Last term, we announced an evolved Student Leadership Model for St Peters Springfield – Portfolio Leadership Teams. The role of Student Portfolio Teams is to provide leadership opportunities that build on strengths within the College, by students, and for students. Each portfolio will be under the guidance of a member of our staff.
The three main goals for the leaders in their Portfolios are to:
Develop the specific portfolio of St Peters Springfield.
Foster College spirit and embody Care, Dignity and Respect.
Recognise and highlight the achievements of individuals in these portfolios.
We are pleased to announce that after a rigorous and transparent selection process, the new leaders of each portfolio are below. The 2023 College Captains will be announced on Monday during our Student Leader induction ceremony.
We know from research that young people want to gradually gain more control in their lives and begin to have more influence of events in their world. Resilience research helps us to identify how resilient youth have the confidence to make life better even in adverse conditions. With the opportunity for autonomy, the young person learns that they have power. Anyone who has worked with adolescents will attest to observing how young people exhibit a heightened desire for autonomy.
As I have stated previously, one of the features of our new portfolio leadership structure is that both students and teachers will co-create the vision and expectations within each portfolio. In this sense, teachers and students will share the learning and leadership experiences. As all students in Years 7-12 will have the opportunity to join a portfolio, all students will have an authentic avenue for having their voices heard and validated.
Our goal is for students to develop their sense of agency and begin to have a greater influence on the culture of our college. I am really excited to see the influence our new leaders will have in the coming year.

Psalm 8
Psalm 8: “Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory
in the heavens.
Through the praise of children and infants
you have established a stronghold against your enemies.
When I consider your heavens,
the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,
what is humankind that you are mindful of them,
human beings that you care for them?
You have made them a little lower than the angels
and crowned them with glory and honour.
You made them rulers over the works of your hands;
you put everything under their feet.”
It is one thing to be surrounded by beauty and gift; it is another to recognize it and speak it. I shall never forget camping in the Flinders Rangers with my year 10 class and our Chaplain. We lay on blankets to watch the Milky Way rise over the ridge. Pastor Geoff rehearsed a list of astonishing statistics about the numbers and distances of stars in the galaxy, comparing sizes of various celestial beings with various everyday objects--and then he closed our time of worship by reciting Psalm 8. I was in awe of the size and scope of the universe, of my smallness in this huge expanse, and yet still felt that nearness of a God who cares for me personally despite this enormous scope.
I experienced that sort of feeling again recently during the holidays as I viewed a clear and open night sky in absolute silence (except for the occasion awestruck “wow!”) and thought about our place and our calling in this universe.
Before we claim dominion in this world (which means responsibility rather than power), we do well to hear how this psalm reminds us to be humble. We are humbled with the wonders of the heavens, with the passion of children and especially with the power of God, who holds us all in his care and calls us to be that care in his world.
God, remind us to be humble, so that our power in this world would be the power of trust, awe and love. Amen.

Resilience – the ability to recover quickly from or cope with difficult, challenging, hurtful, sad or disappointing circumstances.
Resilience – the happy knack of being able to bungee jump the pitfalls of life.
Next week we are having Ben Pettingill out to talk about resilience – how you can grow it, harness it and have more of it! We are very excited for this much anticipated event.
Below are some tips for you to ponder this week – how can you be more resilient?
Ask for help and support when you need it
Look for ways around challenges but DON’T GIVE UP
Accept that you cannot stop things from going wrong in your life
View mistakes as an opportunity for learning and growth
Surround yourself with people who make you feel good
Keep things in perspective
Set SMART goals and COMMIT to achieving them
Prioritise self-care, rest and time for exercise

On Thursday, students participated in a Gold Rush experience with Eureka Excursions at Belivah as part of their Unit of Inquiry on ‘How exploration and discovery have changed our future’. Students dressed up in costume for the 1850’s Gold Rush era, and learnt skills in tent making, damper making, mining, roles of individuals in the 1850s’, and how to purchase a gold digger’s licence Some of the highlights of the day included haggling at the general convenience store, learning about the tools used in the 1850’s, and searching for gold in a simulated New South Wales gold field township of 1854. They were accompanied by Ms Susan Levitt (5S Teacher), Mr Nick Brayne (5T teacher) and Ms Kaylah Hope (teacher assistant). It was an exciting day which involved a wonderful learning experience for students.

Year 12 Formal
Maya Angelou once said, “Nothing can dim the light that shines from within”. This was the experience and imprint the year 12 cohort lived up to on the night of their formal. Their sparkle and spunk shone through as they arrived in style, glammed up to enjoy the evening. The Year 12 formal was a spectacular evening. Held at the picturesque Hillstone venue at St Lucia, the ladies dazzled and sparkled, and the gentlemen looked dapper and fine.
It was a delight for staff and students to mingle, enjoy some fine dining and dance the night away together. It was a night to sparkle, a night many have dreamed of, a night to enjoy, a magical night where memories were made and celebrations were had. It was a time for the Year 12s to have one last bash as a cohort before they head off into their final examinations. And it truly was a great night where the light from within each Year 12 shone bright.

ALL-SCHOOLS TOUCH COMPETITION
Last week a St Peters U13 & U15 Touch teams ventured to the Gold Coast Performance Centre at Runaway Bay for the Queensland All School Touch Tournament. With over 170 teams competing over the five-day tournament, it was great to see the maroon and white of St Peters competing for the second year in a row.
Over the two days of competing in the minor rounds, the girls played against quality opposition with many Touch Excellence Schools participating. The girls performed well and the improvement over the two days was pleasing to see. The exposure to this level of Touch can only improve our girls as we look forward to the next QGSSSA Touch season.
U13 Team results: 3 wins, 2 draws & 2 losses
U15 Team results: 2 wins & 4 losses
Congratulations girls, you represented St Peters with pride and obviously had lots of fun along the way.
Special thanks to our coordinator for this tournament, Belinda Byrne, whose organisation and communication was fantastic and to our coaches Chris, Ropati & Laura, thank you for all you did to give the girls this opportunity.
We must also thank the parents for their support.

Good luck to the Years 7 - 9 girls who will be competing this Saturday. Go Saints!
Last Saturday 8 October saw a new concept for the Brisbane Water Polo Community with all teams entering the 2022/23 BWPI competition being put through mini trial games (two x four-minute halves). Some teams played two games others three depending on numbers of teams registered in each division.
St Peters have entered nine teams into the competition.
It was wonderful to watch our girls wearing the catsuits and tying up their caps ready to dive into the new season.
We had 16 girls playing the game of Water Polo for the very first time. There was a lot of nervous energy poolside but from all reports our teams competed very well. We are looking forward to this coming Saturday to do it all again so we can be graded into competitive correct divisions for the season.

St Peters AIC Track & Field excel again 2022
On Thursday 6 and Friday 7 October, St Peters Boys Track & Field Team competed at the 24th annual AIC Track & Field Championships, QSAC, Nathan. Our athletes rose to the challenge presented to them and in turn lifted for the occasion across all events areas. The final results were, in parts, comparable to our best ever aggregate result. St Peters finished in overall second (2nd) place again in 2022 making it four consecutive seconds, finishing behind Marist College.
As a College community, we could not be prouder of our athletes - both those who competed across the two days of the championships, and those who were reserves and supported their peers so strongly.
