On 21 July we announced to our community that St Peters Springfield would be entering the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP) Candidacy Phase.
The PYP Programme has many elements which we will unpack with our parent community. This article will focus on the attributes of the Learner Profile.
Learner Profile
The International Baccalaureate (IB) Learner Profile is a set of ten attributes that the IB programme aims to develop in students. These attributes are intended to foster the holistic growth of learners, helping them become responsible, compassionate and internationally minded individuals. The IB Learner Profile is at the core of the IB programme's philosophy and educational approach.
The ten attributes of the IB Learner Profile are:
Inquirers: They develop a natural curiosity, acquire the skills necessary to conduct inquiry and research, and demonstrate independence in learning.
Knowledgeable: They explore concepts, ideas and issues that have local and global significance. They are well-informed and possess a depth of understanding in various subjects.
Thinkers: They apply critical and creative thinking skills to solve complex problems, make reasoned decisions and consider multiple perspectives.
Communicators: They express themselves confidently and effectively in various languages and modes of communication, fostering open-mindedness and understanding.
Principled: They act with integrity and honesty, demonstrating a strong sense of fairness, respect and responsibility.
Open-Minded: They seek to understand and appreciate different cultures, viewpoints and ideas, contributing to a more inclusive and harmonious world.
Caring: They show empathy, compassion and respect for the needs and feelings of others, and take action to make a positive impact on the lives of others and the environment.
Risk-Takers: They are willing to take calculated risks, embrace new challenges and demonstrate resilience in the face of difficulties.
Balanced: They strive for a healthy balance between intellectual, physical and emotional well-being, recognising the importance of maintaining a well-rounded lifestyle.
Reflective: They engage in self-assessment and self-awareness, analysing their strengths and weaknesses, setting goals for personal and academic growth and learning from experiences.
The IB Learner Profile is important for several reasons:
Holistic Development: It promotes the holistic development of students, focusing not only on academic success but also on developing well-rounded individuals who are prepared for life beyond the classroom.
Global Citizenship: It encourages students to be open-minded, caring and internationally minded, fostering an understanding and appreciation of different cultures and perspectives.
Lifelong Learning: The attributes of the Learner Profile emphasise skills such as critical thinking, communication and self-reflection, which are essential for lifelong learning and personal growth.
Ethical Values: The Learner Profile instils ethical values such as integrity, honesty and respect, which are crucial for building a just and harmonious society and align with our St Peters values.
Positive Impact: By developing caring, principled and reflective individuals, the Learner Profile encourages students to take meaningful actions to contribute positively to their communities and the world.

Building Wellbeing & Resilience In Our Children
Ministry
Who is God and who are you?
Have you ever wondered who god is? Did you ever reflect who are you? Strange enough these two questions are inextricably linked.
How we visualise God and which role we ascribe to him, impacts our lives. It also impacts how we feel about ourselves, how we respond to God and how we relate to others. It is also true that the way other people relate to us informs our self-image. What others think of us impacts our own understanding of who and what we are. It can build us or break us, make us confident and strong or fearful and resentful and enable us to embrace life or to hate it.
Sometimes and I am sure many of you can relate to this, people describe you in a way that seems contradictory to how you perceive yourself. It can be confusing. How do we figure out who we are? How do we know who God truly is?
Dietrich Bonhoeffer, an acclaimed Lutheran Theologian, active in the resistance against Hitler and part in one of the major plots to assassinate him, wrote a poem while in prison confinement a couple of days before he was executed:
‘Who am I? They often tell me I would step from my cell's confinement calmly, cheerfully, firmly, like a squire from his country-house.
Who am I? They often tell me I would talk to my warden freely and friendly and clearly, as though it were mine to command.
Who am I? They also tell me I would bear the days of misfortune equably, smilingly, proudly, like one accustomed to win.
Am I then really all that which other men tell of, or am I only what I know of myself, restless and longing and sick, like a bird in a cage, struggling for breath, as though hands were compressing my throat, yearning for colours, for flowers, for the voices of birds, thirsting for words of kindness, for neighbourliness, trembling with anger at despotisms and petty humiliation, tossing in expectation of great events, powerlessly trembling for friends at an infinite distance, weary and empty at praying, at thinking, at making, faint and ready to say farewell to it all.
Who am I? This or the other? Am I one person today, and tomorrow another? Am I both at once? A hypocrite before others, and before myself a contemptibly woebegone weakling? Or is something within me still like a beaten army, fleeing in disorder from victory already achieved?
Who am I? They mock me, these lonely questions of mine.
Whoever I am, Thou knowest, O God, I am thine.'
This reflects what Psalm 139 depicts in a beautiful image: 'You created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully wonderfully made.' It beautifully describes who God is: the one who called us into life and made us unique, the one who breathed his breath into us. It is through him that we are, the Psalm declares. Trusting that you are because God longed for you to be and therefore gave you life, empowers you to be confident as the one you are. You do not need to let yourself be defined by what others say about you or how they relate to you. You are free to live as the beloved son or daughter of your maker.
Be yourself. Nobody is better qualified!
Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken.
Be yourself, because God made you “YOU” and granted you to this world!

Sibling Enrolments 2025
The College is blessed to be experiencing unprecedented growth and interest in enrolment.
Families with children already at St Peters Lutheran College Springfield wishing to enrol a sibling in 2025 or beyond are reminded to submit an online enrolment application for your child if you have not already done so.
Please note that due to the very high demand for places, applications for siblings commencing in 2025 should be received before the end of Term 3, 2023. A link to our online enrolment application form can be found HERE. Sibling interviews are anticipated to commence in Term 1 2024 and continue into Term 2 2024.

FIFA Women’s World Cup – Germany vs South Korea Ceremony
Anvi D (5T) and Ahana D (1T) were selected to participate in the Youth Programme for the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Last Thursday, they walked on the field with the Germany and South Korea players during the Kick-Off Ceremony. It was a wonderful experience for both St Peters’ girls. Anvi and Ahana made our school proud by wearing their school uniform to the pre-match ceremony activities at the stadium.

My Experience At The FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023
Thursday 3 August 2023: Germany V South Korea
As part of the FIFA Youth Program with Commonwealth Bank, my sister Ahana and I had the opportunity to be on International Television to walk with the team Germany at the Suncorp Stadium. We participated in the pre-match ceremony with both football teams. My sister and I had to be at the stadium at 3:00pm to rehearse what we were going to do before we went live. We had food and drinks and we were in a room with other children who were also part of the Youth Programme.
Our chaperone’s name was Frances and she was the kindest person you would ever meet (after my mum of course!). She took care of us before we had to go onto the field with the players. We received our own Adidas uniform set and shoes! Once it was time, we met the German players we would be walking with. My sister, Ahana, was with Svenja Huth and I was with Chantal Hagel, who is a midfielder. To be standing with these professional players and chatting with them made me feel very special. It was an amazing experience, and I will treasure it forever.
Anvi D Year 5T
A week in Primary
Year 6 presented an outstanding parents preparation session for their upcoming trip to Canberra. We are incredibly grateful to all the families who attended and showed their support.
We had a fantastic celebration as our St Peters Kindy turned ten this week. The classrooms were brimming with joy as both the children and staff shared in the excitement.
In an enriching learning experience, Year 1 students visited Lone Pine to explore animal habitats beyond the classroom. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to the parents who joined us on this excursion and contributed to its success. Your participation made the outing even more meaningful and enjoyable for everyone involved.
Drop off and pick up from school
During the week I noted several families parking and walking across Wellness Way without using the crossing. I respectfully ask for this not to occur, as adults we are role models and having students attempt to navigate this without an adult or a lapse of concentration from a driver could lead to disaster. The safest way or your children to arrive and leave school is via kiss and go.
Primary Years uniform
I would like to draw your attention to the 2023 Information guide that sets out the uniform expectations. Please take note of the appropriate shoes that align with our formal and sport uniform. Lace up leather shoes are to be worn with the formal uniform, while plain coloured joggers with the sport uniform. Please be aware that it is an expectation that if your daughter has shoulder length hair or longer that it is tied up and out of their eyes. Plain maroon or white ribbons, hair bands or plain combs are to be worn. All students’ hair needs to be tidy and out of their face. Boys hair is to be kept short unless it is discussed with the Head of Primary. Earrings for girls is one in the lower lobe and the earring is gold or silver studs or sleepers only.
Our uniform is not only a symbol of being part of the St Peters Community, it has been designed to be safe throughout the day while our students perform their daily tasks. If we find that your child's uniform is not adhering to these guidelines a note will go home in their diary, if it continues it will be followed up by a phone call and eventually, they will be sent home until it is rectified.

Year 4 First Contacts Excursion
There’s no better way to learn than immersing yourself and going back in time. That’s exactly what Year 4 students did on Monday, August 7 during their excursion to Moreton Bay Environmental Educational Centre, where students were transported back to 1823 to learn more about the early contact experiences between Europeans and First Nations people.
Students, in the role of Pamphlett, Parsons and Finnegan, journeyed through Quandamooka (Moreton Bay) and investigated the tools, techniques and methods of daily life and survival of local First Nations people. With good teamwork, cooperation, and communication the students created a shelter with just some bark, string, and sticks. They then tried hunting techniques with spears and sticks and learnt how to make a fire! It was a fun and educational experience that the students thoroughly enjoyed!

Year 10 Dignity Project
Throughout Term 2, our Year 10 cohort have been collecting period products for the Share the Dignity women’s charity. Share the Dignity is an initiative that works to make a real difference in the lives of those experiencing homelessness, fleeing domestic violence or doing it tough.
Families are asked to drop off their generous donations at Student Services before the end of August. By participating in The Dignity Project, our students are not only contributing to the wellbeing and dignity of others, but they are also promoting awareness and empathy within our school community. We are proud of their efforts to create positive change!

Performing Arts
Performing Arts News
Introducing Geraldine Campbell
I am thrilled to have begun working at St Peters Lutheran College, Springfield this week. I eagerly anticipate the opportunity to connect with parents, caregivers and students while collaborating on their Performing Arts endeavours. My heartfelt appreciation to Ms Yasmine Powell for her work and commitment to upholding the fort until my arrival.
A friendly reminder about the significance of punctuality for cocurricular and Instrumental music lessons: students are urged to arrive on time and equipped with the necessary materials. As a courtesy, we kindly request a minimum of 24 hours' notice if a student is unable to attend their Instrumental music lesson or cocurricular rehearsals.
3 Top benefits of participating in a Cocurricular Arts Activity:
Teamwork
For a group to make a piece of music or a dance/drama presentation a success, they must work together. Participants must listen to each other, understand what is happening around them, and be prepared to adjust their contribution accordingly. They need to value the contributions of other people, not just their own.
Empathy
Participants need to understand others in a group and share their feelings. The creative experience involves the whole body. Empathy, like teamwork, can be cumulative, growing over time through rehearsals, and performances as the participants support each other through the process.
Grit
Developing a growth mindset is key to understanding the effort makes us stronger and learning is a long-term commitment. Grit requires pursuing a goal and sticking with it even if it takes a lot of work or becomes difficult. It takes many months to perfect a music, dance or drama work to performance standards, this requires daily practice, so commitment is the key.

Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships
Last Friday I enjoyed watching the Rhythmic Gymnastics Championship which is hosted by Moreton Bay College. It was a big day for our team with the bus departing St Peters bright and early and the day finishing with a wonderful celebration at the end of season breakup. Congratulations to all our girls who did us proud and performed amazingly well receiving many top three places, special mention to our Year 7 Freehand group, Nodoka K, Lilja J and Sasha W who placed first and won the Freehand pennant in the first year we have seen this category. The girls looked stunning in our St Peters leotards with amazing new balls and hoops thanks to a P&F Community Grant. Thank you to our coaches who were led by our amazing Head Coach Vanja and special thanks to Mrs Nicole Maynard who did an incredible job coordinating Rhythmic Gymnastics again this season.

Vicki Wilson Final Series
Last Friday and Saturday saw 23 of our amazing Netballers venture to Nissan Arena for the Vicki Wilson Final Series. St Peters fielded both a Senior Team in the Cup division and a combined Years 7 - 9 Team in the Shield division and what a few days it was! Each division consisted of 20 teams including a First Nations Team. Teams were placed into pools to fight it out on day one for positions for the Final Rounds Playoffs on day two.
To participate, St Peters qualified both teams in the preliminary rounds earlier in the year to represent the Met West Region at the Final Series. This was no easy task; 15 teams in each division were vying for two spots to go through to the Final Series weekend. There is a total of 12 regions, each with 15 teams competing for the opportunity to play at the outstanding venue Nissan Arena and to challenge themselves against the best Netball schools in the state.
Our Senior team finished in fourth position overall after a tough game going down to Downlands in the bronze medal match. Our girls, Ella M, Mia H, Tia M, Aldora T, Leilani F, Issy P, Amelia R, Alice H, Georgia M, Charlotta E, Makayla C and Ainsley T performed very well over the two days and played a high standard of Netball, it was great to watch!
Our Junior team, Romi V-B, Willow P, Julia S, Ada M, Alexis T, Eliana E, Amayah L, Elyse R, Emily R, Prisha P and Issy Y (injured) finished in seventh place defeating Marymount College in the seventh/eighth playoff. What a great job these girls did over the two days, the improvement was exciting to watch.
Special thanks to our coaches Tracey and Patti, their teaching of the game of Netball was outstanding. To watch the girls embrace the experience and soak up the pressure of performing at this level was great to see. We are so grateful to have Trace and Patti leading our Netball Program.
To our wonderful parents, thank you as always for your support, it was a great few days for St Peters Netball!
Senior Volleyball Schools Cup
For the first time, our Open Girls team played in the Open Honours division at the Queensland Senior Schools Cup. It was three days of high-quality Volleyball against the best teams in the state. We started the tournament a little inconsistent but as the tournament continued the girls showed great fighting spirit to improve in each match. We ended up in the five-eight playoffs on Sunday. The girls were determined to play a controlled yet aggressive game and never give up on any point. With this strong and positive mentality, we managed to defeat Kelvin Grove 2-1 who we had lost to on Saturday. We then defeated Aldridge 2-1 to finish in fifth place. It was an excellent tournament and thoroughly enjoyed by the whole team.
Winter Fixtures - Netball, Volleyball, Hockey and Tennis
Round 4 was another great round of sport for our girls. Our Tennis, Hockey, Netball and Volleyball teams enjoyed the challenge of taking on Somerville House and did amazingly well.
Special mention to our Open Hockey team who defeated Somerville House in what was an outstanding performance.
Round 5 this Saturday we take on Brisbane Girls Grammar School at our Home venues, we are looking forward to the challenge with all teams getting the opportunity to play.
This Saturday is the first Winter Fixture Sports ‘Focus Round’. We look forward to our students led by our 2023 College and Sport captains continuing to build on the amazing spirit of our Netball girls. Students must either wear their playing uniform or formal uniform.
Please watch for communication from your respective sport coordinators and keep an eye on the St Peters App for the weekly draws. Please ensure you arrive on time and in the correct uniform to prepare for your games. Good luck girls!
Reminder - you must communicate if unable to attend a training session or a game, early communication particularly for a game is very important.
Attendance at training across our sports has at times been poor and there has been no communication from many girls. It is important as we continue to work on building culture in our programs that girls/families understand attendance at training is expected. Of course, we understand missing some training sessions are not avoidable but where possible please arrange appointments outside training times.

A great morning was enjoyed by all at the new Somerville House Home venue SomerFields, our girls and their coaches displayed great sportsmanship and competitiveness on and off the court. We had six wins for the morning and two very close losses, and we were excited to see the 7C team with three development players filling in get the win. As the season progresses it is great to see the development and improvement of the girls as well as their willingness to learn and get better. Well done Girls! - Written by Coach Carynne (filling in as Game Day Manager)
Senior C2 travel to St Hilda’s
Senior C2 had a well deserved win after the long trip down to Southport. They played with great synergy in moving the ball swiftly from one end of the court to the other and held their nerve and responded after a five minute section in the third quarter where they were put under increasing pressure. Special mention to Willow for filling in who played superbly in her first ever game of Netball. - Written by Coach Ben

These girls showed true resilience and we came away with wins in the Junior A and Junior B divisions. Being one player down in our Junior C team, they came so close! Unfortunately, our Senior teams with many players away due to sickness and injury could not match the strong Somerville House team.

Round 5 Draw v Brisbane Girls Grammar School: Saturday 12 August – Please CLICK HERE for the draw
It was an enormously successful day at the Wyaralong Dam last Saturday in so many ways. We hosted the Regatta which was a huge amount of work and effort for the Rowing PSG and our rowing community. That effort was rewarded with more than $20,000.00 being raised which will go towards improving the equipment and experience our rowers have access to across the Girls' and Boys' Rowing programs. It was wonderful to see many of the Boys shed attend as volunteers holding boats at the 2000m start for the Eights and Senior Four races and selling raffle tickets like hot potatoes. Our rowing mums in pink tutu’s directed traffic, sold countless pairs of silly socks and made even the most steadfast sweet tooths happy at the bake sale table. The dads towed trailers, set up tents and catering and flipped burgers with the best of them. A heartfelt thank you from me and every rower in the program. Our leaders Shaun Nodwell, Head of Sport and Lisa Delaney, Deputy Head of College were also present to cheer the girls on, we are very appreciative of their time and support.
While our community hosted like champs, our girls raced like them. Our 1st VIII achieved fourth place in the Open Eight+ race. Our best result in this boat since 2016. Our scullers Robyn M (Year 12), Jess M (Year 11), Poppy Y (Year 10) and Yoyo W (Year 9) all had podium finishes, it was our Year 8 Sculler Sibella H’s first race and she was fourth.
Impressively, our Senior Four+ that has struggled with injuries all year, made a magnificent entrance competing in their first race of the season and winning by clear water from St Hilda’s. Congratulations to Bella B, Charli S, Bridget D, Eva H and cox Esther L for maintaining the faith when even the most optimistic of us was running out of options. Your tenacity and that of Coach Maddy W were rewarded in spades.
We have work to do over the remaining three weeks of the season to get our quad boat speeds up to reach their potential. After several weeks of illness disrupting our Junior shed, our girls are now working hard to transform their exceptional individual performances into fast crew boat performances. The countdown is on the Head of the River on Saturday 26 August.
The second QGSSSA Track and Field Meet will be held this Friday 11 August at UQ. We would like to see as many girls as possible sign on and attend this meet. Girls have been sent an email with the link to sign on, please do so as soon as possible.

Visit from an Old Scholar
It is such a pleasure when our Old Scholars come back to visit us here at the College. Over the last few months I’ve had a lot of visitors.
This is Ella Shergold who graduated in 2021.
Ella was very special to us here, she left school in Year 11, with the idea that school wasn’t for her, and intent on pursuing something trade or certificate related. She was always very passionate about Law.
When Lockdown started in 2020, we reached out to Ella to see if she wanted to come back to School now that we were online. She rejoined us in Term 2 2020 and made it through until the end of Year 12.
Ella is one of our major success stories, showing that even though it can be hard, especially to feel motivated about finishing school, we can do hard things.
Ella went on to do a Certificate 4 in Crime and Justice, scoring one of the best results for her cohort. She is now studying Criminology at University and wants to work in Youth Advocacy.
It is a pleasure to know Ella and we are so incredibly proud of the work it took for her to find her way, this is the best part of being in education, seeing the kids transform into flourishing humans!
