In a recent paper by the Student Agency Lab, in a world that is increasingly volatile, unstable, uncertain, and unequal, all schools need to continue to help students exert some control and purpose over their lives. We do that here at St Peters Springfield by helping students develop a sense of agency so that they can: understand what matters to them and the communities they are a part of; sense opportunity and act on it; take risks; make commitments; and learn in action how to recover from setbacks, to adjust their plans when things do not work out as they had hoped.

The concept of student leadership is often used interchangeably with student agency, student voice, and student participation. Students feeling empowered to have distinct influence on their school environment is an optimal outcome of student leadership. Throughout the short life of the College at Springfield, we have provided opportunities for students to develop their agency through various student leadership opportunities.

Previously, we have appointed College Captains and Vice Captains, Sports Captains, Music Captains, Faith Captains, and House Captains. These captains have been a direct line of communication with our SET reps in each year group. As our school is growing, there was an identified need to expand our Student Leadership model to provide opportunities for students with different passions and latent dispositions to take on the challenge of leadership. 

In 2023, we are building upon our current student leadership model. We are moving toward a portfolio-based student leadership model. Student Leaders will be appointed to lead specific portfolios within the College.

Leadership portfolios are below:

The role of Student Portfolio Teams is to provide leadership opportunities that build on strengths within the College, by students, and for students. Each portfolio will be under the guidance of a member of our staff.

The three main goals for the leaders in their Portfolios are to:

1. Develop the specific portfolio of St Peters Springfield.
2. Foster College spirit and embody Care, Dignity and Respect.
3. Recognise and highlight the achievements of individuals in these portfolios.

One of the features of the portfolio system is that both students and teachers will co-create the vision and expectations within each portfolio. In this sense, teachers and students will share the learning and leadership experiences. As all students in Years 7-12 will have the opportunity to join a portfolio, all students will have an authentic avenue for having their voices heard and validated.

It is our belief that this model of leadership will further encourage student participation. Essential Human Skills such as collaboration, problem solving, creativity, and critical thinking are the invaluable by-products of this student facilitated model of leadership.

The student leader nomination process for 2023 is currently underway and includes a combination of student and staff voting processes, as well as interviews for shortlisted applicants across all portfolios. This is an exciting move for our growing College and will build upon the initiatives and culture our current and previous student leaders have created.

Year 11 and 12 exams & Year 10 IGNITE week

Week 9, Term 3 in our Secondary School will be busier than usual. Best of luck to our Year 11 and 12 students embarking on end of Unit 2 exams and External Exam trial exams, respectively. All exam timetables, expectations and required equipment has been communicated to all students. Students need to ensure they are putting away devices before bed and prioritise good, consistent sleep through the week.

Our Year 10 students will be experiencing the IGNITE week.  We have engaged ‘Future Anything’ to conduct the Year 10 Entrepreneurial program throughout Week 9. Future Anything transforms young people’s passion and curiosity into innovative ideas that make their world a better place.

Replacing regular curriculum for the entire week, experienced and engaging facilitators begin by having students look inward at personal passions and lived experiences in tackling a common problem. Throughout the week, all Year 10 students use design thinking methodology and cutting-edge entrepreneurial tools to ideate, prototype and business model their own innovative, scalable, and sustainable business solution. This is going to be a great week and I cannot wait to see what the students come up with.

"From little things, big things grow." Paul Kelly and Kev Carmody

How many times have we heard these words in our heads? From the advertising jingle for superannuation to whatever it is being sold this protest song about aboriginal man, Vincent Lingiari, is nearly universally known in our culture. From little things big things grow is also an image Jesus used for God’s people on earth; The Kingdom of Heaven is like a mustard seed planted in a field. It is the smallest of all seeds, but it becomes the largest of garden plants; it grows into a tree, and birds come and make nests in its branches. Mark 4:30-32

Jesus picked this image of the mustard seed in his parable because God values the small things in life. He chose to come to earth as a baby in a manger, he valued the small coins that a widow made as an offering in the temple, and he said if you want to enter the kingdom of God you need to become like a little child. When we pay attention to the small things of life God will use us to have a big effect on others. Going out of our way to talk to people when we are busy, stopping to appreciate the small unnoticed things of life, and focusing on these little things with love are important. Mother Teresa once said that; we cannot do great things, only small things with great love. It is not how much you do but how much love you put into doing it.

The mustard plant was considered a garden weed in Jesus’ time. The Jews who liked nice, neatly trimmed, ordered gardens, had rules about not planting mustard with their vegetables as they feared it would take over the garden. In comparing the kingdom to the mustard seed Jesus is helping us imagine God’s kingdom taking over every part of our lives, our world. For Christians following Jesus is a radical commitment to leave everything behind and serve others. God’s people are to have a profound effect on the world and by counter-cultural acts of love and forgiveness even subvert it.

As the term fast draws to a close may God plant his kingdom in you so that just like in the song and the parable; from little things God would grow big things in your life.

On Friday the 26th of August, our Year 11 and Year 6 students took time out of their regular program to participate in relationship building activities which supported our primary students with their transition to secondary school and provided our senior students with an early leadership opportunity.

Pre-Covid, we had regular boys and girls mentoring sessions, with both boys’ afternoons, and girls’ breakfasts. Now that we are allowed to cross year levels again, similar gatherings have been put back on the agenda, with the core focus being on building a strong sense of collaboration, community and connection between students commencing and concluding their secondary journeys in 2023 at St Peters Springfield.

The Boys – under the guidance of Mr Knight, Mr Piacum and Mr Langlands – travelled to Oxley Top Stroke to participate in a game of mini golf. The Year 6 boys were buddied up with a Year 11 student and encouraged to ask them questions they have about high school. Conversations between students explored changes in friendships, expectations, organisation, subjects, teachers, learning, outside commitments, the highlights, and the struggles. Our younger students were provided with a familiar face for when they start Year 7 and our older students shone with the responsibility they were provided with.

The Girls – under the leadership of the Year 11 girls and Mrs Johnson – were joined in the Junior High Precinct by other fabulous female staff members to run through topic driven activities. The Year 11 girls came up with the following topics, which they thought would be helpful in exploring with the younger students: Boys, Transitioning to High School, Friends and Bullying, Body Image, and Work Life Balance. Every topic had an activity associated with it. For example, when discussing balance our girls engaged in some very active dancing. It was a fun afternoon, and the girls all finished the day with an outside party and sausage sizzle!

The relationships built through these sessions are authentic, with our students being given a genuine opportunity to get to know each other. It is a rare blessing to be able to foster such close relationships in a school and it is only because of our dedicated staff, culture and size that we are able to do this. We are privileged to be able to observe student-directed learning opportunities naturally happen at afternoons such as this one. We look forward to our next get-together in Term 4.

On Friday 19 August, Prep students, teachers and volunteers attended an excursion to the Ipswich Art Gallery where we enjoyed the hands-on workshop ‘Imagine This’. Imagine This is an interactive studio space where children can imagine and make art together. Four inventive artworks are displayed in the room all by Australian artists provide the inspiration and all the art materials are provided. It’s the perfect way to encourage children to explore an artist’s ideas and stimulate their own imaginations. Also, discovering ways to use different materials. Then we had lunch at Ipswich Queen’s Park Nature Centre. We walked around the centre and saw a range of Australian wildlife, including wallabies, dingos, turtles, wombats and a range of bird life including an eagle. 

The centre has been created to represent local bushland and flora communities. We then took a short walk to Ipswich Little Theatre we watched Henrietta’s Not So Helpful Day. This performance was timed to fit in with Book Week. We watched in delight as Henrietta the Hen tried to rally the other animals to help cheer up Meg the dog. Unfortunately, Henrietta kept getting tricked, but all the objects she found rhymed with the item she was supposed to get. We also enjoyed singing along to the many songs. The Preps were enthralled right from the beginning to the very end. It was a magical performance. Our excursion generated much conversation and thought from the Prep Students. We had the most wonderful day.

Last week Stig Wemyss an award-winning audiobook narrator, best known as the narrator of Andy Griffiths’ bestselling Treehouse series visited our school. He presented a vibrant and high-energy show. Stig’s experience brings a unique and dynamic energy to performances through

• Promoting the power of storytelling.
• Developing literacy in children.
• Encouraging community engagement with libraries.
• Increasing library membership.
• A powerful marketing tool for BorrowBox.

Students were encouraged to join the Ipswich Library and make use of audiobooks through Bolinda BorrowBox. Mihika in Year 5 was the first student to sign up through the program.

GIRLS ROWING - BSRA HEAD OF THE RIVER

What a wonderful day last Saturday was for St Peters and our Girls Rowing Program. It was an early start as we ventured to Wyaralong Dam, but nowhere near as early as it was for our Rowers and their amazing parents. Our parents worked tirelessly to prepare for this day as it was our turn to host the regatta - and what an amazing job they did! I walked around in awe of what they had pulled together and carted 1 hour 20 mins to set up, for the 2022 BSRA Head of the River.

Led by Hayden Bentley and the Rowing PSG, the day was a huge success both on and off the water.

Congratulations to all our girls, the atmosphere was special, and it was great to be a part of such an awesome day.

Well done to Peter Hicks and his team of support staff, they do an incredible job with the logistics of running this program to give the girls an amazing Rowing experience.

Thank you to Peter, all our coaches, our parents & girls, you made us feel very proud and we thoroughly enjoyed the day!

AUSTRALIAN CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS

Congratulations to Ava K, Sienna B, Charlotte W, Jade H and Gabrielle S who represented Queensland at the Australian Cross Country Championships last weekend in Oakbank, South Australia.

What a wonderful experience for the girls, they all performed well on the challenging course with special mention to Gabby who place fifth in the U17 age group. Well done girls, you have trained incredibly hard, and we are very proud of you.

BSRA ROWING

Congratulations to all the girls who represented St Peters last Saturday as the Rowing girls competed in the 2022 BSRA Head of The River.  It was a wonderful day with some fantastic results in all age groups. 

The Year 8 girls competed hard with the Third Crew achieving their best place of the season – congratulations girls.  The Year 8 Second Crew had a brilliant start to their race until unfortunately a small mistake which meant they did not finish the race as they would have liked to. The Year 8 1st Quad consisting on Steph P, Summer P, Mia M, Yoyo W and coxed by Remi C had a brilliant race where they lead the race for the first 950m, finishing in third place and with a Bronze medal. 

The Year 9 first and second crews had two brilliant races again tough competition, both crews raced well and finished the season with some of their fastest times of the year. 

The Year 10 Third Crew competed brilliantly achieving their best place of the season – congratulations girls.  The Year 10 Second Crew consisting of Alex W, Julia B, Laura K, Bella B and coxed by Rachael F had a fantastic race with the girls finishing in second place and taking home the Silver medal.  The Year 10 first division has been a fast and tough division throughout the 2022 season and the crew made up of Maya C, Eva H, Jess M, Tiare R and coxed by Esther L raced hard in the first part of the race putting themselves in a strong position and in the final 50m hung on to win the event and take home the Gold medal. 

The Open 1st VIII had a strong race finish in sixth place, congratulations to Giselle G, Zoe M, Niamh B and Luella B who were the Year 12 Seniors who raced their final race for St Peters in the BSRA competition. 

The Senior IV consisting of Megan B, Ailin L, Lilly K, Kate M and coxed by Olivia A have been racing brilliantly all year with the girls putting themselves in a strong position over the first kilometre of their race which enabled them to row over the top of the other crews in the last 500m and win to take home the Gold medal in a BSRA record winning time for their division.

The St Peters Rowing Program has prided itself over the past couple of seasons on the competitiveness of the single scullers that train within the shed. The 2022 season was a fantastic season for the St Peters single scullers with four of five finishing on the podium. 

Congratulations to:

• Giselle G in a fast race, finished in second place winning the Silver medal in the Year 12 Single Scull
• Robin M in a tough race finished in sixth place in the Year 11 Single Scull
• Eva H in a fantastic race where she took the lead with 250m to go to win the Gold medal in the Year 10 Single Scull
• Poppy Y who has not been beaten this season in all regattas, took home Gold in the Year 9 Single Scull
• Steph P in a fast and tough race, raced brilliantly to come third and win the Bronze medal in the Year 8 Single Scull

St Peters 1st V Basketball last Saturday went up against St Patrick’s College in what was an exciting and gritty game played with skill and passion. Displaying great effort at both ends of the court, the players were able to come together well as a team resulting in victory.

With focus and enthusiasm, they came back from being down in the first quarter to then maintain the lead on the scoreboard throughout the remained of the game. Ultimately, coming away with a courageous win. It was a great all-round effort by St Peters 1st V players and coaches.

Congratulations on winning with class and demonstrating great sportsmanship. Best of luck against Marist College this Saturday in Round 6.

It was also on the Lohe Street Tennis Courts that our St Peters First IV Tennis Team also shone. They too have proven that they are deserving of recognition for their determination, relentlessness, and resilience. With four wins and one loss, St Peters First IV go up against Marist College in what will be a challenging and exciting round of AIC Tennis. This weekend is set to be one of their toughest challenges for this season. We are confident that they are up to this challenge and will be as tenacious as ever to get the win when they take the court on Saturday.

The second of our AIC Track & Field Lead Up meets is scheduled for this Thursday 1 September at The State Athletics Facility (SAF), Nathan.

With great numbers already representing St Peters at the first AIC Lead Up Track & Field Meet, we are expecting the same this Thursday night at the State Athletics Facility (SAF). These lead-up meets offer a wonderful opportunity for all our boys in Years 7 to 12 to compete across multiple events whilst also experiencing the great camaraderie amongst our AIC colleges.

The AIC Track & Field Championships will be held in Week 1 of Term 4. We strongly encourage all Years 7 to 12 boys to get involved and attend any of the Track & Field training sessions that they can as well as attending the AIC Lead Up Meets.  

Dress Standards at AIC Sporting Fixtures

An important reminder to all students about our college’s expectation surrounding correct dress standards at AIC fixture games for both players and student spectators:

• All students playing Basketball and Tennis must be dressed in the correct playing attire (including socks). If the weather is cool, only the St Peters Track Top and Track Pants are to be worn.
• Footwear – joggers are to be worn at all times by those students participating in AIC sport. No open footwear (eg. Slides or thongs etc) are to be worn at any time.
• All student spectators are to be dressed in St Peters winter formal uniform. Students who have played earlier in the day can be dressed in the sports uniform to support. Students attending AIC games who are not dressed in the correct St Peters attire will be asked to leave.

St Peters Track & Field Lead Up Meets

St Peters Track & Field training is now underway. We are extremely excited for the 2022 AIC Track & Field season, and we are sure it will not disappoint.

Our 2022 AIC Lead Up Meets for Track & Field are on the following days, please mark these dates off in your calendar:

• AIC T&F Lead Up Meet 2 – Thursday 1 September at SAF, Nathan (4.00pm to 7.30pm)
• AIC T&F Lead Up Meet 3 – Thursday 8 September at SAF, Nathan (4.00pm to 7.30pm)
• AIC T&F Lead Up Meet 4 – Wednesday 14 September at SAF, Nathan (4.00pm to 7.30pm)
• AIC T&F Championships – Thursday 6 October & Friday 7 October at SAF, Nathan

Term 3 Coordinator Contact Details

With regards to wet weather and any unforeseen or potential cancellations of AIC sports, please ensure that you keep an eye out for notifications and alerts via the St Peters App.

Information regarding the St Peters Lutheran College Springfield Sport program will be communicated through a range of modes including email, St Peters App and Cornerstone. Students and parents will primarily receive information from the Head of Sport at Springfield but at times may also receive information from the Girls and Boys Sport Coordinators or individual Sport Coordinators. Parents and students are encouraged to download and use the St Peters App for information regarding the Sport program.
