During Book Week, our local member for Jordan, Ms Charis Mullen, presented a voucher to St Peters to purchase books from our local book seller. Mrs Ryan selected an excellent range of stories for the library but one that caught my eye was called ‘Cyril and Pat’ by Emily Gravett.

The story is about a squirrel and a rat who formed an unlikely friendship. They found things they liked to do together, they laughed together and they worked together as a team. At the end of the story, they discovered that even though they looked different there was nothing more important than a loyal friend.

In our role as educators, it is important for students to understand and learn what it means to be a friend. Each day presents many positive friendship stories as well as some friendships that struggle. It is in these incidental times as well as structured Pastoral Care time that students learn about the friendship character words loyal, compassionate, trustworthy, patient and generous.

In our recent focus on dignity, which is one of our St Peters values, we investigated how important it is to choose friends who make you feel the best person you can be. They are the ones that build you up and not pull you down and the ones who stand beside you when you need support. It is also when you put your friends before yourself. Research continues to support friendship choices of those who are similar to themselves and who have personalities that they enjoy being around.

In the younger years, friendships can be built on convenience or pleasure, but ultimately, we want our students to choose friends of good character. As parents and educators, the way we talk through friendship concerns with our children helps them make informed decisions.  It is important to be supportive by focusing on the positives of the situation and then together come up with solutions and ideas. This all works towards our students making positive choices in friendships.

I think Winnie the Pooh sums up what it means to be a friend. ‘A friend is someone who helps you up when you’re down, and if they can’t, they lay down beside you and listen’.

I have a beautiful Diffenbachia pot plant sitting on my desk. I’m rather proud of it because I’ve grown it from a little seedling. I’ve tried hard to keep it healthy. I’ve kept it in the right position, fed and watered and given it plenty of tender, loving care. It is only because the plant has been linked to a caring owner that it is now obviously firmly rooted, with a nice strong stem, and well established to survive a few knocks. 

This is the image that Saint Paul used in his letter to the Colossians: So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught. (Colossians 2:6,7).

When our lives are linked with Jesus in a special way and when we continue to live with our lives centred in Jesus, then we too can be firmly rooted and built up and established in the Christian faith. At St Peters, this can happen through the hearing of God’s word – in chapel or church, in classes, reading the bible, in fellowship. Then we hear about what God has done for us and we respond to that love. We learn about the strength that he can give us that helps us to cope with the hard things in life. We also learn about the gifts that we are given, and these gifts are nurtured. And it is in this nurturing of each person’s gifts that they are enabled to use them, to go out into the world to help other people.

When we hear about disasters happening in the world, and especially when we hear of droughts and fires affecting people’s lives, we ask where God is. We know that he is there, comforting people in their loss, strengthening them for the difficult times ahead, and empowering us to find ways of helping those who need our help. As a school, we are continuing to find ways to spread God’s love, to show our care and our support for those struggling with difficult situations.

The ICAS competitions are being conducted at school on the following dates:

ICAS Science does not test knowledge of science although the questions may assume some knowledge appropriate to the students’ age. All the information that the students need to respond to the question is provided in the stimulus.

The papers cover content on:

• Natural and Processed Materials

Students are assessed across the key scientific areas of: 

• Observing and measuring: Noting and measuring features of items and phenomena
• Interpreting: Interpreting data in diagrams, tables and graphs

• Investigating: Experimental design, use of controls and notion of ‘fair test'
• Reasoning and problem solving

English
ICAS English assesses reading and language skills in a range of contexts. The following aspects of texts are assessed and reported:

• Text comprehension
• The writer’s craft in selecting particular text types, vocabulary and techniques
• Vocabulary

The questions require students to locate, identify, sequence, explain, interpret, analyse and infer information in and about texts. Students read a variety of texts which narrate, describe, explain, argue, persuade and review. These include extracts from picture books, novels, poems, play scripts, transcripts of interviews, letters, diary entries, advertisements, web pages, feature articles, opinion pieces and comic strips. These texts cover a range of topics and may include tables, diagrams, maps and other visual information.

Mathematics
Students are assessed across five key skill areas: 

• Algebra and patterns: Patterns of numbers, relationships between numbers and the use of symbols to stand for unknown or variable numbers
• Chance and data: Mathematical treatment of data and statistics
• Measures and units: Properties of the physical world that can be measured, the units used to measure them and the process of measurement
• Number and arithmetic: Types of numbers, their properties and number operations
• Space and geometry: Properties of two-dimensional and three-dimensional space

In 2019, ICAS competitions will be undertaken online. Students in Years 4 – 12 will access the web-based platform using their devices, while Year 3 will be provided with access to a device. Please note, the iPad mini is not supported by the ICAS testing platform. Prior to testing, compliance tests will be conducted on devices. Students may find it helpful to familiarise themselves with the testing platform using the Practice Interaction Test.

Students who have elected to participate will be supervised by Ms Susan Levitt, Miss Lauren Head and Miss Samantha Fulcher.

Prep-Year 6 Curriculum Leader

This week the Year 8s ran the very first Kindness Food Sale. The students worked tirelessly throughout both morning tea and lunchtime to serve their peers plenty of delicious food of suspect nutritional value. Massive congratulations to 8S and 8T students who managed to raise a total of $326 towards two very worthwhile causes. A huge thank you to those that gave up part of their weekend to cook, bake or create some wonderful food over the weekend. The money will go towards helping Alfred and towards St Peters Village partnership. Well done Year 8s.

Year 4 travelled to QCCC Brookfield for their first school camp on Thursday and Friday. They were really excited all week with lots of questions about the campsite. It was a fabulous camp and all students, teachers and the camp organisers enjoyed their time there. Students' behaviour was excellent and the camp leaders regularly commented on how well they interacted during the activities and followed the instructions. It was extremely hot during the camp and it was great to see how students adapted to the conditions. We even managed an early morning run on Friday morning much to the excitement of Mr Brayne and Mr Kelly. 

There were many positive comments about the camp but the 'food' definitely received a high response. Orienteering, archery, climbing wall and the movie night were also among the camp favourites. Mrs Jeffries surprised everyone with her archery skills which was greeted with a loud cheer from the Year 4 students. There were many tired students on the bus home who did everything they could to stay awake and reflect on everything that happened on camp. The most impressive part of camp was the way everyone looked out for each other during the two days. 

Congratulations to our students who took part in the inaugural Multi-Language Primary Speech Contest at Griffith University on Sunday! The event was organised by the MLTAQ (Modern Languages Association of Queensland). 

Four students from Year 4 and five students from Year 5 represented St Peters Springfield at this exciting contest, where students had to deliver a speech in French! 

In the Year 4 division, Hannah Smith came in 2nd place and Sara Ayala-Moreno also took a medal for 4th place. Congratulations also to Lucas Douchin in Year 5, who was 1st in the French background speaker division, and to Felipe Londono-Castro who came second in the Spanish background speaker division!

Last week a group of Upper Primary students visited the annual Wordplay event at the Queensland State Library. David Hartley interreacted with the students and spoke about how he develops ideas for his books. Kathy Hoopman spoke about the Secret Life a of an Author and how she uses props to help her imagination. Sally Rippen, the author of the Billy Brown books, explained how she develops her characters and illustrations.

Our St Peters Netball teams were presented with their medals and Coach's awards at Assembly recently. Thank you to the teams for their teamwork, persistence and skill development over the season, expertly coached by our staff.

In Term 3, a group of St Peters Lutheran College Springfield Year Two, Three and Four students have been learning about electronics and programming as part of a new Technology Club.

Each member of the club has been provided with their own kit of electronics parts including a tiny programmable computer called a micro:bit (https://microbit.org/). The micro:bit allows the students to learn not only about programming but also about physical computing and electronics.

This term students have learned to light up LEDs, display and send messages using radio waves, used sensors such as accelerometers to detect movement, create touch sensitive circuits, operate servos (tiny motors) and much more. Students have also had the opportunity to operate a laser cutter to cut and etch their own name badges. This was quite a unique learning experience for our younger students.

As our school is situated in the emerging ‘Smart City’ of Springfield we have been using this concept as a theme to frame our learning. We have used our laser cutter to create custom traffic lights which students then used to push their skills from making one LED turn on to learn to sequence green, yellow and red LEDs as used in the real world. As weeks progressed students also used conductive materials and paper to create sensors that were activated by toy cars. Light sensors allow students to create street lights which turn on and off depending on the ambient light level. Learning about controlling servos allowed students to learn to create gates and barriers and other moving features.

Learning in our new Technology Club has been a great example of ‘hard fun’ and ‘playful learning’. Students have shown great resilience and a growth mindset each week when pushing the limits of their abilities. Comments such as “I’m stuck…help” quickly turned into joyful exclamations of “I’ve done it, I’ve done it! Come and look at what I have made!” 

Some of our outstanding young musicians were nominated for this programme, and we extend our congratulations to the following students:

Melody C, Tiffany G, Lucy L, Amy S, Nikki S, Georgia W – these students have been placed on the reserve list.

Ian K was successful with his nomination for the programme – Amazing!

At the end of this term, Mr Aidan Nonsenzo will complete his practicum and will be leaving us. Mr Nonsenzo has made a valuable contribution during his 6 weeks, both in the classroom and in ensembles. We wish him well in his future teaching career.

Water Polo

Thank you to our coordinator Jenny Pavlides and all the Waterpolo coaches who have spent a good part of their Sunday afternoons over the past three weeks to trial record number of girls trialling for the 2019/20 season ahead. Teams are close to be finalised and girls will be emailed their placements.

Training schedules are being finalised and all information will be sent regarding waterpolo fees and training schedules.

Track & Field

All girls were sent an email earlier in the week asking them to sign on for the LAST QGSSSA Warm Up Meet of Term 3, which is being held on Friday 13 September at UQ. It is extremely important that girls attend this meet as the provisional 2019 QGSSSA Track & Field Team will have their final opportunity to compete. 

The QGSSSA Track & Field Championships are being held on Thursday 19 September.

Winter Fixtures

Good luck to all our Winter Fixtures teams playing their final games for 2019 playing St Aidan's. There have been some outstanding performances by teams across the various sports. 

Hockey

Last week we played against Clayfield College who fielded two teams only in both the Opens and the Senior A divisions. Whilst the opens went down the seniors were strong defeating Clayfield by 3-0. Hockey has had a great season this year with excellent camaraderie and everyone enjoying a friendly yet competitive atmosphere. 

Netball

Round 8, last weekend, proved to be a challenging yet rewarding round. All our ‘A’ teams enjoyed a bye while the windy conditions make it tricky for all the girls playing, particularly the shooters. We had some awesome results - our Opens were impressive again to win by 40; all our Year 7 teams did very well; our 8C team put up a great fight in their last game for the season; 9B couldn’t quite get across the line losing by one point, and; our 9C did their best against a bigger and stronger BGGS2 team. Our 10B pulled off a great win by one to keep their hopes alive for a premiership and our 10C team also won by one point in a tight game. A big well done to our Senior C team who finished with 17 goals - their highest score for the season; our Senior B team played well but run out of legs and our Senior A2 had an awesome victory over St Margaret’s. Well done Girls 😊

Round 9 vs St Aidan's this weekend is being held on the Hart's Road courts except for our 10C & 9C teams who will play BSHS at the QSNC at 8.45am and our 8C team have a bye. Girls, this week you will be playing for the ‘SHERIFF AWARD – For the on-court ENFORCER’ - what an amazing job Tracey has done each week with organising these awards, it makes for a lot of fun – THANK YOU TRACEY!

Tennis

Round 8 saw our Opens and Senior B teams win against Clayfield’s teams with very strong performances. Congratulations to these girls who have had shown some quality tennis throughout the season. This weekend we play against a very strong St Aidan's contingent and wish the girls the best of luck in their final rounds. Our girls should be proud of the way they continue to represent the College and the improvement in many individual performances throughout the season has been pleasing. Tennis is a tough mental game and for our girls to be winning an increasing number of games from their opponents as the season has gone on reflects girls achieving their ‘personal bests’. Well done to all Tennis players.

Volleyball

Last weekend (Round 8) saw us come up against Clayfield College. It was another great round of Volleyball where five of our six teams that played on the weekend won. 7A, 8A, 9A,10A, Snr A and Opens. Congratulations to those teams.

Good luck to all the teams playing this weekend in their last round for 2019. 7A remain undefeated whilst 8A have only dropped one match in the last two years.

The Volleyball break-up will be next Tuesday 17 September with details to be emailed to the girls.

Junior Softball (Years 7 - 9)

Well done to all our girls who have been trialling for our Junior Softball teams. Teams will be announced by the end of term. Training continues in Term 4 on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.

AIC Basketball and Tennis

Our boys faced St Laurence's College for the second last round of the AIC seasons over the weekend.  Aggregate results were shared between the two Colleges with St Laurence's taking the Basketball and St Peters taking the Tennis.  It was a very windy and dusty round, however, games were all played in good spirits and the adverse weather conditions didn’t hamper the competitive nature of our games.

Basketball

Congratulations to our 7D team and 2nd V team who both enjoyed victories in their Round 6 matches last weekend against St Laurence’s College. Very close losses for our 8A, 11A and 4th V teams demonstrated how hard they are working at training and the bounce of the ball at times proved crucial in their results. The Seconds game was very evenly contested throughout and came right down to the final possession. Will F nailed two clutch free throws towards the end of the fourth quarter with under 30 seconds remaining to give St Peters the lead which they defended brilliantly as the clock ran out. This team have displayed a great ability to perform under pressure over the course of the season and this game was yet another example of our players developing a 'team-first' mindset which our hard-working coaches have promoted all season long. This mindset is a main feature of the St Peters brand of Basketball which will again be on display this coming weekend for the final round of matches against St Patrick’s College.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish our Year 12 students the very best of luck for their final game of representing St Peters in AIC Basketball. This moment will be especially significant for our Year 12 boys who are in the 1st V team on Saturday. Thank you very much for your contributions and commitment throughout your time on the basketball court in a Saints Basketball singlet.

Playing uniforms will be redistributed prior to matches this weekend by coaches after they were collected last round. They will then be collected again after the final game for storage. It is vital that all players bring an St Peters PE shirt to the game this week and next to wear after their singlet has been collected. NO FREE DRESS ALLOWED. Please ensure that any availability concerns or otherwise are communicated to either myself or Mr Grose with as much advance notice as possible.

Lastly, the Basketball break-up will be on Monday 16 September (final week of term), from 3:30pm – 4:30pm on the Outdoor Basketball Courts. Boys have been asked to bring $5 to Sports House by this Friday to pay for the pizza and drink for the break-up. 

Tennis

Yet again our St Peters tennis players put on a strong display across all grades, resulting in wins in the majority of matches against St Laurence's College.  Well done to the following teams on their victories on the weekend; 1st IV, 11A, 11B, 10A, 10B, 9A, 9B, 8A, 8B, 5A and 5B.  Unfortunately, our Year 7 teams suffered their first losses for the season on Saturday in what otherwise would have been an unblemished season for them.  With a win against St Patrick's this weekend, these boys can hopefully gain themselves a shared premiership for the season.

Looking across the board, our Tennis cohort are in a position to potentially win 11 premierships out of 13 Year 7-12 divisions.  Let’s make sure that we finish the season with our foot on the pedal and we hope the run of wins continue as we go into the final round of the season.  As well as possibly taking away multiple premierships, we have the potential to win the overall AIC Tennis Aggregate Championship for the 8th year in a row!  Well done players and coaches, you have represented the College honourably this year, and I am looking forward to seeing our last games this weekend.

Players and parents please be advised that the end-of-season Tennis break-up will be on this Saturday at 1:00pm at the P&F Function Centre which overlooks Mayer Oval.  This means that our Seniors will have to travel back from North Brisbane, however, it is a very important event where our players as well as coaches are recognised for their hard work and awards are handed to players.  We look forward to celebrating another successful year of our St Peters Tennis players.

Well done to those boys who have committed to training and our Meets so far. Over the September school holidays there are two UQ Sport Athletics School Holidays Meets. The dates for these meets are as follows;

Waterpolo

AIC Waterpolo begins in Term 4 and expressions of interest went out to those boys who played in 2018.  If any boys would like details regarding the up and coming season, please contact Mr Lawn who will be coordinating the sport this year.  We entered three teams into the competition last year and we are looking to enter the same number of teams again in 2019.
