having now worked on the train from Springfield and the light rail at the Gold Coast and currently working on the Cross River Rail. His greatest piece of advice was “A degree will get you a seat at the table, you in your interview for jobs will have to do the rest.”

An all round fantastic afternoon with many subject teachers joining us for questions, as well as Year 12 students providing advice and Miss Perry holding an ‘Open Studion’ Classroom for Visual Art. 

Last week our Year 1 and Year 2 students participated in a fire education program at school run by the Camira Fire and Rescue Station. Students learnt about good and bad fires, what to do if there is a fire in our homes and the features of a firefighter’s uniform. We were also excited to tour a fire truck and examine the special tools that firefighters use in their job.

Thank you for Station Officer Jane Oldham and her firefighter team for visiting our school and helping us to learn about fire safety.

Year 1 and 2 teachers

On Friday 23 August our Preps celebrated Opposite Day by wearing their pyjamas to school. It was a huge success—we had so much fun doing things in the opposite way and showing off our amazing pyjamas! We played games, sang songs, completed tasks in the opposite direction and ate our lunch at munch and crunch time. Understanding the concept of opposites is important as it helps a child to learn how to compare two different things and to develop a more concrete understanding of a specific concept (e.g. hard vs soft). Learning opposites also improves a child's ability to describe things. It is also a lot of fun!

After an intensive week of rehearsal and workshopping, the Year 8 Production “Murder Mystery Mayhem" took place on Friday 16 July.  The Production represents the culmination of 6 months’ work, writing scripts, creating songs and rehearsing.

The intensive workshopping and rehearsals were capably led by Kurt Duval, and assisted by Emma Black.  Both are actors and teaching artists associated with Queensland Theatre.  Thanks also to Mr Brendan Wingett, Ms Rachel Partridge and Ms Sally Grennan for organising the event.

In a break from tradition, this year’s Production performances were held at North Ipswich Reserve Corporate Centre.  Our thanks go to staff from Ipswich Civic Centre for their welcoming assistance, and especially to our sound technician, Daniel.  On a very wet Friday, this was an ideal venue, with ample undercover rehearsal space and excellent facilities.

Play topics were diverse, ranging from The Murder on Apostle Lane, competitive sisters, card games, and plays set in Ipswich and Brisbane Airport. There was never a dull moment, as intriguing plots unfolded.

Congratulations on your successes, students.  You gave your audience a great night’s entertainment.

What an amazing few days for Old Scholars Ariarne Titmus (2018), Madi Wilson (2011), current Year 12 Springfield student, Mollie O’Callaghan, and Coach, Dean Boxall.

A huge congratulations to Ariarne and St Peters Western Swim Club Head Coach, Dean Boxall, on this incredible achievement of winning a gold medal in the 400m Freestyle! We are so proud and hope you could feel us cheering you on all the way from Indooroopilly! 

Another huge congratulations to our St Peters Springfield student, Mollie (Year 12), and Old Scholar, Madi Wilson (2011), who both joined St Peters Western Swim Club team mate, Meg Harris, to carry their Women’s 4x100m Freestyle Relay team to a record breaking win at the Tokyo Olympics. Not only did the team win Australia’s first gold medal of the Games, but they did so in spectacular fashion, beating the previous world record set by the Australian team at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. Well done, ladies—an incredible achievement. We are so proud of you!

WINTER FIXTURES – Netball, Volleyball, Hockey & Tennis

Round 2 was a mixed bag of results v St Aidan’s. Our Tennis and Hockey teams fought hard against quality opposition; they didn’t get a win but battled hard to the end. Volleyball had a dominant day winning all but one game and Netball with the challenges of wet courts had five from eight wins with six games to be rescheduled over the coming weeks.

Round 3 this Saturday v Brisbane Girls Grammar School is always a tough assignment, but we are looking forward to the challenge.

‘Focus Round’ is this week for our Volleyball girls, we look forward to our students lead by our 2021 College and Sport Captains continuing to build on the amazing spirit they created in the Autumn Fixture season. Students must either wear their playing uniform or formal uniform.

Please watch for communication from your respective Sport Coordinators and keep an eye on the St Peters App for the weekly draws.  Please ensure you arrive on time and in the correct uniform to prepare for your games. Good luck to all teams.

Our Round 2 clash v St Aidan’s saw the fog descend on the rain-soaked courts resulting in the first Round of games being postponed. With the conditions on the improve, we were able to get two games underway in the second Round where the Open team put together a polished performance to post a very convincing win. The conditions continued to improve, and the third Round of fixtures proceeded as scheduled and saw St Aidan’s fight back and post a couple of wins. The final round of games saw the St Peters Senior B and Senior C teams play some solid Netball to post two good wins to finish the day on a positive note.

Last weekend we came up against a red hot St Aidan’s Hockey Program who will be contenders for premierships no doubt. It gave us a good litmus test and showed in both games that our marking of defenders will need to improve. Each team will have some talented players, so it is important that we a) attempt to bypass them when we have the ball, and b) limit their time on the ball in defence. The Junior A team lost 8-1, and the Opens lost 10-2.

This weekend we face another tough opponent in Brisbane Grammar before playing a school of similar ability, Somerville House the in Round 4.

VOLLEYBALL

It was another great weekend for our Girls Volleyball teams against St Aidan’s for Round 2 of the QGSSSA competition. Games began in our home Gym on Friday night with some in-house games were played – the 7C winning the first set against the 8C team before eventually going down in three tight sets. The 8B team won the first two sets against the 7B team before a tight third set was called to a close with just one point separating the teams. The opportunity for these girls to play meaningful sets against competitive opposition will go a long way to helping them develop their play and see our program in a great state for years to come.

Saturday saw the remaining teams venture to our home away from home at Centenary State High where all teams played with focus and tenacity leading to another round of amazing results. The early games saw the 7A team continue their winning way with a strong 3-0 victory, and the 8A girls bounce back from their loss in Round 1 to complete a convincing 3-0 victory as well. The second set of games saw the 9A team put in a dominant performance – worthy of receiving the Team of the Week Award – the girls relished the extra space at the back of the court and managed to unleash some cracking jump-serves losing just 26 points in total on the way to their 3-0 victory. The 10A girls also enjoyed the freedom of a little more space and were able to put into practice some of the new setting/hitting combinations they had been practicing, bringing greater variety to their attack and really paying dividends in terms of putting points on the board. They too ran out comfortable straight set victors.

The two Senior teams featured in Round 3, with the Senior A team proving too strong for the St Aidan’s girls. Many members of the team train with Dragons Volleyball on top of their school training sessions and their ability to defend well and transition into quick offence has been enhanced by this extra practice. The Senior B team fought out a close 2-1 loss. The girls started the third set poorly and fought back from a 10-1 deficit before just missing out on a glorious comeback eventually dropping the set 13-15. It was a great performance and a highly entertaining game to view.

The final two games saw an internal game between the 9Bs and 10Bs. It was a terrific match, with the 10Bs fighting hard despite missing a few players but eventually finding themselves overpowered by a determined 9B team two sets to one. Finally, the Open girls enjoyed their first Saturday fixture of the season. They played as if they had something to celebrate, which they did – Captain Claudia celebrating her 18th birthday with a convincing 25-9, 25-18, 25-10 victory. There were plenty of highlights with tremendous blocking and powerful, accurate hitting on display throughout. All girls are looking forward to a full round of fixtures back home in the St Peters Gym against BGGS in Round 3, with the Open Girls in particular looking forward to their first game on the show court which should prove to be a highlight of the season. As always, congratulations to all players and especially the players of the week – Leela, Stella, Eden, Avi, Isadora, Erin, Amelia, Hien and Zoe.

Congratulations to the all the girls on competing in the first of six Brisbane School Girls Rowing Association (BSRA) Regattas on Saturday.  In challenging, windy conditions, it was fantastic to see the girls finally get in and race. 

Special congratulations to the Year 8 girls on their first regatta. I know they learnt a lot from their first regatta experience and hopefully they had fun with their friends doing it.

Congratulations to our place getters, Ella H (First in the Year 12 Single Scull), Giselle G (Second in the Year 11 Single Scull) and the Year 9 Second Division Crew (Second in the Year 9 Division 2 race).

It was particularly exciting to watch Ella H, in her last year Rowing for the College, win the Year 12 Single Scull in the first race of the 2021 BSRA Season. 

The girls will be competing in another four BSRA lead up regattas before representing and competing for St Peters in the 2021 BSRA Head of the River on Saturday 28 August.

With Round 1 of AIC Basketball and Tennis now complete, we turn our focus to this coming weekend where St Peters will compete against Villanova College in Round 2. Our Senior teams will be playing ‘away’ whilst our Junior teams will be ‘home’ at St Peters.

Special mention must go to all our AIC Tennis teams who walked away from Round 1 will wins. It was great to hear about and witness the enthusiasm and pride our tennis players competed with.

Equally, it was also sensational to watch our 1st V Basketball team compete so vigorously in a tightly contested game against Padua College 1st V. St Peters just fell short by two points in the last seconds of play. Congratulations to all our Tennis and Basketball teams for their determination and enthusiasm in Round 1. It’s been a great start to the season.

Last week, St Peters also nominated over 90 students to compete at the Northern Eagle District Track & Field trials at QSAC. St Peters athletes were extremely impressive both on and off the field of play. We now have many of these athletes (in excess of 50) now selected into the district team to compete at the up and coming Met West Regional trials. Also, congratulation to the 16 athletes who also broke one or several Northern Eagles District Records in their respective events.

Finally, for this weekend’s AIC fixtures, is important to remind all players, coaches, officials and spectators to be wearing a face mask at all times unless ‘in the field of play’ competing, coaching or officiating.

It is also vitally important that everyone (except players) checks in on arrival at their respective sporting venue.
