“We need to create environments—in our schools, in our workplaces, and in our public offices—where every person is inspired to grow creatively. We need to make sure that all people have the chance to do what they should be doing, to discover the Element in themselves and in their own way.” – Sir Ken Robinson
The world we live in is changing at an increasing rate. Across climate change, global wealth distribution, population growth, technology advancement and shifting political paradigms, humans are grappling with complex challenges. Justin Trudeau said, “The pace of change has never been this fast, yet it will never be this slow again.” Hence, we must build capacity in our young people to empower them to bring their unique gifts to help discover new ways of being and working.
Evolved from Carol Dweck’s research on growth mindset is benefit mindset. A benefit mindset builds on a growth mindset, when we understand that our abilities can be developed – and we also understand we can transform towards a more caring, inclusive, and interdependent perspective. It is called “benefit” mindset because it is concerned with the life-long process of learning how we can be the transformation and realise our unique potential in a way that serves the wellbeing of all.
Developed by Ash Buchanan in collaboration with a global community of contributors, benefit mindset is grounded in the understanding that fulfilling our potential is about more than how smart, driven or growth oriented we are.
In a benefit mindset, we understand we are not separate individuals going it alone. We are interdependent beings who belong to a massive global ecosystem – the community of life – and every one of us has a role to play in creating healthy conditions on the planet, no matter our interests, passions, or expertise. Therefore, more than believing we can grow, it is also important we take responsibility for transforming how we come to understand our place in the world and realise our potential in a way that affirms life and supports others with doing the same. For more information - https://benefitmindset.com/
The benefit mindset has been the governing theme of our assemblies for the first few weeks of Term 3. Specifically, we have been challenging students to consider a small action they can perform to benefit someone else in their lives. I am keen to hear if you have seen these actions at home.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my introduction to the St Peters Springfield community in my role as the new Head of Secondary Years. I look forward to meeting more families during the upcoming events for the remainder of the year.
Sincerely,
Dom Piacun Head of Secondary Years

Personal Bests @ St Peters
This week I signed over 400 Academic Personal Best or Academic Improvement Awards for Semester 1 in the Senior School alone. I personally sign each of the certificates because it reflects the value that I and the College place on students striving to achieve their very best in all they do, but most particularly in their learning.
The College’s motto, Plus Ultra (Ever Higher), reminds our students to pursue their personal bests daily in all that they do – be it in the classroom, on the stage or on the sports field. This focus on achieving personal bests is very much in keeping with what those Old Scholars and former Staff who have gone before us were focused on. Mr Bill Lohe, the College’s second Headmaster, in a letter he wrote in 1978, eight years after his retirement stated that, "the idea (Plus Ultra) is as I see it not to make the other person the measure of one’s achievement, rather the individual is called upon to rise above themselves - the motto places no limit on rightful aspiration and endeavour."
Achieving a personal best is not easy. It should be challenging. It should take us out of our comfort zone. To attain a personal best requires hard work – nothing worthwhile in life is ever achieved without hard work. It also requires commitment – seeing things through to the end. And personal bests also require persistence – keeping going even in the face of setbacks or difficulties.
Congratulations to all our young people who achieved their academic personal best last semester. With Term 3 in full swing I encourage all of our students to work hard to achieve their personal best in all that they do…..and I look forward to the day that I have the privilege of signing an Academic Personal Best Certificate for each and every St Peters student.

Arise Christian Community Church
Arise is a Lutheran community that meets at St Peters, Springfield. It’s a place where you can come to know God’s love through Jesus, and find light and hope for your life, and connect with other families from St Peters and the wider community.
In our service you will hear God’s word, sing, pray and share in Holy Communion if you want to. There’s a message for the kids too.
Please use the pedestrian footpath alongside our blue courts or walk along the edge of the oval near the Performing Arts building to access Kindy, Prep or Year 1 classrooms after 8.05 am. This is also important at pick up times in the afternoons. Our HPE staff ( Primary and Secondary) use the oval spaces from Lesson 1 to Lesson 7 and want to ensure the safety of all St Peters community members. Recently parents and students have walked through HPE lessons which can impact on the safety of our community as well as stopping the HPE lesson. Thank you for your support.
Firefly login change
The login process for Firefly has been updated and now aligns with our other systems. The SAML option has been removed and the Microsoft 365 login has been set as the default. This means that when you click on a link to a Firefly page it will automatically use your logged in St Peters Microsoft account or prompt you for the login for this system.

Parenting Myths Debunked
Have a look at this list of problematic parenting paradigms that have persisted over the last generation or two.
Good parenting means self-sacrifice.
Kids come before your partner.
Parents can't be friends with their kids.
You can judge a person's parenting by how their child "turns out".
Kids should fall into your pre-child lifestyle.
You will love and connect with your baby instantly.
Teenagers are stupid.
As a parent, it's your job to make your kids happy.
Believing the myth that it's your job to make your kids happy can lead to all kinds of dangers, such as
An increased likelihood of making short sighted decisions.
Overwhelm from the impossible task of satisfying your child's craving for happiness.
Exhaustion from the heaviness of that burden.
Setting your child up to fail.
Your child not learning that happiness can only come about intrinsically.
So... what are you responsible for then?
Teaching your child to find their own happiness.
Teaching them how to understand their emotions.
Teaching them how to have positive relationships.
Teaching them how to do hard things.
Teaching them to be responsible for their own emotions.
Parenting Myths
Isn’t it difficult being a parenting in this era? You have a great many hats to balance, a great many jobs to do and advice coming at you from every angle.
This week in our Happy Families membership, Dr Coulson debunks some parenting myths and I found some of them really interesting. Profesionally, Justin’s article got me thinking about the most common statement that happens in conversations in regard to future pathways. Currently I am having many conversations with parents, and sometimes those conversations go in the direction of what they want for their child in a career pathway, and they just want their child to choose what ‘makes them happy’.
I often catch myself wondering about this statement.
And the kind of pressure this statement puts on our young people. Do you, as an adult, make decisions based on your happiness, and how does that go for you?
I can tell you from personal experience that not many of the decisions I have made have had the outcome of automatic happiness.
Instead, I have a cup of coffee bought for me by a colleague, and that makes me happy. A student says good morning you look nice today, and that makes me happy. I finish a really good book, happiness overload. I go for a walk and see both the sunrise and the moon setting, happy!!!!
When we seek happiness, we often find it elusive, happiness is a choice, it’s a state of mind, it’s an act of gratitude, of service. It’s found in relationships.
I wonder if when we decide to put our child’s ‘happiness’ ahead of other things, compassion, resilience, opportunity, adversity… whether we inadvertently set our children up for false expectations and maybe even, less chance of daily joy and happiness.

It is customary for eisteddfodau to conclude with an Awards Ceremony, to recognise the exceptional talent and achievements of deserving students. Maxim V – Central Church Award for Prepared Bible Readings Adam V – The Anne Briggs Prize for Australian Verse Shanaya D - Encouragement Award, 9 to 12 Years Taashya P – Encouragement Award, 13 to 15 Years
This is a recognition of the hard work of both the students, and their tutor, Mrs Kathy Wilson.
Many of our school students performed during this eisteddfod, and unfortunately there needs to be a minor correction from last week’s report. Anvi D was awarded 3X 1st placings, 2 X 3rd placings and VHC. Apologies to all affected by this small oversight.
Congratulations and thanks to all.
Burgundy Band Performance
After some focussed learning during rehearsals, Burgundy Band performed for Primary Assembly on Wednesday (yesterday). The band played two pieces, Russian Folk Song and The Dreidel Song. Burgundy Band is the school’s elementary band ensemble, and for some, this was their first public performance. The ensemble was conducted by Mrs Mardi Doyle.
Goodbye
After nine years at St Peters Springfield, I am moving onto new challenges and opportunities, so this is my final Cornerstone article. It has been a thrill to work with the students, whether in class or in ensembles, the Private Tuition tutors, and the staff here at St Peters. Many thanks to parents for supporting your children by enabling their participation in ensembles and events. While I am excited about my next venture, I take with me many treasured memories of interactions with students and staff, and performances at events. I hope students continue to grow their involvement in the arts and wish everyone all the best.

World Junior Track and Field Championships
Congratulations to Toby S in Year 11 and Laylani Va’ai (Past student 2021) who last week represented Australia at the World Junior Track and Field Championships in Cali, Columbia. Toby went into the competition as one of the lower ranked High Jumpers in the field. She jumped exceptionally well in the preliminary round to make the final where she placed 8th overall in the world! This is a sensational performance by Toby who cleared a best jump of 1.80m. RHYTHMIC GYMNASTICS CHAMPIONSHIPS
Last Friday I enjoyed watching the Rhythmic Gymnastics Championship which is hosted by Moreton Bay College. It was a big day for our Rhythmic Gym team with the bus departing St Peters bright and early and the day finished with a wonderful celebration of the season at the end of season breakup. Congratulations to all our girls who did us proud and performed amazingly well in our new stunning leotards. Thank you to our coaches who were led by our amazing Head Coach, Phoebe, and special thanks to Mrs Nicole Maynard who did an incredible job coordinating Rhythmic Gymnastics again this season.
Congratulations to the 2022 Awards winners…

VICKI WILSON NETBALL STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
Last Saturday and Sunday saw 22 of our amazing Netballers venture to Nissan Arena for the Vicki Wilson Netball Queensland State Championships. St Peters fielded both a Senior Team in the Cup division and a combined Years 7-9 Team in the Shield division and what a few days it was! Each division consisted of 20 teams including a First Nations Team and teams are placed into pools to fight it out on day one for positions for the Final Rounds Playoffs on day two.
To participate, St Peters qualified both teams in the preliminary rounds earlier in the year to represent the Met West Region at the State Championships. This was no easy task; 15 teams in each division were vying for two spots to go through to the Final Series weekend. There is a total of 12 regions, each with 15 teams competing for the opportunity to play at the outstanding venue Nissan Arena and to challenge themselves again the best Netball schools in the state.
Our Senior team finished in eleventh position. Our girls, Ella Mac, Sian Z, Sophie T, Aldora T, Leilani F, Annie I, Makayla C and led by captains Renee C, Milly T & Mia B-W gave their all over the two days and played a high standard of Netball, it was good to watch!
Our Junior team, Amelia R, Romi VB, Grace D, Willow P, Ainsley T, Julia S, Charlotta E, Elliotte C, Emily R, Maddie P, Prisha P & Aiyana P finished in ninth place. What a great job these girls did over the two days, the improvement was exciting to see. They were unlucky not to qualify for the 1-8 playoff, missing out on percentage but coming together to finish day two with three wins.
Special thanks to our coaches Tracey & Patti, their teaching of the game of Netball was outstanding. To watch the girls embrace the experience and soak up the pressure of performing at this level was great to see. We are so grateful to have Trace & Patti leading our Netball Program.
To our wonderful parents, thank you for your support, it was a great few days for St Peters Netball!
SENIOR VOLLEYBALL SCHOOLS CUP
Congratulations to our Open Team who last weekend played in the Year 12 Division 1 competition at the Senior Volleyball Schools Cup. The girls went through the 3-day tournament undefeated, defeating teams from Gladstone, Caloundra, Sheldon, All Hallows, Canterbury College and Kings College. Across all six matches, the girls did not lose a set although there were a couple of tight ones! They came away with the gold medal and the MVP of the tournament was awarded to Maisie P. Well done girls.

AIC Boys Sport
Luke Donatini, Boys Sport Coordinator l.donatini@stpeters.qld.edu.au
How fantastic it was to be able to experience the greatness of the Commonwealth Games over the past few weeks. I have nothing but praise and admiration for all our Australian athletes who competed in Birmingham and represented their country with such pride, passion and sportsmanship.
Last weekend we completed Round 3 of AIC Basketball and Tennis and I must especially commend our St Peters Year 8 Tennis Players for their manners, conduct, sportsmanship, and overall attitude. It was wonderful to receive several positive reports on how your Year 8 boys conducted themselves. This is great to hear and what we encourage every student at St Peters to aspire to be like.
This weekend, we do not have any AIC fixtures due to the Brisbane Exhibition week and we will resume with Round 4 of AIC Basketball and Tennis the following weekend (Saturday 20 August).
St Peters are working hard now in preparation for the AIC Track & Field Championships which will be held in Term 4, Week 1. It is great to see good numbers of boys participating in training for Track & Field. We strongly encourage all Years 7 to 12 boys to get involved and attend any of the Track & Field training sessions that they can. Being involved and participating in events which encapsulate running, jumping, and throwing can only benefit their overall sporting prowess and skill development.
Being part of the St Peters Track & Field Squad in 2022 will also assist in developing, fostering and establishing greater bonds with their peers whilst growing our college’s spirit and culture.
Dress Standards at AIC Sporting Fixtures
An important reminder to all students about our College’s expectations surrounding correct dress standards at AIC fixture games for both players and student spectators:
All students playing Basketball and Tennis must be dressed in the correct playing attire (including socks). If the weather is cool, only the St Peters track top and track pants are to be worn.
Footwear – joggers are to be worn at all times by those students participating in AIC sport. No open footwear (eg. Slides or thongs etc) are to be worn at any time.
All student spectators are to be dressed in St Peters winter formal uniform. Students who have played earlier in the day can be dressed in the sports uniform to support. Students attending AIC games who are not dressed in the correct St Peters attire will be asked to leave.
St Peters Track & Field Lead Up Meets
St Peters Track & Field training is now underway, and we are already experiencing really good participation numbers at weekly training. Similar to last year, we are really excited for the 2022 AIC Track & Field season, and we are sure it will not disappoint.
