God has blessed us richly as we welcomed a new granddaughter into our family four weeks ago and we are cherishing the moments we get to spend with her.  Last week I was fortunate to spend some time helping out in a range of ways to ensure my daughter could focus on her baby as well as herself.  Over the week my daughter checked in to see if they were doing things the right way.  My answer was that they were –each baby is different and they have already started recognising her different needs (cries!) and the best ways to support her.  As they navigate the new parent role, they have already worked in partnership with medical staff to ensure their newborn is developing as she should in these early days.  As their precious bundle grows, they will continue to work in partnership with so many support networks to ensure success in all areas of her life.

This importance of partnerships is important in all educational settings. Teachers value the information parents share with them to better understand the ways their children learn, what their interests are and their goals — all working together to enrich student learning and wellbeing. 

Positive partnerships ensure the success of students in all areas of their development – social, emotional, educational, spiritual and physical.  Students need to feel cared for – that there are people who believe in them and they can be a success in their goal setting and pathways they choose.  

Part of our partnership support has been providing information to parents to support their children’s health and well-being.  Over the years we have sent home a program supported by our P&F which gave parents strategies across a wide range of areas.  We are at present looking into a new program to support the health and well being of our young people.  Options to include parent information via webinars, information links and even a Q&A option. 

We value the partnerships we have with all our families.

Of course God and science can go together.  Science developed only in the Christian West, because committed Christians were convinced that God created everything to work well, it was not desecrating creation to explore it carefully - rather it was honouring God to search out how things worked. Then there is also the powerful concept of us being welcomed by God as co-creators (Genesis 2:15), ‘Come and work with me, use your brains, use your gifts, help take care of creation and each other.’ As I sometimes tell students in chapels, ‘God trusts you. I am absolutely sure of that. Why? Because you are still breathing!’ Then I get these weird looks, and I explain, ‘You are alive, God trusts YOU with the gift of life. God actually secretly likes you and wants to work with you. Go for it.’

Back to National Science Week and the theme of Oceans. 

The Bible has also lots of fascinating things to say about oceans. In Genesis 1:9 oceans are the womb that gives birth to the land and allows life to grow and develop. Lots of rich thinking there to test and explore.

The Hebrew folk were not sea-lovers or salt water sailors. They regarded oceans as dangerous and untrustworthy.  In Psalm 104:9 there is the verse about God setting limits to the ocean so that there would never again be a destructive flood that wiped out the nations. Are our constant activities threatening sea boundaries and sea levels, or does planet earth with its molten core and oxygen atmosphere still have the amazing powers it has shown over countless aeons to make micro adjustments that allowed life to develop and continue? Check out the title for the satellite that monitors ocean levels.

In spite of Hebrew fear of the sea, they balanced that with the understanding that God had tamed the sea and for God it was like an unruly baby that he had lovingly placed in its playpen (Job 38:8-10 read creatively). The sea was also a play area for God, where even the fierce Leviathan sported with God (Job 41:5).

Along with deep respect for the power of oceans, I think many of us treasure the playful and restorative element of the beach and water.

Enjoy the beach and the ocean, enjoy Science Week, and reflect on how you are a positive co-creator when it comes to ocean care.

Science

ICAS Science does not test knowledge of science although the questions may assume some knowledge appropriate to the students’ age. All the information that the students need to respond to the question is provided in the stimulus. The papers cover content on:

• Earth and Beyond
• Energy and Change
• Life and Living
• Natural and Processed Materials

Students are assessed across the key scientific areas of:

• Observing and measuring: Noting and measuring features of items and phenomena
• Interpreting: Interpreting data in diagrams, tables and graphs
• Predicting and concluding: Inferring information from data
• Investigating: Experimental design, use of controls and notion of ‘fair test’
• Reasoning and problem solving

English

ICAS English assesses reading and language skills in a range of contexts. The following aspects of texts are assessed and reported:

• Text comprehension
• The writer’s craft in selecting particular text types, vocabulary and techniques
• Vocabulary

The questions require students to locate, identify, sequence, explain, interpret, analyse and infer information in and about texts. Students read a variety of texts which narrate, describe, explain, argue, persuade and review. These include extracts from picture books, novels, poems, play scripts, transcripts of interviews, letters, diary entries, advertisements, web pages, feature articles, opinion pieces and comic strips. These texts cover a range of topics and may include tables, diagrams, maps and other visual information.

Mathematics

Students are assessed across five key skill areas:

• Algebra and patterns: Patterns of numbers, relationships between numbers and the use of symbols to stand for unknown or variable numbers
• Chance and data: Mathematical treatment of data and statistics
• Measures and units: Properties of the physical world that can be measured, the units used to measure them and the process of measurement
• Number and arithmetic: Types of numbers, their properties and number operations
• Space and geometry: Properties of two-dimensional and three-dimensional space

In 2020, ICAS competitions will be undertaken online. Students in Years 4 – 10 will access the web-based platform using their devices, while Year 3 will be provided with access to a device. Please note, the iPad mini is not supported by the ICAS testing platform. Prior to testing, compliance tests will be conducted on devices. Students who have elected to participate will be supervised by Ms Susan Levitt and Ms Lauren Head. They are to bring the following to each of the competition sessions:

Prep-Year 6 Curriculum Leader: Assessment and Reporting

Origin’s popular Little Big Idea competition launched today for 2020 which encourages school age children to get involved with STEM and share their great ideas on assisting the community, improving people’s health and wellbeing, and creating a more sustainable future.

Unlike last year, we can’t send our Little Big Idea winners on an innovation adventure to NASA in the USA this year. Instead, the three brightest inventors will each receive $10,000 towards their education or further developing their idea. Plus, the top 12 finalists will receive $1,000 and one-on-one mentoring developed by Engineers Without Borders Australia.

Having only 100 days remaining of their 13-year school journey was reason for our Year 12 students to celebrate last week. We are very proud of the resilience and character shown by our Year 12s in a year full of unexpected challenge. Finishing well is now the priority, both as leaders in our school community and as they head towards their mock exams in preparation for Term 4 external assessments under the new system. May God bless them in their studies and as they discern, shape and pursue their plans for life beyond St Peters.

The Sporting Wheelies and Disabled Association visited the College last week to show our students some skills with Wheelchair Basketball and Boccia. Preps played Boccia which is played competitively at national and international level by athletes with a number of neurological conditions involving a wheelchair. 

Our students and teachers were put through their paces to familiarise themselves with wheelchair basketball ahead of a high stakes match between the 2020 Seniors and staff. It was a great game with Year 12 showing spectacular game skills, however, teachers won by one point. Looking forward to the match next year!

This week is National Science Week, Australia's annual celebration of science and technology. It is an exciting time at St Peters when we acknowledge the contributions of Australian scientists and encourage our students to develop an innovative and inquiring mindset, as they use scientific understanding to pursue solutions to real-world problems. Due to restrictions, we have been unable to celebrate across the year levels as in past years. However, we have been industrious in our classrooms this term in the lead up this special week. 

Prep – Push and Pull

The Preps have been exploring the effects of the forces push and pull. At the beginning of the inquiry, the Preps investigated how different animals and objects move. They also read 'The Enormous Turnip and re-enacted the story by trying to pull the turnip out. The children had to 'pull and pull' until the enormous turnip popped out! The Preps are now using this understanding to explore, design and create objects that can be pushed or pulled.

Year 1 – Insect Communities

Year 1 have focused on Biological Sciences. They investigated the external features of insects, recognising parts such as the head, legs and wings and described how each body part has a particular purpose, including movement, feeding and protection. Year 1 was highly engaged while participating in hands-on learning experiences, including examining different insects, their body parts and their habitats. The students were excited to make the conceptual connection that some insects, such as bees and ants, are like people, in that they live in communities where the members each have specialised jobs to do. Year 1 have now embarked on an exciting project where they will apply this understanding to 'invent' a new insect, describing its body parts and habitat.

Year 2 - Materials

In Year 2, this term, the students explored a variety of materials, considered their properties and described their purpose. They contemplated materials and their properties and used engineering skills when designing a lunchbox that could carry an orange and a sandwich, making sure it was durable and easily wiped clean. During this integrated Science and technology inquiry, the students tested their object and evaluated and reflected on their decisions.

Year 3 – How Has Technology Changed Our Lives?

Year 3, students have been investigating the inquiry question: 'Has technology changed our lives for the better?' The children explored what life was like in the past and compared it to the present. They have also compared the living situations of people in third-world countries. Through this inquiry, students have recognised that people in third-world countries have no access to clean drinking water. They have come up with the idea that heat and solar panels could be the answer to solving this problem. Last week, they investigated materials that best conducted heat through a hands-on experiment with three different types of spoons (plastic, metal and wooden). They are very excited to be putting this knowledge towards the next step in the unit, which will entail them creating solar ovens.

Year 5 – Astronomy

Year 5 students are holding the universe in their hands! They are learning about the key features of our solar system and about astronomy-related developments and missions that have impacted people's lives. Students have been embarking on Google Expeditions of the solar system, where the planets have been brought into the classroom using virtual and augmented reality technologies, as well as having an up-close look at the Apollo 11 transport vehicles. Augmented reality allows people to interact with their real-world environment in an enhanced way.

Year 6

The Year 6 students are investigating how matter changes state and if those changes are revisable or irreversible. Our most recent investigation was exploring how matter changes when heat is applied.

With the use of digital technology so entrenched in everyday life, ‘kids and screen time’ is often a conversation point.  The Gonski Institute for Education, at the University of NSW have moved the discussion into the public domain with their report ‘Growing up Digital’.

Robyn Ewing AM, Professor Emerita, Teacher Education and the Arts at the University of Sydney, sees technology in the classroom as not just inevitable but essential.  “In the age we live in, children need to be literate in a whole range of different ways,” Professor Ewing says.  “Today’s children are used to different forms of technology from a young age.  All of those things are good and needed and necessary in the context in which we’re living”.

Nevertheless, Professor Ewing was not surprised to discover that 78% of respondents to the ‘Growing up Digital’ survey noticed a decline in empathy among students.

As an antidote, she emphasises the role of literature and the creative arts in developing empathy.  “The more opportunities there are to focus on the imaginative and fictional, the more that helps us understand ourselves as human beings, and understand others.  The more we can use arts forms like drama, art, music and dance, which are all literacies in different ways, because they’re all about making meaning in different ways, the more we will be able to imagine different possibilities and different ways of making the world a better and more socially just place,” she says.

Professor Ewing is nonetheless aware that in the face of an online world constantly serving up colour, movement and novelty, engaging students in artistic processes is not necessarily easy.  But she is optimistic.  “All of us innately need the arts” she says.  “Slowing things down is important.  It’s about less is more and about enabling us to use arts processes and experiences to look at the things we take for granted in the world in a different way.  It’s not about the end product but the process.”

The results of this kind of learning are unequivocal, Professor Ewing says, “students who are engaged in arts-rich processes get their social and emotional wellbeing fed, which in turn means they fare better academically – and not just in arts subjects, but in non-arts areas as well.”

Empathy in the music room

During a recent Year 2 Music lesson, the class was entertained by Jonathan R., as he played a piece from his piano repertoire.  While good performance experience for Jonathan, class members were also further developing empathy through the act of listening carefully, imagining the narrative of the piece and identifying with the musical and technical demands of the repertoire presented.  It was a chance for the class to focus on the imaginative and fictional and for individual students to make personalised meaning from the presented music.  Well done and thank you, Jonathan.

AIC Cross Country Championships

Congratulations to the St Peters AIC Cross Country team who had an outstanding day last Wednesday at the AIC Cross Country Championships at Curlew Park Shorncliffe. With only four points separating first place to fourth place, St Peters finished 3rd overall just two points behind the winning school. The result was built of the 14-years and Open runners winning their age groups along with solid finishes from our 12, 13, 15 and 16-years. Congratulations to Fletcher H., Jack S., Fred M. and Ian K. who all produced good runs on the day. Fred was the first St Peters Year 5 runner home in 14th place while Jack and Fletcher finished 18th and 19th respectively. Special thanks to Mrs Kerry Schreiber and her coaches for all their exceptional work with our runners!

First XV Rugby and First XI Football

We wish to congratulate the following students who have been given honour of representing the St Peters First XV Rugby and First XI Football teams:

These young men commenced training in Term 4 last year and even with an interrupted season, have put in many hours to gain selection in these teams. It also represents the most Springfield based students to represent these teams. We look forward to hearing how these students go along with the rest of the students playing Rugby and Football fixtures against Iona this Saturday.

Well done to all girls who represented St Peters last Friday on the Ekka Holiday long weekend. We saw great results in all the Winter Fixture Sports and our Rowers continued to work on their speed at the second Regatta of the season.

We are now in the second half of the seasons and it is extremely important that attendance to training and games remains high and any absence is communicated early with both coach and coordinator. So far, the 2020 season has demonstrated good team camaraderie and this needs to continue. It is no coincidence that those teams who have consistent attendance to training and games are the teams showing the greatest improvement.

Great news, the QGSSSA Association is now allowing spectators to watch all Winter Fixtures.

St Peters are allowing one spectator per player in each venue, it is important to carefully read the COVID-19 Site Plans, these can be found attached to the draw on the St Peters App.

Round 5 Wrap v St Margaret’s

Round 5 was a split round against St Margaret’s with games being played on Tuesday afternoon and Friday morning of the long weekend. It was an awesome round with all games competitive but played in great spirits with St Peters winning 13 from the 16 games. It was so pleasing to see great improvement across all teams with special mention to our 8A, 8B, 8C, 10B, Senior C and Opens teams who are all undefeated at this stage of the season - well done girls.

We look forward to watching our teams compete this Saturday against the Netball powerhouse of Moreton Bay College with our 9C team enjoying a week off. All games take place on Harts Road Courts, please remember to read carefully the UPDATED COVID-19 Site Plan for our Harts Road Courts. Last weekend our Juniors and Opens had successful fixtures against St Margaret’s, with our Seniors having a bye. Juniors won 4 nil with Astro commenting that it could have been a lot more with some more poise in attack. The Juniors have won two games in a row but come up against stronger opposition this week in Moreton Bay College. Opens eventually won their game 4 -3 after giving all spectators a heart attack. Skill wise we were the stronger outfit but some poor strategy in attack led to some successful counterattacks from St Margaret’s. Special shout outs to Lauren H’s game winner in the final two minutes of the game as well as Jane’s epic tomahawk from an impossible angle.

Round 5 up against St Margaret's was successful in many ways with the Opens, Senior A and Junior B teams taking away wins. The Junior C team continued to develop their game skills and the Senior B and Junior A teams worked through long rallies to get some games under their belts. Well done to the Rowing girls on their performances at the second BSRA regatta that was held last Saturday.  There were certainly some improved performances across the board. 

Congratulations to Giselle G, who for the second week in a row, won the Year ten single scull event convincingly over her other competitors and to Ella H. who improved one position from the week before to achieve a second place in the Year eleven girls single scull. 

This weekend sees the girls at Wyaralong again for the third and final regatta before Head of the River, good luck to all girls competing.

AIC Cross Country Championships

Last Wednesday 12 August saw the running of the annual Associated Independent Colleges (AIC) Cross Country Championships at Curlew Park, Sandgate. After in excess of 10 weeks of training with no competition runs, our St Peters AIC Cross Country team when into the 2020 Championships confident but also unsure of how they would fair against the other seven (7) AIC Colleges.

To their credit, the hard work of hours, days, weeks and months of training, it paid off for them, their coaches and their College.

Overall, St Peters Cross Country team secured overall 3rd place behind Villanova College and Marist College. However, history probably will not note that it was a total of only two (2) points separating first place (Marist – 38 points) and third place (St Peters – 36 points). Without doubt, the 2020 AIC Cross Country Championships will be remembered as one of the closest contested championships in the history of AIC Cross Country.

AIC Football, AIC Rugby and AIC Chess

Congratulations to all our students who participated in Chess (Thursday 13 August), Football and Rugby on Friday 14 August. Overall, it was an extremely successful hit out against St Edmunds College.

A special mention to our Open Chess, First XV Rugby and First XI Football teams who all were victorious and represented our College with pride and great humility.

This weekend St Peters compete against Iona College. All our St Peters Chess teams will be playing at home at St Peters Lutheran College this Friday afternoon.

Our Years 10-12 Rugby and Football teams are also at home whilst our Junior teams (Years 7-9) are away at Iona College, North Road, Lindum.

AIC Track & Field 

This Friday evening, we will compete at the first of several Invitational Track & Field meets in preparation for the 2020 AIC Track & Field Championships which are scheduled to take place in the first week of Term 4, 2020.

Information regarding the St Peters Lutheran College Springfield Sport program will be communicated through a range of modes including email, St Peters App and Cornerstone.
