Student Leadership at St Peters Springfield
Fostering leadership capacity among a large group of students within the school has been recognised as a valuable approach to enhancing individual student growth, academic achievement and overall wellbeing. Existing literature highlights encouraging results from programs aimed at cultivating student leadership, demonstrating a variety of favourable outcomes. Well established student leadership programs aimed and developing a sense of co-agency within students contributes to broader social and economic advantages (Hallinger, 2003; Leithwood, 1992; Marsh, 2012).
In 2023, we introduced a portfolio-based student leadership model into the Secondary Years. Student Leaders are appointed to lead specific portfolios within the College. We are currently moving through the process of selecting and appointing our student leadership team responsible for leading specific portfolios beginning in Term 4.
To prepare for the wonderful responsibility of leading, younger students are able to witness role-modelling in action through the portfolio model. Younger students can then build upon the great work already achieved in a specific portfolio in the coming years.
The student leadership portfolios team:
The role of Student Portfolio Teams is to provide leadership opportunities that build on strengths within the College, by studentsand for students. Each portfolio is under the guidance of a member of our staff.
The three main goals for the leaders in their Portfolios are to:
- Develop the specific portfolio of St Peters Springfield.
- Foster College spirit and embody Care, Dignity and Respect.
- Recognise and highlight the achievements of individuals in these portfolios.
One of the features of the portfolio system is that both students and teachers will co-create the vision and expectations within each portfolio. In this sense, teachers and students will share the learning and leadership experiences. As all students in Years 7-12 will have the opportunity to join a portfolio, all students will have an authentic avenue for having their voices heard and validated. I know our current student leaders are keen to extend this model in the Primary Years.
Our Year 11 cohort is currently engaging with the selection process. All Year 11 students attended our leadership camp to Emu Gully at the end of Term 2, students have engaged in workshops and reflection activities to guide their views and understanding of what good leadership looks and feels like.
I am very proud to say that we have had 28 applications for student leadership positions. All applications are posted in our Junior High Precinct for students and staff to consider. All applicants have had the opportunity to be interviewed by our selection team. The learning and growth from this experience is immense and we are incredibly lucky to have dedicated, creative and thoughtful young people to help co-create the culture of our College.
I look forward to announcing the successful applicants in the coming weeks.
