Throughout the year we recognise and celebrate the excellent work in each of our staff communities for what they do each and every day. In June we celebrated the valued contribution of our Admin Staff and Teacher Assistants on School Officers Day, saying thank you for the way they support the quality education program at St Peters. In Queensland we celebrate World Teachers’ day in the last week of October.

Last Wednesday, we shared appreciation for our hard-working educators in St Peters Outside School Hours Care and St Peters Kindergarten on Early Childhood Educators Day. Our educators in the early years, are the building blocks of learning. They help lay the foundation for education and discovery.

Outside School Hours Care is an important part of our school life as it provides a safe and stimulating environment before and after school as well as during the holidays. Under the guidance of Jennie Awcock, our Acting Coordinator and Adrienne Tie, our Acting Educational Leader, they provide child centred activities to build on children’s strengths and interests. We have 13 qualified staff working on the OSHC team.

Our OSHC educators plan and reflect daily so the program is relevant and based on the needs of the student in the service. The children’s ideas, inputs and opinions are sought and valued. They ensure that children have time to relax after a busy day at school and take part in leisure activities with their friends and peers. There is continual evaluation and reflection on all aspects of the children’s programs to improve practice. Plus Ultra!

Another important goal is the development of warm and positive relationships between the educators and the children. They do this by engaging in children’s play, asking questions, attaining to their needs and looking out for their well-being. They also work in partnership with families and the school to get to know each child.

We value each and every staff member in our community for the way they care about our students and each other. One of my favourite African proverbs - ‘it takes a village to raise a child’ - describes our mission as a community at St Peters each and every day. It is important that as a community we have a shared purpose with families to provide positive educational and developmental outcomes for each student.

A man filled his right pocket with tiny pebbles. Each time he saw something beautiful or that made him smile, was struck by a thought that brought him joy or made him thankful, he put one pebble from his right pocket and placed it into his left pocket. It became like second nature – and not before long he became a much happier person.

This little story made me think about what seems to be a common pattern: when we are unwell, burdened by the daily demands or challenged by experiences, we often seem to just forget the positives and the good that we have received in our lives. When we are well again and able to continue with life, it all seems ‘normal’ and we seem to settle back in quickly, taking for granted what we have been blessed with.

I thought of this story when I heard the invitation of the Psalm 103 to join in joyful praise for what God has done:

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name.
Bless the Lord, O my soul, and do not forget all his benefits— … who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies you with good as long as you live
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s!

The person whose eyes are opened for the gifts granted does not only live a grateful but also happier life. When we learn to ‘count our blessings’, - to put the pebble from the right into the left pocket - we are more content, may sing and greet each day joyfully and share what we have received to bring joy to others around us. Naming what we have received each day may help us to give thanks to God, the giver of life, but also to endure the tougher times. Because God abides with us, listens to our worries and angst and is happy to bear them for us – an invitation to learn to pray, to communicate with the One who deeply cares and has compassion on us, his people.

Bless the Lord, O my soul! – may this become your song, counting your blessings in the midst of finishing off the huge amount of work that needs to be done before the holidays can be enjoyed. We are nearly there…. Until then God bless and keep you and hold you in the palm of his hand!

Enrolment interest at the College is at unprecedented levels with many new families choosing our area to call ‘home’.  

As a current family, we will always work with you to give you priority for new enrolment applications for younger siblings.

However, we can only work with you if we have received an enrolment application.  

Many year levels are now at capacity for 2022 and families seeking entry next year who have not yet made enrolment applications are strongly advised to have an immediate conversation with the enrolments team to discuss your individual circumstances.

Waitlists are also now building for entry in 2023 and beyond to 2024. If you have a younger child seeking enrolment for school you are advised to make an enrolment application as soon as possible, and by Tuesday, October 5 2021, to give your child the best possible chance of a position at the College.

The Term 3 Brisbane West Primary Chess Competition took place on Thursday 2nd September. There were around 40 participants from Brisbane West schools taking part. St Peters Springfield Year 5 student, Yuvi K finished in 2nd place in the Open Category. Congratulations on a wonderful achievement!

BSRA Rowing Head of the River

Congratulations to all who represented the College at the BSRA Head of the River on Sunday including Jessica-Marie G, Lillian K, Tiare R, Ruby-Jane K, Zara S and Alisha D. The girls have been training since the end of Term 1 and it has been great to see the progress these girls have made in that time.

Congratulations to Jess in Year 12 who represented the First VIII and finished in a solid 6th position against some very good crews. This is Jess’s 2nd year in the 1st VIII and she has done a great job leading the Springfield girls into rowing. Lillian, Tiare and Zara all finished 4th respectively in their races. We thank Mr Hicks and his coaches for their efforts throughout the season. Well done girls!

QGSSSA Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships

Congratulations to all girls who represented the College at the QGSSSA Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships last Wednesday. Kayla T in Year 11, Zoe C in Year 10 and Hannah T in Year 7 all competed on the day in various disciplines. All girls have enjoyed the season and inspired by the performance of other teams which they will take forward into next year.

Vicki Wilson Netball

Last week, St Peters competed in the Vicki Wilson Netball Finals at Nissan Arena with 2 teams competing in the Open and Junior divisions. Larika M, Kiara C, Chloe D, Mia B and Ella M played in the Open Girls team while Jazelle D, Leilani F and Taylah H played with the Junior team. Well done to the Open team who finished undefeated throughout the whole tournament finishing 3rd overall. Well done to the Junior team who finished overall. The girls have put in many hours throughout the season.

WDNA Netball

Congratulations to all WDNA Primary Girls Netball teams who finished their season last Saturday. The girls have been training since the middle of Term 1 and played through a full club season. The development of the girls has been great throughout the season. Well done to the Year 5 team who narrowly lost the final on Saturday after going through the season undefeated. We thank all coaches –

Miss Sam Fulcher, Miss Gabby Hines, Mr Mathew Knight and Mrs Caitlin Knight for guiding the girls through the season. We look forward to seeing all girls back again next year!

QGSSSA and AIC Final Rounds

This Saturday will be the final round of sport for Term 3 for QGSSSA and AIC teams. It has been a big term for sport with over 150 students involved in QGSSSA Netball, Hockey, Volleyball, Tennis and AIC Basketball and Tennis. Semester 2 Secondary Sport Photos will take place next Wednesday 15th September at St Peters Indooroopilly. Students who have represented the College in Sport in Semester 2 will be required for photos. What a busy week I have enjoyed!

Last Wednesday I saw my first Rhythmic Gymnastics Championship; this rescheduled event was enjoyed by all and our girls performed amazingly well. Thank you to our Coaches who were led by our amazing Head Coach Phoebe and special thanks to Mrs Nicole Maynard who in her first year of coordinating did an incredible job.

My Thursday & Friday were spent at Nissan Arena for the Vicki Wilson Netball State Championships. What an amazing few days of Netball by both our Open & Junior (Years 7-9) teams, the girls gave their all representing our College and we are super proud of them, please see below for a full summary.

Early Saturday morning, I headed on the bus that departed at 5.45am to the Gold Coast with our Tennis, Volleyball & Netball teams to take on St Hilda’s. It was a day of scattered rain which saw the third round of Netball finish at ¾ time and not a lot of Tennis being played. Volleyball had an amazing round with all teams showing so much improvement which was evident to see. 

Finally, on Sunday I ventured to my second Head of the River. I really loved the experience and watching our girls give their all on the water. Well done to all girls, the improvement from last year was huge and special mention must go to Giselle G for her first place in the Year 11 single scull, Ella H for her third place in the Year 12 single scull & our Year 9, 2nd Division Quad who did amazing finishing in second place. Girls your dedication and commitment to Rowing throughout the season has been inspirational for all. As we head towards the end of the Rowing season a big thank you to our Coaches and Rowing Coordinator, Mr Peter Hicks, for their efforts this year. Rowing is a very logistical sport and Mr Hicks spends long days at the shed with teaching in between. All his efforts have been greatly appreciated by the girls and the College.

To all girls, particularly our Year 12 girls playing in their last games representing St Peters this weekend, we wish you all the best.

Round 8 Wrap v St Hilda’s

The gloomy weather and the early start did not dampen the spirits of our Netball girls last Saturday as we headed down the highway to take on St Hilda’s. With wins in all teams bar one, the improvement across our program was again evident to see. Our 10A & 8/9C games were cut short due to the showers of rain but the feedback I received was they loved the chance to play in the rain!!

A massive thank you to the many parents that drove their daughters down the coast to allow them to get back for club games/finals, we really appreciate your support 😊

VICKI WILSON NETBALL STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Last Thursday and Friday was spent at Nissan Arena for the rescheduled Vicki Wilson Netball Queensland State Championships. St Peters fielded both a Senior Team and a combined Years 7-9 Junior Team and what a few days it was!

St Peters qualified both teams in the preliminary rounds earlier in the year to represent the Met West Region at the State Championships. We set up camp outside on the plaza due to Indoor Stadium restrictions and what fun we enjoyed together along with some amazing Netball that was played.

Our Senior team finished in third place in disappointing circumstances. After a hard-fought Semi Final with Somerset College where at the end of the game the score was level, we unfortunately did not proceed to the Grand Final on a countback of games played in the pools. Somerset went on to win the tournament easily. Our girls, led by captains Larika M & Olivia R, Kiara C, Chloe D, Mia B, Ella Mc, Renee C, Millie W, Sian Z, Millie T and with amazing support from injured Kayla N, gave their all over the two days and played a very high standard of Netball, it was amazing to watch!

Our Junior team - Jazelle D, Alice H, Leilani F, Taylah H, Amelia R, Romi VB, Grace D, Willow P, Ainsley T, Julia S and Charlotta E - finished in fourteenth place and what a great job these girls did over the two days, the improvement was exciting to watch!

Special thanks to our Coaches Tracey, Patti and Martina, their teaching of the game of Netball was outstanding. To watch the girls, embrace the experience and soak up the pressure of performing at this level was amazing to see. We are so grateful to have Trace & Patti leading our Netball Program.

The gloomy weather and early start on Saturday Morning did not dampen the St Peters spirit as the girls eagerly travelled down by bus to the St Hilda’s Tennis courts. After a few rounds of Uno, the courts were eventually dry, and everyone was excited to start doubles. The girls demonstrated great teamwork and enthusiasm but unfortunately, the downpour of rain put a stop to Round 8. Thank you girls for the continuous positive attitude that everyone brings to the courts every week!

Round 8 Wrap v St Hilda’s

After sharing the honours away at Moreton Bay last week, the Volleyball girls were fired up for a big day out on another long road trip, this time taking on St Hilda’s away at Southport.  There were a few tired eyes fronting up at the bus stop around 5:30am. Saturday morning but by the time we arrived ready for the first round of matches there was plenty of energy among the girls. The first three matches on court saw the Senior B, 9B and 7B teams take to the floor. All three games were well contested, finishing in 2-1 results, the Senior B and 9B teams coming out on top and the 7B team putting in a fantastic team effort before narrowly missing out in the third set.

The second round of matches saw some dominant performances by the St Peters teams. The Senior A team dominating all three sets, likewise the 9As who have shown no signs of slowing down despite having a number of team changes due to Ironbark mid-season. The 7A team also recorded a terrific win fighting their way to a 15-13 win in the third set on the back of terrific three touch volleyball and some strong serving at the death.

The 10B, 8B and Open teams were the next to play. The 10 Bs dropped a very tight first set 24-26 before lifting their game and winning the final two sets convincingly. The 8B girls continued their fine form winning the first set comfortably before claiming the remaining sets in a hard-fought tussle. The Open girls started on fire racing to a 9-0 lead before some lapses in concentration cost them a few points and they found themselves down midway through the first set. Eventually the girls were able fight through their tough patches to claim the first set 26-24 before steamrolling through the second and third sets dropping just 22 more points in securing the straight sets victory 3-0.

Many of the girls departed at this stage, taking the early bus back to St Peters, but the 10A and 8A teams were determined to continue the good run of results and did so in style, both teams winning 3-0 with the 8As being rewarded for the work they have been putting into consistently attacking with their third touch, and the 10A girls continuing their domination of their division winning all three sets comfortably.

Congratulations to all of the teams and coaches on an exceptional performance this week, especially to our players of the week: Charli, Charlotte, Amelia, Lacy, Ellie, Juliet, Camilla, Indiana, Sophie, Erin and Jessica!

ROWING

Congratulations to the Rowing girls on a fantastic Head of the River Regatta on Sunday.  The program was able to achieve a fourth place in the percentage cup calculations, which is the best in living memory.  

Particular congratulations must be made to Giselle G (Year 11) who went undefeated in the Year 11 single scull event though out the season and won Gold on Sunday.  Congratulations to 2021 Rowing captain Ella H (Year 12) who won bronze on Sunday in the Year 12 single scull race in her last year Rowing for the college after five years of service to the Rowing Program – congratulations Ella on your result and thank you for your service to the Rowing Program.  

Congratulations also to the Year 9 Girls Division 2 quad scull who also achieved second place and a silver medal at the Head of the River.  The crew made up of Esther L, Lara A, Neve M, Tiare R and Maya C achieve a second place in all lead up races during the season.

The fourth place in the percentage cup is a promising result for the Program moving forward and not achieved unless all crews perform on the day.  It was pleasing to see that crews from across the shed were able to achieve their best results for the season on Sunday.  

The Rowing Program will be heading to the QLD State Schools Rowing Championships in early September.  Good luck to those students selected to go to this event.

The QGSSSA is introducing AFL Skill Development Sessions and Gala Days in preparation for the introduction of AFL as a competition in 2022. This Term 4 opportunity is open to all girls in Years 7 – 11

It is important to note, AFL will be offered for Years 10, 11 & 12 girls in Term 1 next year, The GIRLS WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PLAY SOFTBALL & AFL, they will have to choose one.

Years 7, 8 & 9 AFL will be played in Term 4 next year.

This week we heard the announcement from Queensland Rugby of their two Under 16 Queensland Teams (Maroon & White). We would like to congratulate Jirra T (Year 11) who was select on the wing (No. 14) for the Queensland Maroon U16 team. Well done Jirra on your selection to represent Queensland in Rugby Union.

We now enter into our last round (Round 7) of AIC Tennis and Basketball for Term 3. It has been great to be able to support and watch our St Peters students both train and compete over the past weeks. The enthusiasm, sportsmanship and commitment which our boys have displayed this term has been just sensational. We now look forward to playing Iona College this weekend in Round 7.

Last Thursday evening, 106 of our St Peters Track & Field athletes came together to compete at the first of the AIC Track & Field Lead Up Meets at QSAC. It was magnificent to see the boys showcase weeks of training and skill development into their first Track & Field competition. Overall, St Peters were solid across all event groups and show some great promise for the up and coming AIC Track & Field Championships early in October.

AIC Basketball & Tennis

As previously mentioned, this weekend is Round 7 of AIC Tennis and Basketball and the concluding round of fixture games for AIC Term 3 Sport.

St Peters will verse Iona College from Years 5 to Year 12. Our Senior Teams will play ‘home’ in both Basketball and Tennis whilst our Junior teams will play at ‘away’ to Iona College.

We request all boys playing Basketball or Tennis for St Peters to please check the St Peters App for this weekend’s times and venue details.

St Peters Track & Field

All boys in Junior High (Years 7 to 9) and Senior School (Years 10 to 12) have now been sent multiple informational emails about the AIC lead up meets and signing on process. We encourage all our St Peters athletes to keep up their training and motivation so to strongly compete at the AIC Track & Field Championships which are scheduled for Friday 8 and Saturday 9 October at QSAC, Nathan.

Also, we encourage all our St Peters Track & Field athletes to look at joining a local athletics club and register with Queensland Athletics (QA). Competing regularly at organised Track & Field meets and competition is one of the best ways to improve and serve as a great training experience as well.

With Toowong Harriers Athletics Club located within five minutes of St Peters Lutheran College, I encourage all our St Peters athletes to strongly consider joining and regularly competing at QA competitions. This is also a great way for our younger athletes (11-14 years) to improve their coordination, skills, speed and overall fitness level.

Wet Weather and Cancellations

With regards to wet weather and any unforeseen or potential cancellations of AIC sports, please ensure that you keep an eye out for notifications and alerts via the St Peters App.

Cricket

Information regarding the St Peters Lutheran College Springfield Sport program will be communicated through a range of modes including email, St Peters App and Cornerstone. Students and parents will primarily receive information from the Head of Sport at Springfield but at times may also receive information from the Girls and Boys Sport Coordinators or individual Sport Coordinators. Parents and students are encouraged to download and use the St Peters App for information regarding the Sport program.

All information regarding the St Peters Lutheran College Sport program including sport training times and venues, draws, coordinator details and wet weather arrangements can be found on the St Peters App. 

*Please ensure that you update your preferences in the Settings> Subscriptions section of the app so that you only receive information from your appointed Campus or area of interest that are relevant to your family e.g. Springfield or Sports.
