A SAINT FOR LIFE…
“Oh when the Saints, go marching in…”
We have all heard the war cry around the Colleges and on the Sporting Fields. For me, my first experience of the St Peters War Cry was when I visited the Springifeld campus in 2023. The Year 12 students, on their last day, joined together on the Concourse for one last time, while the College students looked on from the balconies. Three weeks later, at graduation, the Year 12 students also received SPOSA badges to officially recognise their movement from being students to being Old Scholars.
SPOSA is the St Peters Old Scholars Association and aims to connect St Peters Alumni, so they will stay in touch, share stories, and support the student community through Alumni events, bursaries, and networking; and encouraging an ongoing and enduring connection with St Peters. Furthermore, since the founding of St Peters Lutheran College in 1945, the Old Scholars of St Peters have been collecting and preserving objects and information for future generations. The collection contributes to the conservation of the history and heritage of St Peters Lutheran College.
A SHARED HERITAGE AND LINKS
SPOSA is an example of the shared heritage between St Peters Springfield and St Peters Indooroopilly. Important to note also, Margaret Curnow, a famous name in our shared community and great supporter of St Peters Springfield, is a St Peters Indooroopilly Old Scholar and is also the Patron of SPOSA.
The links between campuses and SPOSA continue with our staff. Dr Michelle Thygesen (1990) and Chaplain Ben Lyons (2009) are both Old Scholars of Indooroopilly and Ms Stephanie Chettle (2012) is an Old Scholar of Springfield, all of whom are staff at Springfield. You will identify these members of staff by the colour of their lanyards. While most staff have maroon lanyards for their name badges, any Old Scholars will have a gold lanyard to signify this connection.
JOINING SPOSA AND UPCOMING EVENTS
Students who have been enrolled and attended the College for at least one full term are eligible members of SPOSA, automatically. Meaning that, at this point, there are more than 17,000 Old Scholars of St Peters. SPOSA meets once per month at the Centre for Learning and Innovation at the Indooroopilly campus and all eligible members are welcome.
At their August meeting, an invitation for SPOSA to hold a meeting at St Peters Springfield was extended and is scheduled for Tuesday 15 October, 2024 at 6:00pm. It will be held in the St Peters Springfield Junior High Precinct and will be preceded by a Springfield Campus Tour from 5:30pm at Main Reception. It would be amazing to see St Peters Springfield Old Scholars at the event to engage with the broader SPOSA community.
Further to this, on the weekend following this meeting, St Peters Springfield will hold their third (ever) 10-year SPOSA Reunion with the class of 2014 invited back to campus to reflect, reminisce and reconnect.
STRENGTHENING OUR CONNECTION
In light of Mollie O’Callaghan (2022) sharing the gold medal position on the podium with Ariarne Titmus (2018), we are privileged to have this shared connection and heritage through SPOSA. As Springfield continues to grow, we hope to continue to strengthen this bond and have a shared connection through being “A Saint for Life”.
