It may be only August but preparations for 2020 are well underway. Year 10 students are about to start their Senior Education and Training meetings with Mrs Johnson and Year 9 students are selecting their elective subjects for next year. Teachers are finalising their internal assessment tasks for the new QCE and Year 11 students have submitted their applications for leadership positions in 2020.
For most students, stepping into new pathways is exciting as opportunities open before them. However, some students, often unsure of future careers, are concerned that they will not select the ‘right’ subjects. It is important for teachers and parents to reassure students that tertiary study, employment and careers are far more flexible spaces then they once were.
Research indicates that most people will have three or four different careers throughout their lives and therefore it is more important for young people to acquire skills that are transferable rather than master a defined body of subject-specific content. Problem solving, creativity and critical thinking are valued by 21st century employers far more than the ability to regurgitate historical facts. All curriculum subjects in Queensland foster the growth of these skills so students can be reassured that whatever subjects they choose, they will be well prepared to succeed in the workplaces of the future.
Preparing students for external assessment in 2020
The introduction of external assessment in General subjects is a key feature of the new QCE system. To give school communities a sense of what external assessment will be like, the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) has published sample papers on its website at: https://www.qcaa.qld.edu.au/senior/senior-subjects. They're located in the Assessment tab on each syllabus page.
We will incorporate these sample resources in our teaching and learning program to help our students prepare for next year. In the meantime, students and parents are encouraged to view the sample papers.

USQ High School Mooting Competition
Well done to Grace, Khushi, Sep and Zac for representing St Peters Springfield in the USQ Legal Studies High School Mooting Competition for 2019. This competition was based on a complex criminal law scenario of drug trafficking and sentencing issues. The students had to rely on a set of facts, case law, legislation and appeal the sentence based on parity issues as well as appeal the seizure and sale of assets as public interest. Both teams advocated for the Appellant and Respondent parties in the appeal.
Congratulations to the Year 11 team who progressed to the quarter final held at the USQ Moot Court in Toowoomba and finished a close second to Centenary Heights State High School.

Each of the sessions will be conducted as follows: Years 3 – 4 | 8:15 - 10:20am Years 5 – 10 | 11:00 – 12:30pm
Science
ICAS Science does not test knowledge of science although the questions may assume some knowledge appropriate to the students’ age. All the information that the students need to respond to the question is provided in the stimulus.
The papers cover content on:
Earth and Beyond
Energy and Change
Life and Living
Natural and Processed Materials
Students are assessed across the key scientific areas of:
Observing and measuring: Noting and measuring features of items and phenomena
Interpreting: Interpreting data in diagrams, tables and graphs
Predicting and concluding: Inferring information from data
Investigating: Experimental design, use of controls and notion of ‘fair test'
Reasoning and problem solving
English ICAS English assesses reading and language skills in a range of contexts. The following aspects of texts are assessed and reported:
Text comprehension
The writer’s craft in selecting particular text types, vocabulary and techniques
Vocabulary
The questions require students to locate, identify, sequence, explain, interpret, analyse and infer information in and about texts. Students read a variety of texts which narrate, describe, explain, argue, persuade and review. These include extracts from picture books, novels, poems, play scripts, transcripts of interviews, letters, diary entries, advertisements, web pages, feature articles, opinion pieces and comic strips. These texts cover a range of topics and may include tables, diagrams, maps and other visual information.
Mathematics Students are assessed across five key skill areas:
Algebra and patterns: Patterns of numbers, relationships between numbers and the use of symbols to stand for unknown or variable numbers
Chance and data: Mathematical treatment of data and statistics
Measures and units: Properties of the physical world that can be measured, the units used to measure them and the process of measurement
Number and arithmetic: Types of numbers, their properties and number operations
Space and geometry: Properties of two-dimensional and three-dimensional space
In 2019, ICAS competitions will be undertaken online. Students in Years 4 – 12 will access the web-based platform using their devices, while Year 3 will be provided with access to a device. Please note, the iPad mini is not supported by the ICAS testing platform. Prior to testing, compliance tests will be conducted on devices. Students may find it helpful to familiarise themselves with the testing platform using the Practice Interaction Test.
Students who have elected to participate will be supervised by Ms Susan Levitt, Miss Lauren Head and Miss Samantha Fulcher.
Further information, including practice tests, can be found at the UNSW Educational Testing Centre website: https://www.eaa.unsw.edu.au/

SILKSTONE EISTEDDFOD
Congratulations to Burgundy Band and Gold Band for their performances at Silkstone Eisteddfod last week. Burgundy Band received a Gold Award for their presentation in the Novice section, while Gold Band received a Silver Award for their performance.
In his adjudication comments, Dr Mark Kruger remarked on the rhythmic drive and forward momentum of Burgundy Band’s performance, and appreciated that all performers appeared to be having fun. He also enjoyed the energy of Gold Band’s performance, and the strong sense of pulse that was provided by “an excellent percussion section”.
This was an outstanding achievement for our young band participants, as this is the first time they have performed at an eisteddfod. Congratulations also to Ms Krist-elle Hill, who conducted both bands.
PRESERVICE TEACHER
We welcome Mr Aidan Nosenzo to the Music Department. Mr Nosenzo is a preservice teacher, currently studying at UQ, and he will be with us for six weeks. Sport
St Peters Springfield Sport
Well done to all students who represented the College over the weekend in QGSSSA, AIC and WDNA fixtures. There were many great performances over the weekend across all sports and teams.
Our QGSSSA Open Netball and Tennis remain undefeated after the opening 4 rounds with solid wins against St Margaret’s and to the Open Girls Hockey team who recorded a win also. There were good wins for most of our Junior Netball teams while Hayley J won all her games as part of the Junior A Tennis team. It is great to see so many of our girls achieving success while representing the College. We also congratulate Kayla T, Anneliese S, Arabella G and Tiare R who represented the College at the QGSSSA Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships last Friday. While results were not what the girls were after, they represented the College with pride. The girls put in many hours learning their routines and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Well done ladies!
Our boys also continue to achieve success in AIC Basketball and Tennis. Last Saturday against Padua, our Year 5 – 12 Tennis teams went through the day undefeated winning all age groups in a dominant display. Special mentions to Rahul K in Year 5 who has not lost a set so far this season, Jacob F in Year 7 who continues to win most games as well as Michael K in Year 9 who is having an outstanding season in First Tennis. Not to be outdone, there were a number of good wins in AIC Basketball across the weekend. Congratulations to Thomas G in Year 5 whose 5A team have won all games they have played this season as well as the 2nd’s and 10A’s. Liam S and Allystar G in the First V Basketball continue to put in good performances as they chase their first win of the season.
It was great to see so many girls at the first QGSSSA Track and Field Meet last Friday night. There were some fantastic performances across all events with some standout performances from Toby S jumping 1.60 in High Jump, Ella-Jaye H-L winning the 15 years Triple as a 13 year old, Erin G and Aldora T throwing some brilliant Discus and Shot Put and Shanteal H running a good 400m.
A reminder to all Track and Field athletes that as we are at the half-way point of Term 3, it is essential that you are attending training. CONSISTENCY is the key! Girls Track and Field meets have already begun and with boys meets starting in a few weeks, it would be great to see more of you at training. Please see Mr Lohe with any questions regarding training for QGSSSA or AIC Track and Field.
QGSSSA Girls Sport
Rhythmic Gymnastics
Coordinator: Mrs Phoebe Anderson
Well done to all the girls who competed in the 2019 QGSSSA Rhythmic Gymnastics competition last Friday. All girls represented the College with pride and their 13 weeks of consistent training, perfecting their challenging routines was on display.
A special mention must also go to our Year 12 girls, who as a group have been so heavily involved in Rhythmic Gymnastics over the years. Your presence will be missed next year but hopefully you have inspired our younger girls to follow in your footsteps.
A final thanks to our coordinator, Mrs Phoebe Anderson, for her passionate leadership and all our coaching staff. Special thank you also to our Girls Sports Coordinator, Mrs. Rodman, who did an enormous amount of organisational logistics behind the scenes and headed out to support the girls on the day.
Rowing
Coordinator: Mr Peter Hicks
Last week, due to the high winds and dangerous conditions, the Rowing Regatta was cancelled. It was fantastic to see the camaraderie and energy at the ergo training on Tuesday afternoon and we look forward to seeing the girls on the water this Saturday.
Winter Fixtures
As we approach the middle of the season it is extremely important that attendance to training and games remains high and any absence is communicated early with both coach and coordinator. So far the 2019 season has demonstrated a good team camaraderie and this needs to continue for the second part of the season. It is no coincidence that those teams who have consistent attendance to training and games are the teams showing the greatest improvement.
Individual fitness is also an important facet of these team sports. Girls are encouraged to keep up their general fitness in addition to their specific training sessions as being fit greatly assists skill execution during games. Cross training with swimming, running or using the gym are all effective ways to continue to strive for individual personal bests in team sports. General fitness also assists the individual complimenting good study habits, forcing effective time management and establishing good habits for life.
Round 5 sees our fixtures head out to Morton Bay College. A reminder that Hockey is played at the UQ turf fields near the UQ Aquatic Centre and Tennis is at Churchie for this week. All draw times and venues can be found on the St Peters App.
Hockey
Coordinator: Mr Cameron Glass
Last week we travelled to Windsor Park, Albion, to take on St Margaret’s. They only had Junior and Opens teams so our Seniors could have a well-deserved sleep in. Both games were played on grass, and considering we have trained only on turf for the past two years we did remarkably well. The Junior game was a super tight affair, eventually going down 4-2. The game was quite congested in the middle of the field so it will be a continued goal to spread the ball wide and utilise the speed of Ella-Jaye. Opens took a bit of time to adjust to the grass but once we scored our first goal, it allowed the team to settle into a rhythm and we continued to dominate the game. At the full time whistle the score was 6-1. Big well done to Lara T for her first ever hat-trick of goals. Congratulations also to the strikers (Sacha, Georgie and Ava) who had brilliant games.
Netball
Coordinator: Mrs Anne-Marie Champion
Round 4 v St Margaret’s in the wind was challenging yet very rewarding. In a sign of respect, both St Margaret’s and our Opens team wore black arm band in honour of Tracey Bruce's Dad, it was a great reminder of how Sport can unite us all. With eight wins and a draw, our Opens team had to fight hard to come away with the win, our 10A team have their first win of the season, our 8B team fought back from seven down to win by one. Our 9A team after a slow start managed to get the draw, our 7A, 7B, 8A, 9B, 10B teams all enjoyed comfortable wins. Well done Girls.
This year thanks to Tracey, Marty Stolberg and Jeremy Lohe the Springfield girls have been attending their Skills Training session at the Springfield campus every Tuesday morning. It has been a big success and the Girls and Parents appreciate training at school and a morning off catching the bus.
Please find below the draw for this weekend’s Round 5 fixtures v Moreton Bay College. Venue: Moreton Bay College Courts & Gym – 450 Wondall Road, Manly West.
All teams playing MBC will play at MBC at either their courts (C on map) or their Gym (G on map). Our Senior A2 team will play Brisbane Girls Grammar School at Ambiwerra at 10.00am and our 8C team have a bye. Girls this week our coaches will be looking for the player with the ‘BEST VISION’, thanks again Tracey for organising these awards.
Please Note: Girls please arrive a minimum of 30 mins prior to start time to allow plenty of time to find your team and commence warm up. Please also ensure your nails are cut, all jewellery is removed and you wear your full SPLC Netball uniform, this includes SPLC bike pants.
Please watch for further details re our Round 6 fixture v St Hilda’s down the Gold Coast. A bus will be provided for those girls that require transport so keep an eye out for an email from our Girls Sport Coordinators with sign on details for the bus.
The following teams are scheduled to play down the coast – Opens, Senior A1, Senior B v Sommerville House (we are trying to get this game moved to Brisbane), 10B, 9B, 8B, 7A, 7B & 7C.
Tennis
Coordinator: Mrs Deborah Wilson
Round 5 against MBC will be played at the Churchie tennis courts. Girls and parents are reminded to check the St Peters App for all details and venue times.
Volleyball
Coordinator: Mr Joshua Singh
This week, we were up against St Margarets, MBC and Somerville House. Great to see once again our teams doing so well. Congratulations to the 7A, 8A, 10A, Senior A and Opens who all recorded wins against St Margarets. The 7B, 8B, 9A, 9B, 10B, Snr B1 all had byes. This weekend presents a tough round against MBC away at their venue. The following girls have made the Team of the Week:
Team of the week:
Audrey L (10)
Hailey G (11)
Ophelia T (8)
Bella (11)
Charlotte CP (7)
Claudia L (Opens)
Annika S (10)
A special mention goes to Annika who had her best attacking game so far, Kianga B who has played an excellent game for the third week in a row. Claudia L (Opens) who passed and defended really well and Hailey G who put her focus at training with free balls into game play and took control of the back court.
Senior Schools Cup: The 10As and Opens went away for three days last week for the Senior Schools Cup. What a delight it was to watch these young ladies perform at a big stage and walk away knowing they have beaten schools who train all year for this tournament. Congratulations goes to the Opens girls who came fourth overall in their Year 12 Division One competition and for the Year 10s who stepped up and played in a Year 11 Div
Track & Field
Coordinator: Mr Shaun Nodwell
Well done to the many girls who attended last Friday’s first Track & Field Meet for 2019. The results from this meet so early in the season are very pleasing and show increased depth in our squads in recent years. To be considered for the 2019 QGSSSA Track & Field team girls must be attending at least one training session a week (preferably more) and Friday night meet.
This Friday 16 August, we witness a Swedish relay which is a mix of distances ranging from 100 to 400metres. Signups for the bus have been sent in our girls sports email.
Badminton
Coordinator: Jeni Gagen
The 2019 Badminton season is almost underway and girls who have signed up met on Thursday lunch time to gather further information about the season.

We hope you have a great week in sport,
Kelli Rodman and Kerry Schreiber Girls Sport Coordinators
AIC Boys Sport
There is a direct correlation between attendance at training and results, so keep this in mind as you have an obligation to be at training. There are many boys (and families), who are moving heaven and earth to fulfil their commitments to trainings and games, and then there are a few who unfortunately are missing sessions because of reasons such as 'sleeping in' or are simply hoping that no one will notice that they aren’t there. Please make sure that we are all getting to our trainings and games and if we cannot make a commitment, our boys are communicating with their coach and coordinators early to avoid confusion.
Round 3 of AIC Basketball was played last weekend against Padua College which, certainly provided some memorable results for many of our teams. Nine wins in total were recorded overall including our currently undefeated 5A team and also 7D, 8A, 8B, 8C, 8E, 10A, Thirds and Seconds. The 10A, Seconds and Thirds matches all came down to the final possessions with our boys showing tremendous poise under pressure to walk off the court victorious to the roar of a very supportive home crowd. These results are a credit to all of our players and coaches who have committed to preparing themselves each week and setting high standards. If this work continues there is no doubt that our boys Basketball program here at St Peters will continue to grow and improve further with even more positive results. Special mention to our dedicated coaching mentors who have provided our AIC coaches with valuable guidance both during training sessions and matches.
This week is a full BYE week for all AIC teams including Basketball, with no matches being played. Team training sessions however continue as usual with the exception of Years 5 and 6 teams who will be training on Friday afternoon (16/8) from 3:30pm AND Wednesday morning training sessions are cancelled due to the public holiday this week. Round 4 of competition continues on the weekend beginning 23 August vs Villanova College.
Tennis
Coordinator – Mr Stuart Delaney s.delaney@stpeters.qld.edu.au
At the being of the season the first games that we circled was that against Padua. We knew we would have a tough round on our hands, particularly in the older age groups. The day lived up to all expectations and for the first time in many years the 1st IV were challenged with the games all square and St Peters winning on games for and against - four matches all, six sets all and St Peters winning 63 games to 49. It was great to see the top two players in our association; Zack L (St Peters) and Casey Maguire (Padua), battle it out over the weekend.
As the games being so close, this is where a team attitude comes to the forefront. Tight games to both Zack and Jordy were superseded by fantastic wins to Matt and Michael. Congratulations to the team for a gritty win.
There were many other tight games on the day including the 7As and 5Bs who won five sets to three and 29 games to 27 respectfully.
All teams must be congratulated with all levels and teams winning form Year 5 to the Opens.
Well done to all students who have been regularly attending our School Track & Field trainings throughout the week. It is great to see many of our athletes having additional training outside of these trainings as well to add extra hours to their preparation. Our numbers at training are looking good, however, I would like to see more attending. Remember, if you have represented the College in the past at the AIC Championships; if you performed well at the inter-house carnival; if you have been identified by Sports House or HPE staff; if you ran in the AIC Cross Country Championships or; if you are interested in training with a view to make the AIC team – you are strongly encouraged to attend training!
Volleyball
Coordinator: Mr Darren Grose d.grose@stpeters.qld.edu.au
Training for the 2020 AIC Volleyball season as well as the Australian Volleyball Schools Cup, will begin in Term 4 – Week 1. Details to come very soon!
In the interim, the Queensland Academy of Sport will be running a Volleyball camp during the September Holidays at Craigslea State High School specifically aimed at 6-13 year old boys and girls. At this camp, talent identification will also be done and kids will be given an opportunity to become a part of the Junior Volleyball Development Program that the QAS have been very successful in running in previous years – many of our current Australian Representatives have been a part of this program.
Enjoy the Ekka bye round this weekend everyone and I look forward to next week’s trainings and Round 4 against Villanova College.
