We have learnt that we need to let our children know that it is OK to not be OK.  When something does not go right it is important we don’t always reassure our young ones that everything will be alright.  We need to let children know it is OK to be upset – feelings are a part of life.  Life does not go according to plan and we are going to have a range of negative feelings (sad, mad, afraid, ashamed or hurt) but how we deal with those feelings will determine whether we bounce back.  Resilience is a skill needing to be taught in order to cope with challenges that come our way.  Strategies to support the health and wellbeing of our young people include being a good role model as adults when we go through life’s ups and downs. We can also use books, television shows, movies and the news as a catalyst for open discussion. Letting your child make mistakes, and not propping them each time they fail or make a mistake, are important strategies. 

Today, students were involved in a range of activities during school and during lunch breaks to promote connecting, caring and being there for others.  There are a range of websites we will be drawing from on Thursday to promote health and wellbeing and are also accessible to families.

This Thursday is R U OK? Day and a student group reminded us in assembly today, that there is more to say after the question: Are you okay?

We pride ourselves in being a strong and caring community at St Peters, but this does not happen by accident. It is built on the foundation of God’s unending and deep love for us, sealed in the cross of Christ, which calls us into community and seeks to transform our lives, so we can out of this love look out for those around us.

R U OK? Day is a good reminder of a practical way in which we can look out for one another by being open to each other, noticing what’s going on around us and reaching out to those who seem to be out of sorts. This is especially important in this exceptional and stressful year, with so many continuing uncertainties and many dashed plans. We might express care by taking a moment to notice and listen, by being willing to give of ourselves, our time and effort, by letting another share what’s going on in their life. We won’t have all the answers, but we can offer a listening ear, an open heart, perhaps some practical tips (where further help us available), and we can pray for one another and place ourselves in God’s loving hands.

St Paul explained community this way in his first letter to the Corinthians: Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. ...  If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honoured, every part rejoices with it (1 Corinthians 12:12,26).

We share the experience of this year, even as we each react and relate to the circumstances in our own individual way. Asking Are you okay? gives the opportunity to learn more about one another, to share suffering and joy and so continue to grow as one body, one community.

Dear Parents, Guardians and Caregivers 

To assist with planning for 2021 to ensure effective educational programs, staffing and administration, it is important that the College is aware of expected student numbers.

As per our Enrolment Policy and contract, families are required to give one term’s notice of a student’s withdrawal from the College, therefore we need to be notified by the end of this term (15 September 2020) if your child(ren) is/are not returning to St Peters in 2021. It is imperative that the College receives written notice if you do not intend for your child(ren) to be enrolled as we commence next year. Please email s.enrolments@stpeters.qld.edu.au with your advice, or if you have any questions.

Important: No action is required to confirm that your child is staying at our school as all enrolled students automatically transfer into the next school year with St Peters Springfield.

Last week we celebrated Australian Teacher Assistants Appreciation Week. The special week provided an opportunity for the College to acknowledge and celebrate the important contribution teacher assistants make to student learning and wellbeing. A huge thank you to our Teaching Assistants for all the help and integral support they offer in the classrooms every single day.

We’d also like to acknowledge all the hard work from our Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) staff, as well as the St Peters Lutheran Kindergarten staff. Last week was Early Childhood Educators’ Day which recognises and celebrates the work of Australia’s educators in early learning services for their wonderful contribution to the wellbeing and healthy development of the young children in their care.

Thank you to all of the amazing staff who help provide our St Peters community with a safe, secure and supportive learning environment where they can learn, grow and thrive.

Origin’s popular Little Big Idea competition launched today for 2020 which encourages school age children to get involved with STEM and share their great ideas on assisting the community, improving people’s health and wellbeing, and creating a more sustainable future.

Unlike last year, we can’t send our Little Big Idea winners on an innovation adventure to NASA in the USA this year. Instead, the three brightest inventors will each receive $10,000 towards their education or further developing their idea. Plus, the top 12 finalists will receive $1,000 and one-on-one mentoring developed by Engineers Without Borders Australia.

Did you know?

The Blue Card system is changing from 31 August 2020 with a 'No Card, No Start' policy.

This means that paid employees and volunteers must hold a current Blue Card / Exemption Card or be issued with a Blue Card before commencing work at the College.

This does not apply to Teachers with current QCT Registration/Nurses with NMBA Registration.

If you are interested in working at our College, you may wish to consider how your application will affect your suitability for a position as holding a current Blue Card prior to commencing is an inherent requirement of all roles (excluding Teaching/Nursing)

Volunteers in our Community

Further to our last update, we would like to confirm that there is no requirement for parents to hold a Blue Card / Exemption Card while volunteering at the College (with the exception of if you are participating in a homestay, which falls under a separate category and has additional obligations). This extends to volunteering at events that are off site or outside of normal school hours (e.g: sports, a weekend activity) provided that it is connected with the College and your child is a current student.

Other family members (e.g: Grandparent, Aunty/Uncle, Godparent etc) may be required to obtain a volunteer blue card if they are volunteering in a child-related setting for more than 7 days in total in a calendar year (regardless of whether this is in a row or not and regardless of if this is at St Peters or not).

It is a compliance requirement that all employees/volunteers/independent contractors who are required to hold a Blue Card/Exemption Card are linked to the College and this can be done by providing details of their Blue Card / Exemption Card to People & Culture.

The new Junior High Precinct was officially opened last week by Mrs Charis Mullen MP, Member for Jordan and Reverend Paul Smith, Bishop of the Lutheran Church of Australia Queensland District.

Representing the State Minister for Education, Mrs Mullen acknowledged the incredible occasion, “We get to celebrate an amazing piece of architecture, but more importantly something that will benefit student learning for many years to come.”

Having previously visited students in the iSTEAM (Innovation, Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics) lab to donate drones, Mrs Mullen, says, “It’s absolutely incredible the things students are learning these days and now in the Junior High Precinct they will have the opportunity to do even more of that type of learning.

“I love how bright and airy it is and I have to give a little shout out to the gallery area. You get to see some beautiful art by the students and to have that gallery space is really wonderful as well. Recognising that it’s not just about STEM but STEAM which is an inclusion of the arts as well.

"I want to thank St Peters Lutheran College for this incredible financial investment they have made in the Junior High Precinct, it really embeds this school into our greater Springfield community and I couldn’t be prouder to represent the College,” says Mrs Mullen.

Online debating has brought about many challenges and benefits for our students this term. Overall our debate team have done exceptionally well in the Year 9/10 competition— with students competing from Years 8, 9 and 10. Debate organiser, Mr Brendan Wingett says, “Overall they’ve done a really good job. It’s fun versing teams all over Australia. So far we’ve debated against five schools including Canberra Girls Grammar and Parramatta Marist High School.”

Mr Wingett believes online debate has opened up the team to different experiences. “They still learn all the debating skills in terms of preparing the argument and rebuttals but they can do it all from the comfort of the classroom.”

There has been a slight difference between being in front of a camera and being in front of an audience. Mr Wingett says, “They feel a bit uncomfortable to begin with, but it works quite well. Once the first person gets up and speaks and they understand, ‘OK we just need to look at the camera’, it all seems to be OK.”

“We would like to have more students participate in debating,” says Mr Wingett. “There are skills that can be developed from debating. A lot of students get nervous about the thought of public speaking, but in a competition like this there’s only four other people in the room. There’s no crowd, no opposition chatting behind you while you’re talking. It’s literally getting up and preparing a persuasive speech. There are so many benefits that can come from that. The confidence, the ability to think on the spot, being more worldly regarding the topics —we cover current newsworthy topics. So learning these skills will definitely help students in the long term.”

It has become an annual tradition to cook pancakes for Year 12 students as a gesture of support and encouragement. Last Thursday was the final school day before Year 12 Mock Exams so this was the perfect time to express the goodwill of our community to them in a flat, round, sweet and tasty form. Nearly everyone loves a pancake and our Year 12s are no exception. Who doesn’t feel better after a pancake or two?! Thank you to the St Peters Springfield Parents & Friends Association for supporting this event. God bless the Year 12s as they do their Mock Exams and as they prepare for the final External Exams next term.

This week Year 6 has embarked on an incredible and unique tour of Brisbane. Every day this week students have been busy with excursions around the topics of law and order. They have visited Queensland Parliament House and had fun with role playing, they’ve also toured Old Government House and the Queensland Supreme Court. During their visit to the Queensland Police Museum they became crime scene detectives using augmented reality. On Wednesday they visited Victoria Army Barracks for an incredible exhibition and tour. To finish the week off students visited Boggo Road Goal for an informative tour, then went onto the Commissariat Store Museum. Following on from there Year 6 visited the Science Centre and Museum for some more educational fun and learning time. The week was designed for Year 6 students to reflect and learn and parents will be able to go to the Year 6 Firefly page to see photo galleries and student observations. A huge thank you to Mr Matthew Knight, our Year 6 Upper Primary Key Pastoral Care Teacher, Mrs Danielle Braiden and Primary staff for organising this amazing opportunity for our Year 6 students.

Throughout 2020 our Primary Teachers have been investigating an education approach focusing on investigation and problem solving.  Teachers have been developing the skills to reverse the order of learning.  Instead of presenting information, teachers start with a range of scenarios, questions and problems for the students to navigate.

Last Friday our staff further developed these understandings by delving into Planning for Concept Based Inquiry.  As students use active questions to drive learning they also transfer understandings that help students make sense of their learning.

The inquiry cycle framework we have chosen to use is one designed by Kath Murdoch.  The framework includes tuning in, finding out, sorting out, going further, making conclusions, taking action.  Each classroom is making the inquiry learning visible using the framework to create a classroom of learners, problem solvers, creative and critical thinkers.

Year 3 given new perspective for writing persuasive text

Writing a great persuasive speech needs a little motivation. To help our students prepare for their speeches something amazing happened in the classroom. Students from 3 came to their classrooms only to find all the chairs were stacked in one corner with a letter from their chairs asking for a little bit more respect, and to be pushed under the table after being used. What more could Year 3 students do but to get their active imaginations to work and devise some brilliant writing and persuasive techniques to get their chairs back. The chairs were eventually persuaded and the classrooms returned to normal.

Learning persuasive writing techniques now helps young students give excellent presentations in future year levels which will also help in the work place. Additionally, the skills developed by persuasive speeches expand far beyond presentations. Students learn how to communicate with others, speak clearly, present themselves well and articulate their ideas. These tools help students communicate with friends, family members and in relationships.

Last week many of our primary students worked extremely hard on some fantastic Father’s Day presents in preparation for the big day. Using their outstanding creative talents students made cards, mugs, drawings and collages for dads, granddad’s and those special people in their lives. From all of us here at St Peters Springfield we hope everyone had a wonderful Father’s Day and enjoyed their hand-made gifts.

Congratulations and thanks are due to Joshua C. and Mikayla B., who both performed at the Opening of the Junior High Precinct on Friday 4 September.  Josh is the Ensemble Leader for Cantabile Strings and Mentor for Allegro Strings, and is heavily invested in the strings programme at St Peters Springfield.  He has recently completed an AMEB examination, and performed much of this repertoire as guests arrived.  Mikayla, our Music Captain, performed the National Anthem at the commencement of the service.  Both gave commendable performances, and demonstrated to all present the warm acoustics of our newest learning space.

Thanks to Josh and Mikayla for their time and talents, and also to their families who provided transport during the student free day.

Creative Expressions 2021 and Ensembles Recital

During Curriculum Music lessons and Ensemble rehearsals, students, teachers and conductors have been busy rehearsing repertoire for performance.  Unfortunately, we are still not able to welcome parents and friends for live performances, so instead we have recorded performances.  Recordings and uploading are still occurring, and will be ready for release during the student free days at the end of term.  Access information will be released then.  Enormous thanks to conductor/teachers and students for their mammoth efforts in preparing for these digital events.

Young Conservatorium 2021 applications are now open.

On behalf of the Creative Arts and Private Tuition teams, best wishes for a safe and restful holiday break.  We look forward to seeing the students return in Term 4, ready for the last term.

As we move into the last weekend of QGSSSA and AIC Sport for Term 3, we congratulate all students who have represented the College throughout the term. Given the circumstances, to have over 230 students represent the College across girls and boys sport is significant and it has been wonderful to see everyone from girls in Year 3 playing WDNA Primary Girls Netball through to students representing QG Open Girls or AIC First Boys teams.

A special mention to Josh S. in Year 11 who has worked hard throughout the year to gain selection in the First XV Rugby team. Josh has played the last few games but unfortunately suffered a serious injury on Saturday and will not be able to play the final game. We wish him a speedy recovery!

Our WDNA Primary Girls Netball teams will also continue their season into the holidays and hope they can finish off the season with some wins!

QGSSSA Track and Field Championships

We congratulate all our QGSSSA Track and Field athletes as they make final preparations for the QGSSSA Track and Field Championships which will be held next Thursday 17 September at QSAC. St Peters is aiming to build on third place from 2019 and we look forward to seeing the girls represent the College. The girls have spent many hours training and competing at meets throughout the term. Go Saints!

Central District Cricket

Congratulations to Shrey J. in Year 7 who has been selected in the Central District 12 years Cricket team. Shrey will trial at the Met West Cricket trials later in the year. Shrey is a valuable member of the Year 7 Cricket program and we wish him all the best!

Prep to Year 2 Athletics Program

As we aim to offer more opportunities for Lower Primary students, we are asking for expressions of interest for Prep to Year 2 Athletics program.

This program will be run on a Monday afternoon from 2.45 pm to 3.45 pm and be run by Mrs Marty Stolberg. Cost of the program will be $100 for six sessions. Dates of the program are as follows:

We have nearly made it, and what a term it has been!

Congratulations to all the girls that have represented St Peters Lutheran College this term either on the Hockey field, the Netball, Volleyball or Tennis Court or on the water for Rowing.

Our girls have done an amazing job, I have enjoyed watching them every week and the improvement across our Girls Sports has been impressive. The girls have wonderful support from our Coordinators and Coaches, and we thank each and everyone of them for all they do for St Peters Sport.

Good luck to our Track & Field girls as they continue their final preparations for the QGSSSA Championships next Thursday.

We also have our Senior Basketball Girls playing in the All School Basketball Tournament and two teams of our Netball Girls playing in the Vicki Wilson Competition in the holidays – good luck girls.

We headed off down the Ipswich Highway to take on IGGS and once again we came away with some great results. With all games played over two rounds, it was action packed in the sunshine at Doris Howes Netball Centre. Our 7B, 8A & Senior C teams continue their unbeaten run with convincing wins. Our Year 9 girls continue to give their best in a year of disruption with girls away at Ironbark. Our 9A girls fought back hard to go down by one and our 9B girls gave their absolute best. We also had our Senior A team play their last official game for the year with four of our Year 12 girls, including our Captains Sophie & Gabby, along with Mia and Laura, play their last game for St Peters – well done Girls, so great you finished on a high 😊 We also wish our Year 12 girls playing this Saturday all the best for your last game of Netball for St Peters.

This week we travelled to Ipswich to take on IGGS with Seniors not having a game due to a bye. Juniors were shocked early with a one goal deficit but shook this off to win the game 4-1. Opens played some nice expansive Hockey and repeatedly went around their opposition on the right side to set up short corner and goal opportunities. Tahlia was exceptional at right half with Sammi scoring four goals with some deadly attacking raids.

QGSSSA TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS – Thursday 17 September – 1 week away!!

Well done to the many girls who ventured to QSAC for the Invitational meet on last night. It was a great night and Mr Nodwell, Mr Donatini and Mr Lohe are very happy with the attendance and the performances from the girls. This week as we prepare for the QG Championships, we ask all girls to keep an eye on their emails for further information. Next Wednesday 16 September will be the final compulsory training session for the season followed by lunch, please watch for further details.

BWPI WATER POLO

St Peters play in the BWPI Water Polo Club Competition - Games are played at various venues around Brisbane on Saturdays in Term 4 2020 & Term 1 2021.

Water Polo Trials – The final week of trials is this Sunday 13 September.

Please always check the St Peters App for the most up to date information. The first round of games for the 2020-2021 BWPI season are being played on Saturday 10 October, the first Saturday back in Term 4.

QG JUNIOR SOFTBALL

Years 7, 8 & 9 Girls Only - St Peters plays in the QGSSSA Junior Softball Competition in Term 4.

There are four game days played in the afternoon at Downey Park - Weeks 3 & 4 (approx. 1.00pm - 5.00pm).

Bus transport will be provided.

Trials continued this week and next Tuesday morning 15 September will be the final one for Term 3 - Hart Road Oval, 6.15am - 7.30am.

Training will then commence after the holidays in Week 1, further details can be found on the St Peters App.

AIC Football, AIC Rugby and AIC Chess – FINALS ROUND

Chess – St Peters Chess again won the day against Villanova College on Friday afternoon, 4 September. After successful results from their three pool rounds, all our Chess Teams now embark on ‘cross pool finals’ on Friday 9 September. All AIC Chess Finals will be played on Friday at St Laurence’s College Performing Arts Centre. We wish all the St Peters Chess players and their coaches the very best.

Due to COVID restrictions, there will be NO spectators at this Friday’s AIC Chess finals.

Rugby and Football – Saturday 10 September will see all our St Peters Rugby and Football teams competing in the AIC finals round. Depending on how they finished in their first three rounds (pool games) will determine who each of our teams will compete against this coming Saturday.

Each AIC school will host one age group this year for Finals in both Rugby and Football (Open Teams – Marist College, Year 10 – St Peters, Year 9 – Villanova College, Year 8 – Iona College, Year 7 – Padua College, Year 6 Gala Day – St Patrick’s College, Year 5 Gala Day – St Laurence’s College).

We do wish our First XI Football Team and our First XV Rugby Team every success when the compete against Marist College (Football) and Padua College (Rugby) this Saturday.

All First Football and Rugby games will be live streamed on Saturday 10 September. Please refer to the following links should you wish to watch any of the AIC First XI Football and/or First XV Rugby games.

AIC Track & Field 

This week our St Peters AIC Track & Field squad will compete at the second of our lead up meets at the State Athletics Facility, Nathan. This meet will take place on Thursday 10 September from 4.00pm.

It's been a very busy time for all our athletes with lots of sport being played in Term 3 (Basketball, Tennis, Cross Country, Rugby, Football and Chess) due to the adjustment of the annual AIC sporting calendar as a result of COVID. Nevertheless, our St Peters Track & Field boys have tried their best to be available and compete in preparation for the AIC Track & Field Championships which will be held at the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre (QSCA) on Friday 9 October and Saturday 10 October.

Next week we will continue St Peters AIC Track & Field training as per normal. We do ask all St Peters athletes to regularly check their student email account for further details which will be emailed directly to each athlete later this week.

Rowing

Congratulations to the Boys and Year 8 Girl Rowers who competed in the first of two Gold Coast Regional All Schools Rowing Association regattas last Saturday at Wyaralong Dam. 

In particular, congratulations to the following individuals who achieved podium finishes;

• Jack U and Angus G. – Second in the schoolboy Year 10 double scull
• Oscar M, Angus H, Mitchell B, Jovan J, and Archie C – Third in the Open schoolboys coxed quad scull
• Angus G – Third in division two of the schoolboy Year 10 single scull
• Sam G – Third in division 3 of the schoolboy Year 10 single scull
• Angus M & Oscar M – Second in the Open schoolboy double scull
• Angus H & Jovan J – Third in the Open schoolboy double scull
• James T – Third in the schoolboy novice scull. 

Good luck to both the boys and the year eight girls as they make the trip out to Wyaralong Dam this weekend again to compete in the second and final of the Gold Coast Regional All Schools Rowing Association Regattas.
