While Lockdown strikes again, the Olympic games has provided the perfect distraction and one I have found compelling. Knowing our very own Mollie was competing brought Tokyo 2020 closer to home. In these times of COVID-19 we watch world class athletes placing medals around each other’s necks with significantly more meaning than someone in a suit they’ve never met before and most likely, have not heard of. US Gymnast Simone Biles faced negativity as she stepped aside having qualified for her sixth final when she openly admitted she was doing so in the preservation of her mental health. US singer Pink offered to pay the fines of the Norwegian women’s beach volleyball team who defied the archaic misogynistic rule book in their uniform choice to try and desexualize their image and their sport. Our Aussie swimmer from Caboolture who made us all let out a collective gasp when she accidentally exclaimed those words on live television, the Aussie swim coach who stole the show by celebrating in the most unusual way. But then it was said that the New Zealand women’s rugby star Ruby Tui stole the show by being the happiest interviewee. Then there was an Italian high jumper and his rival from Qatar who stole the show with a handshake and most exuberant celebration who decided instead of having a “jump off” they would both share first place, and each earn a gold medal. Some countries stole the show winning their first gold medals ever and the whole world seemed to go crazy over it. I don’t think a single one of them minded that somebody else “stole the show”.
In my perspective, this Olympics has been very different. We’ve seen sportsmanship in the past, ecstatic celebrations, witnessed moments of great courage and gutsy determination. We’ve been awed by stunning wins and relished in endearing moments. But for some reason this time, it all seems a bit different. Perhaps it has been magnified. Perhaps as the world continues to face hurdles, courtesy of COVID-19, we have been forced to face our own mortality. Perhaps as countries, we have been separated for so long with no idea of when international borders might open again. Perhaps we’ve witnessed so much disunity within humanity over the last 12 months with protests over politics, wars, conspiracy theories, vaccination, and lockdowns, we long to see humanity joined in unity at its best. Perhaps not even limited to a sports point of view, but our best sportsmanship, our kindest selves, our funniest selves, our warmest selves, our honest selves, and our Christ-like selves.
Perhaps during this lockdown period when our homes are a little more chaotic, the internet runs a little slower, the fridge door opens and closes more often, and our patience is tested, we can be reminded of our own display of actions and words. Whether they are online or in person, may we carefully consider those who watch and learn from us. May we be reminded of our St Peters relationship responsibilities and the way we use technology while we interact online with one another. As a community, we need to extend care, dignity, and respect as we endeavour to achieve our motto Plus Ultra, ever higher.
Words from Hebrews 12:1-2 come to mind “…since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.”
On your marks

Blessings
‘What blessing do you need?’
I sometimes ask that at the end of a caring conversation. There’s usually a smile, and one or two key things are named. Blessings are powerful. They anchor Christ’s saving presence right into our deep needs and worries. Blessings light a spark of hope within us. Blessings share God’s life with us. Blessings transform, change our whole way of looking at things, bring renewal.
When we do need to tap out, blessing taps us into the deep source of the Father’s loving mercy.
It’s at times like these, in the midst of uncertainty and worry, that we really want to know that we’re not alone, that we’re not left alone to deal with things as best we can. It’s at times like these that we yearn to be blessed. This is what God grants us – blessings each day eve in the midst of hardship and worry. The Holy Spirit joins our spirit to the loving kindness and gentle power at the heart of the Trinity and calls our spirits to abide in him, knowing that we are loved no matter what.
‘May we all receive blessing upon blessing. And may we realise our power to bless, heal and renew each other’ (John O’Dononhue Benedictus – a Book of Blessings p17)
So, what blessing do you need for the rest of this week? Ask, and receive.
Check out The Blessing – a song that our Primary Years knows well from our previous lockdowns.
And please know – our Chaplaincy Team is there for all members of the community – Students, family & Staff. If you’d like us to contact you, send through an email with your contact details to one of us and we will be in touch:

100th Day of School Celebrations
The Preps enjoyed a very special event on Friday 30 July, we celebrated our 100th Day of School! The Prep classes came together for a range of fun, number-related activities. Since the start of the school year, the Prep students have been counting the number of days at school on a 100 number chart, eagerly awaiting the 100th day.
For our special celebration, Prep students came to school wearing some fantastic number-inspired outfits and brought a zip-lock bag of 100 items from home to compare. Creative juices were flowing, with popular activities like making Cheerio necklaces, ‘100’ day puzzle pictures, bookmarks, ‘100 Days Smarter’ crowns and icing biscuits with 100s & 1000s. We had a dance party at lunch time and sang number to 100. Some challenges of the day was to build a pyramid using 100 plastic cups and find the hidden numbers in the Prep area and record the numbers they found. It was a fantastic 100th day!

What a challenging week we are all experiencing, I do hope you are all keeping safe and well during these very unsettling times.
During this time, it is important we all maintain regular exercise and develop a routine for study and learning. We encourage all students participating in Sports running at the moment to maintain some level of training, grab a ball, go for a run and do your best to maintain your fitness where possible.
CONGRATULATIONS
As our Australian Swim Team touched down on Aussie soil again this week. We must celebrate as a community current Springfield Year 12 student, Mollie O and Old Scholar, Ariarne Titmus (2018), for their outstanding achievements at the Tokyo Olympics. Please see below for their incredible achievements and it would be remiss not to acknowledge the guidance, support and determination of our St Peters Western coaches Dean Boxall and Maxine Seear, without them the girls would not have been able to achieve what they have!

OPEN TEAM CELEBRATIONS
In a new tradition to Girls Sport in 2021, we welcomed Mr Kotzur and Mrs Delaney to present the Open uniforms to our 2021 Netball, Volleyball, Hockey and Tennis teams as well as our 1st VIII Rowing crew. The presentations including parents who were able to attend was a celebration of the girls and an opportunity to come together before the season commenced.
When presenting the girls their uniforms, Mr Kotzur and Mrs Delaney spoke about the honour of representing St Peters at the highest level and the role models they are to our younger students. They also spoke about our motto, Plus Ultra and striving for ever higher to give their all to inspire others to leave the sport in a better place than they found it.
We thank Mr Kotzur and Mrs Delaney for joining us and inspiring our girls.
WINTER FIXTURES
Round 3 of the QGSSSA Winter Fixtures last Saturday saw our Tennis and Hockey fixtures completed before the announcement of the South East Qld Lockdown. Netball and Volleyball unfortunately did not complete their fixtures and the remaining rounds were cancelled. Further details of the rescheduling of these fixtures will be advised once the current COVID situation is under control. We thank both the St Peters Community and the Brisbane Girls Grammar School Community for their understanding of this situation.
Round 4 v Somerville House has been deemed an ‘abandoned round’ – Please CLICK HERE to view the statement from the QGSSSA.
Round 3 of the Netball fixtures was always going to be tough as we welcomed Brisbane Girls Grammar School to St Peters. The first round saw a dominant display and wins posted by the St Peters 9A, 8A, 7A & 8B. This was the first time the 7A team had played this season, so it was great to see them fight hard to come away with the win and ensure a clean sweep of the first round. The Open and Senior A teams picked up where they left off last week and left no doubt that they were the better team on the day. The 10A secured the remaining win in their first game of the season before the last round of fixtures was cancelled. We were never going to have it all our own way against the depth of BGGS, however it was a testament to the fighting spirit of the girls that most losses on the day were by very small margins. Winning an overall seven matches to BGGS’ six matches, was well deserved and a pleasing result.
Finally, last Friday afternoon after two weeks of rain we saw the first game for our Year 7 Development girls in the Saints Challenge Cup. Our Year 7 girls took on the WDNA SPLC1 team in a close game filled with lots of fun and learning as many of our girls have never played Netball before. We thank Coach Alanah Miles and the WDNA girls for joining us, we wish them well for the remainder of the season, they are currently sitting on top of the table!
In what was a special presentation at the end of the game, one of our QGSSSA Captains Olivia R (Larika M was unable to join us as she was on court) presented all the girls with a scrunchie which is a symbol of the ‘Pride & Honour’ we feel when representing St Peters on the Netball Court.
We thank the Roberts Family for donating the scrunchies for every member of our QGSSSA Netball Program.
Below is a photo of the girls receiving their scrunchies with our Development Squad Coaches Erin Condon (Year 6 Teacher), Amy Thompson (2018), WDNA Coach Alanah Miles (Year 5 teacher), our St Peters Umpire (an Old Scholar Parent) Marie Moore and Captain Olivia R.
It was exciting for us to see how much it meant to the WDNA girls when all of them wore their scrunchie to play the following day. We can’t wait for them to join our QGSSSA Program next year!

Well what a challenging week we are all experiencing! I do hope that you are all keeping well and staying positive during this lockdown period.
Round 2 of AIC Basketball and Tennis commenced positively with enthusiasm and some good success until we had to call it off early due to Brisbane’s Covid lockdown. We wish to thank both the St Peters community and the Villanova community for their support and understanding of this situation.
This Saturday’s Round 3 of AIC has also been cancelled and we are hoping that we will be able to resume all AIC sport leading into Round 4 on Saturday 13 August. We do ask that all students please check their emails for updates and information.
During this time, it is vitally important that all our students please settle into a regular and positive daily routine of study and learning. We also ask that they also extend this routine to their sports training as well (at home). We encourage all students participating in Basketball, Tennis and/or Track & Field to still maintain some level of training and sport specific exercise. Try to do this within the same training times and days as per a regular week when you would normally be training.
On an exciting and positive note, it was great to be officially notified that 86 St Peters students have been selected into the Northern Eagles District Track & Field Team to compete at the up and coming Metropolitan West Regional Track & Field Trials on 31 August and 1 September. We wish all 86 athletes the best of success and encourage them to keep up the great work at training and stay focused over the coming weeks.
