St Peters Springfield has had a very strong focus on Wellbeing & Care with the introduction of our REVAMP Wellbeing Framework in the past two years. The framework is based on the work of psychologist, Dr Martin Seligman’s PERMA+ Wellbeing Framework, and allows our students to understand the aspects that promote positive wellbeing as well as harness strategies to achieve this.
Recently a colleague was talking about the importance of focusing on ‘glimmers’ for our wellbeing. Coined by Deb Dana, a psychotherapist who specialises in complex trauma, glimmers are small moments in our days that spark a sense of joy and fit very neatly with the P part of REVAMP, that is, having 'Positive Emotions'.
Glimmers are the opposite of triggers and are important for our mental health toolkits since they help our nervous system as they keep us out of flight and fight modes, regulate our moods, soothe us and tell us that we are safe, calm, connected and well. They are basically a 'gentle hug' for our nervous system and have a very positive impact on wellbeing.
Glimmers might include the smell of coffee, cuddling a pet, suddenly hearing your favourite song playing or receiving a smile from a stranger. I know that our staff, students and parents would experience many glimmery moments at St Peters Springfield also. Over the past few weeks, glimmers might have emerged when: seeing our Preps and Year 12 completing special activities on the oval together for their 100 Day marking points, seeing the spirit within our Secondary Years students as they yell their war cries together, listening to the stories of excited students as they head back from Year 5 camp and various excursions and about what they have learned; seeing the amazing dances, acts and short films of our students at recent exhibition evenings; talking to our eSports enthusiasts about their competition at the EKKA; and listening to our new Chapel Band perform beautiful music at Chapel.
Because humans have a negativity bias, oftentimes, glimmers can pass by. Therefore, we must always maintain our awareness and notice glimmers with intention to ensure we savour glimmers and the warm feelings they bring to us. Further, we need to work on spotlighting glimmers more and more so that we can become better at activating the rest/relaxation branch of our nervous system.
There are many ways that you can make the most of glimmers. A quick search reveals that you can:
Savour glimmer moments – stay in the moment and notice your positive emotions, thoughts and feelings.
Keep a journal of your glimmers and even triggers – this way you know what activates your feelings of safety and calm and you know what activities stress/threat responses; you then know what to move towards and what to move away from.
Experts suggest going 'Glimmer Hunting'. This means we set a goal of finding perhaps 1-4 glimmers a day; intentionally savour these moments; and actively consider the positive emotions and sensations these glimmers bring.
Consciously connect with people who are nurturing to be around and create calm and warmth.
Snuggle with pets.
Listen to music – create a playlist that reminds you of amazing events and ignites positive feelings.
Glimmers is an easily remembered concept for our little people right through to our big people. I encourage you to talk to your children about the glimmery moments they find at St Peters Springfield and beyond and to find these moments in your own days also.

Continuing Enrolment 2024
Dear Parents, Guardians and Caregivers
We wish to assure you that planning at the College is well underway to ensure effective educational programs, staffing and administration at our school in 2024. To assist us with finalising details it is important that the College is aware of our expected student numbers.
My child will continue as a student at St Peters Springfield in 2024
There is no requirement for the families of students who will remain at the College in 2024 to contact us. Unless the Principal or Enrolments Office receives specific written advice from you that your child is leaving at the end of 2023, we will assume your child’s enrolment will continue and as such, their place at school in 2024 is secured. Therefore, families who will remain at St Peters into 2024 do not need to take any action.
My child will leave St Peters Springfield at the end of 2023
We do wish to remind families that, as per the terms of your enrolment contract, if you do not intend for your child to remain a student of St Peters in 2024, you need to advise us in writing before the start of Term 4 2023. Whilst we would very much appreciate your advice as soon as you are able, the final date for acceptance of notice without penalty (term’s fees in lieu of notice) will be Monday 23 October 2023. Please note that there can be no flexibility with regard to this contractual requirement due to the high demand for places at the College.
If you have any questions regarding continuing or new enrolment with St Peters, please contact the Enrolments Team by email at s.enrolments@stpeters.qld.edu.au, or by phone at 3470 3888.

Preps and Year 12 100 Day Celebrations
The Preps enjoyed a very special event with the Year 12’s on Thursday 10 August as we celebrated our 100th Day of School and the Year 12’s 100 days left of school! The grades came together for a range of fun activities. We made paper planes, we played running and skipping games and we ate fairy bread with 100’s and 1000’s.
For our special celebration, Prep students also came to school wearing some fantastic number-inspired outfits and brought zip-lock bags of 100 items from home to compare. The Preps particularly enjoyed making 100 day glasses and ‘100 Days Smarter’ crowns. We sang all the numbers to 100. We had a wonderful fun filled day.
Meanwhile, the Year 12’s used teamwork, skill and some good old fashion grit to get through an Amazing Race-styled activity course courtesy of the Year 11’s. The 12’s finished off celebrations by coming together to share a meal that was inspired by food that took them to a comforting and inclusive space.

Wellbeing on Wellness Way
Self-Compassion
They often say that discomfort is the price of admission to a meaningful life. One of the major sources of discomfort is being self-critical. But this doesn’t need to be such a source of struggle. There are three weapons to use against negative thinking in terms of our own experiences. So instead of beating ourselves up and saying things like 'you should have known better' or 'you should be working out more', we can lean into accepting who we are and where we are.
1. Mindfulness
Recognising stress or struggle in the body, without judgement or over-reaction. Taking a moment to give yourself time and attention.
2. Self Kindness
Being Supportive toward self (no self-criticism). Treat yourself like you’d treat a friend.
3. Connectedness
Everyone makes mistakes and experiences difficulty. You’re not alone.
‘Should be’ feeling?
There is no greater unhelpful thought than that of ‘should be’, you are what you are and there is no more expectation on you to be any different. Learning and leaning into self-acceptance is the cornerstone of resilience and authentic happiness.
With the rise of social media – and keeping up with the Jones’- it’s no surprise that over a third of us judge ourselves for having bad emotions – we also shame other people and try to present solutions to these negative emotions. Everyone has negative emotions – it’s necessary and part of living a full life, there is nothing wrong with feeling sad, angry or guilty. Emotions move us to make change, they charge us to create something or fix something. When we shame ourselves for a normal human reaction, we cause anxiety and fear. Self-compassion is the answer.
Why is self-compassion important?
1. It makes people happier
Practising self-compassion leads us to have more optimism, gratitude and better relationships.
2. It helps you feel less stressed
Self-Compassion is a powerful antidote to self-criticism and perfectionist thinking that can lead to anxiety and depression.
3. It can help people demonstrate greater resilience
Self-compassionate people bounce back more easily from setbacks and learn from their mistakes
Ultimately, knowing that our emotions don’t drive us and they don’t own us gives us the ability to be self-compassionate. Leaning into ourselves with kindness and non-judgemental thinking is how we begin to truly understand that we can have thoughts but we are not our thoughts and that we are ok just as we are.

Prep Excursion Friday 11 August
On Friday 11 August, Prep students, teachers and volunteers attended an excursion to the Ipswich Art Gallery where we enjoyed creating with clay. The hands-on activity in a studio space where children can imagine and make art together. Other children’s clay creations were on display to provide some inspiration and all the art materials are provided. It’s the perfect way to encourage children to explore and stimulates their own imaginations. Then we had lunch at Ipswich Queen’s Park Nature Centre. We walked around the centre and saw a range of Australian wildlife, including wallabies, dingos, turtles, wombats and a range of bird life including an eagle. The centre has been created to represent local bushland and flora communities.
We then took a short walk to Ipswich Little Theatre we watched ‘Go to Sleep Mia’. This performance was timed to fit in with Book Week. We watched in delight as Mia was visited in her bedroom by all the characters from her favourite book. We saw Captain Hook, Gingerbread Man, Mary Poppins, Goldilocks, Snow White, The Very Cranky Bear and Tigger from Winnie the Pooh, to name a few. We also enjoyed singing along to the many songs. The Preps were enthralled right from the beginning to the very end. It was a magical performance. Our excursion generated much conversation and thought from the Prep Students. We had the most wonderful day.

Year 1 excursion to Lone Pine
Our Year 1 students had a wonderful time going to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary as part of their inquiry unit into Australian animals and their habitats. The students spent the day exploring, feeding kangaroos, spotting koalas, and identifying reptiles. They participated in a Backyard Explorers lesson, where they had a chance to get up close to a variety of animals and they even got to pat a koala! The students have returned to school feeling excited to write their very own book with new facts they have learnt about animals and their habitats.

Year 5 Camp – PGL Kindilan
Last week, Year 5 students travelled to Kindilan for their Year 5 Camp. During the day, students participated in cooperative games, a giant swing, climbing ladder, lake canoeing, raft building, archery, abseiling, rock climbing and teamwork challenges. At night, students completed a reflector course in the bush and participated in a mini disco, wacky races and a 'Year 5 Has Talent' show. It was three days of learning new skills and challenges, team building, cooperation, communication and problem-solving skills. Students had an amazing time and it was a wonderful experience shared with everyone involved!
Please see below some personal reflections from students in Year 5.
Nick Brayne and Cathy Jeffries Year 5 Teachers
My Year 5 Camp Experience
“The best part of camp was I could do activities I had never tried before. In addition, I could express my feelings about nature and survive without technology. Abseiling was the most memorable part because……I could basically fly.” (Amitoj S, 5T)
“Camp was fantastic and I personally think everyone enjoyed it. Some things were scary but I faced my fears and had so much fun.” (Sophie H, 5T)
“Something that I will always remember about camp is that I got a bullseye in archery!” (Eeshani C, 5T)
“Just to wrap this up – a big shout out to all those who worked so hard to prepare all the wonderful food and accommodation. You did a great job and overall I had a wonderful and memorable experience at Camp Kindilan.” (Mei-Li Rose B, 5T)
“The most challenging part would be conquering my fear of heights through abseiling, the giant swing and rock climbing. I also learned how to do canoeing for the first time. I realised trying new things can find you new hobbies.” (Abigail J,5T)
Primary Years Disco
Are you ready to dance the night away? We cannot wait to see you all at our Primary Years Disco on Friday 18 August. There will be a coffee van on-site on the night, along with disco lights and lots of great music!
Prep – Year 3 Disco: 4:30pm-5:30pm Years 4 – 6 Disco: 6:00pm-7:00pm
Did you know that 98% of Australians are engaging in some form of the Arts and that Arts and creativity are highly valued and significantly more people are now recognising the range of positive impacts on lives, communities and National Identity.
I have enjoyed meeting the fabulous Instrumental Music staff and the students over the last few weeks as they have been involved in classroom music, private tuition or cocurricular activities. It has been heartening to witness the level of commitment by all to authentically engage, encourage and enthuse our young performing artists. Please keep up the good work as we progress throughout the year. Remembering Teamwork, Grit and Empathy are the key to success.
Private Tuition Studio Concerts Week 7
The Studio Recitals are a wonderful opportunity for students involved in the Private Tuition Program to gain invaluable performing experience. The performance uniform for these recitals will be the formal school uniform, (Drama students exempt) with clean shoes and hair neat and tidy. Performers are to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the start of the concerts, so that instruments can be unpacked and tuned, ensure any music required for the accompanist is supplied, performers can be seated in performance order and thus be ready to commence the concerts on time. The order of the performances will be displayed outside PA 1 so please check this before entering the venue.
All performers will be required to introduce their item, stating their name, the title of the piece and the composer. At the conclusion of the performance, students will be required to bow to acknowledge the audience.
I am looking forward to hearing the student performances and celebrating the great learning thus far this year. Thanks to the Instrumental Staff and Ms Powell for organising this event. Details are as follows: please note the change of venue for these concerts as this space is more intimate and affords the piano students the opportunity to perform on the grand piano.
Dates: Monday, 21 August & Friday, 24 August Venue: PA1 Times:
3:00pm - 4:00pm: Prep - Year 2
4:15pm - 5:45pm: Years 3 - 6
6:15pm - 7:30pm: Years 7 - 12
Arrival: Please assemble and wait outside the PA precinct (15 minutes beforehand) Dress: Formal Winter School Uniform (drama students exempt)
New Music Ensemble Primary Years
This term, Mrs Schmeider has begun a new choir for Years 2 and 3 called Poco Voce. If your child/ren are in Years 2 or 3, they are welcome to join for free! Rehearsals are Tuesday mornings at 7:30am in PA03.
Please complete the attached form to register your child.
String Instrument Storage
The day that students bring their stringed instruments to school can they please be placed against the walls or on the shelves in the PA Corridor rather than in the middle of the walkway as they are a health and safety hazard. Thankyou.
Ensemble Rehearsal Punctuality
Scheduled rehearsal start times are when the students should already be unpacked, tuned, changed and the rehearsal begins. It is quite disruptive to the flow of the rehearsal if students are constantly entering the room. Can I please ask that students arrive at least 5-10 minutes earlier so maximum rehearsal time is achieved. This is particularly an issue with before school rehearsals.

Sport
AIC Boys Sport
Last weekend we completed Round 4 of AIC Basketball and Tennis and I must especially commend our St Peters Tennis Players for their manners, conduct, sportsmanship and overall attitude. It was wonderful to receive several positive reports on how our Tennis conducted themselves. This is great to hear and what we encourage every student at St Peters to aspire to be like.
This weekend, we do not have any AIC fixtures due to the Brisbane Exhibition week and we will resume with Round 5 of AIC Basketball and Tennis the following weekend (Saturday 26 August).
St Peters is working hard now in preparation for the AIC Track & Field Championships which will be held in Week 1 of Term 4. It is great to see good numbers of boys participating in training for Track & Field. We strongly encourage all Year 7 - 12 boys to get involved and attend any of the track & field training sessions that they can. Being involved and participating in events that encapsulate running, jumping and throwing can only benefit their overall sporting prowess and skill development.
Being part of the St Peters Track & Field Squad in 2023 will also assist in developing, fostering and establishing greater bonds with their peers whilst growing our College’s spirit and culture.
Dress Standards at AIC Sporting Fixtures
An important reminder to all students about our college’s expectation surrounding correct dress standards at AIC fixture games for both players and student spectators:
All students playing Basketball and Tennis must be dressed in the correct playing attire (including socks). If the weather is cool, only the St Peters Track Top and Track Pants are to be worn.
Footwear – joggers are to be worn at all times by those students participating in AIC sport. No open footwear (eg. Slides or thongs etc) is to be worn at any time.
All student spectators are to be dressed in St Peters winter formal uniform. Students who have played earlier in the day can be dressed in the sports uniform to support. Students attending AIC games who are not dressed in the correct St Peters attire will be asked to leave.
St Peters Track & Field Lead Up Meets
St Peters Track & Field training is now underway, and we are already experiencing really good participation numbers at weekly training. Similar to last year, we are really excited for the 2023 AIC Track & Field season, and we are sure it will not disappoint.

Commonwealth Youth Games
Congratulations to St Peters Springfield Year 12 student Toby S who has won the gold medal in High Jump clearing 1.78m on her second attempt at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad.
Incredible effort Toby, well done, we are super proud of you. We wish Toby all the best as she continues to train hard to qualify for the World Junior Championships.
Equestrian
Year 7 students Jessica B, Annika D B and Jemma H recently represented St Peters at the Somerville House hosted Show Jumping event. The girls had a great day with some personal bests and showed great team spirit. Jessica B who had recently competed at the Southeast Queensland Regional Championship and finished with some great results rode for the first time on her new horse. Jemma H stepped up to the challenge of a new height and Annika D B competed for the first time in an Interschool Queensland Show Jumping competition. We are very excited to have Jess, Annika and Jemma representing St Peters at Equestrian.
WINTER FIXTURES - NETBALL, VOLLEYBALL, HOCKEY & TENNIS
Round 5 saw all our teams play against Brisbane Girls Grammar School, this is never an easy assignment. The day finished with mixed results, but our girls certainly gave their all representing our College.
Special mention to our Open Hockey, Netball and Volleyball teams who enjoyed great wins and our Open Tennis who have been hindered by injury and illness did their best against quality opposition.
Round 6 this Saturday we take on St Aidan’s at their home venues, this is another great challenge, and we are looking forward to it!
Please watch for communication from your respective sport coordinators and keep an eye on the St Peters App for the weekly draws. Please ensure you arrive on time and in the correct uniform to prepare for your games. Good luck girls!
Reminder - Communication if unable to attend a training session or a game, early communication particularly for a game is very important.
Attendance at training across our sports has at times been poor, and there has been no communication from many girls. It is important as we continue to work on building culture in our programs that girls/families understand attendance at training is expected. Of course, we understand missing some training sessions are not avoidable but where possible please arrange appointments outside training times.
Date Claimers:
Round 6: Saturday 19 August v St Aidan’s (Away) Round 7: Saturday 26 August v Brisbane State High School (Home) Round 8: Saturday 2 September v Ipswich Girls' Grammar School (Away) Round 9: Saturday 9 September v St Hilda’s (Home)
Round 5 of the competition focused on Netball as we welcomed Brisbane Girls Grammer to St Peters. To ensure the spotlight centred on the sport, the Opens, Senior A and 8A teams played their games in the Indoor Gym whilst the other games were played on the familiar Harts Road Courts.
As to be expected, the competition on Harts Road Courts was tough. Although the 7A team put up a good fight early, the opposition proved too strong. There was no lack of determination shown by the 7B, 7C and 8B teams, but a fighting spirit alone was not enough to secure a victory in Round 1. Although the result was a little closer in the gym, the 8A team went down by four.
Round 2 started on a positive note, with the Opens team playing their best Netball of the season. A dominant performance across all four quarters resulted in an impressive and well-deserved win. The 9A team started strong and continued to build on their performance to also post a big win. The 9B, 9C and 8C teams were all involved in close, fiercely contested games, but unfortunately, BGGS proved too strong and gradually pulled away to win all three games.
In the final round, the Senior A girls played some great Netball and dominated the opposition to post a big win. The Senior B team did not have it all their own way and were involved in hard fought tussle before pulling away to secure the win. The Senior C1 team were not so fortunate but went down fighting. Tough hard-fought games seemed to be the nature of the day and the 10A encounter was no different. Although they went into the second half with a narrow lead, BGGS proved too strong in the last quarter and earned the win. The 10B1 team were able to capitalise on a good half time lead and post a comfortable win to finish off the round.
Round 5 also saw our 10B2 and Senior C2 teams travel to Windsor Park to take on St Margaret’s. The 10B1 team played with only six players due to injury and illness, but never gave up. Coaches Carynne and Chloe gave them goals that they achieved. The Senior C2 team may not have secured the victory but they played with spirit and Coach Ben said they played out the game in the heat. We are super proud of these girls that represent St Peters in the St Aidan’s draw each week.
Although we suffered more losses today than wins, the girls are to be commended on the way they conducted themselves. The determination, tenacity and fighting spirit showed, even in defeat.
Congratulations to our Round 5 Award Winners, the girls who produced an ‘out of the world performance!’

Round 6 Draw v St Aidan’s: Saturday 19 August – Please CLICK HERE for the draw
Congratulations and well done on two great games against BGGS. Not too long ago we used to get beaten easily by BGGS so to come away with a victory and a narrow loss is a great achievement.
This week we play St Aidan’s at their home ground Ambiwerra. The fields are on grass, which will be a foreign surface for most of the girls, the biggest difference will be the speed of the game and the need to hit the ball rather than push it when wanting it to travel more than ten metres.

Morganne Lidgard
They always say that as a teacher you always run into past students in the most unlikely places.
I certainly had that experience earlier this year.
I found myself in hospital for a period of time, and crossed paths with some wonderful nurses including Morganne Lidgard.
Morganne graduated from St Peters Springfield in 2013. She was one of 13 kids to graduate in this tiny year level that was the result of the introduction of Prep. Morganne is also working to coordinate this year's 10 year reunion for her cohort.
Morganne is now a fully qualified Midwife – and as I lay in hospital feeling not the best, I was very content to learn that it was my suggestion that she pursue this pathway.
Morganne now also has a beautiful little girl and is living life to its fullest!
