Creative. Resilient. Persevering. Problem-solving. Collaborative. These are some of the qualities that we want our students to have as part of their DNA when they leave St Peters. However, as adults, we understand that these attributes are not miraculously bestowed upon students as they leave school and enter the ‘grown-up’ world. They are qualities that need to be nurtured throughout childhood and during their teenage years.

Unharnessing creativity, finding the determination to keep going when the end seems far away, grappling with problems that don’t have simple solutions often begin as frail, flickering lights easily snuffed out through self-doubt, lack of immediate success or the callousness of others. It is often tempting to withdraw and to give up when success is elusive. Part of our job as parents and teachers is to not allow our young people to take the easy option. We need to encourage them to explore, to challenge and to take risks while we walk alongside supporting and guiding them. We need to pick them up when they fall down, and celebrate with them when they fly high.

On this week’s Secondary School Assembly, it was a joy to acknowledge some of our students who are flying high. Successes in Music examinations were celebrated and personal accomplishment and acts of service recognised through Principal’s Awards.

Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Awards were presented to Lena D., Lauren J., and Yusha K. These awards represent the culmination of almost two years of stretching themselves through adventure treks, community service and the acquisition of new skills.

Our Assembly concluded with the presentation of the 2020 Long Tan awards. These awards commemorate the Battle of Long Tan when a patrol of Australian soldiers held their ground against 2500 enemy soldiers. The awards are given by the Australian Defence Forces to a Year 10 and Year 12 student who demonstrate the values of these young soldiers—teamwork, service, honour and loyalty. The 2020 awards were presented to Kayla T. (Year 10) and Zac H. (Year 12).

The Bible verse on the St Peters Graduate Tree envisions our graduates this way:

They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit. (Jeremiah 17:8)

Encouraging our students as they establish roots of resilience and perseverance which will keep them firm against the buffeting winds of the world and nurturing them as they unfold green leaves of creativity, compassion and courage which will bear fruit in their world is one of the great privileges of teaching.

During the holidays I did what I love doing during spring every year, I worked in my garden, replanted, fed my plants and put fertilizer into all the garden beds. After the hands on work I love to sit back, to wait and see how the plants respond by growing, putting out tiny buds that evolve into beautiful flowers. It is eye catching beauty, a joy for my heart and soul, a retreat every day when I come home.

Just look at the blossoming Jacaranda trees around and you may get a glimpse of spring telling the story of new life even in the midst of uncertain times. You may understand the quote that has been ascribed to Martin Luther: “Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces, I would still plant my apple tree” - the apple tree is a sign of hope. To plant an apple tree is a sign of faith in the face of uncertainties and in defiance of challenges, of scary and unsettling times.

The fertilizing and planting in spring is a healing and affirming exercise, that nourishes the hope that I can make a difference today – as small as it may be - that impacts tomorrow. It is an act of defiance against all the follies, the insanities and freakiness of the world, trusting that the one who sends the rains and makes the sun shine, who allows growth and seasons at their given time, allows new life, new beginnings and a future for us all. The quote about the apple tree may depict that we can still take responsibility for what we are able to do now and today, what is necessary and requested of us to do, the planting and nourishing what we may be capable of contributing, but that it may take time and require patience for growth to happen. It is not ours to will. We must wait until the day when we see the flowers in bloom and will be able to harvest the fruit, when we are able to harvest the fruit of our labour.

May God grant us today, every day, to live with hope so that we can continue doing what we are called to do and – with God's blessings – reap the future he promises to us all!

With the expansion of tuckshop services a naming competition was held last term for what will legitimately be our café. We are thrilled to announce Year 1 student, Aaroosha J., has won the café naming competition and the tuckshop will be renamed as Hearts Café.

The heart is a central feature of the Luther Rose and subsequently our College crest. The image of three connected and open hearts in the new café logo represents our connection in the community. We are looking forward to when parents, staff and students, can once again freely gather on-site at our new Hearts Café.

Thank you to all the students who submitted entries. We were tempted by some of the French names proposed and enjoyed the cleverness of others.

Submit an artwork and comment on how the artwork shows your vision for Ipswich. You could win a prize and have your artwork published in Council’s Corporate Plan and/or on Council’s website. The winning entries will also be exhibited at the Ipswich Art Gallery.

This year’s Book Week will be a little different, but it will still be lots of fun to celebrate the love of reading! The theme is ‘Curious Creatures, Wild Minds’. Think jungles, sea creatures, dinosaurs, imaginary and mythological animals, adventurers, explorers and scientists. Students will take part in the Book Week Parade, there will also be many wonderful activities including guest readers and the Scholastic Book Fair which will run in the Hub from 21 – 28 October.  Students will be able to take home a wish-list and how to purchase the books online. Information will be sent out to families this week about the Book Fair. 

There will be two separate parades for Lower and Upper primary. 

The times for our parades on Wednesday 21 October will be:

• 8:15 am: Years 4-6
• 10:00 am: Prep – Year 3

Unfortunately, family members will not be able attend our parade this year, but we will have lots of videos and photos of our Book Week Parade to share with you.

Thank you again to our amazing Springfield P&F Committee for organising our personal hand sanitisers again for this term. Hand sanitisers are a huge benefit in assisting our staff and students with maintaining our hygiene standards program. Personal hand sanitisers make it easy for everyone to be hygienic. Our students all know their responsibility and also the importance of the 20-second hand washing routine suggested by Queensland Health. It’s a simple, routine task and it helps make us all healthier. 

Benefits of waterless hand sanitiser:

• supports our hand washing program.
• act quickly to kill microorganisms on hands.
• are more accessible than sinks.
• reduce bacterial counts on hands.
• do not promote antimicrobial resistance.
• can be less irritating to skin than soap and water.

During Term 3, our Year 3 students learnt about heat sources, heat transfer and heat conductors. In groups, they put their learning into action and designed many different types of unique solar ovens using materials that conducted heat with the goal of cooking an egg and melting chocolate. On a warm and windy day, the students tested their solar ovens. The chocolate melted quickly, but unfortunately the eggs didn’t cook. The students reflected that on a hotter day, with less wind, the eggs may have cooked. It was great to see our students working collaboratively and using problem solving skills to design and create their solar ovens!

Thank you to Brainstorm Productions for their production of Buddies for our Year 1 - 6 students. The production is a resilience program for primary school students using educational theatre to promote cyber safety, friendship and anti-bullying.

The Buddies production follows the journey of two students as they discover the secrets to building healthy relationships and staying safe online.

Students learn important lessons about cyber safety, such as not sharing passwords, not talking to strangers, and how to protect their privacy on apps and games.

The production highlights that a true friend is someone who is kind, tells the truth, listens, makes you feel safe and allows you to be yourself.

Last term we had a friendly lunchtime basketball competition with Year 5 and 6 students. The competition was held over a few days with some exciting semi-finals!

At the end of Term 3, our Year 6 students participated in an exciting four-day ‘Law & Order’ themed tour of Brisbane. This tour tied in with the Year 6 Term 4 inquiry study of government, law and democracy as students will attempt to answer the question ’How do laws create order?’. The experience gave students an opportunity to learn outside of the classroom and was conducted in lieu of the annual trip to Canberra.

Our students were excited to explore some of Brisbane’s rich historical landmarks and local institutions which have ensured that order was maintained in our past. Hands-on experiences thoroughly engaged our students and extended their knowledge and understanding of processes which maintain law and order.  

Students visited Queensland Parliament House, the Victoria Army Barracks Brisbane, Boggo Road Gaol, Queensland Supreme Court, Brisbane Science Centre and many other interesting places. They enjoyed learning about the passing of a Bill in Parliament, some responsibilities of local, state and federal governments, how civil and criminal law cases are trialled and how Brisbane citizens have been protected up to today.

Our four-day tour concluded with a BBQ and movie evening in the Hub, and all students enjoyed reflecting upon their observations and favourite experiences of the week.

Monday Comments:

Suhani D. (6S): “Today I learnt there are three levels of government in Australia: Federal, which deals with the whole of Australia and is led by the Prime Minister (Scott Morrison); State, which looks after each State in Australia (e.g. Queensland); and Local, which consists of local councils which look after our suburbs. I also learnt the Governor General is a representative of the Queen, the process of making a law starts with passing a Bill and our local State Government representative is Mrs Charis Mullen. I wonder how hard is it to get into the State or Federal government?”

Jack M. (6S): “Today I discovered many things about Parliament and order in society. I learnt there are 93 members in parliament, the person calling for order is the Speaker and the Governor General acts on the Queen’s behalf. I thought the interior design of Queensland Parliament House was beautiful, with the gold lining the ceilings and the crystal chandeliers. The whole experience was breath-taking. During the mock parliament sitting I was the Premier and I got to sit in Anastasia Palaszczuk’s seat; it was quite exciting being that close to a person who has so much power.”

Tuesday Comments:

Kayden G. (6T): “My favourite activity on Tuesday was doing the mock-trial in the Actual Chief Justice Court! It was immersive and interactive to sit in an actual court chair and discuss the various rules of court and then put them into practice. Another interesting part was when we witnessed five minutes of an actual court case between two different companies; it was confusing to hear one speaker quote different paragraphs from different volumes of different law books.”

Tushitha S. (6T): “The trip to the Supreme Court and the Police Museum was fascinating. At the Supreme Court, the role play was fun to watch as my classmates acted out an actual case that happened many years ago. At the Political Museum, the information about all the police artefacts was interesting. Learning about all of the changes made to police uniforms until now was engaging.”

Wednesday Comments:

Ian K. (6S): “I enjoyed learning about the military and the Victoria Barracks’ history. The most fascinating topic was the guns; there were big guns that shot very far and some guns which were made to target specific classes. Some guns targeted the Air Force and the other guns targeted tanks on the ground. From the barracks I was able to get to get a good view of the city and learnt the old kitchens had to be in separate small rooms to reduce the risk of fire.”

Akshara P. (6T): “I learnt a lot today about the Army and the history of Brisbane. I learnt soldiers wore emu plumes on their hats and the main building at the Victoria Army Barracks was built in 1864. The scones we ate in a building called ‘The Mess’ were delicious, I don’t know exactly why it is called the mess but it was mainly used to socialise in the past. I loved looking at the artefacts and uniforms soldiers wore when going to war. I have now learnt a lot about the military. The walk to Roma Parklands was interesting because we explored the city a little bit. It was a lovely experience!”

Thursday Comments:

Isabelle C. (6T): “Today we went to the Boggo Road Gaol and went inside the Gaol Cells and learnt about the inmates of the past. We also visited the Spark Lab At the Queensland Museum, which was interesting because there were so many interesting activities to do — my top two activities were the spinning chair and the rope-pull to race someone. We also saw a holographic image of the universe and I observed Earth, Saturn and the Moon. We came back to school and watched Onward and enjoyed a fantastic BBQ.”

Kaiden G. (6S): “I learnt about the Boggo Road Gaol. I am pretty sure the gallows were in Section E of the Gaol. Sections F and D were the only other sections other than the yard and the place to clean the cans was the containment part for the prisoners. Slim Halliday was a prisoner in D9 who was an escape artist and escaped many times. The Science Lab was the best fun though!”

This term, Year 5 students are completing an inquiry unit on the discoveries surrounding the Australian Gold Rush. As our provocation, students went on an excursion to 'Petersville' which transported them back in time to 1854. Students dressed up for the day and took part in role-playing activities that simulated life as a miner by panning and cradling for gold, and as a shop keeper and customer by haggling over the best price for goods.  Students also built huts out of sticks with fabric and ropes, and used their orienteering skills to find a bushranger. When students found a nugget of gold in their goldfield, they had to shout ‘Eureka’ and haggled at the Claims Office for their money. It was a unique experience for our students and immersed them in Australia's history and culture!

USQ Head Start is our academic extension program where you can study one university subject during a semester, allowing you to get a head start on your university studies early.

Semester 1 entry is only for currently enrolled Year 11 and 12 students. Semester 2 & 3 entry is available for Year 10, 11 & 12 students as long as they meet all other entry requirements.

In an extremely thoughtful gesture Year 11 created some care packages for our Year 12 students this week to say good luck for the upcoming external exams. The packs contained personalised and inspirational notes from the Year 11 cohort, as well as snack food and other handy items. Thank you to our incredible Year 11 students for your time and effort into arranging these packs and to Daniel S., Lucy O., Josh C. and Yash G. for organising the surprise presentation for the Year 12 cohort.

State Honours Ensemble Program Primary

The State Honours Ensemble Program is managed by Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University, with school nominating outstanding instrumentalists. 

Congratulations are due to Ian K, who has been accepted as part of the Strings Primary Program.  This is a notable achievement as there is an incredibly high standard for accepted students.

Three other students – Rahul K, Jack M and Tushitha S – have been offered places on the Reserve List.  Congratulations also to these students, who have only been learning a short time and have made outstanding progress to meet the entry criteria.

Creative Expressions 2020

During third term, Primary Music classes enjoyed preparing performances for the Creative Expressions 2020 Concert.  Unfortunately, due to COVID concerns, we were unable to welcome parents, family and friends onto the school site, however, these performances were recorded and uploaded to a Flipgrid concert.  To view these performances, go to www.flipgrid.com, and then enter creative2020exp into the class code box. The Music Advantage: English and Literacy – Dr Anita Collins

Meuromusical educator, Dr Anita Collins recently presented a webinar for PETAA (Primary English Teaching Association Australia) in which she outlined the ways in which music benefits a child’s brain and wellbeing, and how music can be used to boost English and literacy learning.  Dr Collins’ presentation discussed the impact of rhythm and pitch learning undertaken during music, and the contribution of each to language development.  The second in the series, this article continues to summarise Dr Collins’ findings regarding the positive impact of music education upon English and Literacy standards.

Language is a combination of rhythm (beat-keeping) and melody (defined as singing in tune with a purpose).  Research has shown that the better children can sing in tune, the better they are at language, because they hear the subtleness of consonant sounds.  Singing songs assists with syntax, as they analyse emphasis and new sounds.

Song is our first language: we sing before we speak. Music learning helps children hear the subtleties of sounds (eg “h”, “b”, “g”), by assisting with the development of auditory processing skills.  Dr Collins states that “if a child can’t hear the language sound they can’t speak it.  If they can’t speak it, they can’t read it”.

The process for reading language (words) and reading music is the same system – known as “Symbol to Sound”.

Children:

1. Read a symbol,
2. Hear the sound in their heads,
3. Tell their body how to make the sound, and the
4. Sound goes back to their ear for checking.

Music also has positive impact upon Executive Function – what Dr Collins calls the “grownup skills”, like paying attention, focus, making decisions, developing strategies.  In turn, these skills are important to academic achievement.

Our children are indeed very fortunate to have access to a quality Music programme at St Peters.  The Kodaly-based programme, an aural-vocal approach, is firmly based in beat and singing activities, with a practical foundation of involving children in music making to deepen learning and understanding.

AIC Track and Field Championships

Last Friday and Saturday, over 20 boys from St Peters Springfield represented the College at the AIC Track and Field Championships. It was an outstanding day of competition for our boys with St Peters placing 2nd overall only 95 points behind Marist Ashgrove. St Peters also claimed the 12 and 13 years age groups as well as placing 2nd in the 14, 15 and 16 years age groups.

From a team perspective, the Relays demonstrated the growing depth within the boys Track and Field program winning the 12, 13 and 14 years relays while placing 2nd in the 15 and 16 years relays. Individually a number of Springfield boys did very well including Fred M in Year 5 who won and broke the Year 5 High Jump record, Steve L who won his 100m, Long Jump, Relay and broke the 14 years Triple Jump record, Xander P who won the 12 years High Jump and Relay, Treyvon P who won the 13 years Long Jump, Triple Jump and Relay, Kadin P who won the 16 years Long Jump and 400m. We congratulate all boys on their achievements individually as many boys set new personal bests on the day and contributed to the overall team success.

A special mention must go to Felix Y in Year 7 who had an exceptional day representing the College in 9 events and achieved outstanding results including:

GIRLS SPORT – Term 4

Last Friday afternoon proved to be a busy one for Girls Sport, approximately 25 Cross Country girls ventured to Rangakarra for a friendly Cross-Country Competition. It was a beautiful afternoon and the

Girls enjoyed the hospitality of Brisbane Girls Grammar School and a run to represent St Peters. Special mentions to our Year 12 runners, Tyla L, Caitlin M and Amelia G who ran in the maroon and white for the last time.

We also had a keen group of Rugby Sevens girls venture over to Easts Rugby Club for Round One of fixtures in the Summer Girls Competition.

The girls while playing under the West Rugby banner are enjoying learning the fast-growing Rugby Sevens game and thanks to our Coordinator Juan Gouws for making this possible. 

Well done to our Years 10 -12 girls who played Badminton last Saturday in the one-day competition. Well done to all involved with special mention to our Badminton Coordinator Laura Buckby and the team of Badminton Coaches for all their work.

Round 1 of Water Polo was a huge success and a promising start to the 2020/2021 season. A big thank you to our Coordinators, Elaine Ripamonti and Tracey Bruce who have done a great job in the pre-season with trials and all the behind the scenes work to get the girls in the pool for Round one.

The Volleyball Schools Cup Tournament gets underway this Friday – Sunday down the Gold Coast. St Peters has a girls team in all age groups from Years 7 - 10, the excitement amongst the girls is evident in their preparations. Good luck girls and thank you to our Coordinator Josh Singh, our Coaches and Parents for giving the girls this opportunity.

BWPI Girls Water Polo got off to a resounding start for the season.  Training has commenced with great enthusiasm and it showed in the girls performances on the weekend.  We had some very nervous girls in the youngest team who had never played Water Polo before and they came away with their first sensational win of the season.  We are in for a wonderful season of Girls Water Polo.  Thank you to all the parents who have been very understanding with our challenging COVID restrictions and are embracing the challenge of assisting with table duties in a game many have never witnessed before.  With over 110 girls in the Water Polo program we are very excited for the season ahead.  Well done to all girls on their determination as they hit the water this week.

Training continues this week on both Tuesday and Thursday mornings. The girls are training hard to prepare for the game days on Tuesday 20, Thursday 22, Monday 26, and Wednesday 28 October.

AIC Track & Field – St Peters Athletes Shine!

What an incredible two days of Track & Filed for our St Peters boys. The 2020 AIC Track and Field Championships were held on Friday 9 and Saturday 10 October at QSAC, Nathan. With a team of just under 100 athletes across all events, our boys stepped up with enthusiasm and pride to contest the AIC Championships, and they did not disappoint.

Finishing overall in second place, the 2020 St Peters Track & Field Team finished the championships with one of the College’s finest performances seen in many years. Given the many challenges faced in 2020, we are all so extremely proud of each athlete and what they achieved at this year’s championships. 

Our 2020 AIC Track & Field Team worked hard together to emulate the College’s moto of Plus Ultra, something we pride ourselves in.

2020 Boys Queensland Rowing Championships Reviewed

Congratulations to the St Peters Rowing Boys who competed in the Queensland State School Rowing Championships over the holidays.  There were some outstanding performances with the many of our boys competing in a final. 

We would like to acknowledge the following boys who made finals against very strong and competitive fields. 

• Sam G, Aled T, Jack U, Angus G & Archie M – 5th in the final of the Schoolboys Year 10 Quad
• Oscar M, Angus H, Angus G, Jack U & Archie C – 5th in the final of the Schoolboys Year 11 Quad
• Angus H & Jovan J – 5th in the final of the Open Schoolboys Double
• Jun K and Flynn G – 8th in the final of the Schoolboys Year 8 Double
• Josh W & Jace H – 9th in the final of the Schoolboys Year 8 Double
• Angus M & Jack U -   6th in the final of the Schoolboys Year 11 Double Scull
• Adam S & Oliver B – 10th in the final of the Schoolboys Year 10 Double
• Archie M & Adam S – 9th in the final of the Year 10 Schoolboys Double

It was fantastic to witness the large number of finals and semi-finals that our St Peters Rowers participated in.

With the commencement of Term 4 comes the commencement of our preparations for pre-season for both AIC Cricket and Volleyball. It is vitally important that any student in 2021 (Years 7 to 12) who wishes to participate in either AIC Cricket or AIC Volleyball, ensure that they are regularly checking both their emails and the St Peters App for updates and information about pre-season training and selection trials. Information regarding the St Peters Lutheran College Springfield Sport program will be communicated through a range of modes including email, St Peters App and Cornerstone. Students and parents will primarily receive information from the Head of Sport at Springfield but at times may also receive information from the Girls and Boys Sport Coordinators or individual Sport Coordinators. Parents and students are encouraged to download and use the St Peters App for information regarding the Sport program.
