On this week’s Senior School Assembly, I shared two video clips with the students. The first showed the incident at this year’s Tour de France where a spectator, waving a homemade cardboard placard, was responsible for a crash that brought the race to a halt. The spectator, wanting her sign flashed across television screens, had her back turned to the riders. One of the race leaders, unable to avoid the sign, crashed heavily, bringing down the peloton. After the incident, the unnamed spectator told reporters she regretted her thoughtless actions and was ‘ashamed of [her] stupidity.’

The second clip was an interview with Australian decathlete and Olympian, Cedric Dubler. In the final event of the decathlon at this year’s Tokyo Olympics, the 1500 metre race, Cedric sacrificed his chance to add points to his total. Instead he chose to run alongside his teammate, Ash Moloney, urging his exhausted friend to the finish line and a bronze medal. When asked why he had done it, Cedric replied, ‘it just seemed like the right thing to do.’

God has given us the gift of free will. Every day we make choices—to act or not to act, to speak up or to stay silent, to acknowledge a mistake or smother it with a lie. Our students’ words and actions may not play out on the world stage but the choices they make now, the worldview they form, will shape who they are as adults. They can become people who look inward and march through life, focused on their own wants and desires or they can look outward, and with grace and empathy share the hurts and hopes of others.

At the conclusion of the assembly, I left the students with the question ‘Who do you want to be? The person who believes ‘it is all about me’ and acts thoughtlessly and stupidly or the person who acts ‘because it was the right thing to do’.

One of my favourite activities when I was a kid was to go walking with my dad. Whether it was taking the dog out for a run on the oval, or a strenuous hike through a national park or just a stroll around our suburb, walks were an important part of our relationship. Walking was a time when we could connect and talk. Dad was a great listener, and it was a great time to have his undivided attention. We tended to have big conversations on our walks - about dreams, goals and plans; about frustrations and disappointments. The movement of walking together helped us connect.

It’s probably no wonder that this song has become a perennial favourite for students of all ages. Robin Mann’s song, Walkin’ down the road, imagines our lives as going on a walk with God. Life will always go through its ups and downs, so having God walk beside us helps us to weather the difficulties and to celebrate the joys. The song reminds us that there are times we stumble, times that we don’t know where which path to choose. Our walk in this world isn't about seeking perfection or expecting that life will always be happy and sunny. Rather we trust that God will walk alongside us, guiding us and supporting us through whatever happens.

Dear Lord, we simply ask that you walk alongside of us through the joys and challenges of life. Thank you for being our constant companion as we journey through life. Amen.

On Tuesday 14 September 2021 the Australian Reading Hour will be celebrated at Ipswich Libraries with our community. Families are invited to Ipswich Children’s Library and Springfield Central Library to build blanket forts between the bookshelves and read stories together.

• Meet a local children’s author / illustrator

In years prior to COVID, we held an Inter-School Debating program within our local area. We are hoping to be able to resume the program in 2022.  This year due to the interest of Year 5 and Year 6 students we are holding an Intra-School Debate program. There are three debates over Term 3 and Term 4 to support our students in the development of their debating skills.  With 28 students signed up we created 8 teams and are very thankful to our coaches Mrs Peterson-Woodrow, Mrs Stolz, Mrs West-Mcinnes,  Ms Levitt and Mr Knight. We also have two experienced  student debaters Rishika Jain and Arabella Goyal coaching a team as well.  

Last Wednesday, our adjudicators, Mrs Morgan and Miss Partridge were very impressed by the standard of the debates held over the afternoon. The adjudicators gave feedback that the students presented excellent points and rebuttals on the topic –‘ That teachers should be replaced by robots’.  Mrs Morgan and Miss Partridge are Secondary Debating coaches and were very excited about the quality of the debates and possibilities for debating teams as these students enter their Secondary schooling.

Our second debate will be on Wednesday 15 September with the topic ‘ That the Olympics are a waste of money’.   

Prep students, teachers and volunteers attended an excursion to the Ipswich Queen’s Park Nature Centre. We walked around the centre and saw a range of Australian wildlife, including wallabies, dingos, turtles, wombats and a range of bird life including an eagle. The centre has been created to represent local bushland and flora communities. After some lunch we then visited the Ipswich Art Gallery where we enjoyed the hands-on workshop ‘Light Play’. The Preps were able to explore their artistic potential in an interactive space. They played with overhead projectors and illuminated light boxes and discovered what happens when light is cast on different materials, including sand. They explored transparency, reflection and shadow. Our excursion generated much conversation and thought from the Prep Students. We had the most wonderful day.

Primary students and teachers were very excited to be able to celebrate Book Week in 2021 and bring some normal back into the restricted times we are living in. The theme was ‘New Worlds, Old Worlds and Other Worlds’, and it was wonderful seeing such a huge range of costume ideas to suit the theme. 

Kindy to Year 6 students paraded their wonderful costumes in front of students, staff and parents. It was so lovely to be able to include parents in this event, socially distanced of course. Year 12 students even made an appearance, celebrating their final Book Week at school.

Prep to Year 6 students had the privilege of being read to by some special guests. Thank you to Charis Mullen MP, author Brooke Graham, Tim Kotzur, Craig Schmidt, Debbie West-McInnes, Sue Grother, Sarah Johnson and Ashleigh Cutcliffe for reading to a Primary class throughout the week. Finally, a big thank you to our wonderful library and Heart’s Cafe staff who decorated the Hub with a sea theme, space theme and ‘olden-days’ theme.

It was a wonderful week had by all!

Book Week Author Visit

Our Lower Primary students enjoyed meeting local author, Brooke Graham, who shared her recently published book – ‘ Go Away  Worry Monster’.   Brooke used a sock puppet to engage the students in the story about how we do have worries but there are steps we can take to overcome these worries. Brooke also shared how her book went from the idea to being published.  Her book was recently nominated in the Children’s Book Council of Australia Book Week awards as a short-listed book for new illustrator.   The illustrator of Go Away Worry Monster was Robin Tatlow-Lord.  

Students have been given the opportunity to purchase ‘Go Away Worry Monster’ by sending back the form sent home last week.  Brooke will be at school on Monday 6 September delivering signed copies.

Round 7 Wrap v Moreton Bay College

Saturday was a great day for St Peter Netball! With an early start to travel to MBC, Round 1 saw our Senior A, 9A, 7A, 7B, 8B & Senior C (1) take the court and what round it was! All teams coming away with hard fought victories. Senior A had a fight on their hands early before breaking away in the last quarter. 9A, with only seven players due to Ironbark and injuries, fought so hard to get the W and the 7A & 7B teams did very well which is exciting for the future. Our 8B team did great as did our Senior C (1) team – what a round!!!

Round 2 saw our Open Team take the court and come away winners, the first time beating MBC in my time at St Peters – well done girls, it was tough, and you did amazing! Also taking the court was the 10A, 9B, 8A, Senior B & 10B teams. 8A played an awesome last quarter to win in the end by six, 10B & Senior B both winners by two in very close games. 10A were in it all game and went down to quality opposition by five in the last quarter. This leaves our 9B, 8/9C & 8C teams, I was so super proud of these girls, many of them playing up a division to cover the nine girls at Ironbark, they didn’t win their games but they played hard and represented St Peters with pride – well done girls, you were amazing!

SAINTS CHALLENGE CUP WRAP UP

On a fun Friday afternoon with byes for the 7C & 10C teams, we enjoyed some friendly games. 10C v Boarders and 7C, Year 7 Dev Squad and WDNA 1 played a round robin of matches. We are seeing amazing improvement in the girls, the WDNA 1 team went on to win their Semi Final on Saturday morning by one goal!!

We also had a surprise visit from Mr Kotzur which was fantastic, he was able to present our award winners on the day.

Round 7 Wrap v Moreton Bay College

The players and coaches were happy for the season to resume and we came up against Moreton Bay College, who have been one of the best hockey schools for many years. The Juniors were without their most experienced field player in Helena which made others have to stand up and take on more ownership. After being timid early and finding themselves down 3-0, the Juniors rallied hard and showed great grit and enterprise to get to halftime at 3-0. The girls were under a lot of pressure at the back with Mathilda playing her first game after returning from Ironbark. She did a terrific job trying to slip the ball past the yellow and maroon wall. The girls ended up going down 7-0 but lots of girls stood up and played more significant roles for the team this game.

The Opens had a 4-0 loss to MBC but it was certainly our finest effort of the year. The game plan of being more defensive and using our speed up front to counter attack was working well until we lost our central linchpin Lauren to a ball to the head. This allowed others to play centre half but robbed the team of one our most experienced players. The effort and style of play was excellent and I couldn’t fault our attempt to knock over one of the better teams in QG hockey.

This weekend is the BSRA Head of the River Regatta at Wyaralong Dam. For those of you that may like to watch a race or two, the event is being livestreamed.

The Rowing girls are a committed group, who over the past two terms, have put in countless hours in the mornings and afternoons, both on the water and in the gym to prepare for this regatta.

Yesterday the Rhythmic Gymnastics girls competed for QGSSSA at Moreton Bay College.

It was a tremendous effort by the girls and the standard of their performances was exceptional. It was a tough competition but the girls took it in their stride and did amazingly well. We are so proud of their efforts, not only for yesterday but throughout the whole season.

The QGSSSA is introducing AFL Skill Development Sessions and Gala Days in preparation for the introduction of AFL as a competition in 2022. This Term 4 opportunity is open to all girls in Years 7 and 11

It is important to note, AFL will be offered for Years 10, 11 & 12 girls in Term 1 next year, The GIRLS WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PLAY SOFTBALL & AFL, they will have to choose one.

Years 7-9 AFL will be played in Term 4 next year.

The 2021 – 2022 BWPI Water Polo Season trials will be held during training times in Week 9 & Week 10, further details will be advised (no Sunday trials this year).

It is important for selection that all girls attend all training sessions/trials.

• The season runs for Term 4 2021 & Term 1 2022 – THE COMMITMENT IS FOR BOTH TERMS.

It is always fantastic to get notified when a student at St Peters has achieved higher representation in the sport they participate within. This week I received notification that Year 12 student Gabriel V has been named in the 2021 Australian U18 Baseball Squad. His selection will now hopefully see Gabriel represent Australia at the 30th World Cup in Sarasota, Florida in 2022. Congratulations Gabriel on a wonderful achievement. Well done!

AIC Basketball & Tennis

Play with pace, purpose and stay poised, was the message for our 1st V Basketball players before taking the court last Saturday against St Patrick’s College. Displaying great effort on both ends of the court, our boys were able to come together well as a team.

With focus and enthusiasm, they maintained the lead on the scoreboard throughout the entire game, ultimately winning by a 19 point margin (81- 62).

A great all round effort by St Peters First V players and coaches.

Congratulations on wining with class and demonstrating great sportsmanship. Best of luck against Marist College this Saturday in Round 6.

It would be remiss of me not to make mention of our St Peters 1st IV Tennis team as well. They too have proven that they are deserving of recognition for their determination, relentlessness and resilience. Now with four wins form four rounds, they are currently undefeated leading into this weekend verse Marist College, which may be one of their toughest challenges this season. We are confident that they are up to this challenge and will be as tenacious as ever to get the win when they take the court on Saturday.

St Peters Track & Field

St Peters AIC Track & Field Lead Up Meet number one was on Thursday 2 September at QSAC, Nathan. Next week will be meet number two on Thursday 9 September, again at QSAC. We encourage all boys to make sure they ‘sign on’ to participate in these AIC Lead Up Meets as they are a vital component in our preparation leading toward the AIC Championships on 9 & 10 October 2021.

All boys in Junior High (Years 7 to 9) and Senior School (Years 10 to 12) have been sent an informational email about the AIC Lead Up meets.

Also, we encourage all our St Peters Track & Field athletes to look at joining a local Athletics Club and register with Queensland Athletics (QA). Competing regularly at organised Track & Field meets and competition is one of the best ways to improve and serve as a great training experience as well.

With Toowong Harriers Athletics Club located within five minutes of St Peters Lutheran College, I encourage all our St Peters athletes to strongly consider joining and regularly competing at QA competitions. This is also a great way for our younger athletes (11-14 years) to improve their coordination, skills, speed and overall fitness level.
