Year 6 Primary Years Programme Journey: Exploration and Creativity in Action
The Year 6 students have been fully immersed in a variety of activities that fuel their learning, creativity and passion as part of their PYP journey. One highlight has been their exploration of the IB Learner Profile. Students used their creative skills to design posters on Canva, selecting a learner profile attribute and describing it in their own words. These creations were brought to life through Tableaus—freeze-frame representations of the profiles. Adding to the excitement, Year 1 buddies joined in, allowing the older students to teach and mentor their younger peers in creating and presenting learner profile tables. This moment of collaboration and shared learning was a joy for everyone involved.
There was an opportunity to learn about photography during a tech crew workshop, the students focused on the importance of angles and focus in capturing meaningful photos. The learning didn’t stop there, as a guest speaker from the Human Library shared insights on neurodiversity, psychology and entrepreneurship, broadening students’ understanding of diverse perspectives.
As part of their Year 6 Exhibition journey, the students dove into project exploration, brainstorming ideas and passions for their exhibition projects. Each student received a journal to document their progress, which they eagerly personalised. In addition, they created transdisciplinary theme posters, which now serve as valuable resources in the classroom.
A particularly exciting event was the Year 6 Amazing Race, where students worked in teams to navigate the school and complete challenges. This experience was not only fun but also fostered teamwork and problem-solving skills. Another Human Library guest, Tommy, shared an inspiring story from his childhood in Kenya, where a small act of kindness changed his life and opened the door to education. This talk sparked meaningful reflection among the students.
Throughout this journey, the students also explored their individual passions during “Passion Day.” From fashion to architecture to social issues, students were encouraged to think about how their passions could translate into action through their Exhibition projects. They learned about the different types of action—direct, indirect, research, and advocacy—and how their projects could make a positive impact on their communities and the world.
As Year 6 prepared for their Exhibition, students worked together to finalise their group projects, completed surveys to align with peers who shared similar interests and designed their official invitations. The excitement built as each group began to shape their projects and refine their ideas for turning passions into meaningful action. The school also welcomed NE Green to collect donation bags, encouraging students to take part in real-world action for a cause.
In the later stages of their journey, students focused on completing reflections, organising their research, and beginning to develop the art components for their projects. The creativity was evident as they collaborated on their artwork, shared materials, and supported each other throughout the process. Each student took pride in their creations and the progress they’ve made so far.
The Year 6 cohort is buzzing with excitement and anticipation as they continue their Exhibition journey. They are eager to see how their passions will transform into impactful actions, and they look forward to sharing their work with the school community on 16 October at 5:00pm in the Junior High Precinct.
